  • Stormwater pollution is a major problem in urban areas. Pollutants like heavy metals and harmful chemicals in the runoff can endanger soil and ground water, when they are not sufficiently removed doting infiltration. Strength and infiltration capacity of porous concrete are the major problems that must be considered if permeable pavement system are demanded to be used in a drive way application. In this study, a series of compacted porous concrete mixtures and the system of pavement ate tested for the physical characteristics like compressive strength, flexural strength, unit weight, porosity, water permeability, and the purification capacity of contaminated water. The test results obtained indicate that the strength and infiltration capacity of porous concrete are strongly related to its matrix proportion and compaction energy and providing adequate filter layers underneath pavement surface course is one of the most important design considerations of permeable pavement system for pollution retention purpose.

  • Field observation and numerical experiments were conducted to understand the impact of water retention pavement on the surface heat budget and on the regional circulation. The numerical model applied in this study is the atmospheric dynamic model Local Circulation Model (LCM) with two dimensional grid system, and a field observation was carried out under the clear sky and calm conditions of the weather on 19 July 2007. In the field observation, the maximum value of surface temperature on pavement covered with water retention material reached the $41.2^{\circ}C$ at 1430 LST and the values was lower for $16.1^{\circ}C$ than that of asphalt without the material. The Case BET03 assumed to be 0.3 for the surface evaporation efficiency was in good agreement with the observation and its sensible and latent heat fluxes were numerically estimated to be 229 and 227 $W/m^2$, respectively. Results of the numerical experiments demonstrated that the water retention pavement tends to induce the increase of latent heat flux associated with the lower surface temperature and mixing height during the daytime. Discontinuity of latent heat caused by the water retention pavement also tends to promote the development of mesoscale circulation called as land-land breeze or country breeze.

  • As urbanization and impermeable areas have increased, stormwater and non-point pollutants entering the stream have increased. Additionally, in the case of the old town comprising a combined sewer pipe system, there is a problem of stream water pollution caused by the combined sewer overflow. To resolve this problem, many cities globally are pursuing an environmentally friendly low impact development strategy that can infiltrate, evaporate, and store rainwater. This study analyzed the expected effects and efficiency when the LID facility was installed as a measure to improve hydrologic cycle and water quality in the Oncheon stream in Busan. The EPA-SWMM, previously calibrated for hydrological and water quality parameters, was used, and standard parameters of the LID facilities supported by the EPA-SWMM were set. Benchmarking the green infrastructure plan in New York City, USA, has created various installation scenarios for the LID facilities in the Oncheon stream drainage area. The installation and maintenance cost of the LID facility for scenarios were estimated, and the effect of each LID facility was analyzed through a long-term EPA-SWMM simulation. Among the applied LID facilities, the infiltration trench showed the best effect, and the bio-retention cell and permeable pavement system followed. Conversely, in terms of cost-efficiency, the permeable pavement systems showed the best efficiency, followed by the infiltration trenches and bio-retention cells.

  • The objective of this study is to develop a proper absorbent-pervious pavement. By using single graded aggregates and SAP, permeability and water absorbability of absorbent-pervious pavement are improved, and also temperature reducing effect is found out. And several tests such as compressive and flexural strength tests, and permeability/water absorption tests of absorbent-pervious pavement are carried out to verify these kind of effects. The compressive and flexural strengths are increased according to decrease of single graded aggregate size, and increase of SAP content. And the volume of water retention and absorbability are increased according to the increase of SAP content and these are also increased in small size of single graded aggregate. And about $20^{\circ}C$ of difference is observed in surface temperature between normal asphalt pavement and absorbent-pervious pavement.

  • This study was undertaken to analyze the effects of pavement thermal properties and water retention characteristics on the surface temperature of the gray permeable cement concrete pavement during the summer. Following is a summary of major results. 1) The hourly surface temperature of pavement could be well predicted with a heat transfer model program that incorporated the input data of major meteorological variables including solar radiation, atmospheric temperature, dew point, wind velocity, cloudiness and the evaporation rate of the pavements predicted by the time domain reflectometry (TDR) method. 2) When the albedo was changed to 0.5 from an arbitrary starting condition of 0.3, holding other variables constant, the peak surface temperature of the pavement dropped by 11.5%. When heat capacity was changed to $2.5\;kJm^{-3}K^{-1}\;from\;1.5\;kJm^{-3}K^{-1}$, surface temperature dropped by 8.0%. When daily evaporation was changed to 1 mm from 2 mm, temperature dropped by 5.7%. When heat conductivity was changed to $2.5\;Wm^{-1}K^{-1}\;from\;1.5\;Wm^{-1}K^{-1}$, the peak surface temperature of the pavement fell by 1.2%. The peak pavement surface temperature under the arbitrary basic condition was $24.46^{\circ}C$ (12 a.m.). 3) It accordingly became evident that the pavement surface temperature can be most effectively lowered by using materials with a high albedo, a high heat capacity or a high evaporation at the pavement surface. The glare situation, however, is intensified by raising of the albedo, moreover if reflected light is absorbed into surrounding physical masses, it is changed into heat. It accordingly became evident that raising the heat capacity and the evaporative capacity may be the moot acceptable measures to improve the thermal characteristics of the pavement. 4) The sensitivity of the surface temperature to major meteorological variables was as follows. When the daily average temperature changed to $0^{\circ}C\;from\;15^{\circ}C$, holding all other variables constant, the peak surface temperature of the pavement decreased by 56.1 %. When the global solar radiation changed to $200\;Wm^{-2}\;from\;600\;Wm^{-2}$, the temperature of the pavement decreased by 23.4%. When the wind velocity changed to $8\;ms^{-1}\;from\;4\;ms^{-1}$, the temperature decreased by 1.4%. When the cloudiness level changed to 1.0 from 0.5, the peak surface temperature decreased by 0.7%. The peak pavement surface temperature under the arbitrary basic conditions was $24.46^{\circ}C$ (12 a.m.)

