55 zooplankton taxa including 35 copepoda were observed in the Uldolmok waterway during the sampling period from August 2003 to April 2004. Neritic species showed the seasonal species fluctuation, and oceanic warm-water species occurred throughout the year. The number of taxa tended to increase at the flood tide from low tide to high tide, and to decrease at the ebb tide from high tide to low tide. Therefore, species composition of zooplankton in the Uldolmok waterway seemed to be affected by the inflow of oceanic waters with oceanic species all the year round. Total abundance of zooplankton ranged from 104 (February 2004) to 2,717 indiv. $m^{-3}$ (August 2003). According to the tidal cycle, the change of total abundance was more irregular and variable in November 2003 and February 2004 than August 2003 and April 2004. In August 2003 and April 2004, total abundance was low at the strong tide, and was high at low and high tide when tidal current was weak. Average abundances of dominant species such as Paracalanus indicus, Cirripedia nauplii and Acartia hongi were on the order of twice higher at ebb tide than flood tide. However, their abundances were also subject to wide fluctuation within flood tide and ebb tide. The changes of environmental parameters such as water temperature, salinity and chlorophyll-a concentration were negligible along the tidal periods in the Uldolmok waterway. Therefore, the advection, transfer and loss of zooplankton population derived from strong tidal current and eddy formed by the local difference of tidal velocity lead temporal variation of zooplankton community more complex and variable in the Uldolmok waterway.
A survey was conducted to analyze water masses and spatial distributions of phytoplankton communities at 15 stations on the surface and chlorophyll a maximum layers (CML) in the western South Sea of Korea from September 8 to 9, 2021. As a result, water masses were classified into Coastal Waters (CW) with relatively low salinity, the Tsushima Warm Current (TWC) with high water temperature and high salinity, and mixed waters (MW) showing a mixture of these two water masses. Turbidity showed high concentration in both the surface and CML. The chlorophyll a concentration was as low as 0.90±0.43 ㎍ L-1 in the surface, more than 1.1 ㎍ L-1 in CW, around 1.0 ㎍ L-1 in MW, and less than 0.5 ㎍ L-1 in the TWC. CML was 1.64±0.54 ㎍ L-1. Regarding species composition of phytoplankton communities, there were 57 species in 31 genera(diatoms, 57.8%; dinoflagellates, 35.1%; and other phytoflagellates, 7.1%). The phytoplankton standing crop had 4.6±7.6 cells mL-1 in the surface, more than 30 cells mL-1 in the CW, 2-5 cells mL-1 in the MW, and less than 2 cells mL-1 in the TWC. CML was slightly higher than the surface with a variation of 5.7±8.4 cells mL-1. Dominant species were found to be Rhizosolenia flagilissima f. flagilissima, Skeletonema costatum-ls, and Nitzschia sp./ small size in the surface. For the CML Rh. flagilisima f. flagilissima showed a dominance of 12.0%. For the surface, the diversity variation was 2.36±0.40, which was high for TWC but low for MW. For CML, the diversity variation was 2.29±0.52, which was slightly lower than that of the surface. The dominance in the surface was 0.50±0.15, with a fluctuation range of more than 0.5 in MW and less than 0.5 in the TWC, which was different from the diversity. According to correlation analysis and principal component analysis (PCA), the presence of phytoplankton standing crops was high in CW but low in MW and TWC. That is, phytoplankton communities in early autumn were strongly affected by the expansion and mixing of water masses in western South Sea.
This study was conducted to analyze the ecological environment of the 53 uninhabitable islands of Jeju for the management formulation. The result of the Pearson correlation analysis were 0.647(p<0.01) for herbs, 0.585(p<0.01) for trees and 0.762 (p<0.01) for animals which means that there is a high correlation between the size of the forests in the uninhabitable islands and the species diversity of herbs, trees and animals. For the regression modeling to predict the forest area, the R value was 0.899 and the $R^2$ was 0.803 with 79.7% statistical significance. This study also classified the uninhabited islands based on its forest area into two classes, with a forests area of 0.5ha and with a forest of approximately 12ha. The importance value of the biodiversity in the uninhabited islands was also evaluated using DEA and the islands with higher importance, namely DMU14(0.941), DMU36(0.964), DMU44(1.000) and DMU45(0.903) were recommended to be managed. It was observed that uninhabited islands with forests had a mean importance value of 0.439 which is higher as compared to the uninhabited islands without forests with 0.096. This verified that there is close relationship between forest and biodiversity.
