Biological sensory systems continuously monitor and analyze changes in real-world environments that are relevant to an animal's specific behavioral needs and goals. Understanding the sensory mechanisms and information processing principles that biological systems utilize for efficient sensory data acquisition may provide useful guidance for the design of smart-sensing systems in engineering applications. Weakly electric fish, which use self-generated electrical energy to actively sense their environment, provide an excellent model system for studying biological principles of sensory data acquisition. The electrosensory system enables these fish to hunt and navigate at night without the use of visual cues. To achieve reliable, real-time task performance, the electrosensory system implements a number of smart sensing strategies, including efficient stimulus encoding, multi-scale virtual sensor arrays, task-dependent filtering and online subtraction of sensory expectation.
The extraction of earthquake damage from remote sensed imagery requires high spatial resolution and temporal effectiveness of acquisition of imagery. The analog photographs and visual interpretation were taken traditionally. Now it is possible to acquire damage information from many commercial high resolution RS satellites. The key techniques are processing velocity and precision. The authors developed the automatic / semiautomatic image process techniques including feature enhancement, and classification, designed the emergency Earthquake Damage and Losses Evaluate System based on Remote Sensing (RSEDLES). The paper introduced the functions of RSEDLES as well as its application to the earthquakes occurred recently.
Unlike rigid parts, flexible parts can be deformed by contact force during assembly. In robotic assembly, information about their deformation as well as possible misalignment between the holes and their respective mating parts is essential for successful assembly. This paper presents a method to design a visual sensing system for measuring parts deformation and misalignment in flexible parts assembly. This paper performs ray-trace analysis of the system. A series of experiments for flexible parts assembly by using the implemented system are performed.
The MODerate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensor has 36 bands at 250m, 500m, 1km spatial resolution. However, 500m or 1km MODIS data exhibits a few limitations when low resolution data is applied at small areas that possess complex land cover types. In this study, we produce seven 250m spectral bands by fusing two MODIS 250m bands into five 500m bands. In order to recommend the best fusion method by which one acquires MODIS data, we compare seven fusion methods including the Brovey transform, principle components algorithm (PCA) fusion method, the Gram-Schmidt fusion method, the least mean and variance matching method, the least square fusion method, the discrete wavelet fusion method, and the wavelet-PCA fusion method. Results of the above fusion methods are compared using various evaluation indicators such as correlation, relative difference of mean, relative variation, deviation index, peak signal-to-noise ratio index and universal image quality index, as well as visual interpretation method. Among various fusion methods, the local mean and variance matching method provides the best fusion result for the visual interpretation and the evaluation indicators. The fusion algorithm of 250m MODIS data may be used to effectively improve the accuracy of various MODIS land products.
This study introduces a method of estimating the 3D coordinates of structural damage from the detection results of visual inspection provided in 2D image coordinates using sensing data of UAV and 3D shape information of BIM. This estimation process takes place in a virtual space and utilizes the BIM model, so it is possible to immediately identify which member of the structure the estimated location corresponds to. Difference from conventional structural damage localization methods that require 3D scanning or additional sensor attachment, it is a method that can be applied locally and rapidly. Measurement accuracy was calculated through the distance difference between the measured position measured by TLS (Terrestrial Laser Scanner) and the estimated position calculated by the method proposed in this study, which can determine the applicability of this study and the direction of future research.
In biological cell manipulation, manual thrust or penetration of an injection pipette into an egg is currently performed by a skilled operator, relying only on visual feedback information. Massive load of various micro injection of either genes, fluid or cells in the postgenomic era calls a more reliable and automatic micro injection system that can test hundreds of genes or cell types at a single experiment. We initiated to study cellular force sensing in zebrafish eggs as the first step for the development of a more controllable micro injection system by any inexperienced operator. Zebrafish eggs at different developmental stages were collected and an integrated biomanipulation system was employed to measure cellular force during penetrating the egg envelope, the chorion. First of all, the biomanipulation system integrated with cellular force sensing instrument is implemented to measure the penetration force of cell membranes and characterize mechanical properties of zebrafish embryo cells. Furthermore, implementation of cellular force sensing system and calibration are presented. Finally, the cellular force sensing of penetrating cell membranes at each developmental stages was experimentally performed. The results demonstrated that the biomanipulation system with force sensing capability can measure cellular force at real-time while the injection operation is undergoing. The magnitude of the measured force was in the range of several hundreds of uN. The precise real-time measurement should provide the first step forwards for the development of an automatic and reliable injection system of various materials into biological cells.
