This study was done to find out the difference in vowel length between English produced by Americans and KATUSA soldiers. Though English pronunciation by Koreans shows different features in many ways, I focused on English vowel length of KATUSA soldiers. I wanted to know if English low vowels show a foreign accent by comparing vowel lengths in English produced by Americans and KATUSA soldiers. The reason I wanted to deal with English low vowels is that most Koreans have difficulty in pronouncing them. Therefore I selected three English low vowels, /$\{\ae}$, /c/, and/$\alpha$/, as the experimental object, and I tried to find out the foreign accent of them. In this study, I also tried to find out the vowel lengths in relation to their utterance positions and see the foreign accent of English low vowels. I investigated the difference of the English low vowels lengths between Americans and KATUSA soldiers using information gathered from experimental results.

The purpose of this experimental study is to investigate and compare the. vowel lengths of English diphthongs and low vowels among native-English-speaking Americans with Korean college students from the Chungnam and Gyungnam provinces. Eight words and sixteen sentences were uttered five times by twenty five subjects from three groups; 1) Chungnam dialect speakers, 2) Gyungnam dialect speakers and 3) five native-English-speaking Americans. Acoustic features (duration) were measured from sound spectrograms made by the PC Quire. Results showed that the vowel lengths of English diphthongs and low vowels between native English speakers and Korean collegians of Chungnam and Gyungnam provinces were different. Comparing the average length of English diphthongs of Korean collegians with those of American natives, we can see that native English speakers tend to pronounce the English diphthongs shorter than Korean collegians do. However, native English speakers tend to pronounce the English low vowels longer than Korean collegians do. In this study we also tried to find out the differences of English diphthongs and low vowel lengths in relation to their utterance positions among American natives and Chungnam and Gyungnam dialect speakers. By the results of this experiment, we observed a lengthening effect in the three groups. However, in the pronunciation of American natives, a lengthening effect of English vowels was more clearly observed, especially in the pronunciation of English diphthongs.

본 연구는 Praat 소프트웨어 프로그램을 이용하여 영어이중모음 /eɪ/ 와 /aɪ/, 그리고 영어전설저모음 /æ/의 발음 길이에 관해 한국인 피 실험자와 원어민 피 실험자를 대상으로 그 차이를 비교분석해보고자 한 연구이다. 이 연구를 위해서 영어문장이 발화되고 녹음되었으며, 피 실험자는 한국인과 원어민 각각 6명씩 참가하였으며, 모두 여성이었고 나이는 23세에서 35세에 위치하고 있다. 음향특질중 하나인 길이측정을 위해서 Praat소프트웨어 프로그램을 활용하였으며, 그 결과를 통계 처리하였다. 실험결과 /eɪ/ 와 /aɪ/에서는 한국인들이 더 길게 발음하였지만 그 차이가 통계상 유의미한 수준은 아니었다. 그러나 /æ/의 발음에서는 한국인들의 발음 길이가 원어민에 비해 훨씬 짧았으며, 그 차이도 통계상 유의미한 수준으로 나타났다.

The purpose of this experimental study is to investigate and compare the vowel lengths of English diphthongs and low vowels among native-English-speaking Americans and Korean college exchange students. To do this eight words and sixteen sentences were uttered and recorded by nine subjects, five Korean subjects and four American subjects. Results showed that the vowel lengths of English low vowels between American subjects and Korean subjects were different, which may lead to foreign accent of Korean speakers. Comparing the average length of English low vowels of Korean subjects with those of American subjects, we can see that American subjects tend to pronounce the English low vowels longer than Korean subjects do. In the pronunciation of diphthongs /eI/ and /ou/, Korean subjects pronounced longer than American subjects did. However, in the pronunciation of diphthongs /au/, /aI/, and /ɔI/, American subjects pronounced longer than Korean subjects did.

This study was done to investigate the English front vowels /e/ and /${\ae}$/. These vowels are difficult for Koreans to discern and pronounce. So they show a foreign accent in pronouncing them. In order to find out the reason for Koreans' foreign accent, experiments are carried out with the help of acoustic instruments. The results of the experiment show that there is a considerable difference, especially in vowel length, between the way Korean and Americans pronounce the two English vowels, /e/ and /${\ae}$/. When Americans pronounced English front vowel /e/ and /${\ae}$/ there was a big difference in vowel length between the two vowels. But for Koreans there was only a little difference between two vowels and as a result Koreans showed a foreign accent when they spoke these two English front vowels. Therefore we need to consider the difference of vowel lengths between /e/ and /${\ae}$/ in teaching English pronunciation.

