Low Temperature PECVD for SiOx Thin Film Encapsulation

  • Organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays have promising potential to replace liquid crystal displays (LCDs) due to their advantages of low power consumption, fast response time, broad viewing angle and flexibility. Organic light emitting materials are vulnerable to moisture and oxygen, so inorganic thin films are required for barrier substrates and encapsulations.[1-2]. In this work, the silicon-based inorganic thin films are deposited on plastic substrates by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) at low temperature. It is necessary to deposit thin film at low temperature. Because the heat gives damage to flexible plastic substrates. As one of the transparent diffusion barrier materials, silicon oxides have been investigated. $SiO_x$ have less toxic, so it is one of the more widely examined materials as a diffusion barrier in addition to the dielectric materials in solid-state electronics [3-4]. The $SiO_x$ thin films are deposited by a PECVD process in low temperature below $100^{\circ}C$. Water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) was determined by a calcium resistance test, and the rate less than $10.^{-2}g/m^2{\cdot}day$ was achieved. And then, flexibility of the film was also evaluated.

PU/PDMS 막을 이용한 증기투과공정에 의한 물로부터 휘발성 유기화합물 제거 (Removal of VOCs from Water by Vapor Permeation through PU/PDMS Membrane)

  • 막을 이용한 증기투과는 유기용제 및 휘발성 유기화합물의 제거와 관련되는 환경문제와 결부되어 활발한 연구가 진행되고 있다. 막을 이용한 휘발성 유기화합물 증기의 분리는 막 재질은 높은 온도에도 견딜 수 있어야 하고 증기에 대한 화학적 저항성도 매우 좋아야 한다. 증기투과에 가장 널리 쓰이고 있는 PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane)의 단점을 보완하기 위해 본 연구에서는 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI), PDMS 소프트 세그먼트를 기초로 한 polyurethane-polysiloxanes (PU/PDMS)를 합성하고 그들의 증기투과 특성을 연구하였다 각 Feed에 대한 팽윤도는 톨루엔 > 1,2-이염화에탄 > 헥산 순으로 나타났다. Feed의 농도가 증가할수록 톨루엔과 1,2-이염화에탄의 flux는 점차 증가하는 경향을 나타내었지만, 헥산은 feed의 농도가 증가하여도 flux의 변화가 나타나지 않았다. PU/PDMS 막은 VOCs와 상대적으로 높은 친화도를 가지고 있기 때문에 permeate에서의 농도는 50% 전후로 일정하게 나타났다.

  • 등온흡습곡선측정시의 건제품이 주어진 대상습도에서 평형에 이르는 시간을 단축시키기 위하여 조절기류를 이용하는 장치를 만들고, 이를 이용하여 $25^{\circ}C$에서 말쥐치 건제품의 등온흡습곡선을 측정하였다. 1. 조절기류를 이용함으로써 주어진 수분활성에서보다 높은 수분활성에 이르는 시간을 평균 45 시간으로 단축시킬 수 있었다. 2. 단분자의 수분함양은 고형물 1kg당 0.092kg이었으며, 건조말쥐치의 제품에 대하여 $8.42\%$였다. 착상조건하에서 평행 평판 열교환기의 열 및 물질전달 (Heat and Mass Transfer of Parallel Plate Heat Exchanger under Frosting Condition)

  • In this study, the following factors are investigated from experiments for a vertical parallel plate heat exchanger under the frosting condition ; the growth of frost layer, the characteristics of heat and mass transfer, the change of mass flow rate of the air passing through the heat exchanger, and the pressure drop of the air in the heat exchanger. The amount of heat and mass flux of water vapor transferred from the air stream to the heat exchanger surface is large at the early stage of frosting and then decreases dramatically, and the extent of decreasing rate becomes moderate with time. The frost layer formed near the inlet of the heat exchanger is thicker and denser than that formed near the outlet. It is found that the gradient of the amount of frost along the flow direction increases with time. In the early period of frost formation, the thermal resistance between the air and the cooling plate increases dramatically and then the extent of change decreases with time. Initially the convective thermal resistance is dominant. Then, while the convective thermal resistance decreases with time, the conductive thermal resistance continues to increase with time and finally the conductive thermal resistance becomes dominant.

  • Organic light emitting diode (OLED) is considered as the next generation flat panel displays due to its advantages of low power consumption, fast response time, broad viewing angle and flexibility. For the flexible application, it is essential to develop thin film encapsulation (TFE) to protect oxidation of organic materials from oxidative species such as oxygen and water vapor [1]. In many TFE research, the inorganic film by atomic layer deposition (ALD) process demonstrated a good barrier property. However, extremely low throughput of ALD process is considered as a major weakness for industrial application. Recently, there has been developed a high throughput ALD, called 'spatial ALD' [2]. In spatial ALD, the precursors and reactant gases are supplied continuously in same chamber, but they are separated physically using a purge gas streams to prevent mixing of the precursors and reactant gases. In this study, the $Al_2O_3$ thin film was deposited by spatial ALD process. We characterized various process variables in the spatial ALD such as temperature, scanning speed, and chemical compositions. Water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) was determined by calcium resistance test and less than $10-^3g/m^2{\cdot}day$ was achieved. The samples were analyzed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM).

