  • The common prospect in diminishing mine-blast vibration is decreasing vibration with increasing distance. This paper indicates that, contrary to the general expectancy, vibration waves change their forms when they are travelling through the low velocity layer like coal and so-called guided waves moving the vibration waves to longer distances without decreasing their amplitudes. The reason for this unexpected vibration increase is the formation of guided waves in the coal bed which has low density and low seismic velocity with respect to the neighboring layers. The amplitudes of these guided waves, that are capable of traveling long distances depending on the seam thickness, are several times higher than that of the usual vibration waves. This phenomenon can many complaints from the residential areas very far away from the blasting sites. Thus, this unexpected behavior of the coal beds in the surface coal mines should also be considered in vibration minimization studies. This study developed a model to predict the effects of guided waves on the propagation ways of blast-induced vibrations. Therefore, vibration mitigation studies considering the nearby buildings can be focused on these target places.

  • Transverse magnetohydrodynamic waves often called Alfvénic (or kink) waves have been often theoretically put forward to solve the outstanding problems of the solar corona like coronal heating, solar wind acceleration, and chemical abundance enhancement. Here we report the first spectroscopic detection of Alfvénic waves around a sunspot at chromospheric heights. By analyzing the spectra of the Hα line and Ca II 854.2 nm line, we determined line-of-sight velocity and temperature as functions of position and time. As a result, we identified transverse magnetohydrodynamic waves pervading the superpenumbral fibrils. These waves are characterized by the periods of 2.5 to 4.5 minutes, and the propagation direction parallel to the fibrils, the supersonic propagation speeds of 45 to 145 km s-1, and the close association with umbral oscillations and running penumbral waves in sunspots. Our results support the notion that the chromosphere around sunspots abounds with Alfvénic waves excited by the mode conversion of the upward-propagating slow magnetoacoustic waves.

  • A possible source of resonant problems in a harbor is long waves generated by incident wave groups. The analytical solutions of the governing equations of second-order long waves derived using a multiple-scale perturbation method consist of the locked and free long waves. The locked long waves propagate at some group velocity, whereas the free long waves propagate at the shallow-water speed. To study the resonance of free long waves, a trapezoidally varying topography is employed. With certain combinations of incident angle, water depth, and ambient current velocity, free long waves can be trapped and resonated.

  • The vibration of a cylindrical shell is generated due to elastic waves propagating on the shell. Those elastic waves include propagating waves such as flexural, longitudinal and shear waves. Those also include non-propagating decaying waves, i.e. evanescent waves. In order to separate contributions of each type of waves to the data for the vibration of the cylindrical shell, spatial signal processing techniques for wavenumber analysis are investigated in this paper. Those techniques include Fast Fourier transform(FFT) algorithm, Extended Prony method and Overdetermined Modified Extended Prony method(OMEP). Those techniques have been applied to identify the waves from simulated vibration signals with various signal-to-noise ratios. Futhermore, the experimental data for in-plane vibration of the cylindrical shell has been processed with those techniques to identify propagating waves(longitudinal, shear and flexural waves) and evanescent waves.

  • We carry out the numerical simulation to test a hypothesis that freak waves can be triggered by the infragravity waves of bound mode underlying the ever-present swells and its constructive interaction with swells using the Tool Box called the ihFoam that has its roots on the OpenFoam, and Bi-spectrum. Numerical simulation is implemented for the SamChcuk LNG Plant where freak waves have been reported in front of the private wharf during its construction phase due to the uncompleted northern breakwater. Infra-gravity waves of bound mode is generated using the difference wave-wave interaction between the local wind waves of 7 s and a swell of 11.4 s based on the Bi-spectrum. For the sake of comparison, numerical simulation for infra-gravity waves of free mode is also carried out. Numerical results show that stem waves along the private wharf for SamChcuk LNG Plant can be triggered by the infra-gravity waves of bound mode coming from the north, which eventually leads to freak waves when encounters the reflected waves from the south jetty.

  • We have carried out all-sky imaging of OH Meinel, $O_2$ atmospheric and OI 557.7 nm airglow layers in the period from July of 2001 through September of 2005 at Mt. Bohyun, Korea ($36.2^{\circ}$ N, $128.9^{\circ}$ E, Alt = 1,124 m). We analyzed the images observed during a total of 153 clear moonless nights and found 97 events of band-type waves. The characteristics of the observed waves (wavelengths, periods, and phase speeds) are consistent with internal gravity waves. The wave occurrence shows an approximately semi-annual variation, with maxima near solstices and minima near equinoxes, which is consistent with other studies of airglow wave observations, but not with those of mesospheric radar/lidar observations. The observed waves tended to propagate westward during fall and winter, and eastward during spring and summer. Our ray tracing study of the observed waves shows that majority of the observed waves seemed to originate from mesospheric altitudes. The preferential directions and the apparent source altitudes can be explained if the observed waves are secondary waves generated from primary waves that have been selected by the filtering process and break up at the mesospheric altitudes.

  • This paper provides a practical stochastic method by which the maximum equilibrium scour depth below a pipeline exposed to random waves plus a current on mild slopes can be derived. The approach is based on assuming the waves to be a stationary narrow-band random process, adopting the Battjes and Groenendijk (2000) wave height distribution for mild slopes including the effect of breaking waves, and using the empirical formulas for the scour depth on the horizontal seabed by Sumer and Fredsøe (1996). The present approach is valid for wave-dominant flow conditions. Results for random waves alone and random wave plus currents have been presented and discussed by varying the seabed slope and water depth. An approximate method is also proposed, and comparisons are made with the present stochastic method. For random waves alone it appears that the approximate method can replace the stochastic method, whereas the stochastic method is required for random waves plus currents. Tentative approaches to related random wave-induced scour cases for random waves alone are also suggested.

  • Real sea waves in a towing wave basin have been generated using random periodic motion of the segmented wave makers and the wave reflections of sidewalls. Theoretically, the real sea waves can be described by the superposition of many random oblique waves. This paper introduces numerical real sea wave generation in a rectangular wave basin using spectral method that uses a superposition of orthogonal functions which have to satisfy the Laplace equation. Oblique regular waves, long crested irregular waves and real sea waves were simulated and met the requirement of sidewall wave reflection and wave absorption. MLM (Maximum Likelihood Method) and Spatial Fourier Transform were used in order to obtain propagated wave direction characteristics. The estimated results proved the usefulness of the method and the performances showed reasonable directional patterns comparing with generating patterns.

  • The propagation of electromagnetic waves in a photorefractive crystal is considered. The electromagnetic waves(i.e. TE waves and TM, waves) incident upon the crystal at any incident angle are coupled with reflected waves due to the Fresnel's reflectance in the photorefractive crystal. This coupling leads to a nonreciprocal optical transmissivity. About some incident angles, the optical transmissivity of TE and TM waves in regard to the coupling strength is investigated.

  • By adopting a 2D time-dependent wave code, we investigate how mode-converted waves at the Ion-Ion Hybrid (IIH) resonance and compressional waves propagate in 2D density structures with a wide range of field-aligned wavenumbers to background magnetic fields. The simulation results show that the mode-converted waves have continuous bands across the field line consistent with previous numerical studies. These waves also have harmonic structures in frequency domain and are localized in the field-aligned heavy ion density well. Our results thus emphasize the importance of a field-aligned heavy ion density structure for ultra-low frequency wave propagation, and suggest that IIH waves can be localized in different locations along the field line.
