  • Hemicelluloses pre-extracted from Korean mixed wood chip were investigated as a wet-end additive. Hemicelluloses dissolved in hot water and alkali solution were isolated by ethyl alcohol precipitation from pre-extractives. They showed molecular weight of 9,000 ~ 27,000 g/mol as revealed by size exclusion chromatography. The reduction of molecular weight through hot water extraction was caused by autohydrolysis. Chemical composition of the hemicelluloses were analyzed with high-performance liquid chromatography and UV-Vis spectroscopy. As the surface charge of isolated hemicelluloses were negative, the adsorption of hemicelluloses onto softwood unbleached kraft pulp fiber was promoted by poly-DADMAC. The physical properties of handsheets increased as the molecular weight of hemicellulose increased. On the other hands, the optical property decreased with hemicellulose adsorption.

  • This study was initiated to investigate the applicability of sludge from water or waste water treatment on the crop cultivation. Sludge is generated in the process of water and wastewater treatment process in large quantity. The sludge can cause many environmental problems. we have a many available treatment methods of sludge However, these methods still shortcomings and are not. The composition of typical municipal sludge contains organics and inorganics. The organics components are normally burnt in high temperature and mainly inorganics components are left after thermal treatment process. For the production of artificial media, chabazite was used as additive, and the mixed material was thermally treated in the firing kiln at 800~1,10$0^{\circ}C$ for about 10 minutes. The physical and chemical characteristics of artificial media were analyzed and it showed that the artificial media could be used as a media for plants and soil conditioner for farmland. The concentrations of the toxic heavy metals in the media were lower then those in the soil quality standard for farmland. This study illustrated that the artificial media production process, and introduced how to produce it's possible application as a media for Plant growth.

  • A worker who grinded the inner parts of camshafts for automobile engines using water-soluble metalworking fluid (MWF) for 14 years was diagnosed with sinusitis. We postulated that the outbreak of sinusitis could be associated with exposure to microbes contaminated in water-soluble MWF during the grinding operation. To suggest responsible agents for this outbreak, quantitative exposure assessment for chemical and biological agents and prevalence of work-related respiratory symptoms by questionnaire were studied. The exposure ranges of MWF mist (0.59 $mg/m^3$to 2.12 $mg/m^3$) measured during grinding exceeded 0.5 $mg/m^3$ of the recommended exposure limit (REL). Grinder's exposures to bacteria, fungi and endotoxins were also generally higher than not only the proposed standards, but also those reported by several studies to identify the cause of respiratory effects. Statistical test indicated that the prevalence rate of reported symptoms related to nasal cavities showed no significant differences among the operations. Evaluation on grinding operation characteristics and quantitative exposure assessment indicated that repeated exposure to MWF mist including microbes contaminated from the use of water-soluble MWF may cause respiratory diseases like sinusitis or at least increase susceptibility to the development of sinusitis

  • Phosphorus is one of the limiting nutrients for the growth of phytoplankton and algae and is therefore one of leading causes of eutrophication. Most phosphorous in water is present in the form of phosphates. Different technologies have been applied for phosphate removal from wastewater, such as physical, chemical precipitation by using ferric, calcium or aluminum salts, biological, and adsorption. Adsorption is one of efficient method to remove phosphates in wastewater. To find the optimal media for phosphate removal, physical characteristics of media was analysed, and the phosphate removal efficiency of media (silica sand, slag, zeolite, activated carbon) was also investigated in this study. Silica sand showed highest relative density and wear rate, and phosphate removal efficiency. Silica sand removed about 36% of phosphate. To improve the phosphate removal efficiency of silica sand, Fe coating was conducted. Fe coated silica sand showed 3 times higher removal efficiency than non-coated one.

  • There is an increasing incidence in health problems related to environmental issues that originate from inadequate treatment of sewage. This has compelled scientists to engage in innovative technologies to achieve a effective disinfection process. Electrolysis has emerged as one of the more feasible alternatives to conventional disinfection process. The objectives of the present paper were to investigate the effect of chemical characteristics on oxidant formation and Escherichia coli (E. coli) disinfection in synthetic sewage effluents. The influence of parameters such as COD, SS, T-N and T-P were investigated using laboratory scale batch reactor. The results showed that the higher COD, T-N and T-P concentration, the lower N, N-Dimethyl-4-nitrosoaniline (RNO, indicator of the generation of OH radical) degradation and E. coli disinfection was observed. The order of effect of RNO degradation and E. coli disinfection was T-P > COD > T-N > SS. When 4 parameter of water quality were worked simultaneously, oxidants formation and disinfection was decreased with increase of the concentration of sewage. To increase of the disinfection performance, the increase of disinfection time or electric power was need.

