The abrasion resistances of silica-filled styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) compounds prepared with and without dicyclopentadiene resin (SBR-R and SBR-0, respectively) were studied using four different abrasion testers, namely cut and chip (CC), Lambourn, DIN, and laboratory abrasion tester (LAT100). The effect of the resin on the abrasion behavior was elucidated by analyzing the morphologies and size distributions of wear particles. All the wear particles had rough surfaces, but those obtained in the Lambourn abrasion test exhibited relatively smooth surfaces. The size distributions of the wear particles showed different trends depending on the abrasion tester and the rubber compound; however, most of the wear particles were larger than 1000 ㎛. The SBR-R sample showed a wide range of particle sizes (from 63 ㎛) in the LAT100 abrasion test and majority of the wear particles were 500-1000 ㎛, whereas the SBR-0 sample had the most distribution of larger than 1000 ㎛. The abrasion rates of SBR-0 sample were lower than those of the SBR-R sample for the CC and LAT100 abrasion tests, but the Lambourn abrasion test result showed the opposite trend. Addition of the resin influenced the abrasion behavior, however the effect varied depending on the type of abrasion tests.
In this study, different types and shapes of various particles produced on the asphalt pavement road were analyzed. Road dust at a bus stop was collected and was separated as per their sizes by using a sieve shaker. Tire-road wear particles (TRWPs), asphalt pavement wear particles (APWPs), mineral particles, plant-related particles, glass beads, glass particles, road paint wear particles, plastic particles, and fibers were observed herein. The types and shapes of the particles varied depending on their sizes. TRWPs larger than 500 ㎛ were not observed. TRWPs with a size of 212-500 ㎛ were rarely present, but many TRWPs with a size smaller than 212 ㎛ were observed. APWPs were observed for whole-particle sizes of below 1,000 ㎛. A variety of particles on the road would lead to lower friction between the tires and the road, thereby increasing the braking distance of vehicles. Most of the particles include mineral particles, glass particles, and APWPs with rough surfaces. Therefore, the abrasion of the tire tread would accelerate owing to friction with the tough particles.
The aim of this work is to show the way of manufacturing the SiC mechanical seal at the low temperature of 130$0^{\circ}C$ using clay and frit as source of secondary phase. $\alpha$-SiC and $\beta$-SiC powder which showed different distribution of particle were used as starting materials, i.e. average particle size of $\alpha$-SiC was larger than that of $\beta$-SiC. The mechanical and tribological properties of two groups of specimen, i.e. one contained mainly larger $\alpha$-SiC powder and the other mainly fine particle $\beta$-SiC, were measured. The specimen consisted of larger $\alpha$-SiC exhibited lower density flexural strength and wear resistance is comparison with these of sample containning mainly $\beta$-SiC . This difference could be originated from the dependence of capillary force on the particle size. For the larger SiC particle, the liquid phase may not fill the whole pores during sintering, due to low capillary force, whereas the liquid phase can infiltrate into the small ores surrounded small $\beta$-SiC particle. Thus, the course of high flexural strength and high wear resistance of specimen prepared using small particles can be explaced from the easy infiltration of liquid phase.
PTFE is generally utilized as the form of composites with adding various fillers. The purpose of this paper lies on clarifying the friction and wear properties of the PTFE coating layer on steel. Especially, the effects of PTFE powder size for coating and surface roughness of the counter material on the properties are investigated. Sliding friction and wear tests are conducted at several sliding speeds by employing two types of PTFE coating layer using different powder sizes. One type of coating layer is composed of uniform fine powder, whereas the other type is made up of mixture powder of different sizes. As results, it is found that PTFE coating layer are effective to improve the wear resistance and to reduce the friction coefficient. It is clear that PTFE coating layers are abrasively removed by asperities of the counter material during sliding contact. However, PTFE coating layer with uniform fine powder shows somewhat better wear resistance than that with mixture powder of different sizes in low sliding speed region. It can be seen that the wear of the coating layer are drastically reduced because wear fragment from counter material are transferred to the coating layer. On the other hand, friction coefficient is shown not to be directly related with PTFE powder size in coating layer.
Asphalt pavements are generally composed of fine and coarse aggregates, bitumen, and modifier. Asphalt pavement wear particles (APWPs) are produced by friction between the road surface and the tire tread, and they flow into the environment such as rivers and oceans. Model APWPs were prepared and a single APWP of 212-500 (S-APWP) and 500-1000 ㎛ (L-APWP) was analyzed using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) to investigate inhomogeneity in the compositions of the APWPs. The reference TGA thermogram was built using thermograms of the raw materials and formulation of the model asphalt pavement. The compositions of the APWPs were different from each other. Ash contents of the APWPs were lower than expected. Inhomogeneity in the total contents of bitumen and modifier was more severe than that in the other components. The inhomogeneity of the S-APWPs was more severe than that of the L-APWPs.
