In this work, we introduce a newly constructed arc-jet device of 150 kW input power. The design of this device is a Huels type with a narrow downstream electrode. General features of this device are first described. From the measured values of electrical power input, heat discharged into cooling water, gas flow rate, and settling chamber pressure, average enthalpy was determined using the heat balance and sonic throat methods. Using the settling chamber pressure and average enthalpy values, the flow properties in the nozzle and the heat transfer rate to the stagnation point of a blunt body are calculated accounting for thermochemical nonequilibrium. The envelope of enthalpy, pressure, degree of dissociation, and heat transfer rate are presented. Stagnation temperature is predicted to be between 4630 to 6050 $^{\circ}K$, and the stagnation point heat transfer rate is predicted to be between 175 and 318 W/$cm^{2}$ for a blunt body of 3 mm nose radius. Degree of dissociation in the stagnation region of the blunt body exceeds 30%.
Halogen exchanges between benzyl chloride and chloride ion have been studied in 90% ethanol-water mixture, and activation parameters in the exchange reaction have been determined; ${\Delta}H^{\neq}$ = 18. 50 Kcal and ${\Delta}S^{\neq}$ = -22. 09 e. u. Results indicated that the reaction proceeded via a typical bimolecular mechanism. The importance of nucleophilic ability of attacking anion in $S_N2$ process has been stressed giving some experimental evidence. The order of reactivity of halides in the exchange reaction is better explained with the Swain's nucleophilic parameter than with the bond dissociation energies.

In this study, the effect of void formation resulting from gas hydrate dissociation or loss of some particles within soil structure on the strength of soil is examined. Beag-ma river sands with uniform gradation were used to simulate a gas hydrate bearing or washable soil structure. Empty capsules for medicine are used to mimic large voids, which are bigger than soil particle. Beag-ma river sand was miced with 8% cement ratio and 14% water content and compacted into a shear box. The number and direction embedded into a specimen. After 4 hours curing, a series of direct shear test is performed on the capsule embedded cemented sands. Shear strength of cemented sands with capsules depends on the volume and direction. The volume and direction formed by voids are most important factors in strength. A shear strength of a specimen with large voids decreases up to 39% of a specimen without void. The results of this study can be used to predict the strength degradation of gas hydrate bearing sediments after dissociation and loss of fine particles within soil structure.
Gas hydrates are solid solutions when water molecules are linked through hydrogen bonding and create host lattice cavities that can enclose many kinds of guest(gas) molecules. There are plenty of methane(gas) hydrate in the earth and distributed widely at offshore and permafrost. Several schemes, to produce methane hydrates, have been studied. In this study, depressurization method has been utilized for the numerical model due to it's simplicity and effectiveness. IMPES method has been used for numerical analysis to get the saturation and velocity profile of each phase and pressure profile, velocity of dissociation front progress and the quantity of produced gas. The values calculated for the sample length of 10m, show that methane hydrates has been dissolved completely in approximately 223 minutes and the velocity of dissociation front progress is 3.95㎝ per minute. The volume ratio of the produced gas in the porous media is found to be about 50%. Analysing the saturation profile and the velocity profile from the numerical results, the permeability of each phase in porous media is considered to be the most important factor in the two phase flow propagation. Consequently, permeability strongly influences the productivity of gas in porous media for methane hydrates.
Methane hydrate is ice-like solid compound consisting of mainly methane and water, and is stable under specific low temperature and high pressure conditions (HSZ : methane hydrate stability zone) that occurs in permafrost regions and in the ocean floor sediments. Geophysical survey was implemented in the southern area of the East Sea, and the HSZ of the study area is determined by the temperature, pressure and local heat flow obtained from the survey and well data. In the study area, methane hydrates could exist in the sediments below the water depths of about $300{\cal}m$, and the base of HSZ is about 600m beneath the seafloor. The acoustically blanking zones in the sediment and phenomena of gas seepage were detected from the seismic section. These sediments have the sufficient physical condition for the formation of methane hydrate. The temperature and pressure conditions were experimentally measured for the dissociation of methane and propane hydrates in Pure water. Equilibrium conditions of methane and propane hydrates were obtained in the pressure range up to 19050Kpa and 401.3Kpa. Under same temperature condition, propane hydrate was dissociated at lower pressure than that of methane hydrate.

