When we use the circular pipes for wastewater and storm water, we should be known the characteristics of the flow for accurate design. To elevate the design accuracy, we want to know the profile of flow. The roughness coefficient in the Manning equation is constant, but in actuality changed with the relative depth in circular pipe. This study was conducted to calculate the relative normal depth in changing the roughness coefficient (named relative roughness coefficient) with the relative depth in the analysis of gradually varied flow in the circular pipe by Newton-Raphson method. We performed the analysis of gradually varied flow using the relative normal depth and the relative roughness coefficient. We presented the 12 flow profiles with the relative depth and the relative roughness coefficient in circular pipe. The flow classification considering relative depth in circular pipe is available to analyse gradually varied flow profiles.

The purpose of this study was to investigate tile effects of pending depth treatment on water balance in paddy fields. Field experiment was performed in an experimental farm in Taegu, southern part of Korea during the rice growing season In 2001, 2002 and 2003. Experimental plots were three 8m ${\times}$ 80m rectangular plots. Three pending depth treatments, very shallow, shallow, and deep were used. Daily values of water balance components were measured in the field. The irrigation amounts measured at the experimental plots showed that the very shallow and the shallow ponded plots required smaller amount than the deep ponded plot. The shallow ponded plot saved irrigation water about 17.7% compared with the traditional deep ponded plot in 2001 The very shallow ponded plot saved irrigation water about 25.7% compared with the traditional deep ponded Plot in 2002, The shallow ponded plot saved irrigation water about 18% compared with the deep ponded plot in 2003.

The air and water flow distribution are experimentally studied for a round header - flat tube geometry simulating a parallel flow heat exchanger. The number of branch flat tube is thirty. The effects of tube outlet direction, tube protrusion depth as well as mass flux, and quality are investigated. The flow at the header inlet is identified as annular. For the downward flow configuration, the water flow distribution is significantly affected by the tube protrusion depth. For flush-mounted configuration, most of the water flows through frontal part of the header. As the protrusion depth increases, more water is forced to the rear part of the header. The effect of mass flux or quality is qualitatively the same as that of the protrusion depth. Increase of the mass flux or quality forces the water to rear part of the header. For the upward flow configuration, however, most of the water flows through rear part of the header. The protrusion depth, mass flux, or quality does not significantly alter the flow pattern. Possible explanations are provided based on the flow visualization results. Negligible difference on the water flow distribution was observed between the parallel and the reverse flow configuration.
Differences in physicochemical characteristics of sediment and changes in density, height and dry matter of shoots along different water depths were investigated in the stands of Zizania latifolza populations of the littoral zone of Lake Paltangho, Korea. Any significant differences in sediment chemistry were not found along water depth, although sand content decreased slightly with increasing depth. Shoot density of Zizania latqolia decreased with increasing water depth. In shallower water, many of the short shoots died in the early growth stages. The morphology of shoots was taller and heavier in deeper water. The distributions of shoot heights became negatively skewed and leptokurtic as plants grew, and these changes occurred in the earlier growth stages in deeper water. The standing crop of shoots increased with increasing water depth. These results suggest that Zizania lattfolia has a growth strategy for adjustment to deep water through decreasing shoot density and increasing height.

Subsea pipelines have been operated with buried depths of 1.2-4m underneath the seabed to prevent buoyancy and external impacts. Therefore, they have to show resistance to both the soil load and the hydrostatic pressure. In this study, the structural integrity of a subsea pipeline subjected to soil load and hydrostatic pressure was evaluated by using FE analyses. A parametric study showed that the internal pressure increased the plastic collapse depth by increasing the resistance to plastic collapse. The hoop stress increased with an increase in the buried depth for the same water depth; however, the hoop stress decreased with an increase in the water depth for the same buried depth.

