  • A method to find the nearly optimal PSNR values for compression was tried to remotely sensed images. There is no rule to find the best wavelet pairs for image processing. The expected wavelet pairs following the suggested algorithm showed the optimal result for various kinds of images. Firstly, the PSNR variations with three wavelet families were analyzed. In many cases the longer wavelet filter shows the higher PSNR value, but the rate is getting less in orthogonal wavelet families. Wavelets with moderate filter length are suggested at the point of computational cost. For biorthogonal families it was hard to predict from the length of filters. Multiresolution wavelet analysis was used up to level 3 with three kinds of wavelet families. Biorthogonal wavelet family showed irregular pattern to get the maximum PSNR values, while orthogonal wavelet families showed regular pattern. In orthogonal wavelet families the nearly optimal wavelet pair can be predicted from the level 1.

  • The ordinary stereo image of an object consists of data of left and right views. Therefore, the left and right image pairs have to be transmitted simultaneously in order to display 3-dimentional video at the remote site. However, due to the twice data in comparing with a monoscopic image of the same object, it needs to be compressed for fast transmission and resource saving. Hence, it needs an effective coding algorithm for compressing stereo image. It was found previously that compressing left and right frames independently will achieve the compression ratio lower than compressing by utilizing the spatial redundancy between both frames. Therefore, in this paper, we study the stereo image compression technique based on the multiresolution wavelet transform using varied disparity-block size for estimation and compensation. The size of disparity-block in the stereo pair subbands are scaling on a coarse-to-fine wavelet coefficients strategy. Finally, the reference left image and residual right image after disparity estimation and compensation are coded by using SPIHT coding. The considered method demonstrates good performance in both PSNR measures and visual quality for stereo image.

  • In this paper, we propose a blind watermarking that embeds watermarks into wavelet middle frequency subbands using human visual system. Wavelet middle frequency pairs(MFP) show similar distortion against general image processing attacks such as compression and filtering. So the quantization between MFPs is more robust than conventional methods that directly quantize DWT coefficients. We use a noise visibility function(NVF) to obtain a good visual quality This is able to preserve embedding positions after many attacks. Our experimental results show that the proposed scheme is robust to various image processing such as JPEG, while preserving good visual quality above 44㏈.

  • In the closed range space, the parallel two CCD cameras are used to acquire a pair of stereo image. The acquired stereo image are computed with Wavelet Transform repeatedly and including the low frequency component, the image size of those are reduced. It is the pyramid structure. The optimum matching point is searched to the pixel. Then appling the optimum matching point to DLT, it extract the three - dimensional surface coordinate from a stereo image. The direct linear transformation(DLT) method is used to calibrate the stereo camera compute the coordinate on a three dimensional space. To find the parameters for the DLT method, 30 control points which marked on the cylinder type object are used. To improve the matching algorithm, the paper select the pyramid structure for Wavelet Transform. The acquired disparity information is used to represent the really three-dimensional surface coordinate.

  • We propose new reversible watermarking method for images. Being reversibility, original image and watermarked message should be recovered exactly. We propose different technique for hiding data to pairs. We use new type of histogram (pair histogram), which shows frequencies of each pair in image. We use histogram shift method for data embedding to pairs. We also propose improved version of method which allow hiding data with good performance for high capacities. This algorithm has better result compare to Tian's difference expansion method based on the Haar wavelet decomposition. For proposed algorithm capacity is higher under same PSNR.

  • A quadrature pair of filter banks that are composed of a pair of cosine and sine modulated filter banks is applied to MC-CDMA data transmultiplexing in the view point of mitigating inter-channel interferences. Exploiting superior capabilities of wavelet properties in composing the filter banks the proposed scheme is capable of compromising inter-channel interference problems better than the conventional DFT-based MC-CDMA due to superior subchannelization effects. To verify the behavior of our proposed MC-CDMA system based on the quadrature filter banks the reverse-link bit error rates with respect to signal-to-noise ratio under Rayleigth fading and additive white Gaussian noise channel environments are computed. The results show an improved system performance over the conventional MC-CDMA in the view point of minimizing interference effects.

  • A quantitative prediction method for initial crack length in a carbon/epoxy (CF/EP) composite beam using active piezoelectric transducers was established in this study. Wavelet Transform (WT)-based signal processing and identification technique in time-frequency domain was developed to facilitate the determination of damage presence and severity. Dynamic response of a CF/EP composites beam containing a continuously expanding crack, coupled with a pair of active piezoelectric disks, was examined under a narrow band excitation, and then applied with the proposed signal processing technique.

  • To obtain a shear-wave velocity profile in geotechnical practice, various seismic investigation methods which have their own strength and weakness are being frequently used. Generally, geotechnical site have lateral variation of the properties, so it is needed to determine 2-dimensional shear wave velocity imaging of the site. In this study, harmonic wavelet analysis of wave (HWAW) method is applied to determination of 2-D $V_s$ imaging. HWAW method which is based on time-frequency analysis using harmonic wavelet transform have been developed to determine phase and group velocities of waves. HWAW method uses the signal portion of the maximum local signal/noise ratio to evaluate the phase velocity to minimize the effects of noise. HWAW method determine detailed local $V_s$ profile because one experimental setup which consists of one pair of receivers with spacing of 1~3m is used to determine the dispersion curve of the whole depth. So, 2-D Vs imaging with relatively high resolution can be determined through a series of HWAW test. In order to estimate the applicability of HWAW method, field tests were performed in 4 sites. Through field applications and comparison with other test results, the good accuracy and applicability of the proposed method were verified.

  • An extension of the well-known Fourier transform is developed in this paper. It is denoted as the generalized Fourier transform(GFT), since it encompasses the Fourier transform as its special case. The first idea of this extension can be found on [1]. In the definition of the N-point discrete GFT, it first construct a passband in time which functions as a window in the time domain. An appropriate interpretation of each variables are introduced during the definition of the GFT, followed by the formal derivation of the inverse GFT. This transform pair is similar to the windowing in the frequency domain such as the subband coding technique (or filter bank approach) and could be extended to the wavelet transform.

  • In this paper, we proposed a method for extracting facial characteristics of human being in an image. Given a pair of gray level sample images taken with and without human being, the face of human being is segmented from the image. Noise in the input images is removed with the help of Gaussian filters. Edge maps are found of the two input images. The binary edge differential image is obtained from the difference of the two input edge maps. A mask for face detection is made from the process of erosion followed by dilation on the resulting binary edge differential image. This mask is used to extract the human being from the two input image sequences. Features of face are extracted from the segmented image. An effective recognition system using the discrete wave let transform (DWT) is used for recognition. For extracting the facial features, such as eyebrows, eyes, nose and mouth, edge detector is applied on the segmented face image. The area of eye and the center of face are found from horizontal and vertical components of the edge map of the segmented image. other facial features are obtained from edge information of the image. The characteristic vectors are extrated from DWT of the segmented face image. These characteristic vectors are normalized between +1 and -1, and are used as input vectors for the neural network. Simulation results show recognition rate of 100% on the learned system, and about 92% on the test images.