Silicon oxide films with high hardness and water repellency were prepared by microwave plasma-enhanced CVD using four kind of organosilicon compound-fluoro-alkyl silane mixtures as source gases. An argon gas was used as a carrier gas for fluoro-alkyl silane. The substrate temperatures during deposition were controlled by resistant heating at a constant value between 50 and $300^{\circ}C$. The hardness of the films increased, but the deposition rate and the contact angle for a water drop decreased with increasing substrate temperature. The number of methoxy groups also affected the water repellency and hardness. The deposited films became more inorganic with increasing substrate temperature because of the thermal dissociation of reactants.
The purpose of this study was two-fold. First was to evaluate whether the molecular sieving model was appropriate for ionic dissociation experiment. Second was to compare the dissociation of calcium and hydroxyl ions from five types of calcium hydroxide pastes (Pure calcium hydroxide paste, DT temporary $dressing^{\circledR},{\;}Metapaste^{\circledR},{\;}Chidopex^{\circledR},{\;}Metapex^{\circledR}$) in three vehicles (aqueous, viscous and oily) and the antibacterial effect. Each calcium hydroxide pastes was placed into 0.65ml tube with cap and then 15% polyacrylamide gel was placed onto calcium hydroxide pastes. After the gel was hardened, the tubes were filled with tridistilled water (pH 7.14) and closed with cap. The tubes were stored in $37^{\circ}C$ 100% incubator The pH reading and the concentration of calcium ions were taken at 1, 4, 7. 10, and 14 days. The brain heart infusion agar plates with S. mutans and A. actinomycetemcomitans were used far antibacterial activity test. Middle of agar plate was filled with the calcium hydroxide pastes. The plates were incubated at $37^{\circ}C$ and observations were made to detect the zones of inhibition. These data were evaluated statistically by use of the analysis of variance and duncan test. The results were as follows. 1. In fresh mixing state, the pH of five types of calcium hydroxide pastes were measured between 12.5 and 12.8. 2. The pH was increased in all five types of calcium hydroxide pastes compared with control group. In 14 days, Pure calcium hydroxide paste (11.45) and DT temporary $dressing^{\circledR}$ (11.33) showed highest pH, followed by $Metapaste^{\circledR}$ (9.49), $Chidopex^{\circledR}$ (8.37) and $Metapex^{\circledR}$ (7.59) 3. Calcium was higher in all five types of calcium hydroxide pastes compared with control group. In 14 days, Pure calcium hydroxide paste (137.29 mg%) and DT temporary $dressing^{\circledR}$ (124.6 mg%) showed highest value, followed by $Metapaste^{\circledR}$ (116.74 mg%), $Chidopex^{\circledR}$ (111.84 mg%) and $Metapex^{\circledR}$ (60.22 mg%). 4. The zones of bacterial inhibition were seen around all five types of calcium hydroxide pastes. $Chidopex^{\circledR}{\;}and{\;}Metapex^{\circledR}$ groups which include iodoform were observed significantly larger zone of inhibition in A. actinomycetemcomitans compared with the other calcium hydroxide groups (p<0.05) However, $Metapex^{\circledR}$ showed the least antibacterial effect on S. mutans compared with other groups (p<0.05). The molecular sieving model was found to be acceptable in dissociation experiment of hydroxyl and calcium ions when compared with the previous tooth model study. But this model was not appropriate for the antibacterial test.
Methane gas hydrate which is considered energy source for the next generation has an urgent need to develop reliable numerical simulator for coupled THM phenomena in the porous media, to minimize problems arising during the production and optimize production procedures. International collaborations to improve previous numerical codes are in progress, but they still have mismatch in the predicted value and unstable convergence. In this paper, FEM code for fully coupled THM phenomena is developed to analyze methane hydrate dissociation in the porous media. Coupled partial differential equations are derived from four mass balance equations (methane hydrate, soil, water, and hydrate gas), energy balance equation, and force equilibrium equation. Five main variables (displacement, gas saturation, fluid pressure, temperature, and hydrate saturation) are chosen to give higher numerical convergence through trial combinations of variables, and they can analyze the whole region of a phase change in hydrate bearing porous media. The kinetic model is used to predict dissociation of methane hydrate. Developed THM FEM code is applied to the comparative study on a Masuda's laboratory experiment for the hydrate production, and verified for the stability and convergence.
The dissociation and partial oxidation of $CH_3OH$ on polycrystalline $MoO_3$ powder catalyst were studied using thermal desorption spectrometry(TDS) under high vacuum condition. $CH_3OH$ was dissociatively adsorbed on $MoO_3$ in the forms of surface methoxy($-OCH_3$) and atomic hydrogen(-H). $CH_3OH$ desorbed at 425 K via the re-association of methoxy and adsorbed hydrogen atom, and HCHO desorbed at 545 K through the bond breakage of C-H in methoxy. Water TDS spectra showed two desorption peaks, that is, ${\alpha}$-peak at 428 K and ${\beta}$-peak at 586 K. It was suggested that ${\alpha}$-peak was due to the hydroxyl formed on $MoO_3$ surface during the dissociation of $CH_3OH$, and that ${\beta}$-peak was from the association of lattice oxygen and surface hydrogen atom formed by the bond breakage of C-H in methoxy. Pre-adsorbed oxygen on the surface of $MoO_3$ catalyst increased the amount of adsorption of $CH_3OH$ by promoting the dissociation of $CH_3OH$ on the surface, whereas pre-adsorbed water decreased the amount of adsorption of $CH_3OH$ by blocking of adsorption sites for $CH_3OH$.

This study examined the feasibility of producing sulfuric acid and ammonia water from ammonium sulfate solution using two-compartment electrodialysis with a bipolar membrane (EDBM). Electrodialysis experiments were carried out with 20 wt% ammonium sulfate at different current densities and sulfuric acid concentrations in a concentrate compartment. The current efficiency increased with the current density from 25 to $100\;mA/cm^2$. Nevertheless, the efficiency was relatively low compared with that of general desalting electrodialysis, owing to the diffusion of sulfuric acid from the concentrate compartment to the diluate. The diffusion rate through the anion exchange membrane increased with the sulfuric acid concentration in the concentrate compartment, which decreased the current efficiency. Conversely, the electrical resistance decreased with increasing current density owing to the Joulian heat generated during water dissociation in the transition region of the bipolar membrane under a high electric field. From the experimental results, we concluded that operating at a higher current density is effective from the perspective of current efficiency and electrical resistance when producing sulfuric acid and ammonia water from ammonium sulfate using a two-compartment EDBM process. Further studies on the effects of increasing the sulfuric acid concentration on current efficiency are required to apply the EDBM process practically.
