This study was carried out to provide fundamental data for reuse of resources and prevention of environmental pollution Actual states of environmental pollution by biological production facilities were investigated. Various pollution loads and quantity of wastes from greenhouse and animal housings estimated. In greenhouse contents of investigation were wastes of plastic cover, noise of heater and fan, air pollutant of heater, and wastes of soilless culture system, etc. In animal housings, those were actual state of livestock waste treatment and reuse, pollutant mass unit discharge, noise pollution, and malodorant, etc. The main pollutants discharged from greenhouses were wastes of plastic cover, rockwool, and waste fluid of nutrient solution. Developments of waste disposal methods for plastic cover and rockwool are required. And recycle technique of nutrient solution for soilless culture should be developed and propagated. With the buildup of legal control, pollutant mass discharged from livestock wastes are, on the decrease. The other side, reuse of livestock excreta increased. Most animal housings are located near the dwelling house. Malodorant and noise from animal housings have bad effects on the rural living conditions. So developments of integrated complex for small scale livestock farms are required.

In order to analyze the impact of fine dust generated from a construction waste intermediate processing site on the surrounding areas, diverse types of samples were collected from inside the site and surrounding areas. The impact analysis results of samples are as follows. (1) Compared to the air quality management standards by the Ministry of Environment, the concentration of fine dust within the site was 30 to 46% for PM10 and 14 to 42% for PM2.5, which was not much different from the general air quality level. (2) It was found that PM10 within the site may have a partial effect on the air quality, but when the blocking facilities in the site, wheel washing facilities at vehicle entry and exit route, and sprinkler during working were maintained, the impact on the nearby area was not high. (3) In the case of PM2.5, its concentration was influenced more by the exhaust fumes from work vehicles than fine dust generated during construction waste processing. Since the PM2.5 concentrations in the site and surrounding area were not much different from the general air quality, there was little correlation with the work impact of construction waste intermediate processing sites. (4) Pb, an indicator of heavy metal components, was within 50ng/m3 in all three sites, which was 10% of the domestic management standard and equivalent to the general air quality level. The complaints from residents in nearby areas were filed using indicators based on visual and experiential information in their daily lives, so even if the survey results of environmental impact by the construction intermediate waste processing site are lower than the standard, nearby residents can feel it better than such numerical information. Therefore, specific activities to reduce find dusts should be continuously continued.

Limited landfill area and finance as well as a large generation of food wastes, have called for systematic approaches towards potential cost savings. In this study, the regional management system of food wastes generated from the residential and commercial sources was considered in three cities bounded each other; Changwon, Masan, and Jinhae city. Total thirteen alternatives were established and compared by applying the WRAP (Waste Resource Allocation Program). The following results were obtained: 1. While relatively small amounts were generated from the commercial sources such as cafeteria, restaurants, and market facilities, almost 80% of food wastes were generated from the residential sources. 2. Unit costs for food waste management in three cities were different according to their present situation such as the type and location of major generation sources and treatment facilities. Especially, the highest cost appeared in Jinhae city due to the most expensive construction of coastal landfill site. 3. Considering proper revenue, the whole conversion of food waste into animal feed was selected as the optimal alternative and represented 60% to 74% of the management cost of the whole landfill alternative in all cities. Comparing the other alternatives, composting of food waste was more economical than landfill alternative and the incineration was the most expensive alternative. 4. Some of the regional management systems using common food waste processing facilities together in three cities showed to be more economical than the single management system. Therefore, more detailed research for the regional management systems of food waste was recommended.
The water quality in the rural areas is degrading due to a variety of causes such as the increase of the urban sewage and industrial wastes, the disposal of solid wastes, the growth of livestock waste, the growth of leisure facilities, the establishment of agricultural industry estates and etc. The water pollutants are scarce while the effluent is increasing from wide scattered sources. The technology specifically designed for the rural wastes water treatment plant needs to be implemented with improvement of agricultural water quality. 1. An integrated management measures against water pollution sources. The prevention of water pollution is the best measures in the environmental pollution. Hence, the most effective measures needs to be against the sources. Small-scale water treatment plants needs to be constructed in each village in the rural areas. As for the industrial effluent, the effluent discharge needs to be strictly monitored. Government subsidy for the establishment of treatment plant for livestock wastes is necessary. 2. The establishment of national-wide network for agricultural water quality. The network for agricultural water quality have been operated to conserve the agricultural water quality, and to develop management policies by the assessment of water pollution in the rural areas. The results of agricultural water quality network indicates that the water quality is degrading not only around urban areas but also in the distant rural areas, and the water quality at the pumping stations and weirs is worse than that of reservoirs. 3. The legal, systematic, and technical approaches for the agricultural water quality management. The actions currently implemented for the improvement of agricultural water quality involve temporary measures such as the improvement of irrigation facilities. These contingency measures are not effective in the long-term, and sometimes bring secondary pollution. Therefore, integrated measures covering the whole water environment such as the flow, quality, river morphology, aquatic ecosystem, and the surrounding environment, need be invented and implemented. Besides, the legal, systematic, and technical frameworks for the management are not fully established so far. The technology for the treatment of rural water pollution should be refined afterwards, and the research for the development of rural waste water treatment plant should be carried out.

