  • Dyeing wastewaters are the most problematic wastewater in textile industries and also, growing amounts of waste fibers in carpet industries have concerned environmental specialists. Among different treatment methods, membrane filtration processes as energy-efficient and compatible way, were utilized for several individual problems. In this research, novel hybrid membranes were prepared by waste fibers of mechanical carpets as useful resource of membrane matrix and industrial graphite powder as filler to eliminate Chrysophenine GX from dyeing wastewater. These membranes were expected to be utilized for first stage of hybrid membrane filtration process including (adsorption-ultrafiltration) and nanofiltration in Kashan Textile Company. For scaling of membrane filtration process, fouling mechanism of these membranes were recognized and explained by the use of genetic algorithm, as well. The graphite increased rejection and diminished permeate flux at low concentration but in high concentration, the performance was significantly worsened. Among all hybrid membranes, 18% wt. waste fibers-1% wt. graphite membrane had the best performance and minimum fouling. The maximum pore size of this optimum membrane was ranged from 16.10 to 18.72 nm.

  • Marine beach sands with bacterial pathogens may cause increased outcomes of illness among beachgoers in summer. In this study, pyrosequencing of 16S ribosomal DNAs extracted from 12 beach sands was performed to understand how the environmental factors of wastewaters or human wastes affected the distribution of bacterial communities at the beach of North Gyeongsang province (Yeongdeok and Pohang counties) in the middle of October. It was found that Acidobacteria were dominantly distributed in the sands near the clean seawaters, Proteobacteria in the sands near the river waters, Cyanobacteria in the sands near the wastewaters, and Bacteroidetes in the sands near the beach park. Other phyla groups such as Actinobacteria, Chlorobi, Deferribacteres, Deinococcus-thermus, Firmicutes, Gemmatimonadetes, Nitrospirae, and/or Verrucomicrobia were distributed at low relative abundance (1-5%).

  • This study was performed to obtain optimal conditions for reduction of color in dye wastewaters using coagulation-sedimentation processes with redox reactions. The reduction of color as well as organic matters variation was observed after coagulation-sedimentation processes using FeSO$_4$ $\cdot$ 7H$_2$O and NaOCl. Coagulation-redox reaction was done with the dose of Coagulant and oxidant at various pH values. Redox reaction was done through jar-mixing and aeration. The results of study were as follows: 1. In the coagulation-sedimentation processes using FeSO$_4$ $\cdot$ 7H$_2$O, color reduction was heigher at pH 3. With variance of dosage of FeSO$_4$ $\cdot$ 7H$_2$O, color reduction was higher at 250 mg/l. When coagulation-sedimentation using FeSO$_4$ $\cdot$ 7H$_2$O 250 mg/l was added at pH 3, the reduction of color, COD$_{Mn}$, and COD$_{Cr}$ showed 47.6%, 21.3% and 22.1%, respectively. 2. When NaOCI was added at level of 100 ppm in raw wastewater at pH 3, the reduction of color, COD$_{Mn}$, and COD$_{Cr}$ showed 30.2%, 5.5% and 6.2%, respectively. 3. After coagulation-sedimentation processes by addition of FeSO$_4$ $\cdot$ 7H$_2$O, when NaOCl was added at level of 250 mg/l in supernant, color reduction was 47.8% in aeration and 37.5% in jar-mixing. 4. Color reduction by aeration was higher than that by jar-mixing.

  • Briquette ashes, one of important solid wastes in Korea, have relatively high compression strength in spite of their low density, and provide sufficient surface area and some adsorption capacity. Results of this research show that a fixed-film biological process using briquette ashes as media can accomplish BOD removal efficiencies in treating organic wastewaters such as alcoholic waste, diluted nightsoil and sewage , and formula can be derived to determine the effluent BOD concentrations by superficial or volumetric organic loadings. Settling tanks may be required because effluent SS concentration is deteriorated due to the SS in influent or due to the slough-off of slime layer on the media when briquette ashes are utilized for a long period.

