  • Purpose of this research is to quantitatively and qualitatively investigate the blow down wastewater produced from Yeosu Industrial Complex. Approximately, 38,325,000 tons/year of wastewater is produced, processed and finally discharged. Six representative companies, namely, A, B, C, D, E, F were chosen for this study. Each company produce over 5,000 tons/day of wastewater. In total, 6,844 tons/day of blow down water is produced from these six companies, put together. However, companies A and C produce about 24% and 37% of blow down water, respectively. It was found that the blow down water had favorable qualities, except for its high conductivity, ranging from 230 to $1,700{\mu}s/cm$. It was evident that, this water can be suitable for reuse, for industrial purposes, if a suitable treatment, for example, RO membrane process is adopted to remove high conductivity.

  • In this study, the current regulation of the water source energy, one of the renewable energy, was analyzed, and the improvement plan for the high efficient data center cooling system was suggested. In the improvement plan, the design and construction guidelines of the water source energy system permit to adopt the cooling and heating system with or without heat pump. In addition, it should also include the system operated in the cooling mode only all year-round. The domestic test standards to consider the water source operating conditions should be developed. Especially, it is highly recommended that the test standards to include the system with forced cooling and free cooling modes related with the enhanced data center cooling system adopting the water source energy.

  • An experimental watershed was selected and sustainable yield was evaluated. The study area(3.89$\textrm{km}^2$) was located in Kyungpook Sangju Yangchon-dong. The visual MODFLOW was verified by comparing the observed and estimated groundwater table. The analysis of the observed and estimated groundwater table from 19 March 2003 to 18 March 2004 showed that the average error was 0.0009m, the error sum of squares 7.245$m^2$, absolute mean error 0.094 m, root mean square error 0.141m, and the model efficiency was 92%. The normal, 10- and 30- year drought frequency years were selected and sustainable yield was evaluated in these periods. Ratios of sustainable yield to the annual infiltration were 14.5% for the normal year(1992), 15.1% for the 10-year(1994), and 15.2% for the 30-year drought frequency year(1982). The results of this study can be used as a basic information for groundwater development and management planning considering regional characteristics.

  • This study investigates the seasonal variation and spatial distribution characteristics of pollutant load, as executing the quality valuation of pollutant load inflowing into Yeong-il Bay from on-land including the Hyeong-san River. Annual total pollutant generating rate from Yeong-il Bay region are 202ton-BOD/day, 620ton-SS/day, 42ton-TN/day, and 16ton-TP/day, respectively. Particularly, the generating ration of the pollutant loads from the Hyeong-san River is greater than that of any other watershed of the Yeong-il Bay, of which BOd is about 78.2%, SS 88.5%, T-N 62.5%, T-P 73.1%, As calculating Tank model with input value of daily precipitation and evaporation of 2001 year in drainage basin of the Hyeong-san River, the estimated result of the annual river discharge effluence from this river is 830106㎥, As a result to estimating annual effluence rate outflowing at the rivers from each drainage basin. annual inflow pollutant rates are 10,633ton-BOD/year, 19,302ton-SS/year, 15,369ton-TN/year, 305ton-TP/year, respectively. The population congestion region of the Pohang-city is a greater source of pollutant loads than the Neang-Chun region with wide drainage area. Therefore, the quantity of TN inflowing into Yeong-il Bay is much more than T-P. The accumulation of pollutant load effluenced from on-land will happen at the inner coast region of Yeon-il Bay. Finally, We would make a prediction that the water quality will take a bad turn.

  • This study was conducted to estimate the distribution characteristics and budget of organic matter in the Lake Hapcheon. In the dry season, the concentration ranges of organic carbons were similar, but in the rainfall season, it showed about double concentrations. Changes of vertical water quality in the lake, there were no big differences with the concentration by the depth. However, it tends to be relatively high on the surface, a little low on the mid-depth and high in the lake bottom. DOC rate at TOC, it was lower than POC rate at inflow and DOC rate was higher than POC rate in the lake and discharging water. R-DOC accounted for more 80% of DOC rate in all investigated areas, therefore we judge that this R-DOC is to increase the organic carbon pollution gradually. As the result of the calculated organic carbon budget in the Lake Hapcheon, the amount of allochthonous, autochthonous and release were 3,552, 3,288, 228 tonC/year, respectively. the amount of discharge, decomposition and sedimentation were 504, 1,344, 5,520 tonC/year, respectively. According to this investigation, the changed amount of organic matter in the Lake Hapcheon recorded -300 tonC/year with the increase of 7,068 tonC/year and the decrease of 7,368 tonC/year.

  • This study analyzed the change of flowout and suspend solid in Andong and Imha basin according to the climate change to develop evaluation index about turbid water occurrence possibility and to support the countermeasures for turbid water management using GIS-based Soil and Water Assessment Tools (SWAT). MIROC3.2 hires model values of A1B climate change scenario that were supplied by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) were applied to future climage change data. Precipitation and temperature were corrected by applying the output value of 20th Century Climate Coupled Model (20C3M) based on past climate data during 1977 and 2006 and downscaled with Change Factor (CF) method. And future climate change scenarios were classified as three periods (2020s, 2050s, 2080s) and the change of flowout and suspended solid according to the climate change were estimated by coupling modeled value with SWAT model. Flowout and suspended solid of Andong and Imha basin in 2020s, 2050s, and 2080s were simulated as increasing compared with standard year (2006). Also, as the result of seasonal change, flowout and suspended solid of Andong and Imha basin in spring, autumn, and winter showed as increasing compared with standard year. And them of Andong and Imha basin in summer were analyzed as decreasing compared with standard year.

  • In coastal and inland bays, where most of Korea's aquaculture is located, massive aquaculture damage occurs every year due to frequent anomalous high water temperatures. The interannual fluctuations of water temperature in July over the past four years (2018-2021) were the second largest since 1990 (after the period of 1994-1997) due to anomalous high temperatures, rainy seasons, and typhoons. Through analysis of heat flux and heat balance in areas of concern for high water temperatures (i.e., Cheonsu Bay, Gamak Bay, Guryongpo), the occurrence of high water temperatures in Cheonsu Bay and Gamak Bay in the summer seasons was confirmed to derive mainly from heat inflow through the sea surface from the air. Based on estimations of the average ocean heat transport rate in July for the four-year period of 2018-2021, Cheonsu Bay and Gamak Bay accounted for 13.5% and 62.3% outflow of the net heat flux, respectively. However, the ocean heat transport rate in Guryongpo Hajeong differed significantly from -174.5% to 132.5% of the net heat flux by year depending on the occurrence of cold water mass.

  • Changes in water quality and algal growth according to the differences in the inflow volume were investigated in the Daecheong Lake from 1998 to 2001. Until year 2000, inflow volume considerably depended on the rainfall throughout the basin. However, the correlation was low since 2001 when water storage in the upstream Yongdam Lake was started. According to inflow volume-TP relationship analyses, significant correlation was found at up- and middle-stream sites, excluding down-stream site of the Daechong Lake. For chlorophyll-a, correlation was found with flow volume at all sites except for Choo-So. In a dry year, although nutrients loads were relatively lower than those in rainy years, there were higher concentrations of chlorophyll-a and massive bloom of Microcystis. Limiting factors for algal growth seems to be not the volume of nutrients load but retention time and physical disturbance of the water body influenced by inflow volume. Thus, in the Daecheong lake, it would be more important to focus on the management of eutrophication in dry years than in rainy ones.
