  • Argo drifters provide information of the vertical structure in the water column and have a potential for the improvement of understanding phytoplankton primary production and biogeochemical cycles in combination with ocean color satellite data, which can obtain the horizontal distribution of phytoplankton biomass in the surface layer. Our examples show that using Argo drifters with satellite-measured horizontal distribution of phytoplankton biomass at the sea surface allow an improved understanding of the development of the spring bloom. The other possible uses of Argo drifter are discussed.

  • Following the industrialization and urbanization in Korea, algal bloom causes aesthetic displeasure and many other problems such as taste and odor, coloration, scum, increase in pH, filter-bed blockage. There were some cases involving human death by microcystins during summertime in foreign countries. In Korea, Harmful cyanobacteria such as Microcystis and Anabaena develop in summer in the Daecheong reservoir, one of the main water resources, with the retention time of above 200 days. To better control algal bloom, the Ministry of Environment has been running algal bloom alert system from 1998 for the Daecheong reservoir, which needs to be improved to reflect the characteristics of river-type lakes. For this reason, we try to find new measures to improve an algal bloom alert system for each water zone considering the characteristics of harmful cyanobacteria in this study.

  • Genus Prorocentrum of dinoflagellate has been known as representative causative algae of red tide in Masan-Jinhae Bay. Prorocentrum populations- P. dentatum Stein, p. micans Ehrenberg, P. minimum (Pavillard) Schiller and P. triestinum Schiller- were monitored from January 1990 to August 1997, Prorocentrum populations usually have bloomed during the water stratification periods from June to August. Water temperature ranged from 24$^{\circ}C$ to 28$^{\circ}C$ and salinity from 24$\textperthousand$ to 34$\textperthousand$ during the Prorocentrum blooms. Bloom magnitude of Prorooentrum populations gradually increased from offshore to inshore area of coastal embayment and this populations tended to concentrate from surface to 2.5m depth. Prorocentrum algal blooms have become more frequent and intense than those of 1980s and early 1990s. P. minimum was the most persistent species in terms of bloom frequency and cellular abundance.

  • To explore limiting factors of spring bloom caused by waste disposal after dumping activity commenced in the Yellow Sea, we used a 1-dimensional temperature-ecological coupled model. The vertical structure of temperature and vertical diffusivity (Kh) are calculated by the temperature model with sea surface temperature using the 2.5 layers turbulence closure scheme. The ecological model applied results at the temperature model consisted of five state variables (DIN, DIP, phytoplankton, zooplankton, and detritus) forced by photosynthetically available radiation. We simulate year-to-year variations of plankton and nutrients using the coupled model from 1998 to 2000 and compare results of the model with observed data. It turned out that temperature is the growth factor of spring bloom in dumping area. During the winter the weak stratification made sufficient supply of the accumulated nutrients from the sea bed into the upper water column and led to the bloom in the coming spring. Radiation also turned out to be another important factor of spring bloom in the study area. Insufficient radiation of March 1999 showed low chlorophyll-a concentration despite sufficient nutrients in the surface.

  • The authors examined the variations of environmental factors, the distributions of cyanobacteria, heterotrophic bacteria, and microorganisms that inhibit the growth of Anabaena cylindrica according to development and extinction of cyanobacterial bloom at a site in Daechung Dam reservoir. And certified the relationship between each other. Water temperature variated in a typical pattern. pH and concentrations of dissolved oxygen and chlorophylla was high in bloom period, and lowered with the decline of bloom. Phosphorus played as a growth-limiting factor at this study site. Total nitrogen concentration increased during blooming period, which indicated that nitrogen has been fixed by aquatic organisms such as cyanobacteria. Cyanobacteria distributed from June 17, and such cyanobacterial species as Anabaena spp., Aphanizomenon spp., Microcystis spp., Oscillatoria spp. and Phormidium spp. was detected during study period. Anabaena spp. distributed relatively highly distributed from July 23 to September 22, and disappeared completely at September 29. Heterotrophic bacterial and cyanobacterial populations varied inverse-proportionally. There was a relevancy between the variations of Anabaena spp., heterotrophic bacteria, and microorganisms that inhibit the growth of Anabaena cylindrica. Microorganisms that inhibit the growth of Anabaena cylindrica distributed from early growth phase of Anabaena spp. population to immediately after the extinction of Anabaena spp. With the population of Anabaena cylindrica growth-inhibiting microorganisms decreasing, increases of heterotrophic bacterial population followed it. Thease results indicate that microorganisms have a part in the extinction of cyanobacterial bloom, especially at its destroying period.

