A Corpus-Based Study on the Vocabulary Development of Korean Learners

  • This study identifies the vocabulary usage patterns of Korean heritage language learners. We analyzed the interlanguage of the Korean heritage language learners and examined their vocabulary usage patterns, especially the major content keywords being used at their respective proficiency levels. The Korean Learner's Corpus from the National Institute of Korean Language is used for the data analysis. We found that as the heritage language learners' proficiency increases, low-frequency (high-level) vocabulary is often used as the keywords and the semantic vocabulary areas expand from daily to social to specialized fields. It is therefore confirmed that the vocabulary use of Korean heritage language learners develops as their proficiency increases. This study confirms the development of Korean vocabulary in Korean heritage language learners and exemplifies how corpus-based applied linguistic research and computer science can be integrated using a keyword extraction algorithm.

걸음마기 영아의 기질과 어머니의 양육행동이 영아의 어휘발달에 미치는 영향력에 관한 연구 (A Study of the Effects of Toddler's Temperament and Mother's Parenting Behavior on the Development of Vocabulary Ability)

  • 본 연구에서는 걸음마기 영아의 기질과 어머니 양육행동이 영아의 어휘력 발달에 미치는 영향력을 살펴보고자 하였다. 연구대상은 전라북도 I시에 위치한 47개 어린이집의 18~24개월 영아 299명과 어머니이다. 연구결과 첫째, 영아의 기질과 어휘력의 관계를 기질의 구성차원별로 살펴보면, 접근-회피와 적응성, 기분은 이해 및 표현어휘와 부적 상관관계를 보였고, 반응강도는 이해어휘와 정적 상관관계를 보였다. 둘째, 어머니의 양육행동과 어휘력의 관계를 어머니 양육행동의 하위요인별로 살펴보면, 교수적 양육행동과 긍정한계선 설정 양육행동은 이해 및 표현어휘와 정적 상관관계를 보였다. 셋째, 영아의 어휘력 발달에 대한 영아의 기질과 어머니 양육행동을 영향력을 알아본 결과, 이해어휘에 대해서는 접근-회피의 설명력이 가장 높았고, 다음은 교수적 양육행동, 반응강도, 기분의 순으로 설명력이 나타났다. 표현어휘에 대해서는 교수적 양육행동의 설명력이 가장 높았고, 기분, 반응강도, 활동성 순으로 설명력이 나타났다. 영아 어휘력 발달에 있어서 이해어휘는 영아의 기질인 접근-회피가, 표현어휘는 어머니 양육행동인 교수적 양육행동의 영향력이 가장 큰 변임임이 밝혀져, 어머니는 영아의 이해어휘 발달을 위해 기질에 적합한 상호작용과 표현어휘 발달을 위해 사물과 사건의 특성에 대해 말로 표현해 주는 양육행동을 하여야겠다.

영아의 차례 맡기와 어휘발달 관계에 대한 단기 종단연구 (One Year Longitudinal Study of the Relationship between Infants' Turn-Taking and Vocabulary Development)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between infants' turn-taking and vocabulary development during a one-year longitudinal study. Participants of this study included 46 infants who participated in both of the 1st and the 2nd tests. The infants' turn-taking frequencies were observed during mother-infant's free play for 10 minutes. The infants' vocabulary was investigated with MCDI-K for the 1st test and PRES for the 2nd test. The collected data were analyzed using both t-test and Pearson's correlation. The research results were as follows: First, the turn-taking frequencies and vocabulary of infants increased with age groups. Second, there was positive relationship between the turn-taking and the receptive vocabulary in group A at T1. Third, there were significant differences in receptive vocabulary at T1 and expressive vocabulary at T2 among group A according to the infants' turn-taking levels.

스마트폰 기반 영어 어휘 상황학습 에이전트 개발 (Development of a English Vocabulary Context-Learning Agent based on Smartphone)

  • Recently, mobile application for english vocabulary learning is being developed actively. However, most mobile English vocabulary learning applications did not effectively connected with the technical advantages of mobile learning. Also,the study of mobile english vocabulary learning app are still insufficient. Therefore, this paper development a english vocabulary context-learning Agent that can practice context learning more reasonably using a location-based service, a character recognition technology and augmented reality technology based on smart phones. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed agent, we have measured the precision and usability. As results of experiments, the precision of learning vocabulary is 89% and 'Match between system and the real world', 'User control and freedom', 'Recognition rather than recall', 'Aesthetic and minimalist design' appeared to be respectively 3.91, 3.80, 3.85, 4.01 in evaluation of usability. It were obtained significant results.

Novice Corpus Users' Gains and Views on Corpus-based Lexical Development: A Case Study of COVID-19-related Expressions

  • Recently, corpus assisted vocabulary instruction has been attracting a lot of interest. Most studies have focused on understanding language learners' receptive vocabulary knowledge. Limited attention has been paid to learners' productive competence. To fill this gap, this study attended to learners' productive lexical development in terms of form, meaning and use respectively. This study introduced EFL learners to the corpus-based language pedagogy to learn COVID-19 theme-based vocabulary. To investigate the gains and views of 33 EFL first-year college students, a sentence completion task and a questionnaire were developed. Learners' productive performances in the three lexical knowledge aspects (i.e., form, meaning and use) were particularly targeted. The results revealed that the students achieved significant gains in all aspects regardless of their proficiency level. In particular, the less proficient students achieved greater knowledge retention compared with their highly proficient counterparts. Meanwhile, students showed positive attitudes towards the corpus-based approach to vocabulary learning.

