  • We introduce a scheme with a maximized efficiency of detecting atoms passing through an optical standing-wave mode cavity. Consider a standing-wave optical cavity illuminated by a weak probe beam through one of its mirrors where the transmission through the other mirror is monitored by a photodetector. If an atom is put in the cavity, the atom-cavity coupling shifts the resonance frequency of the system via the so-called normal mode splitting, and thereby the transmission power will drop. In fact, this type of atom detection scheme has been used in recent single atom trap experiments In practice, however, the field in a standing-wave mode will have a geometrical structure having nodes and antinodes that when the atom traverses the cavity through one of the nodes, there will be no such effect of atom-field interaction.   • Vibration localization of a periodic structure with mistuning is presented in this paper. Mistuning in periodic structures can lead to an increase of the forced response which is much larger than those of perfectly tuned assembly. Thus, mistuning has a critical impact on high cycle fatigue in structures, and it is of great importance to predict the mistuned forced response in efficient manner. In this paper, forced response of a coupled pendulum is investigated to identify localization effects of periodic structures. The effects of mistuning and damping on the maximum forced response are examined. It is seen that in certain condition of mistuning and coupling, strong localization occurs and this can be significant under weak damping.

변형된 TE$_{113}$/TM$_{012}$ 삼중모드 도파관 대역통과여파기의 구현 (Implementation of a modified TE$_{113}$/TM$_{012}$ triple-mode waveguide bandpass filter)

  • In this paper, a modifed TE$_{113}$/TM$_{012}$ triple-mode bandpass filter is implemented by using a modified inter-cavity iris in which the number of slots are reduced upto 50%. In a coventioanl iris two prirs of slot apertures are used to independently couple three resonant modes between two adjacent cavities. However, if transverse magnetic polarizability of a pair of veritcal slot apertures is used to control weak horizontal TE$_{h}$-TE$_{h}$ mode coupling, the width of novel iris slots would substitute for the slot length of the conventional iris, causing to eliminate the horizontal slot apertures. The measured data of two filters, which are the modified filter and ocnventional one, are compared. Experimental result shows that the characteristics of the novel triple-mode filter matches well that of the conventional filter.

Energy Gap of $MgB_2$ from Point Contact Spectroscopy

  • We performed the point contact spectroscopy on newly discovered superconductor $MgB_2$ thin films with Au tip. In the point contact spectroscopy of the metallic Sharvin limit, the differential conductance below the gap is twice as that above the gap by virtue of Andreev Reflection. After some surface cleaning processes of sample preparation such as ion-milling and wet etching, the obtained dI/dV versus voltage curves are relatively well fitted to the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) formalism. Gaps determined by this technique were distributed in the range of 3meV~ 8meV with the BCS value of 5.9meV in the weak coupling limit. We attribute these discrepancies to the symmetry of the gap parameter and the degradation of the surface of the sample. We also present the temperature dependence of the conductance vs voltage curve and thereby the temperature dependence of the gap.

  • o-Aminobenzene sulfone-N-ethylanilide, the diazo component of C.I. Acid Red 57, is currently being diazotised by the use of nitrosylsulphuric acid because of its high molecular weight and weak basicity. However, this method has many problems such as complicated manufacturing process and discharge of large volume of strong acidic effluent. In this study, the possibility of replacing nitrosylsulphuric acid method by direct method, which is simpler and produces less effluent, has been checked and the optimum process condition was studied. The effect of HCl concentration, the amount of sodium nitrite and particle size of diazo component on diazotisation yield was investigated. The optimum pH condition for coupling reaction was also evaluated.

Effect on N Defect in Cu-doped III-nitride Semiconductors

  • We studied the effect on the electronic and magnetic properties of the N defect in clean and Cu-doped wurtzite III-nitrides by using the first-principles calculations. When it is doped two Cu atoms in the nearest neighboring sites, the system of AlN, GaN, or InN with the N vacancy is energetically more favorable than that without the N vacancy site. When the Cu concentration increases, the total magnetic moment of a supercell becomes small. The ferromagnetism of Cu atom is very low due to the weak 3d-3d coupling. It is noticeable that the spin-exchange interaction between the Cu-3d and N defect states is important.

Ideal structure for tunneling magnetoresistance and spin injection into semiconductros: Ni(111)/BN/Co(111)

  • Using the Vienna ab initio simulation package (VASP) incorporating van der Waals interaction, we have explored structural, adsorption, and magnetic properties of Ni(111)/BN/Co(111) systems. We have found that both Ni(111) and Co(111) layers shows half metallic state, while the spacer BN layer becomes weak metal for one monolayer (ML) thickness and an insulating barrier for two ML thickness. The half metallic states in both Ni(111) and Co(111) layers are robust because it is unchanged independently on the magnetic coupling of Ni(111) and Co(111). This finding suggests that the Ni(111)/BN/Co(111) systems can be utilized for perfect tunneling magnetoresistance system. Moreover, it can be applied for potential spin injecting into semiconductor in FM/semiconductor system due to the fact that the half metallic state in FM layers at the interface will be unchanged.

Dual-band Frequency Selective Surface Bandpass Filters in Terahertz Band

  • Terahertz dual-band frequency selective surface filters made by perforating two different rectangular holes in molybdenum have been designed, fabricated and measured. Physical mechanisms of the dual-band resonant responses are clarified by three differently configured filters and the electric field distribution diagrams. The design process is straightforward and simple according to the physical concept and some formulas. Due to the weak coupling between the two neighboring rectangle holes with different sizes in the unit cell, good dual-band frequency selectivity performance can be easily achieved both in the lower and higher bands by tuning dimensions of the two rectangular holes. Three samples are fabricated, and their dual-band characteristics have been demonstrated by a THz time-domain spectroscopy system. Different from most commonly used metal-dielectric structure or metal-dielectric-metal sandwiched filters, the designed dual-band filters have advantages of easy fabrication and low cost, the encouraging results afforded by these filters could find their applications in dual-band sensors, THz communication systems and other emerging THz technologies.

Effect of Highly Oriented Layer on GMR and Magnetic Properties of NiFe/Cu Thin Film Prepared by Magnetron Sputtering

  • In order to investigate the effect of the interface on GMR, [NiFe(25 ${\AA}$)/Cu(24${\AA}$)]$_2$/Si thin film was epitaxially grown on HF-treated Si (001) substrate using a DC magnetron sputtering method. Typical GMR effects could be observed in epitaxial film with a weak antiferromagnetic exchange coupling while non epitaxial film showed unsaturated and broad MR curves probably due to inter-diffusion between NiFe and Cu layers. Ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) experiment showed two distinct absorption peaks in all films. Each peak was revealed to come from each NiFe layer with different magnetic property. In FMR measurement very clear interface in epitaxial films could be confirmed by a lower value of line width (ΔH) and higher M$\sub$s/ of epitaxial film than those of non epitaxial films, respectively.

  • In this paper, the three-dimensional finite element model is established to investigate the structural dynamic characteristics of rotor blade using a finite element analysis. Six natural frequencies and mode shapes are calculated by computer simulation. The first three flapping modal frequencies, the first two lead-lag modal frequencies, and the first feathering modal frequency are validated through comparison with the modal test results of the fixed rotor blade. The computer simulation results are found in good agreement with experimentally measured natural frequencies. The important results are obtained as follows: (1) Natural frequencies are changed due to the variation of rotational speed and fiber angle of rotor blade, (2) Weak coupling between flapping mode shape and lead-lag mode shape are detected, (3) Centrifugal force has more effect on flapping modal frequency than lead-lag modal frequency.