Finding the optimal solution in the river water quality management system is very hard with the non-linearity of the water quality model. Many suggested methods for that using the linear programming, non-linear programming and dynamic programming, are failed to give an optimal solution of sufficient accuracy and satisfaction. We studied a method to find a solution optimizing the river water quality management in the aspect of the efficiency and the cost of the waste water treatment facilities satisfying the water Quality goals. In the suggested method, we use the QUAL2E water quality model and the genetic algorithm. A brief result of the project to optimize the water quality management in the Youngsan river is presented.
A questionary survey was conducted to investigate citizen's attitude to the treatment of food wastes in Miryang city. In this study, collection effectives was 87.8%, as 281 individuals among 320 individuals. After volume-base charge system, 86.8% of answers perform source separation and 60.9% of respondents separate everything of recycle goods. The majority of respondents discharge food waste using standard envelope. The biggest problems for deposition of the food wastes are offensive odor and worm for reasons of sanitation. Almost citizens think that the period of deposition suit from two days to three days. More than 90.0% of the citizens recognized that compost products made from food wastes and recognition of the people for the composting and composting facilities was affirmative. Majority of the respondents thought that the administration and the provincial government need activity publicity for the source separation fixations of the food wastes.
In this study, we sought to establish a vessel-discharge pollutant-treatment system recommended by IMO by first investigating advanced facilities overseas to help us understand and evaluate our domestic facility and needs. IMO recommends the installation and operation of port pollutant-storage facilities to adequately treat pollutants emitted by ships entering the port, and we reviewed the registration and operation of these facilities in IMO member countries, focusing on the IIII Code. Due to recent environmental regulations, additional facilities are required to treat the washing water discharged from equipment such as scrubbers mounted on the ship so pollutant-storage facilities must be established. Currently, Korea's ship-discharged wastes are being moved from ports to land waste-treatment plants, and their quantity and properties are not being monitored. Therefore, in this study, we improved monitoring of the discharged pollutants and investigated the proper arrangement of pollutant storage facilities as recommended by IMO. The system we established can help provide smooth service to incoming ships - and appropriate treatment of pollutants and will greatly benefit international maritime operations.
An efficient management system of mercury-containing waste was designed by reviewing the management and treatment of spent fluorescent lamp in Korea and foreign countries. According to Waste Management Act in Korea, mercury-containing wastes from households are classified as municipal solid wastes even though mercury-containing wastes pose hazardous risks. In general, hence, mercury-containing wastes from households are not being managed properly because those wastes from households were not classified as specific wastes (or hazardous wastes). Some mercury-containing wastes are managed as a mandatory target item in waste charge system and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system under Act on Promotion for Saving and Recycling of Resources. An efficient management plan of mercury-containing wastes can be derived with an improved collection system, designating disposal sites and advanced treatment facilities for spent fluorescent lamps. Finally, the role of each agent involved from collection to disposal of mercury-containing wastes was suggested to establish the efficient management system for mercury-containing waste.

The study aims to identify the generation and treatment of fishery by-products in Korea and suggests future directions and strategies for their eco-friendly utilization and industrialization. First, the study focuses on the identification of the generation and their treatment in Korea since merely few study were conducted and they did not provide enough information regarding the overall generation and treatment at the national level. According to the estimation, Korea generates 800 thousand to 1,200 thousand tones of fishery by-product every year. The fishery by-products generated at large seafood markets and processing facilities are used or processed as fish meal and feed, but those generated from households and small seafood restaurants are currently treated as food waste. In addition, inadequately treated fishery by-products cause various problems such as spoiling urban landscape, creating odor and incubating pest. After identifying the generation and treatment of fishery by-products, the study suggests directions for the formulation of infrastructure for transition into resource circulation society, minimization of dumped waste and their eco-friendly recycling as resources, diversification of recycled goods and development into a high-value added industry. Finally, the study suggests detailed strategies for the directions such as establishment of legal and institutional foundation, separation of fishery by-products from wastes, development of technology tailored for commercialization, introduction of pilot projects for industrialization and cultivation of social enterprises.
Since the ocean dumping of organic wastes is prohibited under the London Convention, the need for land treatment of food waste leachate (FWL) has significantly been growing in recent years. This study was conducted to use thermal solubilization to turn FWL into a form that can easily be degraded during the anaerobic digestion process, thereby reducing the percentage of solids and increasing the production of methane. To derive the optimal operating conditions of thermal solubilization, a laboratory-scale reactor was built and operated. The optimal reaction temperature and time turned out to be $190^{\circ}C$ and 90 min, respectively. The BMP test showed a methane production of 465 mL $CH_4/g$$COD_{Cr}$ and a biodegradation rate of 90.1%. The production of methane rose by about 15%, compared with no the application of thermal solubilization. To reduce the solid content of FWL and improve the methane production, therefore, it may be helpful to apply thermal solubilization to pre-treatment facilities for anaerobic digestion.
