  • This study investigates the characteristics of visual working memory (VWM) representations by examining two theoretical models: the integrated-object and the parallel-independent feature storage models. Experiment I involved a change detection task where participants memorized arrays of either orientation bars, colored squares, or both. In the one-feature condition, the memory array consisted of one feature (either orientations or colors), whereas the two-feature condition included both. We found no differences in change detection performance between the conditions, favoring the integrated object model over the parallel-independent feature storage model. Experiment II employed a recall task with memory arrays of isosceles triangles' orientations, colored squares, or both, and one-feature and two-feature conditions were compared for their recall performance. We found again no clear difference in recall accuracy between the conditions, but the results of analyses for memory precision and guessing responses indicated the weak object model over the strong object model. For ongoing debates surrounding VWM's representational characteristics, these findings highlight the dominance of the integrated object model over the parallel independent feature storage model.

  • In recent years, visual design has become an emerging industry that creates production value in various countries, and visual design teachers have become a key factor affecting the development of designers and even the trend of the design industry. Therefore, the requirements for the ability of visual design teachers have become particularly important. This study takes the visual communication teachers in colleges and universities as the research object. Focus on the composition of competencies that teachers have when performing their duties. First of all, through document sorting, it is based on the five aspects of knowledge ability, teaching ability, practical ability, management ability and professional ethics. A Likert scale questionnaire was developed on the evaluation of visual design teachers' competencies by interviewing 10 visual design industry experts and conducting two Delphi method interviews. This research refers to the relevant literatures such as curriculum research and teaching objective research of design major, and discusses the evaluation standards of visual design teachers' abilities in colleges and universities. Expert interviews have sorted out 12 criteria and 36 sub-criteria about visual design teachers' abilities, and verified their rationality through expert return visits. The establishment of this evaluation standard provides a certain theoretical basis for visual design teachers' ability evaluation and self-cognition.

  • Recently, as the sensor network technologies and camera technologies develops, there are increasing needs by combining two technologies to effectively observe or monitor the areas that are difficult for people to access by using the visual sensor network. Since the applications using visual sensors take pictures of the outdoor areas, the images may not be well contrasted due to cloudy weather or low-light time periods such as a sunset. In this paper, we first model the color characteristics according to illumination using the characteristics of visual sensors that continuously capture the same area. Using this model, a new method for improving low contrast images in real time is proposed. In order to make the model, the regions of interest consisting of the same color are set up and the changes of color according to the brightness of images are measured. The gamma function is used to model color characteristics using the measured data. It is shown by experimental results that the proposed method improves the contrast of an image by adjusting the color components of the low contrast image simply and accurately.

  • Viewers of videos are likely to absorb more information from the part of the screen that attracts visual attention. This fact has led to the visual attention models that are being used in producing and evaluating videos. In this paper, we investigate the factors that are significant to visual attention and the mathematical form of the visual attention model. We then estimated the visual attention probability using the statistical design of experiments. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) verifies that the motion velocity, distance from the screen, and amount of defocus blur affect human visual attention significantly. Using the response surface modeling (RSM), we created a visual attention score model that concerns the three factors, from which we calculate the visual attention probabilities (VAPs) of image pixels. The VAPs are directly applied to existing gradient based 3D effect perception measurement. By giving weights according to our VAPs, our algorithm achieves more accurate measurement than the existing method. The performance of the proposed measurement is assessed by comparing them with subjective evaluation as well as with existing methods. The comparison verifies that the proposed measurement outperforms the existing ones.

  • Daylight is a critical factor in architecture, as it enhances the working efficiency and visual comfort of the people working inside. Even though, low transmittance glazing has been used in the most office buildings in Korea. And it is reduced visual comfort in a indoor environment. So, we need to evaluation of quality for various daylighting systems to improve visual comfort This study aims to evaluate the visual comfort in a indoor environment by different daylighting system. For the purpose, four different daylighting systems-conventional window, conventional window with interior lightshelf, differentiated window, differentiated window with interior lightshelf-were selected and a questionnaire survey with 50 subjects were conducted. The results are as follows. Regardless daylighting systems, a view has an effect on visual comfort. A conventional system and conventional system with lightshelf were highly correlated between comfort and warmth. In case of differentiated window system were correlated between comfort and openness. Also, differentiated window with interior lightshelf were highly correlated between comfort and stability.

  • This study examines the influences of correlated color temperature and illuminance on visual perception and temporary mood sensation in a small office. Field measurements and surveys were conducted in a full-scale mock-up model. Twenty subjects participated in the survey under six lighting conditions formed by three color temperature and two illuminance levels. Results indicate that 4000 K color temperature was effective to mitigate glare sensation from light source. Lamps with low color temperature such as 2700 K was not recommended for office lighting since they are likely to caused glare and visual discomfort. Preferred color temperature was 4000 K and 6500 K for 750 lx and 500 lx target illuminance respectively. The increase of illuminance was not an effective contributor to improve mood perception. The illuminance should be lower than 500 lx to achieve good mood, but the illuminance level in office space should be considered with visual performance simultaneously. This study suggests that fluorescent lighting fixtures with 4000 K lamps would be usefully used for office lighting since they formed friendly conditions for better visual performance.

  • This paper reports on the ACQA(Animated agent for Conversational Question Answering) project conducted at LIMSI. The aim is to design an expressive animated conversational agent(ACA) for conducting research along two main lines: 1/ perceptual experiments(eg perception of expressivity and 3D movements in both audio and visual channels): 2/ design of human-computer interfaces requiring head models at different resolutions and the integration of the talking head in virtual scenes. The target application of this expressive ACA is a real-time question and answer speech based system developed at LIMSI(RITEL). The architecture of the system is based on distributed modules exchanging messages through a network protocol. The main components of the system are: RITEL a question and answer system searching raw text, which is able to produce a text(the answer) and attitudinal information; this attitudinal information is then processed for delivering expressive tags; the text is converted into phoneme, viseme, and prosodic descriptions. Audio speech is generated by the LIMSI selection-concatenation text-to-speech engine. Visual speech is using MPEG4 keypoint-based animation, and is rendered in real-time by Virtual Choreographer (VirChor), a GPU-based 3D engine. Finally, visual and audio speech is played in a 3D audio and visual scene. The project also puts a lot of effort for realistic visual and audio 3D rendering. A new model of phoneme-dependant human radiation patterns is included in the speech synthesis system, so that the ACA can move in the virtual scene with realistic 3D visual and audio rendering.

  • Now that the plume of point source was suspected to have strong impact on visibility impairment in Pusan, we evaluated visibility impairment impact of the pulme from Pusan Thermo Electric Power Plant in Pusan. Level-1 and-2 analyses were carried out using VISCREEN(Visual Impact Screen model). The emission rates for this Pusan Thermo Electric Power Plant was projected to be 116g/s of nitrogen oxides(as $NO_2$). The source fails the level-1 test with a Plume perceptibility(ΔE) of 30, nearly 15 times the screeing threshold. To characterize worstcase meteorological conditions for level-2 screening, we obtained meteorological data from Mar., 1996 to Feb., 1997 of Pusan Thermo Electric Power Plant. The source fails the level-2 test with a ΔE of 17, nearly 8.5 times the screening threshold. These analyses indicated that adverse visibility impairment could not be ruled out. Therefore a Level-3 analysis was performed using PLUVUE II(Plume Visibility model). As a result, maximum reduction of visual range for 0900LST in winter was 0.9%. Visual impact of the plume from vast point source was judged to be considerable in terms of background visibility of urban area.
