폐경기 여성의 혈청 과산화지질 농도에 따른 항산화비타민의 영양상태 (The Nutritional Status of Antioxidant Vitamins in Relation to Serum MDA Level in Postmenopausal Women)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the nutritional status of antioxidant vitamins in relation to serum malondialdehye(MDA) level in postmenopausal women with common occurance of cardiovascular disease(CVD). Data about general characteristics including smoking, drinking and exercise status, dietary intake and serum level of antioxidant vitamins, and serum MDA level were collected from eighty-five postmenopausal women. Mean serum MDA level was 1.62$\pm$0.03nmol/ml, and general characteristics and serum lipid profiles were not significantly different among the three group: low MDA(<1.45nmol/ml), midium MDA(1.45-1.74nmol/ml) and high MDA($\geq$1.74nmol/ml). Total mean vitamin A intake was 472.8$\pm$37.7RE, 68% of RDA, vitamin C intake was 134.3$\pm$8.7mg, 192% of RDA and vitamin E intake was 8.6$\pm$0.5mg, 86% of RDA for Korean. In takes of antioxidant vitamins from the diet were not significantly different among the three groups. However significant negative correlation(r=-0.242, p<0.05) was observed between vitamin E intake and serum MDA level in total subjects. Total mean serum vitamin A, $\beta$-carotene and vitamin C level were 0.59$\pm$0.01$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml, 0.25$\pm$0.01$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml and 9.02$\pm$0.28$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml, respectively. Total mean serum vitamin E and vitamin E/total cholesterol level were 9.15$\pm$0.42$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml and 4.09$\pm$0.17$\mu\textrm{g}$/mg, respectively. Serum antioxidant vitamins levels were not significantly different among the three groups. However serum vitamin C and E level were negatively correlated to serum MDA level. We can conclude that it will be helpful for postmenopausal women with common occurance of CVD to improve nutritional status of antioxidant vitamins by increasing intakes of antioxidant vitamins, especially vitamin C and E. 청주ㆍ안성지역 모유영양아의 수유기간별 비타민 A 섭취량 (Vitamin A Intake of Exclusively Breast-Fed Infants in Cheongju and Anseong areas)

  • This study was longitudinally conducted to evaluate vitamin A intake of exclusively breast-fed infants compared with the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) for Korean infants. Twenty-seven Korean lactating women and their infants during the first 6 months of lactation in Cheongju and Anseong areas were participated. Retinol and $\beta$-carotene contents in the milk were determined using HPLC and also the milk consumption of the infants was measured by the test-weighing methods. Vitamin A (retinol and $\beta$-carotene) contents of the milk were 65.7, 57.2, 48.1, 43.9, 38.2, 38.7 and 44.0 R.E./100 ml, and vitamin A intakes of the breast-fed infants were 361, 402, 348, 331, 304, 305 and 322 R.E./day at 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 month of lactation, respectively. The average intake of vitamin A was 339.1 R.E./day and the percentage to RDA was 96.9% during 6 months. Vitamin A intakes per body weight of the breast-fed infants were 96.7, 88.3, 62.1, 50.0, 41.8, 39.3 and 39.6 R.E./kg/day at 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 month. The body weight increased normally from 3.4 $\pm$ 0.5 kg at birth during lactation. It is suggested that the breast-fed infants in Cheongju and Anseong areas consumed adequately vitamin A from the milk compared with RDA for Korean infants.

수유초기 이행유중 비타민 A의 함량, 분비량 및 영야의 섭취량의 변화 (Changs of Vitamin A Concentration, Secretion and Ingake of Infants in Transitional Milk during the Lactation)

