Light scattering enhancement is widely used to enhance the optical absorption efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells. In this work, we systematically analyzed the effects of spherical voids distributed as light-scattering centers in photoanode films made of an assembly of zinc oxide nanoparticles. Spherical voids in electrode films were formed using a sacrificial template of polystyrene (PS) spheres. The diameter and volume concentration of these spheres was varied to optimize the efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells. The effects of film thickness on this efficiency was also examined. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was performed to study electron transport in the electrodes. The highest power conversion efficiency of 4.07 % was observed with $12{\mu}m$ film thickness. This relatively low optimum thickness of the electrode film is due to the enhanced light absorption caused by the light scattering centers of voids distributed in the film.

We present a new void definition that connects voids with clusters, the high-density counterpart. We use a pair of ΛCDM simulations whose initial density fields are sign inverted versions to each other, and study the relation between the effective void volume and the corresponding cluster mass. Massive cluster halos (M ≥ 1013M⊙/h) are identified in one simulation at z=0 by linking dark matter particles. The corresponding void to each cluster is defined in the other simulation as the region occupied by the member particles of the cluster. We find a universal functional form of density profiles at z=0 and 1. We also find a power-law relation between the void effective radius and the corresponding cluster mass. Based on these findings, we identify cluster-counterpart voids directly from a density field without using the pair information by utilizing three parameters such as the smoothing scale, density threshold, and minimum core fraction. We identified voids corresponding to clusters more massive than M ≥ 3 × 1014M⊙/h at approximately 70-74 \% level of completeness and reliability. Our results suggest that we can detect voids comparable to clusters of a particular mass-scale.

In this study, the effect of void formation resulting from gas hydrate dissociation or loss of some particles within soil structure on the strength of soil is examined. Beag-ma river sands with uniform gradation were used to simulate a gas hydrate bearing or washable soil structure. Empty capsules for medicine are used to mimic large voids, which are bigger than soil particle. Beag-ma river sand was miced with 8% cement ratio and 14% water content and compacted into a shear box. The number and direction embedded into a specimen. After 4 hours curing, a series of direct shear test is performed on the capsule embedded cemented sands. Shear strength of cemented sands with capsules depends on the volume and direction. The volume and direction formed by voids are most important factors in strength. A shear strength of a specimen with large voids decreases up to 39% of a specimen without void. The results of this study can be used to predict the strength degradation of gas hydrate bearing sediments after dissociation and loss of fine particles within soil structure.

A Volume Integral Equation Method (VIEM) is applied for the effective analysis of elastic wave scattering problems and plane elastostatic problems in unbounded solids containing general anisotropic inclusions. It should be noted that this newly developed numerical method does not require the Green's function for anisotropic inclusions to solve this class of problems since only Green's function for the unbounded isotropic matrix is involved in their formulation for the analysis. This new method can also be applied to general two-dimensional elastodynamic and elastostatic problems with arbitrary shapes and number of anisotropic inclusions and voids. Through the analysis of plane elastodynamic and elastostatic problems in unbounded isotropic matrix with orthotropic inclusions and voids, it will be established that this new method is very accurate and effective for solving plane elastic problems in unbounded solids containing general anisotropic inclusions and voids.
The present work investigates about the development of a novel construction material by utilizing Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GBS), an industrial waste product, as substitution of natural fine aggregates. For this, experimental work has been carried out to determine the influence of GBS on the properties of concrete such as compressive strength (CS), modulus of elasticity, ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), chloride penetration, water absorption (WA) volume of voids (VV) and density. Concrete mixes of water/cement (w/c) ratios 0.45 and 0.5, and incorporating 20%, 40% and 60% of GBS as partial replacement of natural fine aggregate (sand) are designed for this study. The results of the experimental investigation depict that CS of concrete mixes increases with the increasing percentages of GBS. Moreover, the decrease in chloride penetration, WA and VV, and improvement in the modulus of elasticity, UPV, density of concrete is reported with the increasing percentage of GBS in concrete.
The present study addresses about the development of sustainable concrete utilizing recycled coarse aggregates manufactured form waste concrete and colloidal Nano-Silica. Experimental investigations are carried out to determine compressive and tensile strength of concrete mixes designed with recycled coarse aggregates and different percentages of Nano-Silica. Moreover, water absorption, density and volume voids of concrete mixes are also examined to ascertain the influence of Nano-Silica on behavior of recycled aggregate concrete. The outcomes of the research depict that properties of concrete mixes are significantly affected with the introduction of recycled coarse aggregates in place of the natural coarse aggregates. However, the study reveals that the depletion of behavior of recycled aggregate concrete could be restored with the incorporation of little amount (3%) of Nano-Silica.
Segregation in asphalt pavements occurs as a result of the non-uniform distribution of coarse and fine aggregates and causes premature distresses, such as cracking, raveling, and stripping. The effect of segregation on rutting, however, has not been clearly identified. Experimental and analytical work performed in this study indicates that rutting performance is affected by segregation of mixtures. However, the aggregate structure of mixtures appears to be a more critical factor that determines the rutting performance, rather than the level of segregation. Based on the field mixtures evaluated, an increase of coarse aggregate volume in an asphalt mixture is an important factor that results in good rutting performance. This effect holds true for mixtures with lower levels of air voids, but for mixtures with higher levels of air voids, the air voids effect becomes dominant, resulting in a reduction in rutting performance. An air void content of 10% appears to be a threshold that determines the rutting performance of Superpave mixtures. Once the air void content exceeds 10%, the rutting performance of Superpave mixtures decreases significantly, despite the coarse aggregate volume.

This paper aims to investigate the effect of rotation on a micropolar thermoelastic medium with voids problem. The problem is assessed according to three-phase-lag model. The normal mode analysis used to obtain the analytical expressions of the considered variables. The non-dimensional displacement, temperature, Micro rotation, the change in the volume fraction field, and stress of the material are obtained and illustrated graphically. Comparisons are made with the results predicted by two theories; namely three- phase-lag model (3PHL) and Green-Naghdi theory of type III (G-N III). The considered variables were plotted for different values of the rotation parameter, the phase-lag of heat flux and the phase-lag of temperature. The numerical results reveal that the rotation and the phase-lag times significantly influence the distribution of the field quantities. Some particular cases of interest are deduced from the present investigation.
This paper's objective is to investigate the effect of gravity on a micropolar thermoelastic medium with voids. The problem is assessed according to the three-phase-lag model. An analysis of the resulting non-dimensional displacement, temperature variation, and internal stress of the study material is carried out and presented graphically. The non-dimensional displacement, temperature, micro-rotation, the change in the volume fraction field and stress of the material are obtained and illustrated graphically. Comparisons are made with the results predicted by different theories for different values of gravity, the phase-lag of the heat flux and the phase-lag of the temperature gradient. The numerical results reveal that gravity and relaxation times have a significant influence on the distribution of the field quantities. Some notable insights of interest are deduced from the investigation.
The present investigation is to study the plane problem in initially stressed thermoelastic half-space with voids due to thermal source. Lord-Shulman (Lord and Shulman 1967) theory of thermoelasticity with one relaxation time has been used to investigate the problem. A particular type of thermal source has been taken as an application of the approach. Finite element technique has been used to solve the problem. The components of displacement, stress, temperature change and volume fraction field are computed numerically. The resulting quantities are depicted graphically for different values of initial stress parameter. The relaxation time and the initial stress parameter have a significant effect on all distributions.
