The seismic holding behaviors of plate anchor embedded into submerged coarse-grained soils were investigated considering different anchor inclinations. The limit equilibrium method and the Pseudo-Dynamic Approach (PDA) were employed to calculate the inertia force of the soils within the failure rupture. In addition, assuming the permeability of coarse-grained soils was sufficiently large, the coefficient of hydrodynamic force applied on the inclined plate anchor is obtained through adopting the exact potential flow theory. Therefore, the seismic holding resistance was calculated as the combination of the inertia force and the hydrodynamic force within the failure rupture. The failure rupture can be developed due to the uplift loads, which was assumed to be an arc of a circle perpendicular to the anchor and inclines at (π/4 - φ/2). Then, the derived analytical solutions were evaluated by comparing the static breakout factor Nγ to the published experimental and analytical results. The influences of soil and wave properties on the plate anchor holding behavior are reported. Finally, the dynamic anchor holding coefficients Nγd, were reported to illustrate the anchor holding behaviors. Results show that the soil accelerations in x and z directions were both nonlinear. The amplifications of soil accelerations were more severe at lower normalized frequencies (ωH/V) compared to higher normalized frequencies. The coefficient of hydrodynamic force, C, of the plate anchor was found to be almost constant with anchor inclinations. Finally, the seismic anchor holding coefficient oscillated with the oscillation of the inertia force on the plate anchor.

The drift force acting on a freely-floating sphere in water of finite depth is studied within the framework of a linear potential theory. A velocity potential describing fluid motion is determined by distribution pulsating sources and dipoles on the immersed surface of the sphere. Upon knowing values of the potential, hydrodynamic forces are evaluated by integrating pressures over the immersed surface of the sphere. The motion response of the sphere in water of finite depth is obtained by solving the equation of motion. From these results, the drift force on the sphere is evaluated by the momentum theorem, in which a far-field velocity potential is utilized in forms of Kochin function. The drift force coefficient Cdr of a fixed sphere increases monotononically with non-dimensional wave frequency ${\sigma}a$. On the other hand, in freely-floating case, the Cdr has a peak value at ${\sigma}a$ of heave resonance. The magnitude of the drift force coefficient Cdr in the case of finite depth is different form that for deep water, but the general tendency seems to be similar in both cases. It is to note that Cdr is greater than 1.0 when non-dimensional water depth d/a is 1.5 in the case of freely-floating sphere.

A MCS technique is represented to stochastically analyze the uncertainties of wave forces exerted on the upright sections of composite breakwaters. A stochastical models for horizontal and uplift wave forces can be straightforwardly formulated as a function of the probabilistic characteristics of maximum wave height. Under the assumption of wave forces followed by extreme distribution, the behaviors of relative wave forces to Goda's wave forces are studied by the MCS technique. Double-truncated normal distribution is applied to take the effects of uncertainties of scale and shape parameters of extreme distribution into account properly. Averages and variances of relative wave forces are quantitatively calculated with respect to the exceedance probabilities of maximum design wave height. It is found that the averages of relative wave forces may be decreased consistently with the increases of the exceedance probabilities. In particular, the averages on uplift wave force are evaluated slightly larger than those on horizontal wave force, but the variations of coefficient of the former are adversely smaller than those of the latter. It means that the uncertainties of uplift wave forces are smaller than those of horizontal wave forces in the same condition of the exceedance probabilities. Therefore, the present results could be useful to the reliability based-design method that require the statistical properties about the uncertainties of wave forces.

In this study, a spectral fatigue analysis was performed for the topside structure of an offshore floating vessel. The topside structure was idealized using beam elements in the SACS program. The fatigue analysis was carried out considering the wave and wind loads separately. For the wave-induced fatigue damage calculation, motion RAOs calculated from a direct wave load analysis and regular waves with different periods and unit wave heights were utilized. Then, the member end force transfer functions were generated covering all the loading conditions. Stress response transfer functions at each joint were produced using the specified SCFs and member end force transfer functions. fatigue damages were calculated using the obtained stress ranges, S-N curve, wave spectrum, heading probability of each loading condition, and their corresponding occurrences in the wave scatter diagrams. For the wind induced fatigue damage calculation, a dynamic wind spectral fatigue analysis was performed. First, a dynamic natural frequency analysis was performed to generate the structural dynamic characteristics, including the eigenvalues (natural frequencies), eigenvectors (mode shapes), and mass matrix. To adequately represent the dynamic characteristic of the structure, the number of modes was appropriately determined in the lateral direction. Second, a wind spectral fatigue analysis was performed using the mode shapes and mass data obtained from the previous results. In this analysis, the Weibull distribution of the wind speed occurrence, occurrence probability in each direction, damping coefficient, S-N curves, and SCF of each joint were defined and used. In particular, the wind fatigue damages were calculated under the assumption that the stress ranges followed a Rayleigh distribution. The total fatigue damages were calculated from the combination with wind and wave fatigue damages according to the DNV rule.