A Study on the Academic vocabulary Education for Content-Based Korean Language Education: A Basic Study for Online Dictionary Development

  • 이 연구는 내용 중심 한국어 교육을 위해 학술어휘를 어떻게 교육할 것인지에 대한 방안으로 온라인 학술어휘 사전을 개발할 것을 제안한다. 학문 목적 한국어 학습자가 대학 수학 과정에서 접하게 되는 내용 중심 한국어 교육을 위한 학술적 텍스트에는 다양한 학술어휘가 존재한다. 학술어휘를 모르고서는 학문적 내용을 이해하거나 생산할 수 없다. 따라서 그들이 처한 교육적 환경을 고려하여 그들에게 가장 적합한 방식으로 학술어휘를 교육해 교육적 효율성을 높이는 것이 한국어 교육의 과제 중 하나가 되었다. 이에 대한 대안으로 본고는 온라인 학술어휘 사전 개발에 앞서 온라인 학술어휘 사전에는 어떠한 내용이 어떠한 방식으로 담겨야 하는지에 대한 기초 연구를 수행하고자 한다. 온라인 학술어휘 사전은 교실 안으로 한정되어 있던 교육을 교실 안팎으로 자연스럽게 연결하게 해 교육 현장이 갖는 어휘 교육의 한계를 극복하고 교육적 효과를 극대화할 수 있다.

걸음마기 한국아동의 어휘발달 : 단어유목, 어휘구성, 성 차 및 개인차에 관한 기초분석 (Vocabulary in Korean-Speaking Toddlers : A Preliminary Analysis of Word Class, Composition, Gender, and Individual Variation)

  • Mothers of 58 20-month-olds in Seoul, the Republic of Korea, completed vocabulary checklists for their children. When vocabulary level was taken into account, children's vocabularies contained relatively greater proportions of nouns than other word classes, and more verbs than adjectives or closed-class words. Correlations among word classes showed that each word class was consistently positively correlated with every other class. Girls' vocabularies showed evidence of being larger than boys. Large individual differences in the sizes of children's vocabularies were found. Factors that influence vocabulary size and can account for gender and individual differences are discussed. Noun prevalence in the vocabularies of children learning to speak Korean, and the merits of several theories that may account for this word-class prevalence pattern, are evaluated.

7~24개월 영아의 의사소통적 몸짓과 어휘 습득간의 관계 (The Relationship Between the Communicative Gesture and the Vocabulary Acquisition of Infants)

  • This study examined variability of gestures and their correlation with vocabulary acquisition in the communication of infants. Subjects were 96 infants, 7 to 24 months of age, residing in Seoul and its vicinity. Instruments were the Communication and Symbolic Behavior Scales (Iverson, et al., 1999) and the MacAuther Communicative Development Inventory-Korean (Bae and Lim, 2002). Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Pearson's Correlation. Results identified monthly changes in types of communicative gesture used by infants: more deictic at younger and more representational at older ages. Deictic gestures were related to size of the receptive vocabulary and size of the whole vocabulary. Representational gestures were related to acquisition of expressive vocabulary, size of the receptive, and size of the whole vocabulary.

구개열 아동의 초기 어휘에 나타난 음운 특성 연구 (Phonological Characteristics of Early Vocabulary in Young Children with Cleft Palate)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate whether young children with cleft palate differ from those of noncleft typically developing children in terms of expressive vocabulary size, phonological characteristics and lexical selectivity. A total of 12 children with cleft palate and 12 noncleft children who were matched by age and gender participated in the study. The groups were compared by size of expressive vocabulary reported on Korean version of MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories and the number of different words, consonant inventory, the percentage of words beginning with obstruents and vowels, nasal, and glottal sounds, and the percentage of words which do not include obstruents in a language sample. Also, correlation analysis were performed to examine the relationship between measures on size of expressive vocabulary and phonological characteristics. The results showed that expressive vocabulary size and consonant inventory for children with cleft palate produced significantly smaller than those for noncleft children. Children with cleft palate produced significantly more words beginning with vowel or which do not include obstruents, and fewer words beginning with obstruents than noncleft children. The two groups showed different results on significant correlations between measures on size of expressive vocabulary and phonological characteristics indicating that children with cleft palate show different lexical selectivity from their noncleft peers. The results suggest that children with cleft palate aged 18-30 months demonstrate a slower rate of lexical and phonological development compared with their noncleft peers and they develop lexical selectivity reflecting cleft palate speech. The results will have a clinical implication on speech-language intervention for young children with cleft palates.

어휘 지도 방법이 어휘 학습전략 사용과 정의적 측면에 미치는 효과: 학생 설문 조사 분석을 중심으로 (The effects of a vocabulary instructional method on vocabulary learning strategy use and the affective domain: Focus on an analysis of students' survey responses)

  • This study investigated the effects of collocation-based vocabulary instruction for the experimental group (G2). It was compared to the traditional wordlist-based vocabulary instruction for the control group (G1). This results reflect the development of low level high school EFL learners' vocabulary learning strategy use and the positive change in the affective domain. In the analysis of the survey responses, G1 and G2 did not differ significantly on the first questionnaire. They did, however, differ significantly on the second questionnaire. G2 used more strategies to discover and to consolidate the meaning of the words by means of combining words. In terms of the affective domain, G2 participated more actively in the learning activities, which had a significant effect on vocabulary growth, memory, self-confidence, motivation, and cooperative learning. This is attributable to the fact that G2 was more inquisitive, interested, challenged, participatory, cooperative, and attentive than G1 in performing the vocabulary task activities. Moreover, the data collected from the questionnaire showed that G2 performed more interactive and dynamic activities in solving the given tasks.
