  • Structural safety as well as variety and aesthetics of building facade are currently gathering more attention in building construction and stone curtain wall is widely used in exterior wall. However, two main problems are existed in curtain wall construction method. One is an uniformity of construction quality and the other is a repair work of stone panels. Also, the noise and vibration occurring in construction may be cause of civil complaint. Therefore, a new method is needed to overcome these problems. This paper presents a new stone curtain wall system using under cut anchor and secondary holes that was developed in this study. Additionally, structural performance evaluation was conducted to verify the constructability and structural safety for wind pressure and seismic load. Through the evaluation of this method, improved constructability and economic efficiency were verified.

  • This study was to solve the lift problem of the existing unit curtain wall type by using the vertical material mullion as a rail in curtain wall, which is recently used as an external finishing material for high-rise buildings. It has been shown that the application of the curtain wall mullion's rail can be quantified even at 20m/sec wind speed through the Mock-Up test. Based on the sites selected for comparison of construction methods, it was analyzed that the construction period could be shortened by 48 days, or about 20 percent. It was analyzed that the number of construction workers could be reduced by about 33 percent from the previous nine to six. Based on these results, assuming the installation of curtain wall units of 10,000㎡, it is judged that construction cost can be reduced by 80% or more.

  • This study aims to evaluate the structural safety of the balcony photovoltaic systems easily installed or moved on the buildings. Also, the systems are controlled by solar altitudes focused on its mobility rather than high efficiency generation performance thereof. The results of the study are as follows. Two types of typical photovoltaic systems which can be mounted on the balcony are proposed, and, the sizes of the systems are designed to be adjusted within certain ranges of the frames in order to attach the various rail sizes. To evaluate the structural safety of the proposed systems, several simulation evaluations are performed on the safety evaluation standards by the Ministry of Construction-Transportation and KCI 2007. The results are that the proposed plans are reasonable in terms of stress and deflection in the structural aspects at the wind pressures of $1,907(N/m^2)$ of external wall surface under the condition of wind velocity higher than 25(m/s).

  • There is growing consciousness of the environmental performance of buildings in Hong Kong. The Buildings Department, the Lands Department and the Planning Department of the Hong Kong Government issued the first of a series of joint practice notes [1] to promote the construction of green and innovative buildings. Green features are architectural features used to mitigate migration of noise and various air-borne pollutants and to moderate the transport of heat, air and transmission of daylight from outside to indoor environment in an advantageous way. This joint practice note sets out the incentives to encourage the industry in Hong Kong to incorporate the use of green features in building development. The use of green features in building design not only improves the environmental quality, but also reduces the consumption of non-renewable energy used in active control of indoor environment. Larger window openings in the walls of a building may provide better natural ventilation. However, it also increases the penetration of direct solar radiation into indoor environment. The use of wing wall, one of the green features, is an alternative to create effective natural ventilation. This paper therefore presents a preliminary numerical study of its ventilation performance using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The numerical results will be compared with the results of the wind tunnel experiments of Givoni.

  • Vortex-Induced-Vibration (VIV) is one kind of the wind-induced vibrations, which may occur in the construction and operation period of bridges. This phenomenon can bring negative effects to the traffic safety or can cause bridge fatigue damage and should be eliminated or controlled within safe amplitudes. In the current VIV studies, one available mitigation countermeasure, the horizontal flow-isolating plate, shows satisfactory performance particularly in PI shaped bridge deck type. Details of the wind tunnel test are firstly presented to give an overall description of this appendage and its control effect. Then, the computational-fluid-dynamics(CFD) method is introduced to investigate the control mechanism, using two-dimensional Large-Eddy-Simulation to reproduce the VIV process. The Reynolds number of the cases involved in this paper ranges from $1{\times}10^5$ to $3{\times}10^5$, using the width of bridge deck as reference length. A field-filter technique and detailed analysis on wall pressure are used to give an intuitive demonstration of the changes brought by the horizontal flow-isolating plate. Results show that this aerodynamic appendage is equally effective in suppressing vertical and torsional VIV, indicating inspiring application prospect in similar PI shaped bridge decks.

  • A scramjet engine intake model was tested with a storage air heater type hypersonic wind tunnel. In test results, there is no large performance change with the variation of the sidewall configurations. In the isolator performance analysis, pressure distribution of oblique shock train and normal shock train was observed. Unstart limit of the model was also confirmed.

  • Wake characteristics of the flow over a finite square prism at different incidence angles were experimentally investigated using an open-loop wind tunnel. A finite square prism with a width D = 15 mm and a height H = 7D was vertically mounted on a horizontal flat plate. The Reynolds number was varied from $6.5{\times}10^3$ to $28.5{\times}10^3$ and the incidence angle ${\alpha}$ was changed from $0^{\circ}$ to $45^{\circ}$. The ratio of boundary layer thickness to the prism height was about ${\delta}/H=7%$. The time-averaged velocity, turbulence intensity and the vortex shedding frequency were obtained through a single-component hotwire probe. Power spectrum of the streamwise velocity fluctuations revealed that the tip and base vortices shed at the same frequency as that ofspanwise vortices. Furthermore, the results showed that the critical incidence angle corresponding to the maximum Strouhal number and minimum wake width occurs at ${\alpha}_{cr}=15^{\circ}$ which is equal to that reported for an infinite prism. There is a reduction in the size of the wake region along the height of the prism when moving away from the ground plane towards the free end.

  • The stack effect of a new type condenser installed in a high-rise apartment building was studied numerically A sirocco fan is introduced to the new type condenser instead of an axial flow In. The new type condenser intakes the cold air through the lower inlet and exhausts the hot air through the upper outlet. The effects of the building height and frontal wind on the performance of an air-conditioner were analyzed. The performance of an air-conditioner was evaluated by using COP (coefficient of performance) and CGPI (condenser group performance indicator). the hot air was exhausted by the new type condenser at an angle of 50$^{\circ}$ from the outer wall of the building. If there was no draft, the new type condenser installed in the high-rise apartment building had a good performance and its performance on each floor is not influenced by the stack effect. It is shown that the efficiency of the air-conditioner installed in several floors below the top floor decreased when the frontal wind velocity was greater than 8 m/s.

  • In this study, the effects of vent location, outside temperature, wind velocity and fire size on the performance of natural venting of the vertical vent designed according to NFPA 204 standard and fire characteristics were numerically investigated using CFAST. In cases of the Vent located on most upper wall, lower outside temperature and lower wind velocity, vents met the performance criteria of venting. The larger fire size becomes, the more mass flow rate through a vent becomes, but the lower interface height of smoke layer becomes, so that vent didn't meet the performance criteria of venting. It should be noted that a natural vertical vent be designed considering maximum outside temperature and maximum wind velocity and developing a design fire accurately in order to meet the performance criteria of venting.

  • Pressure Sensitive Paint(PSP) means a reacting paint in pressure. The calibration of PSP and the wind tunnel test of PSP painted model are required to measure pressure by using PSP. Therefore, the post processing from these results shows the information and image of the pressure distribution. PSP can show the information of total pressure from the wind tunnel test and the calibration. In this study, equipments of PSP are composed, and experiment is accomplished by using PSP. The surface pressure distribution around the wall of nozzle is measured by PSP. The measured pressure has similar results to those of the CFD and pressure tap measurement.
