  • Odometry is the critical factor to estimate the location of the robot. In the mobile robot with wheels, odometry can be performed using the information from the encoder. However, the information of location in the encoder is inaccurate because of the errors caused by the wheel's alignment or slip. In general, visual odometer has been used to compensate for the kinetic errors of robot. In case of using the visual odometry under some robot system, the kinetic analysis is required for compensation of errors, which means that the conventional visual odometry cannot be easily applied to the implementation of the other type of the robot system. In this paper, the novel visual odometry, which employs only the single camera toward the ground, is proposed. The camera is mounted at the center of the bottom of the mobile robot. Feature points of the ground image are extracted by using median filter and color contrast filter. In addition, the linear and angular vectors of the mobile robot are calculated with feature points matching, and the visual odometry is performed by using these linear and angular vectors. The proposed odometry is verified through the experimental results of driving tests using the encoder and the new visual odometry.

  • This paper looks at the development of the visual system of robots, and the development of image processing algorism to measure the size of an object and the distance from robot to an object for the visual system. Robots usually get the visual systems with a camera for measuring the size of an object and the distance to an object. The visual systems are accurately impossible the size and distance in case of that the locations of the systems is changed and the objects are not on the ground. Thus, in this paper, we developed robot's visual system to measure the size of an object and the distance to an object using two cameras and two-degree robot mechanism. And, we developed the image processing algorism to measure the size of an object and the distance from robot to an object for the visual system, and finally, carried out the characteristics test of the developed visual system. As a result, it is thought that the developed system could accurately measure the size of an object and the distance to an object.

  • In this paper, we present a new approach to visual feedback control using image-based visual servoing with stereo vision. In order to control the position and orientation of a robot with respect to an object, a new technique is proposed using binocular stereo vision. The stereo vision enables us to calculate an exact image Jacobian not only around a desired location but also at other locations. The suggested technique can guide a robot manipulator to the desired location without providing a priori knowledge such as the relative distance to the desired location or the model of an object even when the initial positioning error is large. This paper describes a model of stereo vision and how to generate feedback commands. The performance of the proposed visual servoing system is illustrated by experimental results and compared with conventional control methods for an assembly robot.

  • This paper proposes a posture stabilization control algorithm for a wheeled mobile robot using hybrid visual servo control method with a position based and an image based visual servoing (PBVS and IBVS). To overcome chattering phenomena which were shown in the previous researches using a simple switching function based on a threshold, the proposed hybrid visual servo control law introduces the fusion function based on a blending function. Then, the chattering problem and rapid motion of the mobile robot can be eliminated. Also, we consider the nonlinearity of the wheeled mobile robot unlike the previous visual servo control laws using linear control methods to improve the performances of the visual servo control law. The proposed posture stabilization control law using hybrid visual servoing is verified by a theoretical analysis and simulation and experimental results.

  • This study deals with image-based visual servoing for automatic recharging of mobile robot. Because mobile robot must be recharged periodically, it is necessary to detect and move to docking station. Generally, laser scanner is used for detect of position of docking station. CCD Camera is also used for this purpose. In case of using cameras, the position-based visual servoing method is widely used. But position-based visual servoing method requires the accurate calibration and it is hard and complex work. Another method using cameras is image-based visual servoing. Recently, image based visual servoing is widely used for robotic application. But it has a problem that cannot have linear trajectory in the 3-dimensional space. Because of this weak point, image-based visual servoing has a limit for real application. In case of 2-dimensional movement on the plane, it has also similar problem. In order to solve this problem, we point out the main reason of the problem of the resolved rate control method that has been generally used in the image-based visual servoing and we propose an image-based visual servoing method that can reduce the curved trajectory of mobile robot in the cartesian space.

  • This paper describes a visual control scheme, fuzzy logic system for visual servoing of an autonomous mobile robot. An existing communication autonomous mobile robot always needs to keep the object in image to detect the moving object. This is a problem in an autonomous mobile robot for spontaneous activity. To solve it, some features for an object are taken from an image and then use in the design of fuzzy logic system for decision of moving location and direction of visual servoing contrivance(apparatus). So continuous tracking is possible by moving the visual servoing contrivance. We present some simulation results and further studies in the Section of Simulation and Concluding Remarks.

  • The fundamental research for the mobile robot navigation using the numerical optimization method is presented. We propose an image-based visual servo navigation algorithm for a wheeled mobile robot utilizing a ceiling mounted camera. For the image-based visual servoing, we define the composite image Jacobian which represents the relationship between the speed of wheels of a mobile robot and the robot's overall speed in the image plane. The rotational speed of wheels of a mobile robot can be directly related to the overall speed of a mobile robot in the image plane using the composite image Jacobian. We define the mobile robot navigation problem as an unconstrained optimization problem to minimize the cost function with the image error between the goal position and the position of a mobile robot. In order to avoid the obstacle, the modified cost function is proposed which is composed of the image error between the position of a mobile robot and the goal position and the distance between the position of a mobile robot and the position of the obstacle. The performance was evaluated using the simulation.

  • Visual servoing is the fusion of results from many elemental areas including high-speed image processing, kinematics, dynamics, control theory, and real-time computing. It has much in common with research into active vision and structure from motion, but is quite different from the often described use of vision in hierarchical task-level robot control systems. We present a new approach to visual feedback control using image-based visual servoing with the stereo vision in this paper. In order to control the position and orientation of a robot with respect to an object, a new technique is proposed using a binocular stereo vision. This paper describes a model of stereo vision and how to generate feedback commands. The performance of the proposed visual servoing system is illustrated by the simulation and experimental results and compared with the case of conventional method for dual-arm robot made in Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.
