Immersed boundary method (IBM) is the most effective method to overcome the disadvantage of LBM (Lattice Boltzmann Method) related to the limitation of the grid shape. IBM also make LBM possible to simulate flow over complex shape of obstacle without any treatment on the curved boundary. In the research, IBLBM was used to perform LBM simulation of a flow over a moving circular cylinder to determine the flow feature and aerodynamics characteristic of the cylinder. To ascertain the applicability of IBLBM on the moving obstacle near the wall, it was first simulated for the case of the flow over a fixed circular cylinder in a channel and the results were compared against the solution of moving cylinder in the channel using IBLBM. The simulations were performed in a moderate range of Reynolds number at each moving cylinder to identify the flow feature and aerodynamic characteristics of circular cylinder in a channel. The drag and lift coefficients of the cylinder were calculated from the simulation results. We have numerically confirmed that the critical Reynolds number for vortex shedding is Re=50 and the result is the same as the case of fixed cylinder. As the cylinder approaching to a wall (${\gamma}<2.5$), the 2nd vortex is developed by interacting with the wall boundary-layer vorticity. When the cylinder is very closed to the wall, ${\gamma}<0.6$, the cylinder acts like blockage to block the flow between the cylinder and wall so that the vortex developed on the upper cylinder elongated and time averaged lifting and drag coefficients abruptly increase.
Feedwater heaters of many nuclear power plants have recently experienced severe wall thinning damage, which will increase as operating time progresses. Several nuclear power plants in Korea have experienced wall thinning damage in the area around the impingement baffle - installed downstream of the high pressure turbine extraction steam line - inside number 5A and 5B feedwater heaters. At that point, the extracted steam from the high pressure turbine is two phase fluid at high temperature, high pressure, and high speed. Since it flows in reverse direction after impinging the impingement baffle, the shell wall of the number 5 high pressure feedwater heater may be affected by flow-accelerated corrosion. This paper describes the comparisons between the numerical analysis results using the FLUENT code and the down scale experimental data which effect on disclosing of the shell wall thinning of the high pressure feedwater heaters by porous plate.
The numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the thermal-fluid phenomena occurred inside the experimental apparatus during a PCCS, used to remove heat released in accidents from a containment of light water nuclear power plant, operation. Numerical simulations of the flow and heat transfer caused by wall condensation inside the containment simulation vessel (CSV), which equipped with 18 vertical heat exchanger tubes, were conducted using the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software ANSYS-CFX. Shear stress transport (SST) and the wall condensation model were used for turbulence closure and wall condensation, respectively. The simulation using the actual size of the apparatus. However, rather than simulating the whole experimental apparatus in consideration of the experimental cases, calculation resources, and calculation time, the simulation model was prepared only in CSV. Selective simulation was conducted to verify the effects of non-condensable gas(NC gas) concentration, CSV internal pressure, and wall sub-cooling conditions. First, as a result of the internal flow of CSV, it was observed that downward flow due to condensation occurred surface of the vertical tube and upward flow occurred in the distant place. Natural convection occurred actively around the heat exchanger tube. Due to this rising and falling internal flow, natural circulation occurred actively around the heat exchanger tubes. Next, in order to check the performance of built-in condensation model using according to the non-condensable gas concentration, CSV internal flow and wall sub-cooling, the heat flux values were compared with the experimental results. On average, the results were underestimated with and error of about 25%. In addition, the influence of CSV internal pressure and wall sub-cooling was small, but when the condensate was highly generated due to the low non-condensable gas concentration, the error was large compared to the experimental values. This is considered to be due to the nature of the condensation model of the CFX code. However, in spite of the limitations of CFD, it is valid to use the built-in condensation model of CFD for PCCS performance prediction from a conservative perspective.
This research is to determine the stormwater effects on sewer concentrations by measuring and comparing the flow and pollutant concentrations during dry and rainy periods in the existing BOX type combined sewer pipes. The monitoring was carried out in two sites, which are the Daesachen outfall having PE separation wall in BOX type combined sewer pipes and the Yongunchen outfall not having seperatioin wall. The average flow-weighted BOD concentraion in Yongunchen outfall is 2-fold lower than in Daesachen outfall because of the dilution effect from ravine water. However, the pollutant mass loading is 16 fold higher in Yongunchen outfall than in Daesachen outfall because of more flows. According to the research, the separation wall controls 52% pollutant mass during a storm period (11.5 mm/hr rainfall intensity). Therefore, the Yongunchen combined sewer system (CSS) need separation wall to control and to prevent more pollutant input in stream. In Daesachen area, the maximum sewer flow rate during a storm period measured about 10 fold bigger than average sewer flow during dry periods. Also the concentrations between rainy and dry periods increase approximately 33 fold for BOD and 120 fold for SS. In Yongunchen area, it increases about 9 fold for the maximum flow rate, 18 fold for BOD and 22 fold for SS during a storm. Therefore, the research is concluded that the separation wall between stromwater (or ravine water) and sewage can decrease the dilution effect in CSS and control the pollutant loading.
