Seasonal variations of dominant algae species and the effects of these algae on coagulation and filteration of water treatment were investigated at Chilseo water treatment plant in downstream of Nakdong river from January in 1995 to Desember of 1998. The water quality of Nakdong river was found to be a hyper eutrophic state during the investigation periods. In the measurement, Chlorophyll-a contents ranged $20.7{\sim}180.9{\mu}g/l$ and total nitrogen contents(T-N) and total phosphorus contents(T-P) exceeded more than 3.4mg/l and 0.1mg/l, respectively. The changes in dominant algae species was in the order of Stepanodiscus sp., Asterionella sp., Melosira sp., Microcystis sp. and Synedra sp. from spring to winter. Microcystis sp. especially, was blooming during summer and Synedra sp. and Stepanodiscus sp. during winter. Although most diatomous algae appeared in the water treatment process caused filter clogging and reduced efficiency of coagulation and sedimentation, Synedra sp. and Stepanodiscus sp were revealed as the main trouble algae. Malfunction of water treatment process caused by Synedra sp. and Stepanodiscus sp. started at the algae concentrations of 800cells/ml and 1,820cells/ml, respectively. When chlorophyll-a content was $18.9{\mu}g/l$, the optimum amounts of coagulant were found to be 40mg/l of Alum and 16mg/l of PACS. Under condition of chlorophyll-a content of $154.1{\mu}g/l$, addition of Alum at the level of 75mg/l and PACS at the level of 35mg/l showed the lowest turibidity. The result indicates that increased amounts of the coagulants should be added for a better water treatment as chlorophyll-a contents increased. Addition of Alum at the amount of 60mg/l and 30mg/l of PACS removed Stepanodiscus sp. algae at the rate of 85% and 83%, respectively. In case of Synedra sp., 50mg/l of Alum and 25mg/l of PACS showed removal rates of 79% and 81%, respectively. Synedra sp. algae at the standing crops of 1,500cells/ml started filter clogging and a filtering process was completely inhibited after 8 hours. At this situation the filter clogging by Synedra sp. algae occurred at the depth of 5cm from the top anthracite layer. On the other, other algae did filter clogging at the depth of 10cm.

Changes of seasonal and vertical water quality was analyzed with physico-chemical data from Soyang and Paldang river-reservoir system in Korea during the 1996 to 1998. In Soyang river-reservoir system, the water column was well stratified, which narrow epilimnion layer of 5 to 10 m depth in spring to summer enlarged gradually about 40 m depth in fall as going to times. In contrast, metalimnion layer tended to be narrow during the same period. Water temperature of hypolimnion was maintained about $5^{\circ}C$ continuously throughout the year. DO of the epilimnion layer was supersaturated from spring to summer, however, it was decreased to 75% at the epilimnion layer and $45{\sim}50%$ at the hypolimnion layer at the late fall. The lowest conductivity of below $50\;{\mu}S/cm$ was observed at the metalimnion layer during thesummer to fall. In Paldang river-reservoir system, the water column wag well mixed layer throughout the year, although water temperature was changed seasonally from $5^{\circ}C$ in February to $28^{\circ}C$ in July. Water temperature between upper and lower layer was different about $5^{\circ}C$ from late spring (May) to early fall (September). DO was over and less saturated in upper and lower layer during the early summer to early fall, respectively. Conductivity was decreased to $90\;{\mu}S/cm$ in lower layer of below $4{\sim}5\;m$ depth during the late spring to early fall and that of upper layer of above 10 m depth decreased to about $100\;{\mu}S/cm$ during the late fall (November) and early spring (March). Retention time of Soyang river-reservoir system was much longer than that of Paldang river-reservoir system. Chlorophyll a, T-N and T-P concentration in Paldang river-reservoir system were higher than that of Soyang river-reservoir system by a factor of 2.7, 1.2 and 2.6, respectively. Algal blooming was deeply affected by the nutrients than the retention time.
This study was to develop the most effective cooling system which is needed to cool greenhouse during summer night for getting up early blooming of strawberry. Various cooling systems were designed and constructed to use cool air and water from an abandoned coal mine. Cooling systems built for this study included an evaporative cooling system with cooling pad, heat exchanger using small or large radiator, and cooling duct for drawing cool air from coal mine. The cooling pad, small or large radiator and cooling duct were individually tested. Also, combined cooling system was tested by operating cooling pad, small radiator, and cooling duct simultaneously. The results in this study showed that individual cooling systems such as cooling pad, small radiator, and cooling duct had about the same effect on cooling greenhouse. The combined cooling system had little better cooling effect than individual cooling system except the large radiator. The most effective cooling system for cooling of greenhouse was obtained by using a large radiator as the heat exchanger. By using a large radiator, temperature in greenhouse was dropped into about $15^{\circ}C$ when outside temperature was $23-24^{\circ}C$ during summer night.
