The surge in the oil prices, increasing global population, climate change, and waste management problems are the major issues which have led to the development of biofuels from lignocellulosic wastes. Cellulosic or second generation (2G) bioethanol is produced from lignocellulosic biomass via pretreatment, hydrolysis, and fermentation. Pretreatment of lignocellulose is of considerable interest due to its influence on the technical, economic and environmental sustainability of cellulosic ethanol production. In this study, furniture waste sawdust was subjected to alkaline peroxide (H2O2) for the production of reducing sugars. Sawdust was pretreated at different concentrations from 1-3% H2O2 (v/v) loadings at a pH of 11.5 for a residence time of 15-240 min at 50, 75 and 90 ℃. Optimum pretreatment conditions, such as time of reaction, operating temperature, and concentration of H2O2, were varied and evaluated on the basis of the amount of total reducing sugars produced. It was found that the changes in the amount of lignin directly affected the yield of reducing sugars. A maximum of 50% reduction in the lignin composition was obtained, which yielded a maximum of 75.3% total reducing sugars yield and 3.76 g/L of glucose. At optimum pretreatment conditions of 2% H2O2 loading at 75 ℃ for 150 min, 3.46 g/L glucose concentration with a 69.26% total reducing sugars yield was obtained after 48 hr. of the hydrolysis process. Pretreatment resulted in lowering of crystallinity and distortion of the sawdust after the pretreatment, which was further confirmed by XRD and SEM results.

