In this paper, we investigated a Value-at-Risk approach to the volatility of two crude oil markets (Brent and Dubai). We also assessed the performance of various VaR models (RiskMetrics, GARCH, IGARCH and FIGARCH models) with the normal and skewed Student-t distribution innovations. The FIGARCH model outperforms the GARCH and IGARCH models in capturing the long memory property in the volatility of crude oil markets returns. This implies that the long memory property is prevalent in the volatility of crude oil returns. In addition, from the results of VaR analysis, the FIGARCH model with the skewed Student-t distribution innovation predicts critical loss more accurately than other models with the normal distribution innovation for both long and short positions. This finding indicates that the skewed Student-t distribution innovation is better for modeling the skewness and excess kurtosis in the distribution of crude oil returns. Overall, these findings might improve the measurement of the dynamics of crude oil prices and provide an accurate estimation of VaR for buyers and sellers in crude oil markets.
Forecasting volatility is essential to avoiding the risk caused by the uncertainties of an financial asset. Complicated financial volatility features such as ambiguity between non-stationarity and stationarity, asymmetry, long-memory, sudden fairly large values like outliers bring great challenges to volatility forecasts. In order to address such complicated features implicity, we consider machine leaning models such as LSTM (1997) and GRU (2014), which are known to be suitable for existing time series forecasting. However, there are the problems of vanishing gradients, of enormous amount of computation, and of a huge memory. To solve these problems, a causal temporal convolutional network (TCN) model, an advanced form of 1D CNN, is also applied. It is confirmed that the overall forecasting power of TCN model is higher than that of the RNN models in forecasting VIX, VXD, and VXN, the daily volatility indices of S&P 500, DJIA, Nasdaq, respectively.

Insurers face increasing demands for cyber liability; entailed in part by a variety of new forms of risk of data breaches. As data breach occurrences develop, our understanding of the volatility in data breach counts has also become important as well as its expected occurrences. Volatility clustering, the tendency of large changes in a random variable to cluster together in time, are frequently observed in many financial asset prices, asset returns, and it is questioned whether the volatility of data breach occurrences are also clustered in time. We now present volatility analysis based on INGARCH models, i.e., integer-valued generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity time series model for frequency counts due to data breaches. Using the INGARCH(1, 1) model with data breach samples, we show evidence of temporal volatility clustering for data breaches. In addition, we present that the firms' volatilities are correlated between some they belong to and that such a clustering effect remains even after excluding the effect of financial covariates such as the VIX and the stock return of S&P500 that have their own volatility clustering.

This study explores the impact of stochastic volatility in option pricing. To be more specific, we compare the option pricing performance between stochastic volatility option pricing model, namely, Heston option pricing model and standard Black-Scholes option pricing. Our finding, based on the market price of SET50 index option between May 2011 and September 2020, demonstrates stochastic volatility of underlying asset return for all level of moneyness. We find that both deep in the money and deep out of the money option exhibit higher volatility comparing with out of the money, at the money, and in the money option. Hence, our finding confirms the existence of volatility smile in Thai option markets. Further, based on calibration technique, the Heston option pricing model generates smaller pricing error for all level of moneyness and time to expiration than standard Black-Scholes option pricing model, though both Heston and Black-Scholes generate large pricing error for deep-in-the-money option and option that is far from expiration. Moreover, Heston option pricing model demonstrates a better pricing accuracy for call option than put option for all level and time to expiration. In sum, our finding supports the outperformance of the Heston option pricing model over standard Black-Scholes option pricing model.

In this study, to capture the skewness and kurtosis detected in both conditional and unconditional return distributions of the stock markets of Kazakhstan and Russia, two versions of normal mixture GARCH models are employed. The data set consists of daily observations of the Kazakhstan and Russia stock prices, and world crude oil price, covering the period from 1 June 2006 through 1 March 2021. From the empirical results, incorporating the long memory effect on the returns not only provides better descriptions of dynamic behaviors of the stock market prices but also plays a significant role in improving a better understanding of the return dynamics. In addition, normal mixture models for time-varying volatility provide a better fit to the conditional densities than the usual GARCH specifications and has an important advantage that the conditional higher moments are time-varying. This implies that the volatility skews implied by normal mixture models are more likely to exhibit the features of risk and the direction of the information flow is regime-dependent. The findings of this study contain useful information for diverse purposes of cross-border stock market players such as asset allocation, portfolio management, risk management, and market regulations.

Although, in general, the random fluctuation of interest rates gives a limited impact on portfolio optimization, their stochastic nature may exert a significant influence on the process of selecting the proportions of various assets to be held in a given portfolio when the stochastic volatility of risky assets is considered. The stochastic volatility covers a variety of known models to fit in with diverse economic environments. In this paper, an optimal strategy for portfolio selection as well as the smoothness properties of the relevant value function are studied with the dynamic programming method under a market model of both stochastic volatility and stochastic interest rates.
This study examines the impact of sentiment shock, which is defined as a stochastic innovation to the Housing Market Confidence Index (HMCI) that is orthogonal to past housing price changes, on aggregate housing price changes and housing price volatility. This paper documents empirical evidence that sentiment shock has a statistically significant relationship with Korea's aggregate housing price changes. Specifically, the key findings show that an increase in sentiment shock predicts a rise in the aggregate housing price and a drop in its volatility at the national level. For the Seoul Metropolitan Region (SMR), this study also suggests that sentiment shock is positively associated with one-month-ahead aggregate housing price changes, whereas an increase in sentiment volatility tends to increase housing price volatility as well. In addition, the out-of-sample forecasting exercises conducted here reveal that the prediction model endowed with sentiment shock and sentiment volatility outperforms other competing prediction models.
This paper contributes to the ongoing controversy over price and volatility spillovers across countries by providing new evidence with the futures data of the S&P 500 and Nikkei 225 index futures contacts from January 3, 1990 to April 16, 1996. Based on the two-stage symmetric and asymmetric GARCH models we document that both the U.S. and the Japanese daytime returns significantly influence the subsequent overnight returns of the other market. We find no signs of volatility spillovers between two international markets with the symmetric model. However, with the asymmetric models, we find that the magnitude of foreign negative shocks are different from the positive ones. The findings generally suggest that the two markets are more sensitive to the bad news originating in the other market. This nature of transmission between two markets would have important implications to the arbitragers who are trying to exploit the short-term dynamics of price and volatility movements across two security markets.

Forecasting prices in electricity markets is critical for consumers and producers in planning their operations and managing their price risk. We utilize the generalized autoregressive conditionally heteroskedastic (GARCH) method to forecast the electricity prices in two regions of New York: New York City and Central New York State. We contrast the one-day forecasts of the GARCH against techniques such as dynamic regression, transfer function models, and exponential smoothing. We also examine the effect on our forecasting of omitting some of the extreme values in the electricity prices. We show that accounting for the extreme values and the heteroskedactic variance in the electricity price time-series can significantly improve the accuracy of the forecasting. Additionally, we document the higher volatility in New York City electricity prices. Differences in volatility between regions are important in the pricing of electricity options and for analyzing market performance.
Multivariate GARCH models are interested in conditional variances (volatilities) as well as conditional correlations between return time series. This paper is concerned with high-frequency multivariate financial time series from which realized volatilities and realized conditional correlations of intra-day returns are calculated. Existing multivariate GARCH models are reviewed comparatively with the realized volatility via canonical correlations and value at risk (VaR). Korean stock prices are analysed for illustration.