Ongoing port baseline surveys are essential for developing ballast water management procedures in order to control unwanted or potentially risky species. Seasonal distributional patterns of marine dinoflagellate Noctiluca scintillans internationally recognized as harmful species and the related environmental factors were surveyed at Incheon, Gwangyang and Ulsan seaports in Korea from 2007 to 2009. The above three seaports were chosen because of their status as the busiest in Korea and characterized by their different bioregions. Average temperature ranged from $2.08^{\circ}C$ in winter to $26.39^{\circ}C$ in summer at Incheon, $7.22^{\circ}C$ in winter to $25.77^{\circ}C$ in summer at Gwangyang, and $11.59^{\circ}C$ in winter to $21.67^{\circ}C$ in summer at Ulsan during the study period. Average salinity varied from 26.88 in winter to 31.25 in summer at Incheon, 22.83 in winter to 33.41 in summer at Gwangyang, and 30.04 in winter to 33.90 in summer at Ulsan. Noctiluca scintillans appeared consistently at all ports during the study period, indicating its eurythermal and euryhaline nature. The highest abundances (21,813 to 41,753 $inds{\cdot}m^{-3}$) of N. scintillans were observed in May 2008 and 2009 at the outer stations of Incheon port. Abundances of between 10,000 and 30,000 $inds{\cdot}m^{-3}$ were only observed at the innermost station of Ulsan in May, while abundances of between 10,000 and 40,000 $inds{\cdot}m^{-3}$ were frequently observed throughout all stations at Gwangyang during the study period, coinciding with consistently high concentration of chlorophyll-a (hereafter chl-a) ($4.32-8.24\;{\mu}g\;l^{-1}$) compared to other ports. Spatio-temporal variation of chl-a concentration was not significantly correlated with abundances of N. scintillans (p>0.01). However, relatively high chl-a concentrations were consistently recorded along with high abundances of N. scintillans throughout all stations at Gwangyang compared to other ports. Abundances of N. scintillans observed at the three surveyed ports did not significantly (p>0.01) affect the concentration of dissolved oxygen in the surface mixed layer, indicating that the species abundances were not enough to cause reduction of dissolved oxygen during the study period. Presented results indicated that the Gwangyang seaport may provide the most suitable environment for a wide range of N. scintillans blooming compared to other ports.
This study evaluated the potential human health risk on the basis of the level of bioaccumulation and EDI (Estimated Daily Intake) of microcystin-LR, one of hepatotoxic, in organs, including liver, muscle, viscera and gill, of fish from Lake Yeongeheon and Lake Daecheong when the cyanobacterial water-blooms broke out. The result has confirmed that Carassius cuvieri from Lake Yeongcheon contains higher level of microcystin-LR in its organs including liver. In Lake Daecheong, omnivorous Hemibarbus labeo and phytoplanktivorous Carassius cuvieri have shown high microcystin-LR level on average, especially higher for viscera, and Carassius cuvieri has appeared to contain higher level of microcystin-LR in the liver and the gill compared with other species. As a result of comparison between EDI of microcystin-LR from each organs and TDI (Tolerable Daily Intake) of WHO (Chorus and Bartram, 1999) to evaluate human health risk, the EDI levels from Carassius cuvieri's organs except museles have exceeded TDI level at the both lakes. Consequently, the study has proved that microcystin was bioaccumulated in the various parts of fish, and it can be ingested by human resulting in risking human health. Continuous monitoring and reducing consumption of fish, especially Carassius cuvieri, during the cyanobacterial water-blooming period will be needed to protect human health.

Due to climate change and its consequential spring temperature rise, flowering time of Robinia pseudoacacia has advanced and a simultaneous blooming phenomenon occurred in different regions in South Korea. These changes in flowering time became a major crisis in the domestic beekeeping industry and the demand for accurate prediction of flowering time for R. pseudoacacia is increasing. In this study, we developed and compared performance of four different models predicting flowering time of R. pseudoacacia for the entire country: a Single Model for the country (SM), Modified Single Model (MSM) using correction factors derived from SM, Group Model (GM) estimating parameters for each region, and Local Model (LM) estimating parameters for each site. To achieve this goal, the bloom date data observed at 26 points across the country for the past 12 years (2006-2017) and daily temperature data were used. As a result, bloom dates for the north central region, where spring temperature increase was more than two-fold higher than southern regions, have advanced and the differences compared with the southwest region decreased by 0.7098 days per year (p-value=0.0417). Model comparisons showed MSM and LM performed better than the other models, as shown by 24% and 15% lower RMSE than SM, respectively. Furthermore, validation with 16 additional sites for 4 years revealed co-krigging of LM showed better performance than expansion of MSM for the entire nation (RMSE: p-value=0.0118, Bias: p-value=0.0471). This study improved predictions of bloom dates for R. pseudoacacia and proposed methods for reliable expansion to the entire nation.