  • This study was performed to investigate the physico-chemical properties and phytoplankton concentration from February to December, 2007 in Gwangju area reservoirs. Water samples from 20 reservoirs were analyze d. As results of the water quality analysis, the average pH was 7.6 and annual pH were 6.3~9.6. The higher pH of 8.6~9.6 were showed from March to August due to eutrophication. Chlorophyll-a concentration ranged from 0.4 to $164.3\;mg/m^3$. The highest chlorophyll-a concentration was observed in August. BOD was correlated with SS, T-N, and Chlorophyll-a(R=0.82, 0.90 and 0.84) respectively. COD was correlated with BOD, SS and Chlorophyll-a(R= 0.89, 0.77 and 0.76) respectively. The T-N/T-P ratios were 4~281, so phosph orus was considered to be the limiting factor in most of points. The trophic state showed eutrophicate states in Gwangju reservoirs. Therefore it was necessary to monitor continuously. In order to monitor the reservoirs, an algae prediction system must be used.

  • The hydration of cement contributes to the performance characteristics of concrete, such as strength and durability. In order to improve the utilization efficiency of cement and its early properties, the particle size distribution (PSD) of cement varies considerably, and the effects of the particle size distribution of cement on the hydration process should be considered. In order to evaluate effects of PSD separately, experiments testing the isothermal heat generated during the hydration of cements with different particle size distributions but the same chemical composition have been carried out. The measurable hydration depth for cement hydration was proposed and deduced based on the experimental results, and a PSD hydration model was developed in this paper for simulating the effects of particle size distribution on the hydration process of cement. First, a reference hydration rate was derived from the isothermal heat generated by the hydration of ordinary Portland cement. Then, the model was extended to take into account the effect of water-to-cement ratio, hereinafter which was referred to as PSD hydration model. Finally, the PSD hydration model was applied to simulate experiments measuring the isothermal heat generated by the hydration of cement with different particle size distributions at different water-to-cement ratios. This showed that the PSD hydration model had simulated the effects of particle size distribution and water-to-cement ratio on the hydration process of cement with satisfactory accuracy.

  • The Anyang River runs through highly industrialized area and joins the lower part of the Han River. loading out large amounts of potential pollutants. Attempts were made to understand geochemical behavior of trace elements in the stream sedimens collected from the bottom of the river and the stream water. Bottom sediments, suspended solids and stream waters were collected and analysed for the chemical and mineralogical composition. Heavy metals including Cr, Zn, Ni, and Co in the sediments were enriched appeared to reflect anthropogenic input. Pb, Cu, As were also enriched between several to 10 times , compared to background levels. Although some heavy metals were derived from anthropogeic input, geochemical associations seem to implyh much of the elements are originated from natural sources as well, mainly from granitic rocks . This is also supported by the mineralogical composition of the suspended solids, which are mainly composed of quartz, feldspar and mica. Most of the elements are associated with total carbon and clay sized fractions, with high values of correlation coefficient. Most of the elements are associated with total carbon and clay sized fractions , with high values of correlation coefficient. It was noteworthy that Hg was detected between 2 and 4 ppb in the stream water.

  • Analysis has been made of the anti-corrosive property of organic coating under the shear stress of the flow by means of AC impedance method. Marine anti-corrosive painted panels were placed in the water channel with varying flow rate, thereby experiencing varying flow shear stress on the surfaces. The velocities of the salt water were ranged from 1.48 to 5.2 m/s and the coating thickness of from $70{\mu}m\;to\;140{\mu}m$. For all coating thicknesses investigated, the poorer anti-corrosive property and the lower adhesion strength have been found for the higher shear stress. It has been found that the shear stress accelerates the aging of organic marine coatings.

  • Development and discovery of efficient, cost-effective, and robust electrocatalysts are imperative for practical and widespread implementation of water electrolysis and fuel cell techniques in the anticipated hydrogen economy. The electrochemical reactions involved in water electrolysis, i.e., hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, are complex inner-sphere reactions with slow multi-electron transfer kinetics. To develop active electrocatalysts for water electrolysis, the physicochemical properties of the electrode surfaces in electrolyte solutions should be investigated and understood in detail. When electrocatalysis is conducted using nanoparticles with large surface areas and active surface states, analytical techniques with sub-nanometer resolution are required, along with material development. Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) is an electrochemical technique for studying the surface reactions and properties of various types of electrodes using a very small tip electrode. Recently, the morphological and chemical characteristics of single nanoparticles and bio-enzymes for catalytic reactions were studied with nanometer resolution by combining SECM with atomic force microscopy (AFM). Herein, SECM techniques are briefly reviewed, including the AFM-SECM technique, to facilitate further development and discovery of highly active, cost-effective, and robust electrode materials for efficient electrolysis and photolysis.