A floating Oscillating Water Column (OWC) wave energy converter, a Backward Bent Duct Buoy (BBDB), was simulated using a state-of-the-art, two-dimensional, fully-nonlinear Numerical Wave Tank (NWT) technique. The hydrodynamic performance of the floating OWC device was evaluated in the time domain. The acceleration potential method, with a full-updated kernel matrix calculation associated with a mode decomposition scheme, was implemented to obtain accurate estimates of the hydrodynamic force and displacement of a freely floating BBDB. The developed NWT was based on the potential theory and the boundary element method with constant panels on the boundaries. The mixed Eulerian-Lagrangian (MEL) approach was employed to capture the nonlinear free surfaces inside the chamber that interacted with a pneumatic pressure, induced by the time-varying airflow velocity at the air duct. A special viscous damping was applied to the chamber free surface to represent the viscous energy loss due to the BBDB's shape and motions. The viscous damping coefficient was properly selected using a comparison of the experimental data. The calculated surface elevation, inside and outside the chamber, with a tuned viscous damping correlated reasonably well with the experimental data for various incident wave conditions. The conservation of the total wave energy in the computational domain was confirmed over the entire range of wave frequencies.
An improved method is presented to estimate the axial force of a bar member with vibrational measurements based on modified Timoshenko beam theory. Bending stiffness effects, rotational inertia, shear deformation, rotational inertia caused by shear deformation are all taken into account. Axial forces are estimated with certain natural frequency and corresponding mode shape, which are acquired from dynamic tests with five accelerometers. In the paper, modified Timoshenko beam theory is first presented with the inclusion of axial force and rotational inertia effects. Consistent mass and stiffness matrices for the modified Timoshenko beam theory are derived and then used in finite element simulations to investigate force identification accuracy under different boundary conditions and the influence of critical axial force ratio. The deformation coefficient which accounts for rotational inertia effects of the shearing deformation is discussed, and the relationship between the changing wave speed and the frequency is comprehensively examined to improve accuracy of the deformation coefficient. Finally, dynamic tests are conducted in our laboratory to identify progressive axial forces of a steel plate and a truss structure respectively. And the axial forces identified by the proposed method are in good agreement with the forces measured by FBG sensors and strain gauges. A significant advantage of this axial force identification method is that no assumption on boundary conditions is needed and excellent force identification accuracy can be achieved.

The eigenfunction expansion method is appled for the wave scattering by a vertical slotted, where both the inertial and quadratic drag terms are involved. Quadratic drag term representing the energy loss is linearized by the application of socalled equivalent linearization. The drag coefficient, which was empirically determined by Yoon et al.(2006) and Huang(2007) is used. Analytical results are verified by comparison to the experimental results conducted by Kwon et al.(2014) and Zhu and Chwang(2001). Using the developed design tool, the effect of energy loss by a vertical slotted wall is estimated with various design parameters, such as porosity, submergence depth, shape of slits and wave characteristics. It is found that the maximum value of energy loss across the slotted wall is generated at porosity value less than P = 0.1. The present solutions can provide a good predictive tools to estimate the wave absorbing efficiency by a slotted-wall breakwater.
One of the major factors affecting maneuverability of an athlete is frictional force caused at an outsole of his shoe. The magnitude of the frictional force is closely related to pattern and hardness of outsole and roughness of ground or floor. This study then focuses on the effect of outsole pattern of sports shoes on the frictional force. After surveying outsole patterns of sports shoes in markets, we select 4 types of outsole patterns, such as straight, W, O, and wave as primary outsole patterns of sports shoe and we also select depth, pitch and slope as design parameters of each pattern. Corresponding to those patterns and design parameters, various outsole specimen are prepared for frictional experiments. After performing frictional tests with those specimen, coefficients of friction(COF) are collected and analyzed with a statistical tool to draw useful conclusion.

The three-dimensional unsteady compressible Euler equation solver with ALE, CFD code, PAM-FLOW based on FEM method has been applied to analyze the flow field around the high speed train which is entering into a channel. From the present study, the pressure and flow transients were calculated and analyzed. The generation of compression wave was observed ahead of train and the high pressure in the gap between the train and the tunnel was also found due to the blockage effects. It was found that abrupt fluctuation in pressure exists in the region from train nose to shoulder of train corresponding to 10% of total length of train during tunnel entry. Computed time history of aerodynamic forces of train during tunnel entry show that drag coefficient rapidly rises and saturates at about non-dimensional time 0.31. The total increase of drag coefficient before and after tunnel entry is about 1.1%. Transient profile of lift force shows similar pattern to drag coefficient except abrupt drop after saturation and lift force in the tunnel increases 0.08% more than that before tunnel entry.
This study was conducted to estimate the stability of a quay wall in case of wave overtopping under the combined action of an earthquake and tsunami using limit equilibrium method. The tsunami force was calculated by using a numerical program called TWOPM-3D (3-D one-field Model for immiscible TWO-Phase flows). Especially, the wave force acting behind the quay wall after a tsunami wave overtopping was estimated by treating back fill as a permeable material. The stability of the quay wall was assessed for both the sliding and overturning modes under passive and active conditions. The variation in the stability of the quay wall with time was determined by parametric studies, including those for the tsunami wave height, seismic acceleration coefficient, internal friction angle of the soil, wall friction angle, and pore water pressure ratio. When the earthquake and tsunami were considered simultaneously, the tsunami induced wave overtopping increased the stability of the quay wall under the passive condition, but in the active condition, the safety factors decreased.