Qualitative and quantitative phytoplankton samples collected during a cruise in the southeastern sea of Korea in September 1981, were analysed. A total of 185 species of phytoplankters were identified in the present study. Of the numbers 14 species of diatoms and 56 dinoflagellate forms were found. The rest were 3 silicoslagellate forms, a cryptomonad and a euglenoid each. On the bases of the analyses of the phytoplankton communities, two vegetation areas were recognized. It is demonstrated that the extent of each vegetation area largely depends on hydrographical features. In southeastern coastal waters, the vegetation was fairly rich, and consisted of small celled diatoms and minute flagellates. In the northern part of the area, abundant phytoplanktons were present consisting of various diatoms and dimofalgellates. The size of standing stock of phytoplankton was compared with hydrography and the specific composition of phytoplankton. The importance of mixing between the Tsushima warm current water and North Korean cold water in distributing phytoplankton stocks was stressed.

Seasonal variation in species composition and abundance of shallow water fish from the Hakampo and Yeonpo beaches in Taean in the western coast of Korea were determined by the analysis of monthly samples collected by a beach seine from January to December, 2007. A total of 30 species, 964 individuals and 10,564.1 g of fish were collected from the Hakampo beach, and a total of 46 species, 4,447 individuals and 28,622.4 g of fish from the Yeonpo beach. The juveniles of coastal fish such as Chelon haematochelius, Paralichthys olivaceus, Repomucenus lunatus, Sebastes schlegelii and Takifugu niphobles were predominated in abundance. And the juveniles of pelagic migrants such as Konosirus punctatus, Sardinella zunasi and Engraulis japonicus were abundantly collected between summer and autumn. The fish collected were mainly composed of small-sized species and juveniles. C. haematochelius and migrant fish were young of the year, and commercially important fish such as S. schlegeli, P. olivaceus, Pleuronectes yokohamae and Hexagrammos otakii were 1 to 2 years old juveniles. It is considered that they use the shallow water as a nursery ground until they move out to the deeper water. The number of species and abundance were lower in the fine sand Hakamp beach than in the muddy sand Yeonpo beach where some Zostera marina were also found. In Yeonpo beach the adult of Gymnogobius mororanus preferred to live in the muddy shallow water and Syngnathus schlegeli living in the sea grass were also abundantly collected in spring in addition to resident fish and pelagic migrants in warm months. The resident species were more abundance in the Taean beach than in the beach located in the southern part of the west coast of Korea where the juveniles of pelagic migrants were more abundant.

High energy photons and mechanical energy produced by the process of star formation result in copious FIR molecular and atomic lines, which are important coolants of the system. Photons thermally or mechanically induced could dissociate water in the dense envelope to change relative abundances among the species of O, OH, and H2O. Here we analyze OH emission lines toward embedded young stellar objects (YSOs) observed as part of the Herschel open time key program, 'Dust, Ice, and Gas In Time (DIGIT)' in order to study the physical conditions of associated gas and the energy budget loaded on the OH line emission. According to our analysis of the Herschel/PACS spectra, OH emission peaks at the central spaxel in most of sources, but several sources show spatially extended emission structures. In the extended emission sources, the distribution of OH emission is correlated with that of [OI] emission and extended along the outflow directions. Considering the diversity of source properties, ratios between detected OH lines are relatively constant among sources. In addition, each OH line has strong correlation with bolometric luminosity. In order to determine the physical conditions of YSOs, we adopt several methods for the analysis of the OH lines: rotational diagram, non-LTE LVG analysis, and a 2-D PDR code. From the simple LVG analysis, we find that the thermal solution with the dense ( > $10^7cm^{-3}$) and warm ( ~ 100 K) OH gas reproduces the ratios of detected OH lines. However, our self-consistent PDR 2-D model, which can deal with the IR-pumping effect from the central protostar as well as the warm dust in situ, cannot fit the observational results, suggesting that an irradiated shock model is necessary for a better interpretation.
