Objective : This study was designed to investigate the anti-inflammatory effect of Scolopendrid Herbal-Acupuncture. Methods : Scolopendrid Herbal-Acupuncture was administered one time on everyday and A-shi points were selected. Except Scolopendrid Herbal-Acupuncture administration, other therapies(conventional body acupuncture, physical therapy and so on) were not performed at all. We evaluated the patient through Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) and Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging(DITI). Results : After 2 or 3 times of treatment, the patient showed that clinical symptoms and VAS were lessened and there was a change of temperature in DITI. Conclusions : According to the results, Scolopendrid Herbal-Acupuncture may have anti-inflammatory effects. But further studies are required to prove the exact effect.
Objectives: When a person speaks, voice problems usually include pain or discomfort and/or difficulties in terms of the pitch, the loudness and the quality of the voice. When patients with voice problems induced by stroke, Parkinson's disease, and systemic diseases involving the voice are examined, generally, of the Four Diagnoses (四診), a Diagnosis of Hearing can be used in current Korean medicine. The effects of acupuncture and herb medicine on voice problems have been reported for over 20 years. However, when it comes to improvements, objective and subjective evaluation methods need to be explained. Methods: Subjective methods for evaluating voice were studied through a literature search of old medicinal books containing Korean medicine diagnostics, and an objective evaluation method using Praat software is presented. Results: Korean medicine doctors analyze the patient's voice in clinical settings unconsciously on a daily basis. However, most voice diagnoses depend on the doctor's subjective evaluation. Voice qualities can be evaluated by using the Eight Principles (八綱), including Yin-Yang; the Five Elements (Phases); the Grade, Roughness, Breathy, Asthenic, Strained (GRBAS) score, and the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) as subjective methods, and an acoustic analysis using the Praat program can be used as an objective method. Conclusion: A more complete voice examination can be achieved by using subjective and objective methods at the same time. For an objective explanation and management of patient's voice problems or systemic disorders, an objective method should be used in Korean medicine, which already has many subjective diagnostic methods. More research needs to be conducted, and more clinical evidence needs to be collected in the future.
Objectives : This study was designed to investigate the effect of SAAM-Acupuncture and GamigungguitangGaNokyong(GMGGTN) on Ankle Fracture. Methods : SAAM-Acupuncture was administered once daily. The following points were selected: $SP_3$(太白), $LU_9$(太淵), $LI_{11}$(曲池). After short leg casting, GMGGTN was taken 3 times per a day from March 28th to April 30th. We evaluated the patient using the Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) and Ankle Range of Motion(ROM). Results : After about 3 weeks of treatment, the patient's short leg cast was removed a week earlier than expected and the patient could walk without crutches and physical therapy. Their VAS changed from 10 to 1. And after added treatment for 2 weeks, there was no pain and limitation of ROM. Conclusions : According to the results, SAAM-Acupuncture and GMGGTN may have rapid effects on ankle fractures. But further studies are required to confirm this effect.
Purpose: This study was done to evaluate the effectiveness of cardiac rehabilitation education individualized to PCI patients in order to improve their knowledge of these diseases and to lessen their anxiety. Method: A Quasi experimental design with non-equivalent control group non-synchronized design was used. The experimental group had the PCI operation for ischemic heart disease and individualized cardiac rehabilitation education and counseling twice for 25 minutes each time using an educational booklet developed by the authors. The effects of the education were analyzed using a knowledge assessment tool, state anxiety inventory and anxiety visual analogue scale. Results: The experimental group who received the individualized cardiac rehabilitation education showed a high level of knowledge about diseases compared to the control group and particularly showed a significant difference in knowledge about the drugs used for treatment. However, no significant difference was observed between the two groups in the level of state anxiety and anxiety visual analogue scale. Conclusion: Individualized cardiac rehabilitation education did not reduce anxiety but it was effective in enhancing the participants' knowledge about the diseases. Thus, it can be utilized effectively in addressing risk factors in ischemic heart diseases by providing education individualized according to patients' demands and knowledge levels.
Background: This study was to investigate the effect of cervical HVLA technique and mulligan MWM technique on patients with lateral epicondylitis. Methods: 36 participants were randomly allocated to the two groups; group I involved high velocity low amplitude (HVLA) cervical mobilization technique, mulligan mobilizations with movement (MWM) technique (n=18). group II mulligan MWM (n=18). Patient attended for three times a week for six weeks. Results: The change of visual analogue scale (VAS) was statistically and significantly decreased in both of the group I and the group II. The change of patients rated tennis elbow evaluation (PRTEE) was statistically and significantly decreased in both of the group I and the group II. The change of pressure pain threshold (PPT) was statistically and significantly increased in both of the group I and the group II. Nevertheless, There is no statistical differences between group I and group II. Conclusion: After experiment, pressure pain threshold and visual analogue scale, patients rated tennis elbow evaluation were improved in both group. But Cervical HVLA group does not showed the change better than mulligan MWM group.
The present study retrospectively investigated clinical outcome at patients with low back pain or sciatica during Chuna treatment (flexion-distraction technique). The study population consisted of 29 patients. Discogenic group consisted of 21 patients who were already diagnosed as HNP of lumbar spine with serial MRIs(magnetic resonance imaging) or CTs(computerized tomography). Simple LBP group consisted of 8 patients with low back pain & sciatica who were non-specific disorder on radiologic examination. All patients were treated with flexion-distraction technique, one of Chuna technique, under analysis of Moire Topography. And the evaluation of clinical outcome was done twice during this study by Moire Topography Analytic Point and Low Back Pain Assesment, Visual Analogue Scale. The results were summarized as follows; Total improvement rate of Moire Topography was $25.8{\pm}17.8%$, and the rate of Low Back Pain Assesment was $56.5{\pm}23.0%$, Visual Analogue Scale of post-treatment was $32.6{\pm}22.5$ Between Improvement rate of Moire Topography and improvement rate of Low Back Pain Assesment, significant correlation was proved(Person's coefficient was 0.381, p<0.05). After all, it is certain improvement of Moire Topography represents symptom's improvement.
Objective : To evaluate the effect of Muscular Acupuncture and Muscle Energy technique on Frozen Shoulder.