At the Intergovernmental Meeting held in 1972, the London Convention was adopted to prevent marine pollution from dumping of wastes and other matter. After that, at the special meeting held at the Headquarters of the International Maritime Organization in 1996, the London Convention was revised to consider advances in technology of treatment and disposal of wastes and to reflect changes in understanding of marine environment and then the London Protocol was concluded. The London Protocol states more concrete management system for ocean dumping than the London Convention and also provides that the Meeting of Contracting Parties shall establish those procedures and mechanisms necessary to assess and promote compliance with the Protocol. With the London Protocol in force since 24 March 2006, the Meeting of Contracting Parties adopted the 'Compliance Procedures and Mechanisms (CPM) pursuant to Article 11 of the 1996 Protocol to the London Convention 1972' and established the Compliance Group in 2007. According to the CPM, members of the Compliance Group shall be nominated by Contracting Parties, based on equitable and balanced geographic representation of the five Regional Groups of the United Nations, and elected by the Meeting of Contracting Parties. In 2009, the Republic of Korea nominated a member of the Compliance Group to be subsequently elected by the Meeting of Contracting Parties with the approval of other states in Asia Group. Through the United Nations Regional Group System based on geographical identity or political affinity, Contracting Parties to the London Protocol are expected to form a voting bloc or to exchange information in meetings on the London Protocol. In this sense, it is noteworthy that the London Protocol introduced marine environmental management system for comprehensive prohibition of ocean dumping with exception of the so-called 'reverse-list' which had been earlier adopted by the 'Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North-East Atlantic, 1992 (OSPAR)' whose contracting parties belonged to Western European and Other States Group. In recent years, the jurisdiction of London Protocol has been extended to protect and preserve the marine environment from all sources of pollution. This will make the United Nations Regional Group System play more important roles in the activities associated with the London Protocol. For this reason, this article has considered characteristics of the United Nations Regional Group System and has analyzed influences of this Regional Group System in meetings on the London Protocol. This could provide preliminary information for the Republic of Korea to give due consideration to the United Nations Regional Group System on the activities associated with the London Protocol.
Landfill gas is a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide produced by the bacterial decomposition of organic wastes, and it is considered to produce bad smells and pollute the environment. Economic trials and the developments of landfill gas, as an alternative energy resource, become known at the recent years, Resource development of landfill gas, which is managed by Korea up to now, is for the most part generation using gas engine. Medium BTU and High BTU are considered for the power generation as well. Most income of generation using gas engine is selling charge through a power plant. Expecting to manage the power plant for up to 10 years, the analysis based on revenue and expenditure shows when the unit price is 65.2 Won and the operating rate reaches 90%, it is possible to be into the black in 2012 without considering additional financial expense, It was also analyzed that the profit at a unit price of 85 Won under the anticipated rising unit price by the operating rate of 71% is larger than at the operating rate of 90% under limited unit price of 65.2 Won. It means to manage the power plant at a unit price of 65.2 Won and the operating rate must be higher than 90% for economic logicality. If we assume that the operating rate is 90% and it increases the unit price, the unit price must be higher than 85 Won for the management of a power plant. Analysis of changing a unit price, however, might be expected to have a gradual rise of prices. If there is no price rising and additional income related to CDM(Clean Development Mechanism) and emission trading upon Kyoto protocol, the management of a power plant using gas engine will get financial difficulties because of many operating expenses. However, since landfill gas is considered as a worthy energy resource for the guarantee of sustainable development and for the equity between recent generation and future generation, the development of it must be accomplished by the government's additional supporting and efforts under the interest of all stakeholder who are involved.
Since high concentrations of N, P, and organic C cause the excessive eutrophication in water systems, the control of nutrient export from agricultural nonpoint sources has become important. This study was conducted to estimate discharges of N, P, and organic C from a small agricultural watershed of the upper Imgo stream in Youngchun, Kyongbuk. Of the total area(1.420ha), 25% was agricultural land including paddy, upland and orchards and most of the remainder was forest. The resident population in the watershed was 194 in 80 households and relatively small numbers of livestocks including cow were raised. Mean concentrations of nutrients in the stream water were 4.95, 0.80, 6.72, 0.07 and 2.52mg/L for $NO_3-N$, $NH_4-N$, Total N, Total P and COD respectively. Annual discharges in 1997 were 28,991kg of $NO_3-N$. 3,010kg of $NH_4-N$, 37,006kg of Total N. 590kg of Total P, and 29,138kg of COD. There was a strong positive relationship between stream flow and precipitation, and also most of the nutrient discharges occurred in the rainy season (May to August). Since there was no any other industries in the watershed, agricultural practices and sewage from the resident households, forest runoff and livestock wastes were the major sources of NPS discharges. A combination of management options, including management of soil erosion and fertilizer application, could lead to reductions in nutrient exports.
In order to find out the reasons for the excessive accumulation of certain fertilizer elements in arable land in Korea, which may be a detrimental factor for her sustainable agriculture in the future, total requirement of fertilizers were estimated from the huge number of soil test data obtained throughout the country using the fertilizer requirement models based on the soil analysis data and the concepts of multi nutrient factor balance or starter fertiliazer. The total fertilizer requirements estimated based on the present soil fertility status were much less than those estimated from the suspected cropping area of various crops cultivated depending on the conventional fertilizer recommendation for each crops or the actual amount of fertilizer elements consumed through National Agricultural Cooporative Federation(NACF). The excessive accumulation of certain fertilizer elements in arable land in Korea must be due to excessively high dose of chemical fertilizers as well as those farm wastes such as animal wasts produced unexpectedly in large amounts or crop residues. And it is suggested that the improved fertilizer recommendation must be developed in consideration both with the soil fertility status and the amounts of nutrient removal by each crop, and that the high analyzed complex fertilizers commonly used by farmers must ugently be developed in a form containing low P and K with Mg and slow release type N for the better balanced management practices of soil fertility by farmers arid for their practices of sustainable agriculture.

The analysis of polychlorodibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorodibenzo furans(PCDFs) was performed by using four different gas chromatographic columns (SP-2331, DB-5, DB-17 and DB-DIOXIN). The data reported is pertaining to flue gas, fly ash, ambient air, soil and fish. The difference in quantification of samples according to four columns was observed, it was noted that major difference was observed in the flue gas when compared with soil, fly ash, ambient air and fish. The quantification of the same samples according to four columns it was also found that DB-5 column have the highest concentration whereas SP-2331 column showed the lowest concentration. The quantification of DB-17 column for 1,2,3,6,7,8-HxCDF was found to be twice and three times higher when compared with other columns, whereas the quantification of DB-DIOXIN column for 1,2,3,7,8-PeCDD was also found to be over estimated twice when compared with other columns.

