  • The great damage to the mature fruits in the orchard caused by the fruit sucking moths including unidentified species, is a troublesome problem in recent years in Korea. The present survey is, there-fort, carried out to clarify the ecological characters, especially kinds of these harmful moths and their damage at Suwon and Jinju fruit growing areas, in order to establish the foundation of the control. Some results obtained through the survey are as follows: It is investigated that the most noticeable group of these noxious moths, identified 10 species, belongs to subfamily Catocalinae of the family Noctuidae. Although there was already recorded as the harmful moths on the fruits such 4 species as Oraesia excavata B. Adris tyrannus amurensis S., Calpe thalictri B. and Dermaleipa juno Delman, it is additionally identified to be 6 species in 1968 including Oraesia emarginata F.,O. lata B., Agrotis ipsilon H., Chrysorithrum amatum Bremer et Grey, Dinumma deponens W. and Trachea atriplicis L. of the fruit sucking moths in Korea. Of all these noxious moths damaged, O. excavata is the most harmful, following by O. emarginata and Adris tyrannus. The fruit sucking moths attack on all kinds of mature fruits from early summer to late fall and behave entirely nocturnal. The damage ratio in percentage of these moths is $8.9\%$ on grape in Suwon, and $3.4\%$ on pears in Jinju.

  • Background: To reduce use of main feed ingredient like corn, soy bean meal (SBM) and wheat, alternative ingredients has been studied like copra meal (CM). Production amount of CM which has been high makes CM to be an alternative feed stuff. However, low digestibility on AA and low energy content by high fiber content can be an obstacle for using CM. This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of CM supplementation with ${\beta}$-mannanase on growth performance, blood profile, nutrient digestibility, pork quality and economic analysis in growing-finishing pigs. Methods: A total of 100 growing pigs ([Yorkshire ${\times}$ Landrace] ${\times}$ Duroc) averaging $31.22{\pm}2.04kg$ body weight were allotted to 5 different treatments by weight and sex in a randomized complete block (RCB) design in 5 replicate with 4 pigs per pen. Treatments were 1) Control (corn-SBM based diet + 0.1% of ${\beta}$-mannanase (800 IU)), 2) CM10 (10% copra meal + 0.1% ${\beta}$-mannanase (800 IU)), 3) CM15 (15% copra meal + 0.1% ${\beta}$-mannanase (800 IU)), 4) CM20 (20% copra meal + 0.1% ${\beta}$-mannanase (800 IU)) and 5) CM25 (25% copra meal + 0.1% ${\beta}$-mannanase (800 IU)). Four phase feeding program was used: growing I (week 1-3), growing II (week 4-6), finishing I (week 7-9) and finishing II (week 10-12). Results: In growth performance, there was no significant difference among treatments during whole experimental period. In growingI phase, G:F ratio tended to increase when CM was increased (P = 0.05), but ADG and ADFI tended to decrease in finishingII phase (linear, P = 0.08). Also, increasing CM reduced ADG (linear, P = 0.02) and feed efficiency (linear, P = 0.08) during the whole finishing period. In blood profiles, BUN was linearly increased as CM increased (linear, P = 0.02) at growingII period. In digestibility trial, there was no significant difference in dry matter, crude fat, crude ash and nitrogen digestibility. However, crude protein digestibility was decreased linearly (linear, P = 0.02). In economic analysis, feed cost per weight gain and total feed cost per pig were reduced in overall period when CM was provided by 25% (linear, P = 0.02). Conclusion: CM with 0.1% of ${\beta}$-mannanase (800 IU) could be supplemented instead of corn and SBM up to 25% without detrimental effects on growth performance and pork quality of growing-finishing pigs.

  • Small scale hydropower is one of most attractive and cost-effective energy technologies for installation within sewage treatment plants. This study was conducted to evaluate the potential of a semi-kaplan micro-hydropower (MHP) system for application to sewage treatment plants with high flow fluctuations and a low head. The semi-kaplan MHP is equipped with an adjustable runner blade, and is without a guide vane, so as to reduce the incidence of mechanical problems. A MHP rating 13.4 kWp with a semi-kaplan turbine has been considered for Kiheung Respia sewage treatment plant, and this installation is estimated to generate 86.8 MWh of electricity annually, which is enough to supply electricity to over 25 households, and equivalent to an annual reduction of 49 ton $CO_2$. The semi-kaplan turbine showed a 90.2% energy conversion efficiency at the design flow rate of 0.35 $m^3/s$ and net head of 4.7 m, and was adaptable to a wide range of flow fluctuations. Through the MHP operation, approximately 2.1% of total electricity demand of Kiheung Respia sewage treatment plant will be achievable. Based on financial analysis, an exploiting MHP is considered economically acceptable with an internal rate of return of 6.1%, net present value of 15,539,000 Korean Won, benefit-cost ratio of 1.08, and payback year of 15.5, respectively, if initial investment cost is 200,000,000 Korean Won.