  • The longitudinal change of vitamin A concentration and secretion in transitional milk of 32 Korean lactating wormen and vitamin A intake of infants were studied 7, 10 and 15 days postpartum. Retinol concentration of the milk averaged 93.6$\pm$47.1, 80.1$\pm$41.6 and 66.7$\pm$33.5$\mu\textrm{g}$/100ml at 7, 10 and 15 days postpartum respectively and showed decreasing trend in total mothers. $\beta$-carotene concentration showed similar decreasing trend averaged 13.4$\pm$10.6, 8.2$\pm$4.6 and 5.3$\pm$3.4$\mu\textrm{g}$/100ml respectively. Vitamin A concentration decreased with the respective amount of 94.9$\pm$47.1, 80.5$\pm$41.5 and 67.3$\pm$33.0 R.E../100ml during the lactation. The average vitamin A secretion in the milk of all mothers appeared 410.0 R.E/day. Vitamin A secretion of multiparae (450.1 R.E./100ml) appeared not significantly higher than those of primiparae(370.0 R.E./100ml). The average vitamin A intake of infants in the milk averaged 333.7 R.E./day and was 95.3% of RDA for infants. Vitamin A intake per body weight of infants in the milk averaged 110.6, 91.9 and 79.2 R.E./kg/day respectively.

The Role of Some Vitamins in Respiratory-related Viral Infections: A Narrative Review

  • This study aimed to find out the effect of vitamins on respiratory-related viral infections, including coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), through the literature reviews. From January 2000 to June 2021, the studies (cohort studies, cross-sectional studies, case-control studies, randomized control trials) related to vitamins (vitamin A, D, E, C, B6, folate, and B12) and COVID-19/severe acute respiratory syndrome/Middle East respiratory syndrome/cold/influenza were selected from the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane libraries and analyzed. The relationship between vitamins and virus-related respiratory diseases was identified. Through the review, 39 studies were selected on vitamin D, one study on vitamin E, 11 studies on vitamin C, and 3 studies on folate. Regarding COVID-19, 18 studies on vitamin D, 4 studies on vitamin C, and 2 studies on folate showed significant effects of the intake of these nutrients in preventing COVID-19. Regarding colds and influenza, 3 studies on vitamin D, 1 study on vitamin E, 3 studies on vitamin C, and 1 study on folate demonstrated that the intake of these nutrients significantly prevents these diseases. Therefore, this review suggested the intake of vitamins D, E, C, and folate is important for preventing respiratory diseases related to viruses, such as COVID-19, colds, and influenza. The relationship between these nutrients and virus-related respiratory diseases should be continuously monitored in the future.

Vitamin E status of 20- to 59-year-old adults living in the Seoul metropolitan area of South Korea

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin and functions primarily as a lipid antioxidant. Inadequate vitamin E status may increase risk of several chronic diseases. Thus, the objectives of this study were to estimate intake and plasma concentration of each tocopherol and to evaluate vitamin E status of Korean adults. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Three consecutive 24-h food recalls and fasting blood samples were collected from healthy 20- to 59-y-old adults (33 males and 73 females) living in the Seoul metropolitan area, South Korea. ${\alpha}$-, ${\beta}$-, ${\delta}$-, and ${\gamma}$-tocopherol intakes and plasma concentrations of tocopherols (${\alpha}$-, ${\delta}$-, and ${\gamma}$- tocopherol) were analyzed by gender. RESULTS: Dietary vitamin E and total vitamin E intake (dietary plus supplemental vitamin E) was $17.68{\pm}14.34$ and $19.55{\pm}15.78mg$ ${\alpha}$-tocopherol equivalents, respectively. The mean daily ${\alpha}$-tocopherol, and ${\gamma}$-tocopherol intakes were $3.07{\pm}2.27mg$ and $5.98{\pm}3.74mg$, respectively. Intakes of total vitamin E and each tocopherol of males were significantly higher than those of females (P < 0.05). Plasma ${\alpha}$-tocopherol concentration was $15.45{\pm}10.16$ of males and $15.00{\pm}4.54{\mu}mol/L$ of females, respectively. There were no significant differences in plasma tocopherol concentrations by gender ($P{\geq}0.05$). Plasma ${\alpha}$-tocopherol was negatively correlated with ${\gamma}$-tocopherol intake (P < 0.05). Twenty-three percent of the subjects had plasma ${\alpha}$-tocopherol concentrations < $12{\mu}mol/L$ indicating a biochemical deficiency of vitamin E. Approximately 8% and 9% of these participants had plasma ${\alpha}$-tocopherol:total lipid ratio less than $1.59{\mu}mol/mmol$ and plasma ${\alpha}$-tocopherol:total cholesterol ratio less than $2.22{\mu}mol/mmol$, respectively, which are also indicative of vitamin E deficiency. CONCLUSIONS: Vitamin E intakes of Korean adults were generally adequate with the Korean Dietary Reference Intakes for vitamin E. However, ${\alpha}$-tocopherol intake was lower than that reported in other countries, and 23% of the subjects in the current study were vitamin E deficient based on plasma ${\alpha}$-tocopherol concentrations.