In this study, traditional treatment scenario of food wastes that collected and transported food waste is recycled in large treatment facilities and suggested treatment scenario of onsite zero discharge system that food waste is treated in housing complex were supposed. The scenarios were compared and analyzed by capital expenditure, oil consumption, $CO_2$ emission quantity, operating expenditure and management expenses. The capital expenditure, oil consumption and $CO_2$ emission quantity of small scale dispersion dealing method is the lowest compared to traditional treatment method. As a results, it is possible to obtain the effect that operating expenditure was reduced by 91% and management expenses was reduced by 40% with suggested treatment method. The treatment method that have low capital expenditure is tend to lower oil consumption and $CO_2$ emission quantity. The small scale dispersion dealing method have the lowest capital expenditure, oil consumption and $CO_2$ emission quantity and the linked method with sewage treatment have the highest expenditure and $CO_2$ emission quantity. Eventually, the optimal model of onsite zero discharge system in housing complex is small scale dispersion dealing method.

Deconstruction of the building must be applied firstly in order to improve recycling and reuse of construction wastes. In this study have done a case study for deconstruction of an apartment. All construction waste(CW) which will be generated during deconstruction was examined in each part of the building. Because drawing did not exist in most of the old building, we drew up floor plans of buildings. After analyzing these drawings, estimated quantities of CW. It was measured working time of labor and equipments for deconstruction and general demolition on each building of the apartment. In addition, it was proposed in the volume and weight per unit after analyzing detailed measurement of CW which was generated in the process of deconstruction and traditional demolition. It suggested recovery rate at a site, volume and weight conversion factors, and waste basic unit per area that based on the results of comparative analysis on the amount of CW which is calculated from drawing and generated at a site. These factors will be used fundamental materials for estimating quantities and treatment cost of CW, and scheduling of works.

Currently, reconstruction and remodeling are conducted to improve the performance of aged housing. Recently reconstruction has caused many problems such as wastes generation, wasting resources and real estate speculation, remodeling is drawing attention. Accordingly, remodeling business for aged housings gradually increasing, but the use of scheduling method not considering characteristics of remodeling deters construction in some construction types. Especially, in case of dismantling construction, the dismantling is delayed since the scheduling method not considering characteristics of remodeling is used. In case of remodeling, dismantling construction is ahead of other processes, if the dismantling construction is delayed, whole construction will be delayed and if speedy construction is conducted, the costs for remodeling will increase. Furthermore, existing remodeling for aged housing has been for rahmen(crossbeam and pillar) structure apartments, but since most apartments to be remodeled are wall-slab structure where dismantling takes a lot of weight, it is highly possible the dismantling construction is delayed. Thus, this paper is to establish scheduling method for the dismantling construction reflecting characteristic of remodeling to prevent delay of dismantling construction for remodeling of aged housing with wall-slab structure.

Because a procedure is complicated and various related parties participate in the redevelopment and reconstruction project, it can be extended to diverse disputes when the relation with the related parties is smoothly adjusted. In particular, when the dispute occurs in a phase of occupancy after the complete construction, the regional residents-centric association must give up many rights of invisible parts caused by the construction company's profit maximization because they are short of professionalism about the business. Accordingly, this study is aimed at providing the construction project manager's dispute and claim process for responding to the dispute or claim reasonably and for obtaining the client's (association) rights for the reconstruction project, and at developing the checklist for obtaining the necessary documents by each phase, when the dispute or claim is made by the association against the construction company after the completion of construction. Through this study, the association can obtain the related documents in advance and can implement the reasonable response data when the dispute or claim occurs due to it. Also, it will enable the construction manager to analyze the project costs reasonably and will reduce the estimated wastes. That is, the work efficiency is expected to be improved.