  • Monthly mean chlorophyll concentration in the East Sea was estimated from the ocean color observed by the Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) on Nimbus-7 satellite which had performed various remote sensing missions from 1979 to 1986. The areas of high chlorophyll concentration were found in the sea between Siberia coast and Sakhalin Island, in the Donghan Bay and in the Ulleung Basin. In the southwestern East Sea, especially in the area near Ulleung Island, the yearly maximum chlorophyll concentration occurred in December. The chlorophyll concentration in Ulleung Basin in December was about two times higher than during spring bloom in April. The early winter bloom occurred in the warm side of the front that was formed between warm water from the East China Sea and nutrition rich cold water from the northern East Sea.

  • We introduce a technical equipment of GATe (Green (algae)-tide) water combine developed by K-water. The GATe water combine consists of five modules: main body and buoyant, transfer hopper, screen conveyer, sludge remover, and separator of algae and waste. Also a sprinkler, as the pre-treatment step if necessary, is equipped to the device to spread out environmental-friendly algaecide under the circumstance that the level of algal bloom does not reach to the scum-forming condition. The overall module system of this device is very simple. Based on the field test, the device covers surface area of ca. $500,000m^2day^{-1}$ during the period from May to July, and treats water volume as much as $500,000m^3day^{-1}$ in spite of some variation depending on the water quality condition. The removal efficiency of the device appeared to be over 90%. In addition, the operating duration of the device was able to expand to cover the period between March and November. We expect this new technology can be used to solve algal bloom problems in drinking water resource and public water area.

  • Surface water is the main drinking water source in Korea. Algal bloom caused by phytoplankton in reservoir is common event in every summer season. To prevent or control the algal blooms, artificial circulation system has been adopted in many reservoirs, including Hoengseung reservoir. Total 7 hydraulic-gun-aerators were installed around the intake tower in Hoengseung reservoir since 2000. This study is to elucidate the effects of hydraulic-gun-aerators on phytoplankton bloom, pH, DO, temperature and evaluate the selective withdrawal and vertical distribution of phytoplankton by means of submersible fluorescence probe, which features high correlation with a standard ISO method (r=0.90, P<0.0001) for chlorophyll-a quantification.

  • The study was performed to understand the relationships of cyanobacterial bloom and environmental factors in Lake Daechung. The samples were collected weekly from June to October in 2001. The cyanobacterial bloom was divided into the three phases of the early phase, the middle phase and the late phase by phytoplankton standing crops. For the early phase, the correlation coefficients between chl- a and TP, and chl- a and $PO_4$-P were 0.986 and 0.894 respectively. Therefore, phosphorus was a main environmental factor in the development of cyanobacterial bloom. Zeu/Zm ratio and chl-a showed negative correlation of r = -0.995. At the late phase, $PO_4$-P showed the highest relationship (r = 0.958), and TP and temperature showed relatively high relationships (r = 0.857 and r = 0.813). At the late phase, $NH_3$-N showed highly positive relationship (r = 0.921). It was confirmed that $PO_4$-P was the most important contribution factor for the bloom through the regression analysis on the environmental factors. As the result, the decrease of Zeu/Zm ratio and the increase of P concentration influenced cyanobacterial bloom developed rapidly in the early phase. Also the cyanobacterial bloom was decreased in proportion to decreasing of $NH_3$-N concentration in the late phase. It was expected that observation of $NH_3$-N may be a very useful factor on monitoring of the decreasing situation of the bloom.