  • Purpose: Retention and infiltration of small and frequently-occurring rainfall by LID facilities account for a large proportion of the annual precipitation volume. Based on 4 standard facilities such as Porous Pavement, Infiltration Trench, Cylindrical Infiltration Well, Rectangular Infiltration Well by Seoul Metropolitan Handbook of the Prior Consultation for LID. The total retention volume of each facility was calculated according to the type and size. The Purpose of this study is to find out the quantitative relationship between Percentile Rainfall Event and Design Volume of Infiltration Facilities. Methode: For the estimation of Percentile Rainfall Event, Daily Precipitation of Seoul from 2005 to 2014 was sorted ascending and the distribution of percentile was estimated by PERCENTILE spreadsheet function. The managed Rainfall Depth and Percentile of each facility was calculated at the several sizes. In response to the rainwater charge volume of 5.5mm/hr by the Category "Private large site", the 3 types of facilities were planned for example. The calculated Rainfall Depth and Percentile were 54.4mm and 90% by the use of developed Calculation-Module based on the Spreadsheet program. Result: With this Module the existing Designed Infiltration volume which was introduced from Japan was simply converted to the Percentile-Rainfall-Event used in USA.

  • In 2014, the city of Seoul revised the ordinance regarding water-cycle restoration in the Seoul Metropolitan areas by incorporating the 'Low Impact Development (LID)' policy. The new ordinance plan will utilize 630 mm or almost 45 to 50% of annual rainfall until 2050 by means of providing a rainwater management system consisting of infiltration, retention and vegetation. The LID is believed to be the key to achieving the target requirements, specifically in development projects. This research was performed to evaluate the stormwater runoff and pollutant reduction performance of three different LID facilities (water circulation facilities) including an infiltration inlet, bioretention swale, and permeable pavement constructed in Seoul City. Results show that among the water circulation facilities, the permeable pavement achieved the highest runoff reduction as it was able to entirely capture and infiltrate the runoff to the ground. However, in order to attain a long-term performance it is necessary to manage the accumulated sediment and trapped pollutants in the landscape areas through other water circulation techniques such as through soil erosion control. In terms of pollutant reduction capability, the infiltration inlet performed well since it was applied in highly polluted areas. The bioretention facility integrating the physico-chemical and biological mechanisms of soil, microorganisms and plants were able to also achieve a high runoff and pollutant reduction. The water circulation facilities provided not only benefits for water circulation but also various other benefits such as pollutant reduction, ecological restoration, and aesthetic functions.

  • PURPOSES : This study is to suggest time to spray curing compound, the amount of curing compound, and the number of times to spray curing compound based on indoor tests. METHODS : Based on the literature review, two methods are used in this study, One is test for water retention of concrete curing material and the other is test for abrasion resistance of concrete surfaces by the rotating-cutter method. Through those methods, curing compound was evaluated. RESULTS : The result of the laboratory experiment for time to spray curing compound indicates that 30 minutes after placing concrete is optimal. For the amount of curing compound, $0.5{\ell}/m^2$ is the minimum quantity for both concretes. Through test of the number of times to spray curing compound, method to spray the whole amount of curing compound in twice is more efficient than it to spray the whole amount at a time. Also, method of separately 30-50 minutes spray is better than method of separately 10-30 minutes spray. CONCLUSIONS : From the testing results, it can be proposed that optimum time to curing compound is $30{\pm}15$ minutes, $0.5{\ell}/m^2$ is efficient for spraying the whole amount of curing compound at a time, and $0.4{\ell}/m^2$ is the best for spraying the whole amount of curing compound in twice, which sprays it in 20 minutes after 30 minutes from placing concrete.

  • Due to rapidly increased urbanization, impervious area has been extended and concerns about urban flooding has been increased as well. A lot of effort has been made to restore the urban water circulation. Low Impact Development (LID) technology that consist of retention, infiltration, and evapotranspiration has begun to attract attention to simulate the hydrologic phenomenon before and after development. Many researches on the technique is being actively conducted. In this study, the effect on reducing runoff in urban catchment was analyzed and evaluated by applying LID techniques using SWMM and six scenarios. A SWMM-LID model was built for the Gasan 1 rainwater pumping station basin, and Green Roof and Permeable Pavement were selected as LID techniques to be applied. As a result, the reduction effect of the permeable pavement was larger than green roof. In the future, the results could be used to design a LID facility using the characteristics of the watershed, and other urban water resource factors such as river and groundwater levels that affect each other should be considered, so that the entire system can be considered.