  • Dry weight, and mineral content in leaves, stems, and roots of the ginseng plant (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) were investigated. The highest T/R ratio, 0.52, was observed in a four year old plant due to a vigorous growth of the plant at this age. Also the dry weight increase was rather higher in the younger root than the older one. Mineral content of the plant was rather higher in the younger root than the older one. Potassium content in leaves and stems was higher than those of nitrogen and phosphorus. Generally, the leaves contained more iron and manganese than any other micronutrients. The iron content amounted to $1,000{\sim}2,000ppm$ in leaves. Zinc content was higher in stems and leaves than roots especially in stems of the younger roots. Total amount of the up-taken N, $P_2O_5$, and $K_2O$ per 10a in six years was 10.2kg, 2.3kg and 14.9kg respectively, indicating the considerable abounts of $K_2O$ was absorbed.

  • This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of feldspar on growth performance and body composition in broiler chicks. A total of 120 one-day old 'Ross' broilers were assigned to 5 treatments in a completely randomized design. The five dietary treatments were control, antibiotic(0.05% chlortetracycline), feldspar 0.5, 1.0, 1.5% diets. The weight gain of broilers fed a diet containing 1.5% feldspar (2,088 g) was significantly (P<0.05) higher than control (1,888 g). The feed intake was significantly increased in feldspar treatments compared to that of the control (P<0.05). However, feed conversion ratio was significantly increased in 1.0% feldspar treatment compared to that of the control (P<0.05). The moisture and protein contents of meat were significantly increased in 1.0% feldspar treatment (75.69 and 15.22%) compared to that of the control (73.38 and 9.80%). However, the crude fat content of meat was reduced in feldspar treatments compared to control and antibiotics treatments (P<0.05). The TBA value of meat in feldspar treatments was significantly reduced compared to that of the control (P<0.05). The plasma cholesterol content was 129 mg/dL in 0.5% feldspar and 134 mg/dL in 1.0% feldspar treatments, which were significantly higher (P<0.05) than that of the control (103 mg/dL).

  • The purpose of this study is the basic research of self-compacting concrete using Alkali-Activated Slag (AAS) binder in order to emphasize the durability of structures and facilitate casting the fresh concrete in field. The AAS binder emitted low carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) is eco friendly material of new concept because AAS products not only emit little $CO_2$ during production but also reuse the industrial by-products such as ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) of the steel mill. Until now, almost of domestic and foreign research are using Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) for self-compacting concrete, and also, nonexistent research about AAS. The self-compacting concrete must get the performance of flowability, segregation resistance, filling and passing ability. Nine concrete mixes were prepared with the main parameter of unit amount of binder (400, 500, 600 $kg/m^3$) and 3 types of water-binder (W/B) ratio. The results of test were that fresh concretes were satisfied with flowability, segregation resistance, and filling ability of JSCE. But the passing ability was not meet the criteria of EFNARC because of higher viscosity of AAS paste than OPC. This high viscosity of AAS paste enables the manufacturing of self compacting concrete, segregation of which does not occur without the using of viscosity agent. It is necessary that the development of high fluidity AAS binders of higher strength and the study of better passing ability of AAS concrete mixes in order to use self compacting AAS concrete in field.

  • This study estimated the effect of fermented persimmon (Diospros kaki L.) extract (FPE) supplement on feed intake, digestibility, nitrogen (N) balance, and rumen fermentation characteristics in sheep. Five male sheep (Corriedale${\times}$Polwarth) with average body weight of $48.6{\pm}1.3\;kg$ were housed in metabolism crates and assigned to a 5${\times}$5 Latin square design with five consecutive 20-d periods which consisted of 14-d adaptation and 6-d data collection. The sheep were fed ad libitum a diet containing concentrate and rice straw (3:7). The five treatments were FPE supplemented at 0 (Control), 5, 10, 20, and 30 g/kg of concentrate. Intakes of dry matter (DM, p<0.01), organic matter (OM, p<0.01), neutral detergent fiber (NDF, p<0.05), acid detergent fiber (ADF, p<0.05), and nitrogen-free extract (NFE, p<0.01) increased quadratically with increasing intake of FPE supplement and maximized (p<0.05) at 10 g/kg FPE. The digestibilities of DM (p<0.05), OM (p<0.05), crude protein (p<0.01), and NFE (p<0.01) increased quadratically with increasing amount of FPE supplement, and sheep fed 5 and 10 g/kg diets had greater (p<0.05) DM, OM, and NFE digestibilites than the Control treatment. By increasing FPE supplement concentration, N intake (p<0.01) and fecal N (p<0.05) increased linearly, whereas retained N (p<0.05) and retained N ratio (p<0.05) increased quadratically. The retained N was maximized (p<0.05) in sheep fed 5 and 10 g/kg diets. The mean rumen pH was not affected by FPE supplement, but there was a quadratic increase (p<0.05) of mean rumen ammonia N concentration and a linear increase (p<0.01) in mean rumen total volatile fatty acid (VFA) and acetate concentrations. The mean concentration of rumen propionate in sheep fed all FPE supplemented diets was greater (p<0.05) than the Control, but the mean ratios of rumen acetate to propionate in sheep fed 5 and 10 g/kg diets were lower (p<0.05) than that of Control sheep. In conclusion, FPE supplemented at 5-10 g/kg of concentrate improved feed intake, the digestibilites of OM and NFE, N metabolism, and rumen fermentation indices of sheep.

