A Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System for Sensor Failure Detection Using Wavelet Denoising, PCA and SPRT

  • In this work, a neuro-fuzzy inference system combined with the wavelet denoising, PCA (principal component analysis) and SPRT (sequential probability ratio test) methods is developed to detect the relevant sensor failure using other sensor signals. The wavelet denoising technique is applied to remove noise components in input signals into the neuro-fuzzy system The PCA is used to reduce the dimension of an input space without losing a significant amount of information. The PCA makes easy the selection of the input signals into the neuro-fuzzy system. Also, a lower dimensional input space usually reduces the time necessary to train a neuro-fuzzy system. The parameters of the neuro-fuzzy inference system which estimates the relevant sensor signal are optimized by a genetic algorithm and a least-squares algorithm. The residuals between the estimated signals and the measured signals are used to detect whether the sensors are failed or not. The SPRT is used in this failure detection algorithm. The proposed sensor-monitoring algorithm was verified through applications to the pressurizer water level and the hot-leg flowrate sensors in pressurized water reactors.

  • The Wavelet Transform has been applied in mathematics and computer sciences. Numerous studies have proven its advantages in image processing and data compression, and have made it a basic encoding technique in data compression standards like JPEG2000 and MPEG-4. Software implementations of the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) appears to be the performance bottleneck in real-time systems in terms of performance. And hardware implementations are not flexible. Therefore, FPGA implementations of the DWT has been a topic of recent research. The goal of this thesis is to investigate of FPGA implementations of the DWT Processor for image compression applications. The DWT processor design is based on the Lifting Based Wavelet Transform Scheme, which is a fast implementation of the DWT The design uses various techniques.   • The wavelet analysis technique is applied in the spectral domain to efficiently represent the multi-scale features of the impedance matrices. In this scheme, the 2-D quadtree decomposition (applying the wavelet transform to only the part of the matrix) method often used in image processing area is applied for a sparse moment matrix. CG(Conjugate-Gradient) method is also applied for saving memory and computation time of wavelet transformed moment matrix. Numerical examples show that for rectangular cylinder case the non-zero elements of the transformed moment matrix grows only as O($N^{1.6}$).

  • In this paper, we propose a watermarking technique that embeds a digital watermark into digital images for the proof of owner or copyright protection. Proposed algorithm is based on discrete wavelet transform. Zerotree structure defined by Shapiro's embedded zerotree wavelet(EZW) algorithm is used. In the proposed algorithm, a digital watermark is embedded on only significant wavelet coefficients chosen by QSWT for the robustness of the algorithm. In other words, only the values of significant wavelet coefficients are modified in accordance with the given watermark pattern. We use the relationship among neighboring coefficients when modifying chosen coefficients to keep good image quality. Visual recognizable patterns such as binary images are used as a watermark. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has robustness under a variety of attacks such as JPEG compression, sharpening and blurring and also show that it has a better performance in PSNR comparing with other algorithms.

  • This paper presents wavelet-based moving object segmentation using double change detection and background registration. Three successive frame differences for detection change were used in the wavelet domain. The background was constructed with the wavelet coefficients in the lowest frequency subband which are the approximated version of an image. Combining double change detection and background registration, we can obtain an efficient moving object segmentation algorithm.

High-order, closely-spaced modal parameter estimation using wavelet analysis

  • This study examines the wavelet transform for output-only system identification of ambient excited engineering structures with emphasis on its utilization for modal parameter estimation of high-order and closely-spaced modes. Sophisticated time-frequency resolution analysis has been carried out by employing the modified complex Morlet wavelet function for better adaption and flexibility of the time-frequency resolution to extract two closely-spaced frequencies. Furthermore, bandwidth refinement techniques such as a bandwidth resolution adaptation, a broadband filtering technique and a narrowband filtering one have been proposed in the study for the special treatments of high-order and closely-spaced modal parameter estimation. Ambient responses of a 5-story steel frame building have been used in the numerical example, using the proposed bandwidth refinement techniques, for estimating the modal parameters of the high-order and closely-spaced modes. The first five natural frequencies and damping ratios of the structure have been estimated; furthermore, the comparison among the various proposed bandwidth refinement techniques has also been examined.

  • This paper describes a fault location technique using wavelets in underground transmission power cable system. Estimation of fault location is performed using data smapled at two ends underground system. In the case of 50% fault of total underground transmission line, fault location is calculated using sampled single-end data in underground transmission line. Traveling wave is utilized in capturing the travel time of the transients along the monitored lines between the relay and the fault point. This traveling time information is provided by the wavelet. Simulation was performed using EMTP, ATP Draw and MATLAB. The results of fault location shown in this paper will be evaluated as an effective suggestion for fault location in real underground transmission line.

  • We present an innovative real-time laser welding monitoring technique employing the correlation analysis of the plasma plume optical emission generated during the process. The plasma optical radiation emitted during Nd:YAG laser welding of S45C steel samples has detected with a Photodiode and analyzed under different process conditions. The discrete DC voltage difference, filter methods and wavelet transform has been used to decompose the optical signal into various discrete series of sequences over different frequency bands. Considering that wavelet analysis can decompose the optical signals, extract the characteristic information of the signals and define the defects location accurately, it can be used to implement process-control of laser welding.

Modification of ground motions using wavelet transform and VPS algorithm

  • In this paper a simple approach is presented for spectral matching of ground motions utilizing the wavelet transform and a recently developed metaheuristic optimization technique. For this purpose, wavelet transform is used to decompose the original ground motions to several levels, where each level covers a special range of frequency, and then each level is multiplied by a variable. Subsequently, the vibrating particles system (VPS) algorithm is employed to calculate the variables such that the error between the response and target spectra is minimized. The application of the proposed method is illustrated through modifying 12 sets of ground motions. The results achieved by this method demonstrate its capability in solving the problem. The outcomes of the VPS algorithm are compared to those of the standard colliding bodies optimization (CBO) to illustrate the importance of the enhancement of the algorithm.

  • In this paper, a new image compression technique, which uses lifting scheme and pyramid vector quantization, is proposed. Lifting scheme is a new technique to generate wavelets and to perform wavelet transform, and pyramid vector quantization is a kind of vector quantization which dose not have codebook neither codebook generation algorithm. For the purpose of realizing more compression rate, an arithmetic entropy coder is used. Proposed algorithm is compared with other wavelet based image coder and with JPEG which uses DCT and adaptive Huffman entropy coder. Simulation results showed that the performance of proposed algorithm is much better than that of others in point of PSNR and bpp.
