  • The motion of small fishing vessels is significantly affected by small waves, leading to accidents, such as capsizing or sinking. This paper presents the results of two types of basin tests. The first test analyzed the characteristics of roll and pitch motions among regular waves with the same wave steepness using the drifting state of three (3G/T, 7G/T, 10G/T) small fishing vessels. The second test analyzed the motion characteristics of the 7G/T fishing vessel under different wave steepness. The first test showed that heave and roll motions are significant in the beam sea, while pitch motion is significant in the bow and stern seas. The second test shows that wave steepness has a linear relationship with roll and pitch motions in the bow and stern seas.

  • The stability of the existing ships has been evaluated through numerical calculations in the steady-state, but recently the IMO proposed a new stability assessment criteria that the stability is evaluated in the state in which environmental loads from such as waves and wind act like the loads under actual ship operating conditions. In this study, IMO 2nd generation stability assessment method and procedure were summarized for the dead ship condition, and Direct Stability Assessment (DSA) was performed on 13K chemical tanker through basin model test. The model test is performed in the ocean engineering basin to implement wave and wind loads, and environmental conditions for waves were set height and period of the incident wave, considering the regular wave and wind generation range reproducible in the ocean engineering basin. In addition, to consider the effect of wind speed, the Beaufort Scale for wind speed was applied in the model test.

  • Linear and nonlinear motion responses of a Tension Leg Platform(TLP) was investigated by model tests. The model tests were carried out at KRISO's Ocean Engineering Basin which has a deep pit of which diameter and depth are 5 meters and 12.5 meters, respectively. Optical sensors were used for measuring drift motions, and a set of accelerometers were employed for analyzing wave frequency motions. ISSC TLP was chosen as the model for the present study. Scale ratio was 1/65 and elastic modelling of tether system were conducted. Very good agreement was obtained between experimental results and theoretical calculations not only in linear motion responses but tension responses, nonlinear wave drift force and double frequency excitations.

  • The safety and stability of 5MW class offshore wind turbine Jack-up platform was investigated through ocean basin experiment. For simulating the environmental condition of yellow sea in the South Korea, diverse waves, winds and currents were performed based on Froude's number. Regular wave and irregular wave based on Froude's number were applied to the wind turbine structure. In experiments, the height and period of regular wave type were scaled down as the 1:50 ratio of real wave condition. Irregular wave type was simulated with TMA(Texel Storm, Marsen and Arsloe)spectrum. The vertical reaction force, resonance period and wave pressure applied to multi-supporters of wind offshore structure were measured experimentally. Finally, the results showed that the capsizing situation of the offshore structure was generated by the severe environmental condition.

  • In this paper, the performance of a wave absorbing system using an inclined punching plate, was investigated. Using the multi-domain boundary element method (BEM), the reflection coefficients of an inclined punching plate were tested with various design parameters, such as inclined angle, porosity, and wave frequencies. To confirm the numerical solutions, the systematic model test was conducted at 2-D tank and square tank. The numerical results were in good agreement with the experimental results within the entire frequency range. It was found that an inclined punching plate had an excellent wave absorbing efficiency, compared to a horizontal one. Also, the optimal range of an inclined angle had an excellent wave absorbing efficiency, compared to a horizontal one the optimal range of the inclined angle is 10°<β<20°. The developed wave absorber was installed at KRISO's square basin, and is working effectively for various model tests.

  • Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) units have the advantages of their ability to provide storage and offloading capabilities which are not available in other types of floating production systems. In addition, FPSOs also provide a large deck area and substantial topsides payload capacity. They are in use in a variety of water depths and environments around the world. It is a good solution for offshore oil and gas development in fields where there is lack of an export pipeline system to shore. However due to their inherently high motions in waves, they are limited in the types of risers they can host. The Low Motion FPSO (LM-FPSO) is a novel design that is developed to maintain the advantages of the conventional FPSOs while offering significantly lower motion responses. The LM-FPSO design generally consists of a box-shape hull with large storage capacity, a free-hanging solid ballast tank (SBT) located certain distance below the hull keel, a few groups of tendons arranged to connect the SBT to the hull, a mooring system for station keeping, and a riser system. The addition of SBT to the floater results in a significant increase in heave, roll and pitch natural periods, mainly through the mass and added mass of the SBT, which significantly reduces motions in the wave frequency range. Model tests were performed at the Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO) in the fall of 2016. An analytical model of the basin model (MOM) was created in Orcaflex and calibrated against the basin-model. Good agreement is achieved between global performance results from MOM's predictions and basin model measurements. The model test measurements have further verified the superior motion response of LM-FPSO. In this paper, numerical results are presented to demonstrate the comparison and correlation of the MOM results with model test measurements. The verification of the superior motion response through model test measurements is also presented in this paper.

  • At starting point, 1D velocity models were inverted by using 430 events with P-wave 5147, S-wave 3729 from KIGAM, KMA, KEPRI, and KINS's seismic networks. A minimum 1D model shows that P-wave velocities are around $6.0{\pm}0.5\;km/s$ slowly increasing with depth between surface and 15 km. The velocities are about $6.4{\pm}0.2\;km/s$ below 15km to 35km. The earthquake data number for 3D tomography was 630 adding to previous 430 events with limitation of more than 6 station detection and relocation stability of location. The checkerboard test shows that only upper curst part from surface to 17 km have reliable resolution. The results of upper crust part present that the boundary of Gyeong-sang basin and Youngnam massif is mach well velocity variation pattern. The western part of the basin is shown as lower velocity and south-eastern part as higher. This is because that sedimentary rocks are widely located around western part of the basin and volcanic origin rocks are distributed around south-eastern part.

  • An experimental method to investigate the dynamic characteristics of buoys in extreme environmental condition is established. Because the buoy model requires a resonable size for accurate experiment, the test condition in model basin that satisfies the similarity law is hardly compatible with capability of test facilities. It is suggested that the linear wave component that is unable to satisfy similarity is separated with others. The model experiment is carried out with mitigated condition for the linear wave components while others including wave drift, current and wind are keeping the similarities. Then, the result can be extrapolated to give the dynamic behavior of buoys n extreme condition because linear wave component is solely responsibly to oscillatory buoy motion and other environmental components are applied as a initial tension. The similarity for current and wind conditions is viewed as equivalence of restoring forces. The validity of proposed method is examined with different types of standard ocean buoys and it indicates that the linearity of measured characteristics is assured with a limitation of resonable distance between test and estimated wave conditions.

  • In order to investigate maneuvering characteristics of KCS in waves, captive model test in regular waves was conducted. Purpose of the test is measuring maneuvering hull forces when ship is maneuvering in waves. Model test was carried out using CPMC (Computerized Planar Motion Carriage) of ocean engineering basin in KRISO (Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean engineering). Total 6 degrees-of-freedom motion were fixed by two points supporting captive model test device, which is specially designed for this test. This system estimates 6 degrees-of-freedom forces and moments through 12 strain gauge signals. Mapping matrix from strain gauge signals to 6 degrees-of-freedom forces and moments was derived by a well-organized calibration test. Static drift test was conducted in calm sea and in regular waves with various wave conditions. Hydrodynamic coefficients related to drift angle were extracted for each wave conditions, and the effect of waves on course stability was analyzed.
