The purpose of this study is to estimate overall reliability and applicability of the watershed modeling for systematic management of point and non-point sources via water quality analysis and prediction of runoff discharge within watershed. Recently, runoff characteristics and pollutant characteristics have been changing in watershed by anomaly climate and urbanization. In this study, the effects of watershed scale were analyzed in runoff and water quality modeling using HSPF. In case of correlation coefficient, its range was from 0.936 to 0.984 in case A(divided - 2 small watersheds). On the other hand, its range was form 0.840 to 0.899 in case B(united - 1 watershed). In case of Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient, its range was from 0.718 to 0.966 in case A. On the other hand, its range was from 0.441 to 0.683 in case B. As a result, it was judged that case A was more accurate than case B. Therefore, runoff and water quality modeling in minimum watershed scale that was provided data for calibration and verification was judged to be favorable in accuracy. If optimal watershed dividing and parameter optimization using PEST in HSPF with more reliable measured data are carried out, more accurate runoff and water quality modeling will be performed.
Various input data required for water quality modeling have considerable impacts on modeling results and relevant analysis due to the absence of data standardization and lack of data accuracy. With this in mind, this study mainly focused on the designing Korean Reach File for more effective water quality modeling through the supply of database composed with accurate hydraulic and hydrologic data. The Korean Reach File is the hydraulic database with the locational information of individual reaches, and each reach represents the stream reach of homogeneous hydraulic characteristics. In detail, it has reach code designating each stream reach, and topological information including catalog unit, segment, marker and index. It was also designed considering linkage of existing codes such as stream name and stream code. The devised reach code was implemented to Kyungan River at the City of Gwangju of Kyunggi Province and the results showed that the reach code could effectively support the input database integrating basic numerous data required for water quality modeling based on a criterion as well as easier linkage and utilization with existing database. In addition, more systematic water quality management was enabled through the linkage of existing data such as treatment facilities, pollutant data, and management institutes using the reach codes defined for each stream section. In the future, more efforts need to be made to adopt the reach code as the national standard data thereby enabling utilization of numerous relevant database through the assigning of reach code to individual stream reaches nationwide.

The objective of this paper was to quantitatively analyze the effect of concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFO) NPS pollution on a small watershed water quality. Monitoring was conducted from March to October, 2013. Monthly flow rate and selected water quality at each monitoring site were measured during dry days. Rainy day monitoring also was conducted. Modeling was conducted to evaluate the effect of CAFO NPS pollution on the water quality at the watershed outlet. The highest and mean concentration of selected water quality indices during rainy days were higher than those in dry days in general. The highest TN concentration measured at the CAFP pollution discharge point was 237.831 mg/L. The results revealed that the CAFO NPS pollution sources could be equally blamed for the water quality degradation of the stream. However, the effect of the NPS pollution from CAFOs seemed not to be very influential to the watershed water quality at the outlet. SWAT modeling revealed that the TN load was reduced by 18.95 %, 23.39 % and 30.53 % at the watershed outlet if the TN load at the CAFO NPS pollution discharge point reduced by 20 %, 40 % and 60 %, respectively. It was thought that the natural attenuation processes played an important role. The modeling was based only on the assumption of the load reduction and not verified by the monitored data. Therefore, it was suggested that a long term monitoring studies for the evaluation of the impact of CAFO NPS pollution on the watershed water quality be conducted.
Multi-dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality models are widely used to simulate the physical and biogeochemical processes in the surface water systems such as reservoirs and estuaries. Most of the models have adopted the Eulerian grid modeling framework, mainly because it can reasonably simulate physical dynamics and chemical species concentrations throughout the entire model domain. Determining the optimum grid cell size is important when using the Eulerian grid-based three-dimensional water quality models because the characteristics of species are assumed uniform in each of the grid cells and chemical species are represented by concentration (mass per volume). The objective of this study was to examine the effect of grid-size of a three dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality model (EFDC) on hydrodynamics and mass transport in the Saemangeum Reservoir. Three grid resolutions, respectively representing coarse (CG), medium (MG), and fine (FG) grid cell sizes, were used for a sensitivity analysis. The simulation results of numerical tracer showed that the grid resolution affects on the flow path, mass transport, and mixing zone of upstream inflow, and results in a bias of temporal and spatial distribution of the tracer. With the CG, in particular, the model overestimates diffusion in the mixing zone, and fails to identify the gradient of concentrations between the inflow and the ambient water.