  • The region, near the edge of a radiation beam, where the dose changes rapidly according to the distance from the beam axis is known as the penumbra. There is a sharp dose gradient zone even in megavoltage photon beams due to source size, collimator, lead alloy block, other accessories, and internal scatter ray. We investigate dosimetric characteristics on penumbra regions of a standard collimator and compare to those of theoritical model for the optimal use of the system in radiotherapy. Peripheral dose distribution of 6 W Photon beams represents penumbral forming function as the depth. Also we have discussed that the peripheral dose distribution of clinical photon beams, differences between calculation dose use of emperical penumbral forming function and measurements in penumbral region. Predictions by emperical penumbral forming functions are compared with measurements in 3-dimensional water phantom and it is shown that the method is capable of reproduceing the measured peripheral dose values usually to within the statistical uncertainties of the data. The semiconductor detector and ion chamber were positioned at a dmax depth, 5cm depth, 10cm depth, and its specific ratio was determined using a scanning data. The effective penumbra, the distance from 80% to 20% isodose lines were analyzed as a function of the distance. The extent of penumbra will also expand with depth increase. Difference of measurement value and model functions value according to character of the detector show small error in dose distribution of the peripheral dose.

  • Total polyphenol contents, flavonoid contents, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activities of ethanol extracts of 20 herbal plants (sage, turmeric, mace, bayleaf, fenugreek, oregano, blackpepper, whitepepper, clove, marjoram, cinnamon, coriander, basil, dillseed, mustard, cadamon, thyme, celery, rosemary, cumin) were analyzed for the screening of high flavonoid-containing plant resource. Thyme extract, showing the highest flavonoid content and a high degree of antioxidant activity, was selected as a bioactive cosmetic material. The total polyphenols and flavonoids contents of thyme extracts were measured as 6.90 mg chlorogenic acid equivalent (CAE)/100 g and 1.71 mg naringin equivalent (NE)/100 g, respectively, and DPPH radical scavenging activities was 90%. Among the tested organic solvents, hexane gave the highest extraction yield. Thus hexane was selected as the most suitable solvent for the extraction of thyme. Response surface method was used to obtain optimized extraction conditions for thyme: reaction temperature of 35.9 ℃, raw material to hexane ratio of 1.63:25 (w/v), and reaction time of 192 min. These predicted extraction conditions was validated by a total flavonoid extraction experiment showing a value equivalent to 96.3% of the predicted total flavonoid content. It is expected that the optimized solvent extraction conditions could be used for the production of flavonoid using thyme.

  • Objective: The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of night light regimen on growth performance, antioxidant status and health of Lingnan Yellow broiler chickens from 1 to 21 days of age. Methods: A completely randomized factorial design involved 2 photoperiods (constant lighting [CL], 24 L:0 D and intermittent lighting [INL], 17 L:3 D:1 L:3 D)${\times}2$ light intensities (10 lx and 30 lx). A total of one thousand six hundred and eighty 1-d-old Lingnan Yellow broiler chicks were randomly divided into 4 treatments with 6 replicates (70 birds per replicate). The experiment lasted for 21 d. Results: Photoperiods and light intensities had no effect on average daily gain, feed conversion ratio, and mortality of the broiler chickens (p>0.05). The INL had a significant effect on average daily feed intake (p<0.05) of broiler chickens compared with CL. Photoperiod and light intensity had an interactive effect on melatonin (MT) concentration (p<0.05). At CL, reducing light intensity increased MT concentration; INL birds had higher MT but MT concentration was not affected by light intensity. There was an interactive effect on glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and catalase (CAT) in serum and total antioxidant capability (T-AOC) in liver between photoperiod and light intensity. With the decrease of light intensity, the activities of GPx and CAT in serum and T-AOC in liver increased in CL group (p<0.05). Broiler chickens reared under INL had better antioxidant status and 10 lx treatments had higher activities of CAT in serum than 30 lx (p<0.05). Different photoperiods and light intensities had no effect on malondialdehyde. There was an interaction between photoperiod and light intensity on serum creatine kinase (CK) concentration (p<0.05). At CL, the elevated light intensity resulted in an increase in CK content; INL birds had lower CK concentration especially in low light intensity group. Besides, INL and low light intensity significantly reduced the concentration of serum corticosterone and heat shock protein 70 (p<0.05). Serum immunoglobulin M contents were increased in broiler chickens reared under the INL compared with CL group (p<0.05). Conclusion: Results above suggest that the night light regimen of INL and 10 lx could be beneficial to the broiler chickens from 1 to 21 days of age due to the better health status and electricity savings.
