  • The mechanical characteristics of the high speed steel by powder metallurgy process(PM-HSS) has been reported to improve with several alloying constituents, such as high carbon, vanadium and cobalt. In this paper, sliding wear test has been conducted using a pin-on-disc machine for three PM-HSS which contains 0%, 5% and 12% cobalt respectively, in order to evaluate the effect of cobalt on wear properties of PM-HSS. The results of this study showed that the wear resistance of PM-HSS has been increased by the addition of cobalt on the range of experimental friction velocities. When compared with the effect of addition of cobalt, the wear resistance of PM-HSS with 5% cobalt has been found to be superior to that of PM-HSS with 12% cobalt.

  • Using NC or CNC machine tool, the unmanned automatic production system has been growing recently in the manufacturing field. Thus it is important to find out the machinability of cutting force, tool wear and surface roughness during the cutting process. It is necessary to find how to estimate the machinability for the effective cutting condition because of problem about cutting power, tool wear, cutting time and precision. This study was planned to discover the relations of tool wear by variations of roughness and derived to correlate the wear with the surface roughness on the cutting parameter(cutting force, flank wear, surface roughness, friction angle, shear angle, slenderness ratio) when the aluminum alloy was cut in turning.

  • The tribological behaviour of WS$_2$ solid lubricant was investigated using a ball-on-disk type tester. The WS$_2$ powder was spray-coated at room temperature and the effects of specimen configuration, atmosphere, applied load and rotating spccd on the friction coefficient was examined. WS$_2$ coated ball and disk showed the lowest friction coefficient of 0.05 in the nitrogen atmosphere under 0.3 kgf and 100 rpm, whereas relatively high coefficient of 0.1 - 0.15 was observed in air atmosphere. This confirmed that the spray-coated WS$_2$ solid lubricant was effective in reducing the friction coefficient and improving wear life in nitrogen atmosphere.

  • The effect of characteristic of surface roughness on friction and sliding wear was studied experimentally with ball-on-disk type wear tester. The test was conducted with specimens those have varying arithmetic mean value, skewness and kurtosis under the condition of different load, sliding speed and lubricant viscosity. The surface of the lower skewness in negative value or the highel kurtosis tends to have low friction for the same arithmetic mean value. There is optimum arithmetic mean value surface roughness for operating variables have load, speed, etc.

  • The influence of ion implantation on surface properties of polymers was studied. We investigated microhardness, friction, wear and wettablility of polyimide. Energies of 50, 200keV were used with doses range from $1{\times}10^{13} to 1{\times}10^{16} [ions/cm^2]$. The implanted ion species were B, N and Ar. The microhardness of polyimide was increased after implantation for doses of $1{\times}10^{15}\; [ions/cm^2]$. A reduction of the friction coefficient was in most case correlated with a reduction of wear. The contact angles of water for $B^+,N^+$ implanted polyimide decreased from $76^{\circ}C$ to zero, as the fluencies increased at energies of 50 and 200 KeV. However, the contact angle of Ar ion implanted polyimide did not change under ambient room conditions even if the time elapsed. SEM measurement was performed to characterize the modified surface layer.

  • The tribological behavior of carbon epoxy composites whose surfaces have many small grooves of $100\mu m$ width was experimentally investigated with respect to the sliding direction against groove orientation, surface pressure (P) and velocity (V). The wear mechanism of the composites was observed to calculate the wear volume with respect to the friction coefficient using scanning electron microscopic (SEM). Experimental results show that the abrasive wear is dominant wear mechanism for the grooved composite surface and the friction and wear are greatly reduced when the sliding direction is parallel to the axis of groove because abrasive particles are removed through the grooves effectively.

  • In this study, three kinds of brake: discs including two coated brake discs and one steel disc were tested under the same experimental conditions on a reduced scale braking test bench. Plasma spray coating technique was used to coat ceramic powder on the discs. In the test, four commercial sintered brake pads were coupled with discs. Ceramic coated discs have shown good stability in friction coefficient at high speed and high energy braking conditions. However, ceramic coated discs caused more wear loss of pad mass than the steel disc. It was shown that thermal barrier effect in ceramic coated discs adjusted the thermal partition between pad and disc. Steel disc showed fluctuating friction coefficient at high speed but less wear loss of pad mass than ceramic coated discs.

  • AlSi-Al$_2$O$_3$ composite layer was prepared by plasma spray on steel substrate. The composite powder for plasma spray was prepared by simple mechanical blending. The wear resistance of the composite layers and matrix aluminum alloy were performed in terms of size distribution of ceramic particles. Friction coefficients of AlSi were decreased with incorporation of $Al_2$O$_3$. The tribological properties of coated layers were affected by the size of incorporated $Al_2$O$_3$ particle. The reinforcement of $Al_2$O$_3$ particle into aluminum alloy matrix decreased the friction coefficient as well as wear loss.

  • Composite material is widely used in the automotive industries because it has excellent mechanical properties and is possible to reduce weight due to the low density. However, there is a new obstacle to meet environment regulation like Cu less or Cu free regulation for the friction material. Although it is strongly demanded, there are few research results about that unfortunately. Unless this problem is not solved properly, it is impossible to apply composite brake system to vehicle. In this paper, a new eco-friendly friction material for composite brake system is represented to respond these regulations. To do this, friction characteristics between existing low steel friction material and new eco-friendly friction material are verified to secure performances for brake system such as effect characteristic, fade characteristic and wear characteristic. And composite brake gets the equivalent or better performance compared to a low steel friction material. Finally, this result contributes to the study of major principles for the development of eco-friendly friction material in the future.

  • One of the innovative physical methods that provide insight into the basic processes which determine friction and wear behavior of coated machine tools is acoustic emission (AE). In this study, an investigation of the relation between AE and friction signal produced during repeated sliding test is presented. The material of test specimens is CrN coated 0.2% plain carbon steel with 1 Um thickness. The obtained results demonstrate that AE signal is very related with friction, and AE signal is more sensitive than friction when CrN coated film come off the substrate.