충북지역 초등학생의 비타민 A식이 섭취실태와 영양상태 진단 (Nutritional Status and Dietary Intake of Vitamin A in Primary School Children - 5th and 6th Grade Students in Chunghuk -)

  • The purposes of this study are to evaluate nutritional status and dietary intake of vitamin A in 5th and 6th grade primary school children in Chungbuk. Also the relationships between nutritional status and factors relevant to dietary intake of vitamin A were examined. For the study, total 180 children in urban area of Chongju city(37 boys and 40 girls) and rural area of Eumsong gun(56 boys and 47 girls) were recruited. For the assessment of dietary nutrients intake including vitamin A, 1-day, 24-hr recall method was applied. And serum retinol contents were analyzed by HPLC to diagnose the nutritional status of vitamin A. The average of daily vitamin A intake was 490R.E., 81.8% of RDA. Vitamin A intake of urban was higher than that of rural children(p < 0.001). Of the total dietary vitamin A intake, only 25.8% came from animal retinol, means that children still heavily depend on plant carotenoids as vitamin A floods. The average serum retinol concentration of total 180 children was 37.2$\mu\textrm{g}$/100ml. Serum retinol concentration of urban children was 37.3$\mu\textrm{g}$/100m1, significantly higher than rural children of 35.6$\mu\textrm{g}$/100m1(p < 0.05). According to the biochemical criteria, no one was in critical vitamin A nutritional status. Because of relatively large day-to-day vitamin A intake, 1-day, 24-hr recall method may not be the proper way to assess the usual intake of vitamin A. In conclusion , to diagnose the nutritional status of vitamin A by dietary survey, it is necessary to develop new survey technique which measure the dietary habit of the people.

폐절제술을 받은 폐암환자의 영양섭취 상태와 수술 후 폐합병증 (Nutritional Intake and Postoperative Pulmonary Complications among Lung Cancer Patients who Underwent Pulmonary Resection)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the nutritional intake status of the lung cancer patients who underwent pulmonary resection and to analyze the relationship between the status of the nutritional intake and the occurrence of postoperative pulmonary complications. Methods: This study was a secondary analysis to determine whether the changes in the nutritional intake after surgery were related to pulmonary complications. Data of a total of 89 patients were included in the analysis and the nutritional intake status was confirmed using a 24-hour dietary recall method. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, chi-square or Fisher's exact test, and ANOVA using the SPSS WIN 26.0 program and word clouds were generated using the R software program. Results: Overall, a decrease in the postoperative nutritional intake was observed in the patients who underwent pulmonary resection, except for the intake of fat. The pulmonary complications were identified to be associated with BMI and the presence of comorbidity. Twenty-three out of 74 patients with vitamin E levels below the Estimated Average Requirements developed pulmonary complications after surgery. Conclusion: Lung cancer patients who underwent pulmonary resection generally have difficulty in acquiring appropriate nutritional intake and need balanced nutritional management. Future investigations on the impact of increased vitamin E intake on postoperative pulmonary complications may provide better insight into the relationship between vitamin E intake and pulmonary complication among patients who underwent pulmonary resection.

젊은 한국여성에서 붉은고추의 섭취량, 캡사이신 역치, 영양소 섭취량 및 신체계측치간의 관련성 (Relationship between Red Pepper Intake, Capsaicin Threshold, Nutrient Intake, and Anthropometric Measurements in Young Korean Women)