As the launches of a series of remote sensing satellites, there are various multiresolution and multi-spectral images available nowadays. This diversity in remotely sensed image data has created a need to be able to integrate data from different sources. The C-band imaging radar of ERS-2 due to its high sensitivity to coastal wetlands holds tremendous potential in mapping and monitoring coastal wetland features. This paper investigates the advantages of using ERS-2 SAR data combined with IRS-ID LISS-3 data for mapping complex coastal wetland features of Tamil Nadu, southern India. We present a methodology in this paper that highlights the mapping potential of different combinations of filtering and integration techniques. The methodology adopted here consists of three major steps as following: (i) speckle noise reduction by comparative performance of different filtering algorithms, (ii) geometric rectification and coregistration, and (iii) application of different integration techniques. The results obtained from the analysis of optical and microwave image data have proved their potential use in improving interpretability of different coastal wetland features of southern India. Based visual and statistical analyzes, this study suggests that brovey transform will perform well in terms of preserving spatial and spectral content of the original image data. It was also realized that speckle filtering is very important before fusing optical and microwave data for mapping coastal mangrove wetland ecosystem.
In the last decade, artificial intelligence's dramatic advancement with the development of various deep learning techniques has significantly contributed to remote sensing fields and satellite image applications. Among many prominent areas, super-resolution research has seen substantial growth with the release of several benchmark datasets and the rise of generative adversarial network-based studies. However, most previously published remote sensing benchmark datasets represent spatial resolution within approximately 10 meters, imposing limitations when directly applying for super-resolution of small objects with cm unit spatial resolution. Furthermore, if the dataset lacks a global spatial distribution and is specialized in particular land covers, the consequent lack of feature diversity can directly impact the quantitative performance and prevent the formation of robust foundation models. To overcome these issues, this paper proposes a method to generate benchmark datasets by simulating the modulation transfer functions of the sensor. The proposed approach leverages the simulation method with a solid theoretical foundation, notably recognized in image fusion. Additionally, the generated benchmark dataset is applied to state-of-the-art super-resolution base models for quantitative and visual analysis and discusses the shortcomings of the existing datasets. Through these efforts, we anticipate that the proposed benchmark dataset will facilitate various super-resolution research shortly in Korea.

This paper integrates human visual system (HVS) characteristics into compressed sensing recovery of color images. The proposed visual weighting of each color channel in group-sparsity minimization not only pursues sparsity level of image but also reflects HVS characteristics well. Additionally, an edge-preserving filter is embedded in the scheme to remove noise while preserving edges of image so that quality of reconstructed image is further enhanced. Experimental results show that the average PSNR of the proposed method is 0.56 ~ 4dB higher than that of the state-of-the art group-sparsity minimization method. These results prove the excellence of the proposed method in both terms of objective and subjective qualities.
The main object of this study was to prove the effectiveness of different merging methods by using the high resolution IRS(Indian Remote Sensing Satellite)-1C panchromatic data and the multispectral Landsat TM data. The five methods used to merging the information contents of each of the satellite data were the intensity-hue-saturation(IHS), principal component analysis(PCA), high pass filter(HPF), ratio enhancement method and look-up-table(LUT) procedures. Two measures are used to evaluate the merging method. These measures include visual inspection and comparisons of the mean, standard deviation and root mean square error between merged image and original image data values of each band. The ratio enhancement method was well preserved the spectral characteristics of the data. From visual inspection, PCA method provide the best result, HPF next, ratio enhancement, IHS and LUT method the worst for the preservation of spatial resolution.