The effect of extrusion temperature on the microstructure and mechanical properties was studied in gas atomized TEX>$Al_{81}Si_{19}$ alloy powders and their extruded bars using SEM, tensile testing and wear testing. The Si particle size of He-gas atomized powder was about 200-800 nm. Each microstructure of the extruded bars with extrusion temperature (400, 450 and 50$0^{\circ}C$) showed a homogeneous distribution of primary Si and eutectic Si particles embedded in the Al matrix and the particle size varied from 0.1 to 5.5 ${\mu}m$. With increasing extrusion temperature from 40$0^{\circ}C$ to 50$0^{\circ}C$, the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) decreased from 282 to 236 ㎫ at 300 K and the specific wear increased at all sliding speeds due to the coarse microstructure. The fracture behavior of failure in tension testing and wear testing was also studied. The UTS of extrudate at 40$0^{\circ}C$ higher than that of 50$0^{\circ}C$ because more fine Si particles in Al matrix of extrudate at 40$0^{\circ}C$ prevented crack to propagate.
The effect of size of SiC particles and additive Mg content on the mechanical properties and wear characteristics were investigated for the SiCp/AC8A composites fabricated by pressureless infiltration process. Results showed that the hardness and the bending strength increased with decreasing the size of SiC particle. By increasing the Mg content the hardness of SiCp/AC8A composites increased due to the hard reaction products, however the bending strength decreased by formation of coarse precipitates and high porosity level. The SiCp/AC8A composites exhibited about 6 times higher wear resistance compared with AC8A alloy at high sliding velocity and as increasing the particle size, wear resistance was improved. The major wear mechanical of SiCp/AC8A composites exhibited the abrasive wear at low to high sliding velocity whereas AC8A alloy showed adhesive and melt wear at high sliding velocity.
The charge and magnetic characteristics of LM (Low-metallic) and NAO (Non-asbestos-organic) brake wear particles were analyzed. The ratio of charged particles from total particles is about 86% of the LM pad and about 92% of the NAO pad. Number of charge per particle from the NAO pad is also higher than that of the LM pad. The ratio of magnetic particles from total particles increases with the particle size. The ratio of magnetic particles from the LM pad is about 15% for the particles with the size of 1 ㎛, and about 74% for ones with 5 ㎛. The ratio from the NAO pad is about 5% for the particles with the size from 0.5 ㎛ to 2 ㎛, and about 80% for the particles with 5 ㎛. Through the analysis of the components of the two pads with SEM-EDS (Scanning Electron Microscopy - Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy), it was found that the LM pad was occupied with more iron fraction than the NAO pad and that PM2.5-10 was occupied with more iron fraction than PM2.5. The particles smaller than 10 ㎛ (i.e. PM10) from the LM pad contained about 83% of charged particles, about 43% of magnetic particles, and about 93% of charged or magnetic particles. PM10 from the NAO pad contained about 88% of charged particles, about 15% of magnetic particles, and about 89% of charged or magnetic particles.
The ball-on-disk type sliding tests with boundary lubricated steels were carried out to verify the effect of initial spacing in surface profiles on wear and scuffing. Three kinds of surface spacing, which are closely related with initial surface micro-cracks on sliding surfaces, were produced on AISI 1045 steel surfaces using different grinding and polishing processes. Frictional forces and time to scuffing were measured, and the shape and amount of wear particles were analyzed to compare the with original surface profiles. From the tests, it was confirmed that the size of wear particles are related closely to the original spacing of the surface profile. The time to failure and amount of wear were sensitive to the surface spacing. The wider surface spacing shows much longer sliding life and smaller amount of wear than the others. Time to scuffing was increased with increasing surface pro(lie spacing. The size of wear particles increased while the wear and wear rate K were decreased with an increase in surface spacing. After the sliding tests, surface cracks of inner parts of the wear track formed due to scuffing were observed and compared among the specimens having the different surface spacing.

In this paper the ball-on-disk type sliding tests with boundary lubricated steels were carried out to verify the relation between surface profiles and wear as well as scuffing. Three kinds of surface roughness and asperity radius were produced on AISI 1045 steels using the different processes of grinding and polishing. Frictional forces and time to scuffing were measured. Also, the shape and amount of wear particles were analyzed to compare with original profiles. From the tests, it was confirmed that the size of wear particles are very related to original surface profile. The time to failures and wear amounts were sensitive to the surface spacing. The large surface spacing shows much longer sliding life and smaller wear amount than the others. Time to scuffing was increased with increasing surface profile spacing. The size of wear particles was increased and the amount was decreased with increasing surface profile spacing. Wear volume and wear rate K were decreased with increasing surface profile spacing. And after sliding tests, surface cracks of inner parts of the wear track occurred scuffing were observed and compared the differences about each specimen having the different surface profile spacing.