  • The effects of operating parameters on performance of upflow anaerobic sludge blanket(UASB). anaerobic filter(AF), and two-stage anaerobic sludge bed filter (ASBF) bioreactors in treating swine wastewater were evaluated by operating the lab-scale bioreactors upto hydraulic retention time(HRT) of 1 day and organic loading rate (OLR) of $5.1kg-COD/m^3{\cdot}d$ for 200 days. Swine wastewaters of which characteristics were affected by types of hog raising and seasons contained high concentrations of COD, SS, and ammonia. Inoculation of the bioreactors with waste sludge from anaerobic treatment facility of local municipal wastewater treatment plant was effective in developing biomass in the bioreactors. Acclimation period of the bioreactors with swine wastewaters required approximately 40 days, but that for AF and two-stage ASBF, which were filled with media, was faster than VASB. The bioreactors showed high and stable COD removal efficiency of 77~91% at influent T-N concentrations of 370~800mg/L but low and unstable COD removal efficiency of 24~94% at influent T-N concentrations of 760~1,310mg/L. It is essential to remove ammonia prior to anaerobic treatment since the concentrations of ammonia in swine wastewaters showed toxic effects to methanogenic bacteria. The bioreactors were effective in treating swine wastewaters with COD removal efficiency of 78.9~81.5% and biogas generation rate of $0.39{\sim}0.59m^3/kg-COD_r$ at OLR of $1.1{\sim}2.2kg-COD/m^3{\cdot}d$: however, an increase of OLR by reducing HRT and increasing influent COD caused decrease of COD removal efficiency. The extent of decrease in COD removal efficiency was higher in UASB than AF and two-stage ASBF. AF and two-stage ASBF anaerobic bioreactors were effective in treating varing characteristics of swine wastewaters since they showed high and stable COD removal efficiency at high OLR due to effective retention of biomass by media and staging.

  • For safe and easy disposal of prochloraz wastewaters after used as rice seed disinfectant in Korean farms, this experiment was carried out. By addition of several agricultural materials commonly utilizing in farmers, removal effect of prochloraz from waste solution was also investigated. When rice seeds after soaking in diluted prochloraz solution were rinsed with water several times, prochloraz was removed $9.2\sim10.6%$ at the first rinse and less than 3 % at the fourth rinse. A half life of prochloraz was $4\sim5$ days in aqueous system. Hydrolysis of prochloraz was more rapidly in alkali solution than neutral and acidic one at $25^{\circ}C$ and $35^{\circ}C$. By the irradiation under $5530J/cm^2$ using xenone lamp, prochloraz was photo-degraded to 87.7% in aqueous system. The removal efficiency of prochloraz by addition of several agricultural materials were as follows: 93.6% by lime, 90.7% by composed pig manure, 89.4% by activated charcoal, 78.0% by straw ash, 70.3% by sandy loam soil, 47.0% by zeolite and 24.1 % by rice straw. When prochloraz solution was sprayed on the field soil, it was dissipated upto 90% within 35 days.

  • Currently in Korea, standard operating procedure for the analyses of phenolic compounds in water is the spectrometric comparison of colors developed by 4-amino antipyrin with phenolic compounds. It is however that this method cannot identify individual compound and that some phenolic compounds do not react with 4-amino antipyrin. Spectrometric determinations of phenolic compounds were compared with chromatographic analyses of gas chromatography (GC) and high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) of various phenolic compounds. Individual phenolic compounds could be determined by both chromatographic methods but HPLC methods were more precise with lower detection levels in general.

  • This study concerns with the reduction of the COD and deceleration of dyeing wastewater from DAEGU city area by ozonation. The COD reduction by ozonation follows near linear relationships versus ozonation time, temperature and concentration. The color in dyeing wastewater and of dyes can he strikingly reduced as the water is quasi colorless after ozone treatment. COD reduction rate of wastewater was found not to be dependented on pH, however, high temperature gave better results, although economically not feasible. The ozonation of dyeing wastewater can give good results when dyes, scouring agent and sticking agents were pre-separated.
