A baseline free method for locating imperfect bolted joints

  • This paper studies detecting and locating loose bolts using nonlinear guided waves. The 3D Finite Element (FE) simulation is used for the prediction of guided waves' interactions with loose bolted joints. The numerical results are verified by experimentally obtained data. The study considers bolted joints consisting of two bolts. It is shown that the guided waves' interaction with surfaces of a loose bolted joint generates Contact Acoustic Nonlinearity (CAN). The study uses CAN for detecting and locating loose bolts. The processed experimentally obtained data show that the CAN is able to successfully detect and locate loose bolted joints. A 3D FE simulation scheme is developed and validated by experimentally obtained data. It is shown that FE can predict the propagation of guided waves in loose bolts and is also able to detect and locate them. Several numerical case studies with various bolt sizes are created and studied using the validated 3D FE simulation approach. It is shown that the FE simulation modeling approach and the signal processing scheme used in the current study are able to detect and locate the loose bolts in imperfect bolted joints. The outcomes of this research can provide better insights into understanding the interaction of guided waves with loose bolts. The results can also enhance the maintenance and repair of imperfect joints using the nonlinear guided waves technique.

Theoretical formulations of current and unique Rayleigh waves with impedance boundary condition embedding normal stress

  • In this article, a novel propagation formulation of Rayleigh waves in a compressible isotropic half-space with impedance boundary condition is proposed by embedding the normal stress. In a two-dimensional case, it is assumed that a design boundary is free of normal traction and a shear traction depends on linearly a normal component of displacements multiplied by frequencies. Therefore, impedance boundary conditions affect the normal stress, where the impedance parameters correspond to dimensions of stresses over velocity. On the other hand, vanished impedance values are traction-free boundary conditions. The main purpose of this article is to present theoretically the existence and uniqueness of a Rayleigh wave formulation relying on secular equation's mathematical analyses. Its velocity varies along with the impedance parameters. Moreover, numerical experiments with different values for the velocity of Rayleigh waves are carried out. The present Rayleigh waves study is a fundamental step in analyzing the cause and effect of physical states such as building or structure damages resulting from natural dynamics. The results of the study generate a basic design formulation theory to test the effects of Rayleigh waves affecting structures when an earthquake occurs. The presence and uniqueness of the proposed formulation is verified by mutual comparisons of several numerical examples.

Improvement of prediction methods of power increase in regular head waves using calm-water and resistance tests in waves

  • This paper applies load variation method to predict speed-power-rpm relationship along with propulsive performances in regular head waves, and to derive overload factors (ITTC, 2018). 'Calm-water tests' and 'resistance test in waves' are used. The modified overload factors are proposed taking non-linearity into consideration, and applied to the direct powering, and resistance and thrust identity method. These indirect methods are evaluated through comparing the speed-power-rpm relationships with those obtained from the resistance and self-propulsion tests in calm water and in waves. The objective ship is KVLCC2. The load variation method predicts well the speed-power-rpm relationship and propulsion performances in waves. The direct powering method with modified overload factors also predicts well. The resistance and thrust identity method with modified overload factor predicts with a little difference. The direct powering method with overload factors predicts with a relatively larger difference.

Occurrence Probability of Freak Waves at Nearshore of Donghae Harbor in the East Sea (동해항 전면 해역에서의 Freak Waves 발생확률)

  • Over the last 20 years, freak waves have attracted many researchers because of their unexpected behaviors and damages on offshore structures and vessels in the ocean and coastal waters. Despite many researches on the causes, mechanisms and occurrence of freak waves, we have not reached consensus on the results of the researches. This paper presents the occurrence probability of freak waves based on the analysis of wave records measured at coastal waters of Donghae harbor in the East Sea. Three freak waves were found which satisfied conditions of m and $H_S{\geq}2.5m$ and $H_m/H_S{\geq}2$. The occurrence probabilities of freak waves were estimated from extreme distributions by Mori, Rayleigh and Ahn, and found to be on the orders of O($10^{-1}$), O($10^{-2}$), and O($10^{-3}$), respectively. The occurrence probabilities of freak waves measured from waves records were estimated between O($10^{-2}$) and O($10^{-3}$), which were located between predictions by Rayleigh and Ahn's extreme probability distributions. However, we need more analysis of wave records obtained from diverse field conditions in order to verify the accuracy of the estimation of occurrence probability of freak waves.

COSMIC RAYS ACCELERATED AT SHOCK WAVES IN LARGE SCALE STRUCTURE

  • Shock waves form in the intergalactic space as an ubiquitous consequence of cosmic structure formation. Using N-body/hydrodynamic simulation data of a ACDM universe, we examined the properties of cosmological shock waves including their morphological distribution. Adopting a diffusive shock acceleration model, we then calculated the amount of cosmic ray energy as well as that of gas thermal energy dissipated at the shocks. Finally, the dynamical consequence of those cosmic rays on cluster properties is discussed.

An Interacting Wave Profile of Three Trains of Gravity Waves on Finite Depth by Contraction Method

  • Superposition of three wave trains on finite depth is investigated. This paper is focused on how to improve the linear superposition of three waves. This was realized by introducing the scheme. The idea of the scheme is based on a fixed point approach. Application of the scheme to the superposition makes it possible to obtain a wave profile of wave-wave interaction. With the help of FFT, it was possible to analyze high-order nonlinear frequencies for three interacting Stokes' waves on finite depth.

  • This paper is to compare the absorption coefficient with normal incidence waves and it with diffuse incidence waves of glass wool which the most used absorption material and multi layer fiber. The absorption coefficient with normal incidence waves is calculated by surface impedance that measured by using an acoustic tube. Based on this data, the absorption. coefficient with diffuse incidence waves is predicted and is compared with measured the absorption coefficient in reverberation room.

  • In this paper, a program for the calculation of GZ curve for a ship in waves is developed and GZ curves for a ferry in the still water and in waves are calculated. And the added mass, damping, restoring forces and wave exciting forces are calculated by using the strip theory given by Salvesen, Tuck, Faltinsen. Capsizing simulations are perfoned in consideration if the nonlinear restoring forces of the ship in waves by using the Runge-Kutta 4-th method.

  • The main tsunami wave triggered by the December 2004 Sumatra tsunami was detected in the ocean south of India by satellite altimeters on Jason, Topex/Poseidon and Envisat. All three altimeters also detected shorter-wavelength (10 to 100 km), slower-propagating surface waves, spreading from the site of the earthquake. The shorter waves give additional information about the tsunami event, and can be used to better define the generating region in this, and future tsunamis. The properties of the area of shorter tsunami-generated waves may also be important in designing a future satellite-based detection system.