Although the problems of the algal blooms have been world-widely observed in freshwater, estuary, and marine throughout the year, it is not yet certain what are the basic causes of such blooms. Consequently, it is very difficult to predict when and where algal blooms occur. The constituents of the Asian dust are in a good agreement with the elements required for the algal growth, which suggests some possible relationship between the algal blooms and the Asian dust. There have been frequently algal blooms in drinking water from rivers or lakes. However, there is no any algal blooms in upwelling waters where the Asian dust cannot penetrate into the soil due to its relatively weak settling velocity (size of particles, $4.5{\pm}1.5{\mu}m$), which implies the possible close relationship of the Asian dust with algal blooms. The present initiative study is thus intended firstly in Korea to illustrate such a relationship by reviewing typical previous studies along with 12 years of weekly iron profiles (2001~2012) and two slant culture experiments with the dissolved Asian dust. The result showed bacterial suspected colonies in the slant culture experiment that are qualitatively in a good agreement with the recent Japanese studies. Since the diatoms require cheap energy (8%) compared to other phytoplankton (100%) to synthesize their cell walls by silicate, the present results can be used to predict algal blooms by diatoms if the concentrations of iron and silicate are available during spring and fall. It can be postulated that the algal blooms occur only if the environmental factors such as light, nutrients, calm water surface layer, temperature, and pH are simultaneously satisfied with the requirements of the micronutrients of mineral ions supplied by the Asian dust as enzymatic cofactors for the rapid bio-synthesis of the macromolecules during algal blooms. Simple eco-friendly methods to regulate the algal blooms are suggested for the initial stage of blooming with limited area: 1) to cover up the water surface with black curtain and inhibit photosynthesis during the day time, 2) to blow air (20.9%) or pure oxygen into the bottom of the water and inhibit rubisco for carbon uptake and nitrate reductase for nitrogen uptake activities in algal growth during the night, 3) to eliminate the resting spores or cysts by suction of bottom sediments as deep as 5 cm to prevent the next year germinations.

Objective: The objective of this study was to compare the quality of dry-aged beef from cull Hanwoo cows slaughtered at 60 or 80 months old. Methods: A total of eight cull Hanwoo carcasses with a quality grade of 3 (low-grade) were selected and divided into two age groups: 63.5±2.5 months old (n = 4) and 87.8±4.5 months old (n = 4). Whole longissimus thoracis et lumborum from the 11th rib to the last lumbar vertebrae, including the back fat, was removed from the carcass at 24 h postmortem and aged for 50 days in darkness at a temperature of 2℃±1℃, a relative humidity of 85% and an air flow of 2 m/s. The sampling was performed aseptically after 0, 20, 24, 40, and 50 days of aging. Results: Regardless of the aging period, aging increased the lightness (p<0.05), redness (p<0.05) and yellowness (p<0.05) at initial blooming (90 min after slicing) and the overall acceptance (p<0.05). No further tenderization effect was found after 20 days of aging, but aging for 50 days significantly increased the lipid oxidation (p<0.05). The generation of aroma volatiles in the roast steak from aged samples was higher (p<0.05) than that of non-aged samples. No significant effect of age at slaughter was found on the color, pH, water-holding capacity, cooking loss, shear force value, bacterial counts, volatile basic nitrogen, consumer acceptance, lipid oxidation, fatty acid composition or aroma volatiles. Conclusion: The quality of dry-aged beef obtained from cull Hanwoo cows slaughtered at either 60 or 80 months old with similar quality grade was comparable and extending dry aging for more than 40 days is not recommended considering the costs and further lipid oxidation.
