  • Global concern and interest in the safety of nuclear power plants have increased considerably since the Fukushima accident. In the event of a severe accident, the reactor vessel water level cannot be measured. The reactor vessel water level has a direct impact on confirming the safety of reactor core cooling. However, in the event of a severe accident, it may be possible to estimate the reactor vessel water level by employing other information. The cascaded fuzzy neural network (CFNN) model can be used to estimate the reactor vessel water level through the process of repeatedly adding fuzzy neural networks. The developed CFNN model was found to be sufficiently accurate for estimating the reactor vessel water level when the sensor performance had deteriorated. Therefore, the developed CFNN model can help provide effective information to operators in the event of a severe accident.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of greenhouse cultivation area and groundwater level changes due to the water curtain cultivation in the greenhouse complexes, which are mainly situated along rivers where water resources are easy to secure. The groundwater observation network in Miryang, Gyeongsangnam-do, located downstream of the Nakdong River, was selected for the study area. We classified the groundwater monitoring well into the greenhouse (riverside) and field cultivation areas (plain and mountain) to compare the groundwater impact of water curtain cultivation in the greenhouse complex. The characteristics of groundwater level changes classified by terrain type were analyzed using the observed data. Riverside wells have significant permeability coefficients and are close to rivers, so they are greatly affected by river flow and precipitation changes so that water level shows a specific pattern of annual changes. Most plain wells do not show a constant annual change, but observation wells near small rivers and small-scale greenhouse cultivation areas sometimes show annual and daily changes in which the water level drops during winter. Compared to other observation wells, mountain wells do not show significant yearly changes in water level and show general characteristics of bedrock aquifer well with a low permeability coefficient.

  • This study aims to develop a drought monitoring scheme based on groundwater which can be exploit for water supply under drought stress. In this context, groundwater level can be used as a proxy for better understanding the temporal evolution of drought state. First, kernel density estimator is presented in the monthly groundwater level over the entire national groundwater stations. The estimated cumulative distribution function is then utilized to map the monthly groundwater level into the standardized groundwater level index (SGI). The SGI for each station was eventually converted into the index for major cities through the Thiessen polygon approach. We provide a drought classification for a given SGI to better characterize the degree of drought condition. Ultimately, we conclude that the proposed monitoring framework enables a more reliable estimation of the drought stress, especially for a limited water supply area.

  • We studied water level rising of drum versus time in the small hydraulic vertical water turbine system in this paper. The water level rises continuously up to a certain point with the passage of time if the constant incoming water is supplied, while it stops rising and maintains equilibrium state without any more rising because it increases position energy and evatually makes outgoing velocity and outgoing water quantities of runner area. The water level of drum is determined independent of size, height, width, figure of drum or runner configuration. It comes out that the water level is dependent only on the incoming and outgoing water quantities, and the output power has similar behavior. Therefore, desirable water level and output power are not available unless incoming water quantities is abundant. We validate this phenomina through applyng our methodolgies to the real small hydraulic vertical water turbine system under constructing and testing in industrial facilities in Korea.

  • Appropriate amount of water supply to paddy fields in proper time is important to achieve efficient agricultural water management. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the irrigation water supply adequacy for paddy fields using water level data in irrigation canals. For the evaluation, the real-time water level data were collected from main canals in the Dongjin irrigation district for 2 years. Using the water level data, delivered irrigation water amounts at the distribution points of each canal were calculated. The water balance model for paddy field was designed considering intermittent irrigation and the irrigation water requirement was estimated. Irrigation water supply adequacy was analyzed from main canals to the irrigation blocks based on the comparison between estimated requirement and delivered irrigation water amounts. From the adequacy analysis, irrigation water supply showed poor management condition in 2012 with low efficiency except the Daepyong canal section, and the adequacy in 2013 was good or fair except the Yongsung canal section. When irrigation water for paddy fields was insufficient, water supply adequacy was affected by irrigation area, but when irrigation water was enough to supply, adequacy was affected by distance from main canal to distribution points. These results of the spatial and temporal dimensions of the irrigation adequacy could be utilized for efficient irrigation water management to improve the temporal uniformity and equity in the water distribution for paddy fields.

  • In this article, we use an open source software library: TensorFlow, developed for the purposes of conducting very complex machine learning and deep neural network applications. However, the system is general enough to be applicable in a wide variety of other domains as well. The proposed model based on a deep neural network model, LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory) to predict the river water level at Okcheon Station of the Guem River without utilization of rainfall - forecast information. For LSTM modeling, the input data is hourly water level data for 15 years from 2002 to 2016 at 4 stations includes 3 upstream stations (Sutong, Hotan, and Songcheon) and the forecasting-target station (Okcheon). The data are subdivided into three purposes: a training data set, a testing data set and a validation data set. The model was formulated to predict Okcheon Station water level for many cases from 3 hours to 12 hours of lead time. Although the model does not require many input data such as climate, geography, land-use for rainfall-runoff simulation, the prediction is very stable and reliable up to 9 hours of lead time with the Nash - Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) is higher than 0.90 and the root mean square error (RMSE) is lower than 12cm. The result indicated that the method is able to produce the river water level time series and be applicable to the practical flood forecasting instead of hydrologic modeling approaches.

  • A new thermal type fluid level transmitter was designed and tested at the HITROL R&D institute. The relation of heat transfer and electric resistance was adopted as an operation principle. The length of a fabricated level transmitter was two meters and a water under normal temperature was used as a working fluid for the experiment Finally, the new product could have a high precision, acceptable accuracy and reasonable response time. Foreign-made level transmitter of this type is under in use for measuring water level of containment building in nuclear power plants so far. It is expected that new product will substitute it.

  • The effect of water extract of antler on serum level of female hormones was investigated in ovariectemized rats. Sprague-Dawley rats were ovariectomized(ox). After a further 40 days the animals were administrated with water extract of antler (625mg/kg daily) for 10, 20 and 30 days, respectively. Serum level of estradiol, progesterone, leutenizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone were measured. Significant increase of serum estradiol level was elicited at 20 and 30 days after treatment with water extract of antler, respectively, Associated with the increase of serum estradiol level, there was a concomitant decrease in serum follicle stimulating hormone level. Serum progesterone level was also significantly increased at 30 days after treatment with water extract of antler. Although serum leutenizing hormone level of ox rats treated with water extract of anther was slightly lower than that of untreated ox rats, the decrease was not significant.

  • In tidal rivers, the river level, discharge and tide are interrelated. Therefore, the stage-discharge relation that takes no account of tidal effects is inaccurate. For the calculation of river discharge in low water level, this paper attempts to formulate a multiple regression equation of stage-discharge curve to calculate the river discharge in low water level with variables as river level and differences between sea level and river level. Numerical application were perfonned on Ulsan gaging station in Taehwa river, and the comparison with existing rating curve equation showed good applicability of this multiple regression equation.uation.

  • The effect of water level on the free vibration of a partially water-filled two rectangular plates structure was investigated by experimental modal analysis and finite element analysis using ANSYS computer program. Modal parameters of two rectangular plates coupled with water were obtained by means of experiment and the FEM solutions were compared with the experimental solutions to verify the finite element model. As a result, the comparison between the experiment and FEM results showed excellent agreement. The transverse vibration modes, in-phase and out-of-phase, were observed alternately in the fluid-coupled system. The effect of water level and water gap size on the fluid-coupled natural frequency were investigated. It was found that the natural frequency of the partially water-filled two rectangular plates are not proportional to the water level, but depend on mode number of plates.
