  • Bottled water market is growing at a rate of 10% per year in Korea. However, bottled water exhausts ground water. Korean government proposed to provide 'bottled tap water' at a low price in 2008. This study is the estimation of 'bottled tap water' market scale using binary logit model. we calculate that 'bottled tap water' market scale is from at least 92 billion won to 154 billion won by 150, 250 won per a bottled water, respectively. This paper indicates that scale of 'bottled tap water' market is a half of 'bottled water' market in 2007. This result provides that policy-makers with available and responsible information regarding the scale of 'bottled tap water' market.

  • It is very important to forecast water supply for reasonal operation and management of water utilities. In this paper, water supply forecasting models using artificial intelligence are developed. Artificial intelligence models shows better results by using Temperature(t), water supply discharge (t-1) and water supply discharge (t-2), which are expressed by neural network(LMNNWS; Levenberg-Marquardt Neural Network for Water Supply, MDNNWS; MoDular Neural Network for Water Supply) and neuro fuzzy(ANASWS; Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference Systems for Water Supply). ANFISWS model which is applied for water supply forecasting shows stable application to the variable water supply data. As results, MDNNWS model shows the highest overall accuracy among proposed water supply forecasting models and the lowest estimation error with the order of ANFISWS, LMNNWS model.

  • This study characterized water quality of groundwater and purified water used for drinking water in 30 schools in Gyeongsangbukdo Province. The results of the study showed that 43% of groundwater and 45% of purified water were not suitable for drinking. Among them, microbial contaminations were the most serious problem. In raw groundwater, the exceeding rates of total colony counts was the highest in August (53.6%). Purified water samples showed higher rate of exceeding drinking water standard for total colony counts while showing lower rate of exceeding drinking water standard for total coliforms and fecal coliforms in March and August. Overall, proper managements for microbial contaminations are required for both groundwater and purified water. Furthermore, special attention should toward students not to drink water when groundwater or purified water exceeds the drinking water quality standard.

  • Coal seam gas (CSG) production involves extracting methane from coal seams with ground water which is so called a primary by-product of this process, and is often rich in salts and other constituents. The predicted large volume and variable quality of this water make water management a topic associated with CSG production. In the past, the amount of this water used to be pumped into the vacant aquifer, or into the river during the life of individual production wells. Australian government make a strategies for management and beneficial use of the water. From this point of view, a detailed assessment has not been undertaken, it is necessary for water resource production to analysis the "Coal Seam Gas Water (CSG Water) Management Policy Study" published in Queensland, Australia.

  • The purpose of this study is to develope a indicator for agricultural water use. Agricultural water is challenged by the increase of water use in the sectors of urbanization and industry and social pressure to use water in sustainable and environmentally sound way. The development of agricultural environment indicators is divided into 13 sectors, among which agricultural water use indicators include amount and intensity of agricultural water use, efficiency of agricultural water use, shortage or surplus of water use, water stress, etc.. Agricultural water use indicators provide basic data for sustainable and environmentally sound agricultural development, and also help policy decision makers to solve water shortage problems through water policy and water management measures by making the most of the total available water resources.

  • The study was carried out to improve and regulate the drinking water quality standard and drinking water quality monitoring substances. For the reliability and safety of finished water, It has been monitored for trace organic and inorganic compounds of 333 in finished water of water treatment plants during 1989 to 2003. As a result of monitoring, 51 compounds were detected from 333 compounds, and it has been regulated the drinking water quality standard of 26 substances and 20 mitoring substance. Improvement and regulation method of the drinking water quality standard was performed by comparing and analyzing with detection concentration, detection frequency, risk assessment and foreign drinking water quality standard.

  • To investigate corrosivity characteristics of raw water in Korea, Langelier index (LI) of 30 multi-regional water treatment plants (WTPs) were evaluated. Annual average values of LI at 30 WTPs were all negative, which means raw water in Korea is very corrosive. LI results for 4 major rivers showed that raw water from Han and Nakdong had relatively high values compared to those of Sumjin and Keum. On the other hand, LI values of raw water from the tributaries of four major rivers were relatively low presumably due to geological characteristics, and in some cases the values were less than -4.0 which means increase of LI is urgently needed to minimize red water problem. Based on the correlation results among LI and water quality parameters, pH, water temperature, calcium concentration were confirmed as major components for LI. Therefore, pH and calcium concentration control is an effective method for the improvement of LI in water treatment processes.

  • Water quality data for 10 years (2000~2009) from about 826 reservoirs that are operated as a agricultural water quality survey network were analyzed in order to seek water quality management plan based on physical and chemical characteristics of agricultural reservoirs. The 95% reservoirs that exceed agricultural water quality standard of Chl-a (35mg/ $m^3$) had effective water depth shallower than 5m. The reason was that the reservoirs had more inflows of nutrient salts from the watershed, bigger surface water area of weak structure to algae occurrence. As the reservoirs of effective water depth shallower than 5m cover 49% of benefited area for irrigation, it is critical for agricultural water quality management of the reservoirs. The water quality of reservoir with shallower than 5m effective water depth was worse than reservoir with deeper than 5m effective water depth. Therefore, it is desirable that effective water depth of reservoirs make more than 5m for water quality management by building the bank higher and dredging the bottom of reservoirs.

  • Many advanced treatment processes have been introduced to WTPs, however, the consumer confidence on tap water is still low and the percentage of drinking water directly from the tap is less than 2 %. One of the methods to improve the credibility of tap water is to introduce a drinking water certification system. By introducing the system, water treatment processes can be optimized, which in turn, can significantly improve drinking water quality. In this paper, 6 water quality parameters(i.e., turbidity, CT, residual chlorine, geosmin, 2-MIB, Mn) which have significant influences on tap water quality and consumer confidence were identified, and their recommended guidelines were proposed. 3-Star or 5-Star certification can be awarded to the WTPs which have met the certification criteria. The drinking water certification system can be carried out as a voluntary program among drinking water suppliers.
