  • Quality control (QC) to process observed time series has become more critical as the types and amount of observed data have increased along with the development of ocean observing sensors and communication technology. International ocean observing institutions have developed and operated automatic QC procedures for these observed time series. In this study, the performance of automated QC procedures proposed by U.S. IOOS (Integrated Ocean Observing System), NDBC (National Data Buy Center), and OOI (Ocean Observatory Initiative) were evaluated for observed time-series particularly from the Yellow and East China Seas by taking advantage of a confusion matrix. We focused on detecting additive outliers (AO) and temporary change outliers (TCO) based on ocean temperature observation from the Ieodo Ocean Research Station (I-ORS) in 2013. Our results present that the IOOS variability check procedure tends to classify normal data as AO or TCO. The NDBC variability check tracks outliers well but also tends to classify a lot of normal data as abnormal, particularly in the case of rapidly fluctuating time-series. The OOI procedure seems to detect the AO and TCO most effectively and the rate of classifying normal data as abnormal is also the lowest among the international checks. However, all three checks need additional scrutiny because they often fail to classify outliers when intermittent observations are performed or as a result of systematic errors, as well as tending to classify normal data as outliers in the case where there is abrupt change in the observed data due to a sensor being located within a sharp boundary between two water masses, which is a common feature in shallow water observations. Therefore, this study underlines the necessity of developing a new QC algorithm for time-series occurring in a shallow sea.

  • National groundwater monitoring stations have been managed throughout the country by Korea Water Resources Corporation (KOWACO) in order to monitor variations in quantity and quality of groundwater resources. A multi-sensor installed in each monitoring station well measures groundwater level, water temperature and electrical conductivity every six hours and the logged data are automatically transmitted to a host computer in KOWACO. Meanwhile despite regular station inspection and replacement of deteriorate or broken devices, abnormal values or outliers often occur due to intrinsic limitations of automatic monitoring and transmission. Thus prompt recognition and measures to these values are essentially required to reduce disturbance and missing period of the data. In this study, time and frequency of outlier occurrence were analyzed for the water level data obtained from national groundwater monitoring stations within the Han river basin in 2000. The analysis results indicated that the most prominent patterns of the outliers were rapid decline for water level, no variation for temperature and steep decline for electrical conductivity. This study provided a sample criterion for determining the outlier for each parameter.

  • This study estimates MODIS-derived evapotranspiration data quality by revised RS-PM algorithm in Seolmacheon test basin. We used latent flux with eddy covariance method to evaluate MODIS-derived spatial evapotranspiration and gap-filled these data by three methods (FAO-PM, MDV and Kalman Filter) and to quantify daily evapotranspiration. Gap-filled daily evapotranspiration data was used to evaluate evapotranspiration computed by revised RS-PM algorithm derived MODIS satellite images. For the water budget analysis, we used soil moisture content that is quantified to average individual soil moisture rate observed by TDR (Time Domain Reflectometry) sensor at soil depth. The soil moisture variation is calculated in consideration from initial to final soil moisture content. According to the result of this study, evapotranspiration computed by revised RS-PM algorithm is very larger than eddy covariance data gap-filled by three methods. Also, water budget characteristics is not closed. We could analysis that MODIS-derived spatial evapotranspiration does not represent actual evapotranspiration in Seolmacheon.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between quality factors and palatability of modified Doenjang and traditional Doenjang. Fourteen types of Doenjang, including three modified Doenjang and 11 traditional Doenjang samples, were analyzed to evaluate their physicochemical and sensorial properties. There were differences in e-tongue, which indicates overall acceptability. Water contents, minerals, total sugar contents, salt contents, pH, titratable acidity, and free amino acids of Doenjang did not show significant differences. From the correlation and regression analysis, palatability was closely related to the e-tongue sensor such as $X_1$ (sourness), $X_3$ (saltiness), and $X_4$ (umami) to -0.772, -0.642, and 0.678, respectively. The regression equation for sensorial palatability (Y) was Y=$45.356-0.008X_1-0.010X_3$ with a coefficient of 0.882.

  • This study, multispectral and hyperspectral sensors were utilized to use radiometric cross validation for the purpose of radiometric quality evaluation of a 'KOMPSAT-3'. Images of EO-1 Hyperion and Landsat-8 OLI sensors taken in PICS site were used. 2 sections that have 2 different types of ground coverage respectively were selected as the site of cross validation based on aerial hyperspectral sensor and TOA Reflectance. As a result of comparison between the TOA reflectance figures of KOMPSAT-3, EO-1 Hyperion and CASI-1500, the difference was roughly 4%. It is considered that it satisfies the radiological quality standard when the difference of figure of reflectance in a comparison to the other satellites is found within 5%. The difference in Blue, Green, Red band was approximately 3% as a comparison result of TOA reflectance. However the figure was relatively low in NIR band in a comparison to Landsat-8. It is thought that the relatively low reflectance is because there is a difference of band passes in NIR band of 2 sensors and in a case of KOMPSAT-3 sensor, a section of 940nm, which shows the strong absorption through water vapor, is included in band pass resulting in comparatively low reflectance. To overcome these conditions, more detailed analysis with the application of rescale method as Spectral Bandwidth Adjustment Factor (SBAF) is required.