This thesis describes pronunciation differences of vowel lengths between Koreans and Americans speaking English words and sentences. This study also analizes the reasons for these differences with the help of acoustic instruments. Sixteen sentences and eight words were selected as the experimental material. The informants for this study were 9 males; 3 Americans and 6 Koreans, who were asked to pronounce the test words and sentences five times. In this study, the acoustical analysis to measure duration was done through computer digital techniques. According to the results of the experiment, duration of 8 English vowels pronounced between Koreans and Americans shows very different features. When Koreans pronounce English vowels, the duration of the stressed vowel in the sentence-final position is much shorter than in other positions, such as in the sentence-initial and in word position. On the contrary, when Americans pronounce English vowels, the duration of the stressed vowel in the sentence-final position is much longer than in other positions. If the correlation between length and stress were to be studied in a more detailed manner, it would give fundamental help to the study of relation between stress and length.

Therefore I selected five English diphthongs, /aI/, cI/, /au/, /eI/, /ou,/as/ the experimental object, and I tried to find out the foreign accent of them. In this study I also tried to find out the vowel lengths in relation to their utterance positions. I investigated the difference of the English diphthong length between American and KATUSA soldiers using information gathered from experimental results.

The purpose of this study is to examine the relative distances among English front vowels in a message produced by 47 Korean and American speakers in order to better instruct pronunciation skills of English vowels for Korean English learners. A Praat script was developed to collect the first and second formant values(F1 and F2) of eight words in each sound file which was recorded from an internet speech archive. Then, the Euclidean distances were measured between the three vowel pairs: [i-ɛ], [i-ɪ], and [ɛ-æ]. The first vowel pair [i-ɛ] was set as the reference from which the relative distances of the other two vowel pairs were measured in percent in order to compare the vowel sounds among speakers of different vocal tract lengths. Results show that F1 values of the front vowels produced by the Korean and American speakers increased from the high front vowel to the low front vowel wih differences among the groups. The Korean speakers generally produced the front vowels with smaller jaw openings than the American speakers did. Secondly, the relative distance of the high front vowel pair [i-ɪ] showed a significant difference between the Korean and American speakers while that of the low front vowel pair [ɛ-æ] showed a non-significant difference. Finally, the Korean speakers in the higher proficiency level produced front vowels with higher F1 values than those in the lower proficiency level. The author concluded that Korean speakers should produce the front high vowels distinctively by securing sufficient relative distance of the formant values. Further studies would be desirable to examine how strong the Korean speakers' English proficiency correlate with the relative distance of target words of comparable productions.

본 연구는 강세음절이 있는 8개의 단어를 선정하여 원어민과 한국 대학생들 사이의 모음발음 길이를 스펙트로그램을 이용하여 측정한 후에 비교분석한 실험적 연구이다. 이 실험을 위하여 20명의 한국인 피 실험자들이 8개의 단어들이 들어있는 문장들을 발화하고 녹음하였으며, 음향적 특질들은 Praat 소프트웨어 프로그램을 이용하여 측정하였으며 그 결과를 통계분석 하였다. 분석결과, 8개의 강세모음에서 두 집단 간 차이가 있었으며, 7개의 강세모음에서는 그 차이가 유의미하였다. 두 실험집단 간 실험결과를 보면, 제1음절에 강세가 있는 모음들은 모두 집단 간 유의미한 차이를 보여주었다. 그 중에서 wonderful과 glasses의 강세음절에서는 유의미성이 크게 나타나고 있었는데, 특히 영어저모음 /${\ae}$/의 발음에서는 원어민이 한국인집단보다 훨씬 큰 길이로 발음하는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 실험결과는 영어교육현장에서 외국인어투의 개선을 위한 수업자료로 활용할 수 있으리라 판단된다.

본 연구는 다섯 개의 문장을 선정하여 그 안에 들어있는 다섯 개의 단어와 그 단어 내에 들어있는 모음들을 대상으로 하여 한국인들의 모음발음 길이를 Praat 프로그램을 이용하여 측정한 후에 원어민의 실험결과와 비교분석한 연구이다. 20명의 한국인 피 실험자들이 실험을 위해 실험문장을 읽고 녹음하였으며, 음향적 특질들은 스펙트로그램 등을 활용한 Praat Software 프로그램을 이용하여 측정하여 그 결과를 얻었다. 이러한 과정을 통해 얻어진 결과들은 통계분석 하였다. 분석결과, 단어단위에서는 3개의 단어에서 두 집단 간 차이가 있었으며, 5개의 모음들은 모두 그 차이가 유의미하였다. 또한 두 실험집단 간 단어와 모음발음크기 비율에 관한 비교에서는 모든 단어와 모음들의 발음크기 비율이 두 집단 간 유의미한 차이를 보여주었다. 이러한 실험결과를 통해 영어전설저모음인 /${\ae}$/와 영어이중모음/ai/, 그리고 첫 번째 음절에 영어강세모음이 오는 경우에 그 발음 길이크기를 분석해보면 한국인 피 실험자집단에서는 외국인어투가 존재함을 다시 확인할 수 있었다.