To investigate bacteria with algal Iytic activities against Anabaena cylindrica when water blooming occurs and to study enzyme profiles of alga-Iytic bacteria, various bacterial strains were isolated from surface waters and sediments in eutrophic lakes or reservoirs in Korea. Abacterial strain AK-07 was characterized and identified as Acinetobacter johnsonii based on its16S rDNA base sequence. When AK-07 was co-cultivated with A. cylindrica, bacterial cells propagated to $8\;{\times}\;10^8$ cfu $ml^{-1}$ and Iyses algal cells. However, culture filtrates of AK-07 did not exhibit algal Iytic activities. That suggesting the enzymes on the surfaces of the bacterium might be effective algal Iytic agents to cause Iyses of cells. Acinetobacter johnsonii AK-07 exhibited high degradation activities against A. cylindrica, and formed alginase, caseinase, lipase, fucodian hydrolase, and laminarinase. Moreover, glycosidases for example ${\beta}$-galatosidase, ${\beta}$-glucosidase, ${\beta}$-glucosaminidase, and ${\beta}$-xylosidase, which hydrolyzed ${\beta}$-0-glycosidic bonds, were found in cell-free extracts of A. johnsonii AK-07. Other glycosidase such as ${\alpha}$-galctosidases, ${\alpha}$-N-Ac-galctosidases, ${\alpha}$-mannosidases, and ${\alpha}$- L-fuco-sidases, which cleavage ${\alpha}$-0-glycosidic bondsare not detected. In the results, enzyme systemsof A. johnsonii AK-07 were very complex to do-grade cell walls of cyanobacteria. The polysaccharides or peptidoglycans of A. cylindrica maybe hydrolyzed and metabolized to a range of easily utilizable monosaccharides or other low molecular weight organic substances by strain AK-07 of A. johnsonii.

Three harmful algal bloom species with similar morphology, Cochlodinium polykrikoides, Gyodinium impudicum and Gymodinium catenatum have damaged to aquatic animals or human health by either making massive blooms or intoxication of shellfishes in a food chain. Eco-physiological and hydrodynamic studies on the harmful algae offer useful informations in the understanding their bloom mechanism by giving promising data for the prediction and modelling of harmful algal blooms event. Thus, we studied the abundance of these species in the coastal area of South Sea of Korea and their effects of temperature, salinity, irradiance and nutrient on the growth for the isolates. The timing for initial appearance of the three species around the coastal area of Namhaedo, Narodo and Wando was between Bate July and late August in 1999 when water temperature ranged from $22.8^{\circ}C\;to\;26.5^{\circ}C$ Vegetative cells of C. polykrikoides and G. impudicum were abundant until late September when water temperature had been dropped to less than $23^{\circ}C$. By contrast, vegetative cell of G. catenatum disappeared before early September, showing shorter period of abundance than the other two species in the South Sea. Both G. impudicum and G. catenatum revealed comparatively low density with a maximal cell density of 3,460 cells/L and 440 cells/L, respectively without making any bloom, while C. polykrikoides made massive blooms with a maximal cell density more than $40\times10^6$cells/L, The three species showed a better growth at the relatively higher water temperature ranging from 22 to $28^{\circ}C$ with their maximal growth rate at $25^{\circ}C$ in culture, which almost corresponded with the water temperature during the outbreak of C. polykrikoides in the coastal area of South Sea. Also, they all showed a relatively higher growth at the salinity from 30 to $35\%$. Specially, G. impudicum showed the euryhalic characteristics among the species, On the other hand, growth rate of G. catenatum decreased sharply with the increase of water temperature at the experimental ranges more than $35\%$. The higher of light intensities showed the better growth rates for the three species, Moreover, C. polykrikoides and G. impudirum continued their exponential growth even at 7,500 lux, the highest level of light intensity in the experiment, Therefore, It is assumed that C. polykrikoides has a physiological capability to adapt and utilize higher irradiance resulting in the higher growth rate without any photo inhibition response at the sea surface where there is usually strong irradiance during its blooming season. Although C. poiykikoides and G. impudicum continued their linear growth with the increase of nitrate ($NO_3^-$) and ammonium ($NH_4^-$) concentrations at less than the $40{\mu}M$, they didn't show any significant differences in growth rates with the increase of nitrate and ammonium concentrations at more than $40{\mu}M$, signifying that the nitrogen critical point for the growth of the two species stands between 13.5 and $40{\mu}M$. Also, even though both of the two species continued their linear growth with the increase of phosphate ($PO_4^{2-}$) concentrations at less than the $4.05{\mu}M$, there were no any significant differences in growth rates with the increase of phosphate concentrations at more than $4.05{\mu}M$, signifying that the phosphate critical point for the growth of the two species stands between 1.35 and $4.05{\mu}M$. On the other hand, C. polykrikoides has made blooms at the oligotrophic environment near Narodo and Namhaedo where the concentration of DIN and DIP are less than 1.2 and $0.3{\mu}M$, respectively. We attributed this phenomenon to its own ecological characteristics of diel vertical migration through which C. polykrikoides could uptake enough nutrients from the deep sea water near bottom during the night time irrespective of the lower nutrient pools in the surface water.