The high rate algal ponds (HRAP) powered and mixed by a paddlewheel have been widely used for over 50 years to culture microalgae for the production of various products. Since light incidence is limited to the surface, water depth can affect microalgal growth in HRAP. To investigate the effect of water depth on microalgal growth, a mixed microalgal culture constituting three major strains of microalgae including Chlorella sp., Scenedesmus sp., and Stigeoclonium sp. (CSS), was grown at different water depths (20, 30, and 40 cm) in the HRAP, respectively. The HRAP with 20cm of water depth had about 38% higher biomass productivity per unit area ($6.16{\pm}0.33g{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}d^{-1}$) and required lower nutrients and energy consumption than the other water depths. Specifically, the algal biomass of HRAP under 20cm of water depth had higher settleability through larger floc size (83.6% settleability within 5 min). These results indicate that water depth can affect the harvesting process as well as cultivation of microalgae. Therefore, we conclude that water depth is an important parameter in HRAP design for mass cultivation of microalgae.
Korea's multi-purpose dams, which were constructed in the 1970s and 1980s, have a single outlet located near the bottom for hydropower generation. Problems such as freezing damage to crops due to cold water discharge and an increase the foggy days have been raised downstream of some dams. In this study, we analyzed the effect of water intake depth on the reservoir's water temperature stratification structure and outflow temperature targeting Hapcheon Reservoir, where hypolimnetic withdrawal is drawn via a fixed depth outlet. Using AEM3D, a three-dimensional hydrodynamic water quality model, the vertical water temperature distribution of Hapcheon Reservoir was reproduced and the seasonal water temperature stratification structure was analyzed. Simulation periods were wet and dry year to compare and analyze changes in water temperature stratification according to hydrological conditions. In addition, by applying the intake depth change scenario, the effect of water intake depth on the thermal structure was analyzed. As a result of the simulation, it was analyzed that if the hypolimnetic withdrawal is changed to epilimnetic withdrawal, the formation location of the thermocline will decrease by 6.5 m in the wet year and 6.8 m in the dry year, resulting in a shallower water depth. Additionally, the water stability indices, Schmidt Stability Index (SSI) and Buoyancy frequency (N2), were found to increase, resulting in an increase in thermal stratification strength. Changing higher withdrawal elevations, the annual average discharge water temperature increases by 3.5℃ in the wet year and by 5.0℃ in the dry year, which reduces the influence of the downstream river. However, the volume of the low-water temperature layer and the strength of the water temperature stratification within the lake increase, so the water intake depth is a major factor in dam operation for future water quality management.
Tube phonation in water has been widely used for voice training among semi-occluded vocal tract (SOVT) exercises in which the patient bubbles with phonation keeping the tube submerged in water. This study aims to investigate the effect of tube diameter and water depth on bubble height and maximum phonation time (MPT) for patients with hyperfunctional voice disorders. Seventeen patients with hyperfunctional voice disorders were asked to bubble with sustained /u/ at the different inner diameters of tube (5, 7, and 10 mm), water depth (4, 7, and 10 cm). A water resistance phonation biofeedback system using a water height sensor was used for recording bubble height and MPT. The bubble height was significantly changed by the tube diameter while MPT was significantly changed with the tube diameter and water depth. Although the wider tube presented significantly lower bubble height for a given depth, relatively consistent bubble height was maintained. Depending on the water depth, the bubble height did not significantly differ for a given tube diameter. In addtion, MPT significantly decreased with water depth and a wider tube led significantly shorter MPT. A water level-driven water resistance biofeedback system provided useful information on bubble characteristics and vocal fold vibration depending on tube diameter and water depth. It can be useful to monitor the breath support during water resistance phonation for patients with hyperfunctional voice disorders.
Shallow water withdrawal systems have been replaced with a selected withdrawal system to keep stable raw water quality in spite of occurrence of algae and muddy inflow. Before reconstruction of the water intake tower in Yongdam reservoir supplying water to Gosan water treatment facility, we have predicted flow patterns of inflowing water into the water intake tower for various withdrawal conditions. It has been predicted that the water in the withdrawal layer is significantly inflowed from the front with fast velocity into the water intake tower irrespective of withdrawal depth, while the water away from the withdrawal layer is withdrawed a little from the side with slow velocity.

The labyrinth weir can be applied to increase the overflow rate, maintain constant water depth and improve water quality. This weir can be defined that the plane shape of overflow part is not straight line and is a kind of weir having overflow length increased by changing its plane shape. There are relatively few studies related to effect of maintaining the water depth which has been used to consider for various functions as hydraulic facilities and design conditions of labyrinth weirs. Thus, it is needed to conduct studies related to the maintenance of water depth by the labyrinth weir. This study was to provide fundamental data which may become a facilitator for more accurate and proper design of hydraulic facilities related to the maintenance of water depth. The ranges of constant water depth ($H_t/P=0.08\sim0.27$) were provided for the triangle type labyrinth weir, and the effect of maintaining water depth was analyzed using hydraulic laboratory experiments and 3D-numerical simulations(Flow-3D).