  • The effects of the amount of red pepper intake per a day on the capsaicin threshold, nutrient intake, and anthropo-metric measurements were investigated in 100 female students of university. Three 24-hour recalls were performed to estimate usual nutrient and red pepper intake of free-living participants. The solutions containing capsaicin at concentration of 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5ppm used for the evaluation of hot-taste detection threshold. Subjects were asked to recognize the burning sensation after tasting l0ml of each test solution in ascending order of capsaicin concentrations. Mean intake of red pepper was 4.6 g/d and the capsaicin threshold was 0.27 ppm. The detection threshold for capsaicin was correlated with the amount of pepper intake per a day. Red pepper intake was correlated with energy, protein, lipid, carbohydrate, Iron, vitamin A, vitamin B$_2$ niacin, and vitamin E intakes. However, it was not correlated with intake of calcium, vitamin B$_1$ or vitamin C. The red pepper intake was negatively correlated with fat mass and waist girth and the capsaicin threshold was also negatively correlated with pulse. In conclusion, red pepper intake was associated with nutrient intake and capsaicin threshold whereas it was negatively correlated with fat mass and waist girth.

한국 성인의 비타민 E 섭취량 및 급원식품군의 현황 및 추이 : 제 1~6기 국민건강 영양조사 자료를 이용하여 (Current status and trends in estimated intakes and major food groups of vitamin E among Korean adults: Using the 1~6th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey)

  • 본 연구에서는 한국 성인의 비타민 E 섭취량과 기여식품군의 현황 및 추이를 확인하기 위하여 제1~6기 국민건강영양조사에 참여한 19세 이상 성인 69,665명의 24시간 회상 자료를 한국인 상용식품의 비타민 E 함량 데이터베이스와 연계하여 ${\alpha}-$, ${\beta}-$, ${\gamma}-$, ${\delta}-$토코페롤 및 비타민 E 섭취량을 추정하였다. 그 결과 비타민 E의 섭취량은 1998년도 이후 꾸준히 증가하였으며, 2013~2015년의 비타민 E 섭취량은 남성 $7.5mg\;{\alpha}-TE/d$, 여성 $6.4mg\;{\alpha}-TE/d$였음을 알 수 있었다. 각 식품군별 비타민 E 섭취 기여율을 산출하였을 때에는 채소류, 곡류, 난류 순으로 기여율이 높았고, 시간에 따른 추이를 보았을 때에는 채소류의 기여율은 감소하였고 난류의 기여율은 증가하였다. 2015 한국인 영양소 섭취기준을 이용해 본 연구에서 추정한 한국 성인의 비타민 E 섭취량을 평가한 결과, 비타민 E의 평균 섭취량이 충분섭취량에 미치지 못하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 섭취 부족현상은 연령이 높고 교육수준 및 소득수준이 낮을수록 뚜렷하였다. 따라서 이러한 영양취약계층을 대상으로 비타민 E의 기능 및 급원식품을 교육할 필요성이 있다고 사료된다. 본 연구에서 체계적인 방법으로 추정한 한국 성인의 비타민 E 섭취량은 한국인 영양소 섭취기준의 개정을 위한 근거자료로 사용될 수 있을 것이나, 한국인 상용식품 내 다양한 형태의 비타민 E 함량을 분석하는 후속 연구가 수행되면, 더욱 정확한 비타민 E 섭취량 추정값을 얻을 수 있을 것이다.

고령자 심리 및 신체장애와 영양소 섭취와의 관계 -제 8기 국민건강영양조사 자료 이용- (Relationship between Psychological and Physical Disability and Nutrient Intake in the Elderly -The 8th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey-)

  • This study provides basic data when planning nutrition support for healthy aging by revealing the relationship between various symptoms in the elderly and nutrient intake. From the 8th National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, data from senior citizens aged 65 years or older in 2021 were used, and answers on the depression prevalence, activity restrictions, complaints of discomfort when chewing, and nutrient intake were analyzed through SPSS multiple logistic regression analysis. In the case of depression, there was a significant effect on the intake of four of the 20 nutrients (water, protein, cholesterol, and vitamin E). When experiencing activity restrictions, the intake of eight of the 20 nutrients (phosphorus, magnesium, vitamin A, vitamin D, beta-carotene, retinol, thiamine, and niacin) was affected. When experiencing chewing discomfort, the intake of three of the 20 nutrients (fat, magnesium, and vitamin E) was affected. Elderly people who suffer from depression, activity restrictions, and discomfort with chewing are at risk of various nutrient deficiencies, and related studies need to be conducted.
