The purpose of this study is to investigate dyeing properties and functionality of cotton and silk fabrics dyed with hot-water extract from Juniperus chinensis heartwood. Water-soluble dye of Juniperus chinensis heartwood extracted with distilled water was expressed YR color series. Dye uptake of cotton continued to increase according to the increase of the dye concentration. Its variation trends were shown to be similar to the isothermal absorption curve of the Freundlich. Dye uptake of silk was better than cotton, increased depending on increasing concentration of the dye, dyeing time and temperature. Its variation trends were shown to be similar to the isothermal absorption curve of the Langmuir. As the pH increased, the dye uptake of fabrics reduced and showed increased on red tinge. Colors of the dyed fabrics were various, depending on dye concentration and the mordant type and mordant concentration. Washing fastness, light fastness and perspiration fastness were not good. However, rubbing and dry cleaning fastness showed relatively good grade. Dyed fabrics of ultraviolet-cut ability and deodorant ability were improved. And dyed fabrics showed antimicrobial abilities of 99.9% against Staphylococcus aureus.
From July 1985 to December 1986, 28 variables of phycal-chemical factors, bacteria and heterotrophic activity were investigated 17 times at 3 stations in the estuary of Naktong River and the influences of environmental factors to bacterial population and heterotrophic activity were analyzed through multiple regression. The results of multiple regression were as follows. At station 1, total bacteria and heterotrophic bacteria(Z-25) could explain 57% of the variation of maximum uptake velocity for glucose and 54% of turnover time for glucose was explained by total coliform bacteria and MBOD, Sixty four percent of the variation of Kt+SN was accounted for salinity, MBOD-N and inorganic phosphate. Turnover rate for acetate was also accounted for the change of MBOD-P by 56%. At station 2 maximum uptake velocity for glucose depends on MBOD-N by 81%; turnover time on bacteria by 50%; Kt+Sn on avilable nutrient by 61%. More than 50% of maximum uptake velocity and turnover time for glucose were influenced by bacteria and that of Kt+Sn by the change of nutrient in the surface water of station 3. In the bottom water of station 3, the change of maximumuptake velocity, turnover time and Kt+Sn for glucose was controlled by total bacteria and available nutrient, bacteria, the change of nutrient salts respectively. On the whole, more than 50% of maximum uptake velocity and turnover time for glucose could be due to the change in the number of bacetria and the value of Kt+Sn was affected by the change of nutrient salts. Turnover rate for acetate was controlled by available phosphate at station 1 and by bacteria at station 2 and 3, which showed a distinct difference between the environmental factors which govern the rate of glucose and acetate uptake in the Naktong esturine ecosystem. And bacterial communities were controlled by available nutrients at station 1, by nutrient salts and salinity at station 2 and in the surface water of station 3 and by salinity in the bottom water of station 3.
Small intestinal submucosa (SIS) is consisted with collagen and glycosaminoglycan as well as some growth factors which can stimulate cell activity. Recently, it has been recognized that SIS has been successfully examined in the bio-medical application as biomaterials without xenograft immune-rejection response. We prepared native SIS sheets and acid treated SIS sheets by acetic acid with 1 or 5-layered sheets, respectively. The water uptake ability of native and acid treated SIS sheets was examined to evaluate the possibility as wound dressings. Morphologies of SIS sheets were characterized by SEM and the effects of various buffer solutions and different pH solutions on the water uptake ability were observed for 16 days. We observed that the acid treated SIS sheets had higher water uptake ability than native SIS sheets. Also, the water uptake ability of these was slightly higher in various buffers than distilled water. In conclusion, this study suggests that native and acid treated SIS sheets could be useful for the applications of wound dressing and biodegradable injectable materials.
The floating island was investigated in order to make a purification of lake water quality with the uptake of nutrients, the prevention of algae growth and the supply of habitat for aquatic plants. Although the concentrations of organics and nutrients inside facility were shown higher than outside, the quantitative analysis was not attainable. Nitrogen uptakes by Cattail, Phragmites japonica, Reed and Wild rice were shown 48.2, 98.0, 111.1 and $72.0g/m^2{\cdot}year$, respectively, and in the case of phosphorus they were 3.2, 8.3, 6.1 and $4.6g/m^2{\cdot}year$, respectively. Considering total floating areas of $2,560m^2$, the nitrogen uptake is totally estimated to $210.7kg/m^2{\cdot}year$ and $14.2kg/m^2{\cdot}year$ for the phosphorus uptake. In order to promote the spread of floating island, the selection of aquatic plants, the control of growth rate properly and the method of quantitative analysis for the purification of water quality and the application to the stream water should be thoroughly surveyed from all angles prior to the application.
This experiment was carried out to elucidate the effects of silicate and different application forms of N on the uptake of water and N by rice plants. Three rice cultivars, Ilpum, Anda and M202, were grown under the hydroponics in a phytotron. One-hundred ppm silica was applied for silicate treatment. For nitrogen application forms were 100% $NH_4$ and $NH_4+NO_3$ in 2:1 ratio were applied. Silica treatment, compared to silica free, was very effective on the nitrogen uptake and dry weight increase of rice plants. Although silica application demonstrated no significant effect on the amount of water uptake, it improved increased water and nitrogen use efficiency. Therefore, sufficient application of silicate in paddy field will be useful for the growth of rice plants and water saving.