The sedimentary environments and biostratigrapy of the tidal sediments off the Mankyung-Dongjin River estuary were studied based on sedimentary facies and diatom assemblage analysis. Sediment facies from the five vibracores are mainly clay, silt, and sand facies. The clay and silty sediment facies are more dominant than the sandy facies, and contain diatom frustules. The frequency of the diatom frustules are rate to common, but not found in sandy sediment facies. Bigeneric structures such as burrow and non-bigeneric primary sedimentary structures such as laminated sand and mud or silt and mud couplets, flaser bedding, ripple-cross lamination are found in several stratigraphic levels of the sedimentary sequences. A total of 219 species and varieties, belonging to 61 genera has been identified in the present study. Among them, paralia sulcata is the most abundant species about 30 to 50% of the total diatom frustules. Another predominant species are Cyclotella striata. Thalassionema nitzschioides. Actinoptychus undulatus. Delphineis surirella, Raphoneis amphiceros. Most of the diatoms occurred in this study area are marine, marine-brackish water, and brackish water species, and are benthic and tychopelagic or meroplanktonic species. Also, most of the species are coastal to littoral and littoral to inner neritic species. The occurrences of freshwater species, about 1 to 5% is higher than that of the Namyang Bay tidal sediments. The ecological properties of the diatoms occurred in the study area and primary sedimentary structure such as flaser bedding ripple cross bedding indicate that the deposits are formed under coastal or littoral to subeditorial environments such as tidal zone which was subjected to the influenced of stream water and was more strongly influenced by temperate to warm water than cold water. The sedimentary environments have not been changed distinctively during the time of deposition. The vertical distribution pattern of diatoms in the study area is studied by Q-mode cluster Analysis using spss/pc+ (ver.4.0). The results show that the three cores (GE-3, GE-11, GE-12) are divided into two diatom assemblages, respectively. Biostratigraphic correlation using the data of Q-mode Cluster Analysis are attempt in this study.
Fish samples were collected by a trap net during 1981∼82 at the mouth of Cheonsu Bay to determine seasonal fluctuations in abundance and species composition. Examination of a series of trap net catches indicated that trap net data could be used, at least, for a qualitative analyses of a fish community and for a quantitative study of some pelagic fishes of Cheonsu Bay. Of the 64 species collected, a few temporal components predominated in abundance because of great seasonal fluctuations of water temperature. The early spring catch showed a low abundance value, and two cold weather seasonals, juvenile Enedrias fangi and Ammodytes personatus predominated in number and in weight. The number of species, abundance value in number and in biomass showed a peak in late spring when fishes move into bay for spawning and feeding after over-winterinig in the sea. Three pelagic species or warm weather seasonals, Harengula zunasi , Ammodytes personatus and Konosirus punctatus, predominated in abundance values. In this period night catch was significantly larger than day catch in terms of number of species, abundance in number and in weight Summer data showed a marked reduction of the number of species and abundance due to the loss of spawners probably by mortality or wide dipersion after spawning. A slight increase in abundance was observed in autumn by recruitment of the young-of-the-years. This catch was predominated by three juvenile fishes, H. zunasi, E. japonica and K. punctatus, which were the same species as in spring. The autumn catch showed no significant difference between day and night compositions.
A description of the "phytohydrography" in the southwestern waters of the East Sea is given from concurrent measurement of temperature, chlorophyll-a, nutrients, and phytoplankton and also from the calculated primary production during the two cruises in May and October, 1984. Past history of water mass is relatively well reflected in the distribution of phytoplankton species, but such a reflection is rarely shown in the distribution of physical and chemical parameters in general. Upper layer of the waters around Ul-gi and Gampo is typically characterized by the high chlorophyll-a, high primary production, and low nanofraction ratio due to the continuing supply of nutrients from the nutrient-rich cold water underneath. Water of Tsushima current shows poor standing crop in terms of cell numbers and chlorophyll-a concentrations, extremely high nanofraction ratio, and very low primary production. The overwhelming importance of the nanofraction is confirmed in phytoplankton cell numbers, chlorophyll-a concentration, and possibly enough in primary production. This emphasizes the exceptionally strong inflow of warm water into the study area from south among all the waters around the whole Korean peninsula.
From the Tertiary Yeonil Group distributed in Songra and Cheongha areas, the northern part of the Pohang Basin, nine archaeomonad species belonging to two genera, and other three types of chryophycean cysts considered as stomatocysts, five endoskeletal dinoflagellate species belonging to three genera and eighteen ebridian species belonging to eleven genera were identified. Based on above siliceous microfossil assemblages, the Yeonil Group is corresponded to Middle Miocene age. The group is correlated with the Calvert Formation (Maryland in USA) and the Hojuji Formation (in Central Japan) by its archaeomonad cysts. And, the group is correlated with the intervals of Actiniscus elongatus to Middle Hermesinella conata zones in Southwest Pacific region and of Spongebria miocenica to Middle Hermesineila schulzii zones in $V{\o}ring$ Plateau, Norwegian Sea, based on the ebridian assemblages of the group. From the chrysophycean cyst including archaeomonad, endoskeletal dinoflagellate and ebridian assemblages in the Yeonil Group of the study area, it is inferred that cold water masses dominated during the deposition oi the group with occasional warm water. The upper part of the group might be somewhat colder than the lower one of the group in depositional condition. In addition, minute chrysopycean cysts considered as stomatocysts suggest the influence of fresh or brackish water during the deposition of the group.