Significant piping wall thinning caused by Flow-Accelerated Corrosion (FAC) and Erosion-Corrosion (EC) continues to occur, even after the Mihama Power Station unit 3 secondary pipe rupture in 2004, in which workers were seriously injured or died. Nuclear power plants in many countries have experienced FAC and EC-related cases in steam cycle piping systems. Korea has also experienced piping wall thinning cases including thinning in the downstream straight pipe of a check valve in a feedwater pump line, the downstream elbow of a control valve in a feedwater flow control line, and failure of the straight pipe downstream of an orifice in an auxiliary steam return line. Cause analyses were performed by reviewing thickness data using Ultrasonic Techniques (UT) and, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) images for the failed pipe, and numerical simulation results for FAC and EC cases in Korea Nuclear Power Plants. It was concluded that the main cause of wall thinning for the downstream pipe of a check valve is FAC caused by water vortex flow due to the internal flow shape of a check valve, the main cause of wall thinning for the downstream elbow of a control valve is FAC caused by a thickness difference with the upstream pipe, and the main cause of wall thinning for the downstream pipe of an orifice is FAC and EC caused by liquid droplets and vortex flow. In order to investigate more cases, additional analyses were performed with the review of a lot of thickness data for inspected pipes. The results showed that pipe wall thinning was also affected by the operating condition of upstream equipment. Management of FAC and EC based on these cases will focus on the downstream piping of abnormal or unusual operated equipment.
The characteristics of tidal circulation with the flow-control structures using the three-dimensional numerical model (POM, Princeton Ocean Model) of Chinhae Bay, Korea were investigated. To confirm th efficiencies of flow-control structures, the training wall and submerged training wall were constructed at the mouth and narrow channel in Chinhae Bay. On the basis of the present investigation, the tidal circulation induced by the construction of flow-control structures could enhance the water exchange improvement appropriately. And, th training wall at the central is more dominated than the other structures for the efficient of water exchange. The sites and types of structure and flow patterns seem to be very sensitive in tidal simulation and changes in flow fields.
A study on the sloshing flow of highly-viscous fluid in a rectangular box was made by both of theoretical approach and experimental visualization method. Assuming a smallness of external forcing to oscillate the container, it was investigated a linear sloshing flow of highly-viscous fluid utilizing asymptotic analysis by Taylor-series expansion as a small parameter Re (≪1) in which Re denotes Reynolds number. The theory predict that, during all cycles of sloshing, a linear shape of free surface will prevail in a bulk zone and it has confirmed in experiment. The relevance of perfect slip boundary condition, adopted in theoretical approach, to the bulk zone flow at the container wall was tested in experiment. It is found that quasi-steady coated thin film, which makes a lubricant layer between bulk flow and solid wall, is generated on the wall and the film makes a role to perfect slip boundary condition.
With uniform heat generation within the wall of the cylinder placed in a cross flow, heat flows by conduction in the circumferential direction due to the asymmetric nature of the fluid flow around the perimeter of the cylinder. The circumferential heat flow affects the wall temperature distribution to such an extent that in some cases significantly different results may be obtained for geometrically similar surfaces. In the present investigation, the effects of circumferential wall heat conduction on local convective heat transfer is investigated for the case of forced convection around horizontal cylinder in cross flow of air. Two-dimensional temperature distribution $T_w$/(${\gamma}$,${\theta}$) is presented through the numerical analysis. The one-dimensional and two-dimensional solutions are in good agreement with experimental results of local heat transfer coefficients.
The head-capacity corves for pumps developed by the pump manufacturer are based on tests of a single pump operating in a semi-infinite pool with no nearby walls or floors and with no stray currents. Hence, flow into the pump suction is symmetrical with no vortices or swirling. Pump station designers rely on these curves to define the operating conditions for the pump selected. However, various constraints such as size, cost, and limitations on storage time require walls, floors, and pump intakes to be close proximity to each other. From this background, the authors are carrying out a systematic study on the flow characteristics of intakes within a sump found in pump stations. Model pump intake basin is designed and PIV is adopted as a measuring tool to capture the instantaneous flow patterns. Special attention is paid to investigate the flow patterns near the free surface, side-wall, and back-wall due to different clearances from back-wall to vortical intake pipe. Moreover, the locations and patterns of the various types of vortices that were found in the examinations are discussed.