To examine the availability of onggi (earthenware) as a floral vase, we compared the vase life of cut gerberas (Gerbera jamesonii) with generally used vases made of glass and porcelain. After holding cut gerbera 'Honeymoon' and 'Golden Time' in vases made of glass, porcelain, and onggi containing holding solution (tap water or preservative solution), vase life, fresh weight, and water uptake of cut flowers, and total number of microbes in holding solution were collected. In onggi vase, vase life of both the cultivars was longer than the other vases and floral preservative prolonged vase life compared with tap water. Cut gerberas applied with preservative solution in onggi vase maintained their ornamental value for more than 14 days. Cumulative water uptake by cut gerberas was greatest in onggi vase, where 'Honeymoon' and 'Golden Time' absorbed water by 19.2 and 15.8 mL, respectively, for 10 days. Fresh weight of cut flowers in onggi vase was greater than those of the others, and the preservative solution delayed the reduction of fresh weight compared with tap water. Especially, onggi vase with preservative solution maintained 89% of the initial fresh weight at the 8th day of the treatments due to smooth water uptake with comparison with 71% in porcelain. Total number of microbes in the holding solution was smallest in onggi vase. At the 8th day, microbes number in onggi vase was 435 cfu/mL, that was 20-30% level of those of glass and porcelain vases. In conclusion, onggi vase inhibited microbial proliferation in holding solution, maintained water uptake by cut flower, and delayed bending of flower stalks due to vascular blockage, and then prolonged vase life in gerbera. Therefore, onggi with numerous micropores will be a good material for flower vase and preservative solution can improve its function.

Several copolyimides have been synthesized with different combinations of comonomers in order to study the relationship between conductivity and water insolubility. m-Phenylenediamine (m-PDA), an angled comonomer, was introduced into the polymer backbone to increase water absorption, and resulted in higher proton conductivity. 2,2-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzidine (TFMB) was used as the comonomer to promote water insolubility. There is a good correlation between the water uptake and conductivity of the polyimides. The copolyimides that had high water uptake also generated high proton conductivity. Those polyimides had good mechanical properties. The copolyimides that have 27 mol% of TFMB and 9 mol% of m-PDA have reasonable conductivities and are insoluble in water at 90$^{\circ}C$, even though they have lower conductivities than those of the homopolymer.
Water-uptake through roots, is an essential process of the water flow in plants. Its visualization is very useful for understanding sap flow dynamics at whole plant level. In this study, the tips of Arabidopsis' root hairs were excised and exposed to repeated dehydration and rehydration processes. The water-refilling through individual xylem vessels was visualized using the synchrotron X-ray micro-imaging technique. The high temporal resolution ($2\;{\mu}m$) and beam intensity of the X-ray source allowed to acquisition of consecutive X-ray images of the water-refilling process up to 10 frames/sec. Various flow patterns were observed and the ascending speed of the water-air interfaces was analyzed. The relation between the water-rising height and ascending speed was also analyzed. The present results would provide better alternative for investigating sap flows in roots.
To clarify the mode of uptake of butachlor (2-chloro-2', 6'-diethyl-N-(butoxymethyl) acetanilide) by rice seedlings, its phytotoxic action to growth and physiological activities, studies were conducted with rice seedlings, at the 6th or 7th leaf-stage, which were treated with nutrient solution containing butachlor 0, 1.8, 3.6, 7.2, 10.8 or 14.4 ppm for 1, 2 or 4 days, in other case, the solutions were thereafter renewed with the untreated nutrient solution for further growth. Uptake of butachlor by rice seedlings increased linearly with increase of its concentration and duration of uptake. Butachlor inhibited root growth more than shoot growth, furthermore, the inhibitory effect on the shoot growth was greater in height than in weight or leafing rate. After 4 day-treatment, the rates of shoot growth in weight were delayed for 4 days. Butachlor inhibited water uptake rapidly and linearly with increase of its external concentration. The reduced uptake of water was followed by slow increase in the stomatal resistance of leaves. Upon completion of butachlor treatment, rate of water uptake was recovered rapidly, but the stomatal resistance with lag in time. Butachlor did not affect the uptake of cation such as ammonium, potassium and calcium, but inhibited substantially uptake of nitrate in proportion to its concentration. Especially, butachlor did not affect synthesis and degradation of nitrate reductase. In addition, butachlor has shown much greater binding to the lipidic substances from rice roots than the proteinous material. The primary mechanism of phytotoxic action of butachlor does not seem to be its effect on the protein synthesis, but great affinity to membranes. The inhibition of water uptake, and its subsequent closure of stomates is thought very important for reduced growth under mild phytotoxicity.
This study was investigated about influence of different cold water irrigation on the nutrient uptake of leaf blade, rachis branches and chaff. Longer duration of cold water irrigation increased total nitrogen content in leaf blade, branches and chaff but decreased the content of phosphate, potassium and silicate. The highest content of total nitrogen and phosphate showed at heading stage, that of potassium in leafblades and branches at heading but in chaff at maturing stage, and that of silicate at maturing stage. Inorganic element content in branches was similar with that in chaff in general. The excessive uptake of nitrogen by cold water irrigation caused decrease in the uptake phosphate, potassium and silicate showing clear nutrient disorder in the blades and chaff. High total nitrogen and low silicate in rice plants seemed to lead to degeneration of branches and spikelets, and to spikelet sterility. Degeneration and sterility appeared to be closely related to nutrient status of branches.