  • Information and Communication Technology (ICT) remote soil moisture control system including soil sensing, automatic water supply chain, and remote alarming system was established on reclaimed land and operated stably. The system was operated using river water around the reclaimed land without fertilizer. On applying this system to control soil moisture, the kenaf germination rate was improved up to two times. Kenaf biomass was 4,748 kg/10a and was higher than that of untreated soil moisture management. When the nutritious liquid fertilizer was used, kenaf yield reached 8,390 kg/10a, which was lower than 10,848 kg/10a of the non-reclaimed land treated with standard chemical fertilizers. As the soil moisture was managed stably through the ICT remote soil moisture control system, the quality of the kenaf crop was improved, resulting in a 7% increase in dry weight, and a 11.5% increase in plant hardness. The estimated kenaf yield was 5,039 kg/10a when 800 tonnes of water were supplied by the ICT remote soil moisture control system with the stream water around Saemangeum reclaimed land without chemical fertilizers and organic matter.

  • Drought stress caused by global climate change is a serious problem for rice cultivation. Increasingly frequent abnormal weather occurrences could include severe drought, which could cause water stress to rice during the seedling stage. This experiment was conducted to clarify the effects of drought during the seedling period on yield and quality of rice. Drought conditions were created in a rain shelter house facility. The drought treatment was conducted at 3, 10, and 20 days after transplanting. Soil water content was measured by a soil moisture sensor during the whole growth stage. In this study, we have chosen 3 rice cultivars which are widely cultivated in Korea: 'Haedamssal' (Early maturing), 'Samkwang' (Medium maturing), and 'Saenuri' (Mid-late maturing). The decrease in yield due to drought treatment was most severe 3 days after transplanting because of the decrease in the number of effective tillers. The decrease in grain quality due to drought treatment was also most severe 3 days after transplanting because of the increased protein content and hardness of the grains. The cultivar 'Haedamssal' was the most severely damaged by water stress, resulting in about a 30% yield loss. Drought conditions diminished the early vigorous growth period and days to heading in early-maturing cultivars. The results show that drought stress affects yield components immediately after transplanting, which is a decisive factor in reducing yield and grain quality. This study can be used as basic data to calculate damage compensation for drought damage on actual rice farms.

  • This study investigated seasonal characteristics of the particulate matter (PM) in the atmosphere and rainwater quality in Busan, South Korea, and evaluated the seasonal effect of PM10 concentration in the atmosphere on the rainwater quality using multivariate statistical analysis. The concentration of PM in the atmosphere and meteorological observations(daily precipitation amount and rainfall intensity) are obtained from automatic weather systems (AWS) by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) from March 2020 to August 2020. Rainwater samples (n = 216, 13 rain events) were continuously collected from the beginning of the precipitation using the rainwater collecting device at Pukyong National University. The samples were analyzed for pH, EC (electrical conductivity), water-soluble cations(Na+, Mg2+, K+, Ca2+, and NH4+), and anions(Cl-, NO3-, and SO42-). The concentration of PM10 in the atmosphere was steadily measured before and after the precipitation with a custom-built PM sensor node. The measured data were analyzed using principal component analysis (PCA) and Pearson correlation analysis to identify relationships between the concentration of PM10 in the atmosphere and rainwater quality. In spring, the daily average concentration of PM10 (34.11 ㎍/m3) and PM2.5 (19.23 ㎍/m3) in the atmosphere were relatively high, while the value of daily precipitation amount and rainfall intensity were relatively low. In addition, the concentration of PM10 in the atmosphere showed a significant positive correlation with the concentration of water-soluble ions (r = 0.99) and EC (r = 0.95) and a negative correlation with the pH (r = -0.84) of rainwater samples. In summer, the daily average concentration of PM10 (27.79 ㎍/m3) and PM2.5 (17.41 ㎍/m3) in the atmosphere were relatively low, and the maximum rainfall intensity was 81.6 mm/h, recording a large amount of rain for a long time. The results indicated that there was no statistically significant correlation between the concentration of PM10 in the atmosphere and rainwater quality in summer.