Aim of this research was to investigate the effects of Digital Elevation Model (DEM) for sensitivity analysis with two types of DEMs: 1 to 24,000 and 1 to 250,000 DEM. Another emphasis was given to the development of methodology for processing DEMs to create ArcGIS Pro and GRASS layers. This was done while developing water quality system modeling using DEMs which were used to model hydrological processes and SWAT model. Sensitivity analysis with DEMs resulted in different runoff volumes in the model simulation. Runoff volume was higher for the 1:24,000 DEM than 1:250,000 DEM, probably due to the finer resolution and slope which increased the estimated runoff from the watershed. Certainly the DEMs were factors in precision of the simulations and it was obvious during sensitivity analysis that DEMs had significant effect on runoff volumes. We suggest, however, that additional comparative research could be conducted involving more parameters such as soil and hydrologic parameters to provide insight into the overall physical system which the SWAT model represents.
In cases of water pollution accidents, accurate prediction for arrival time and concentration of contaminants in a river is essential to take proper measures and minimize their impact on downstream water intake facilities. It is critical to fully understand the behavior characteristics of contaminants on river surface, especially in case of oil spill accidents. Therefore, in this study, the effects of main parameters of advection and diffusion of contaminants were analyzed and validated by comparing the results of Lagrangian particle tracking (LPT) simulation of Environmental Fluid Dynamic Code (EFDC) model with those of Global Position System (GPS)-equipped drifter experiment. Prevention scenario modeling was accomplished by taking cases of movable weir operation into account. The simulated water level and flow velocity fluctuations agreed well with observations. There was no significant difference in the speed of surface particle movement between 5 and 10 layer modeling. Therefore, 5 layer modeling could be chosen to reduce computational time. It was found that full three dimensional modeling simulated wind effects on surface particle movements more sensitively than depth-averaged two dimensional modeling. The diffusion range of particles was linearly proportional to horizontal diffusivity by sensitivity analysis. Horizontal diffusivity estimated from the results of GPS-equipped drifter experiment was 0.096 m2/sec, which was considered to be valid for applying the LPT module in this area. Finally, the scenario analysis results showed that particle movements could be stagnant when discharge from the upstream weir was reduced, implying the possibility of securing time for mitigation actions such as oil boom installation and wiping oil contaminants. The outcomes of this study can help improve the prediction accuracy of particle tracking simulation to establish the most suitable mitigation plan considering the combination of movable weir operation.
Water modeling experiments and computer simulation for the predictions of defects of die castings are very important to produce high quality castings with less cost. The relation between the variable air vent system and the characteristics of the fluid flow in the die cavity is studied by using water modeling tests, which give ideas on reasonable designing of die cavity, vent arrangement and gating system. In order to test the water modeling, injection is done by using water containing NaCl. Flow behaviors in cavities are visualized by high speed camera and video tape recorder, and local filling time is measured with electrode sensors. Special attention is paid to the configuration of die cavity. Simulated results by computer are examined and compared with the results of water modeling experiments. There are close correlations between the simulated results and water modeling ones.

Government introduces a Total Maximum Daily Loads(TMDL) which can be implemented for total pollutant amounts in 2004. Normally, the local governments have been calculated the amounts of pollutant discharge of each watershed using a water quality model. However, among the input data to use the water quality model, creating a schematic diagram of the stream or the modeling usually requires considerable amount of time and efforts due to the manual work. Therefore, this study tried to develop an algorithm which automates the creation of a schematic diagram for water quality modeling using the Korean Reach File capable of river network analysis. Further, this study creates a schematic diagram with the shape of a stream utilizing GIS capabilities. The diagram can be easily analyzed with overlapping various spatial information such as pollution sources and discharge points. This study mainly has automated element segmentation algorithm to divide streamflows into equal distance using line graphic data of Koran Reach File. Also, automated attribute input algorithm has also been developed to enable to insert element order and type into elements using point graphic data of Korean Reach File. For the verification of the developed algorithm, the algorithm was applied to kyungan stream basin to see the acceptable results. To conclude, it was possible to automate generating of schematic diagram of water quality model and it is expected to be able to save time and cost required for the water modeling. In future study, it is necessary to develop an automatic creation system of various types of input data for water quality modeling and this will lead to relatively easier and simple water quality modeling.

The goal of this research is the establishment of a connection of an existing water quality model to GIS. The water quality model investigated was the Water Quality Analysis Simulation Program (WASP5), while the actual linkage was performed using object-oriented programming. The runoff and the non-point source loadings into the Channel were determined using a grid-based model developed in GIS. Afterwards, scripts were written in the ArcView programming language, Avenue, in order for ArcView to perform the following tasks : 1) write the input file informations, 2) format the input information into the proper WASP5 file, 3) execute the WASP5 subprogram for modeling.

Ara Canal is the first artificial canal in Korea that connects the Han River and the Yellow Sea. Due to mixture of waters with different salinity and water quality, complicated hydrodynamic and water quality distributions are expected to occur inside the canal. An integrated hydrodynamic and water quality modeling system was developed using the 3 dimensional hydrodynamic model, EFDC (Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code) and the water quality model WASP (Water Quality Analysis and Simulation Program). According to the modeling results, BOD, TN, TP and Chl-a concentrations inside the canal were lower at the West Gate side than the Han River side since influent concentrations of the West Gate side are significantly lower. Chemical stratification due to salinity difference were more evident at the West Gate side as vertical salinity difference were more pronounced in this area. On the other hand, Chl-a concentrations showed more pronounced vertical distribution at the Han River side as Chl-a concentrations were higher in this area. It was notable that Dissolved Oxygen concentrations can be lower than 2 mg/L occasionally in the middle part of the canal. While major factor affecting DO concentrations in the canal are inflows via both gates, the other important factor was found to be BOD decay in the canal due to extended hydraulic residence time. This study can be used to predict hydrodynamic conditions and water quality in the canal during the year and thus can be helpful in the development of gate operation method of the canal.