환경차폐코팅용 이터븀 실리케이트의 제조와 물성평가 (Fabrication and Characterization of Ytterbium Silicates for Environmental Barrier Coating Applications)

  • Environmental barrier coatings(EBCs) are applied to the SiC/SiC ceramic matrix composites(CMCs) in order to protect CMCs from being corroded with water vapor by combustion gas in gas turbine engines. Ytterbium silicates, such as ytterbium monosilicate and ytterbium disilicate, are ones of the candidate materials for EBCs due to their excellent resistance to water vapor corrosion as well as thermal-expansion match with SiC. In this study, ytterbium silicates are fabricated with 2-step solid-state synthesis targeting ytterbium disilicate. After synthesizing ytterbium monosilicate, the mixtures of ytterbium monosilicate and SiO2 are heat-treated and densified by using pressureless sintering or hot pressing with a variety of heating conditions. The phase formation, thermal expansion, and oxidation behavior are examined with fabricated specimens. The final densified bodies are found to be composites between ytterbium monosilicate and ytterbium disilicate with different ratios, which results in 4.43 to 6.72×10-6/K range of coefficients of thermal expansion. The probability of these ytterbium silicates for EBC applications is also discussed.

  • As modern society develops, it becomes very complex and diverse, and interests in the convenience of life and the natural environment are gradually increasing. Products used in our daily life are also changing according to the needs of consumers, and food packaging is one of them. In particular, retort packaging materials have been used for the purpose of long-term preservation of contents, but the appearance of products suitable for recent environmental issues has been somewhat delayed. Therefore, in order to develop eco-friendly and human-friendly products by replacing the metals used in the existing retort packaging materials, the possibility of substitution was examined using cellulose nanofibers, a natural material. As a result, it can be seen that all functions can be replaced according to the existing long-term storage characteristics for retort packaging films. In particular, not only oxygen permeability and water vapor permeability, which are one of the most important factors, but also heat resistance, which is heating durability, is evaluated as applicable to commercialization compared to products using metals currently in use.

대두단백 코팅 종이의 수분저항성 및 물리적 성질 (Effect of Water Resistance and Physical Properties of Soy Protein Isolate coated Liner Board)

  • 대두단백 필름을 코팅한 라이너지의 효과를 알아보기 위하여 대두단백 $2\sim8%$의 농도 범위에서 필름을 제조하였다. 필름 제조시 친수성 소재인 대두단백의 불용화를 위하여 모든 필름은 formaldehyde로 포화된 데시케이터에서 2시간 동안 흡착하여 사용하였다. 필름의 연신강도, 연신율, 투습도 및 수분용해도를 측정한 뒤 최적 농도를 5%로 판단하였다. 필름의 제조적성을 위해 첨가된 가소제 glycerol은 대두단백 대비 40% 농도에서 필름제조에 가장 적합하였다. 앞의 조건을 이용하여 제조된 용액을 라이너지에 코팅하여 그 물성과 수분저항성을 측정하였다. Formaldehyde 처리된 대두단백 코팅 라이너지는 미처리 라이너지에 비하여 연신강도는 15 에서 21 MPa로 증가하였고, 수분용해도와 투습계수는 1.17%와 $2.06ng{\cdot}m/m^2{\cdot}s{\cdot}Pa$로 감소하여 물리적 성질과 수분저항성 모두 증진된 것을 알 수 있었다.

Evaluation of the Wear Resistance of PVD Coatings on Drills by Using a Slurry Jet Impact Test

  • In this paper, we propose a slurry jet (water containing $1\;{\mu}m$ alumina particles) impact test in order to quickly evaluate the wear properties of physical vapor deposited (PVD) coatings on commercial cutting tools. Linear wear was obtained for bothe coating and substrate material, and the penetration through the coating into the substrate was signified by a sharp increase in slope of the wear versus time curve. The PVD coatings deposited on the tools showed the same wear rates as those on reference plate specimens produced by the same coating methods. We conclude that our proposed evaluation technique for coatings is considerably useful as a screening test when evaluating coated tools like twist drills, taps, end mills, gear hobs, etc.

  • The effect of heat conduction resistance on laminar film condensation of the pure saturated vapor in forced flow over a flat plate has been investigated as boundary layer solutions. A efficient numerical methods for water are proposed for its solution. The momentum and energy balance equations are reduced to a nonlinear system of ordinary differential equations with four parameters: the Prandtl number, Pr, Modified Jacob number, $Ja^{\ast}/Pr$, defined by an overall temperature difference, a property ratio $\sqrt{P_l{\mu}_l/P_v{\mu}_v}$ and the conjugate parameter ${\zeta}$. The similarity and simplified solutions obtained reveal the effects of the conjugate parameter.
