  • The study purposes to explore the effects of individual characteristics and home environments of children on their bilingual language aquisition, that is, to examine whether their English language competency is different from their Korean language competency depending on those variables. Thus English or Korean language competency of children who had had early exposure in English learning were studied in terms of child's individual characteristics such as age, gender, exposure period to English, intelligence, and experiences of visiting English-speaking countries, and home environments such as parental age, educational level, income level, their perceived English competency, their perceived significance of English and Korean language, and the frequency of using English at home. 72 children who went to English kindergarten were tested with Peabody Pictures Vocabulary Test-Revised (PPVT-R) in Korean version and in English version respectively. The results show that child's intelligence and experiences of visiting English-speaking countries influence their Korean language competency. Also child's age, exposure period to English and experiences of visiting English-speaking countries influence their English language competency. Moreover their mother's educational background, father's English fluency, mothers' English fluency, and the frequency of using English at home influence child's English language competency, whereas any variables did not influence child's Korean language competency. Accordingly, child's English and Korean language competencies are related to each other.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a low intensity exercise program with telephone coaching on the physical fitness and physiological index of elderly women who are receiving home visiting health program. Methods: This study was conducted using a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The participants were 53 senior citizens. The subjects (15) in experimental group 1 performed only a low-intensity exercise program and the subjects (16) in experimental group 2 performed a low intensity exercise program with telephone coaching for 16 weeks. The low intensity exercise program consisted of muscle strength band exercise, stretching, and hand exercise using balls. Results: There were statistical differences in the right grip strength (p=.030), left grip strength (p=.035), raising behind of right arm (p=.046), raising behind of left arm (p=.045), postprandial blood sugar (p=.021), body mass index (p=.029). Conclusion: The low intensity exercise program with telephone coaching is recommended as a physical fitness and physiological index for elderly women in a home visiting health program.

  • Purpose: Competency is a key foundation of the nursing education curriculum and a baseline element of nursing practice. The purpose of this study was to explore the competencies of community health nurses in a maternal early childhood sustained home-visiting program based on nurses' field experiences. Methods: The participants were 21 nurses who had more than 1 year of experience in this program. Reflective interviews were performed; lasting 1 hour per nurse, on August 18, 2016, and the collected data were analyzed using qualitative directed content analysis. Results: Twenty-four themes were extracted for 9 competencies. The major themes included implementing a long-term relationship-based approach, providing client-led service rather than expert-led service, helping mothers with psychosocial difficulties, and applying skills in a practical manner in the home environment. Conclusion: In order to develop a home-visiting program as part of maternal-early childhood nursing practice, nurses should develop competencies that help them make significant and positive interventions. Results indicate that the curriculum for community health nurses should be changed to improve competencies in building relationships with clients and to focus on the application of skills in specific cases and in clinical practice.

  • This study was conducted to grasp the progress of the health management program in small scale industries with phenomenological approach. The industrial health care system compose of manpower, devices, and facilities such as medical resources, organization, service delivery system, financial resources, payments, and management system is important for the industrial health. Especially health management program should be provided feasible conditions to workers. The data collection period was 2 months from September 1 to October 30, 1997. The indepth interview results for health monitor, labors, and occupational health nurses were analyzed by Giorgis' phenomenological method. The major results were as follows: 1. The workers, health monitors and nurses felt that the subsidiary program of health management in small scale industries were necessary. This project for small-size industry can be set-up through complementary education for health monitors and resolvement of nurses' six suggestions. It is necessary to provide followings ; 1) Properly devision of industry 2) More clear guidance for health management at visiting time 3) Legitimate incentive system 4) Health education materials and devices 5) Change of fee and material payments at visiting 6) Budgets and system for medication and vaccination at visiting 2. Above all, it is suggested that the strategics of the health management program should be developed.

In dental fear category, the number of dental pain, the visiting is treatment, the recognize of dental state, the number of toothbrush and the change of dental visiting date are significantly different. In the prevention knowledge according to dental fear state, low fear group 7.03 is higher than high fear group. In the dental treatment knowledge according to dental fear state, high fear group 7.15 is higher than low fear group. In personal temperament, there are not significantly relationship between prevention knowledge, dental treatment knowledge and dental fear. • The Asian Conference on Engineering Education has organized and is held in Busan. This paper tells the steps for the process of planning of this conference. Firstly, the Innovation Center for Engineering Education in Korea Maritime University and the Center for Innovation and Creativity Development in The University of Tokushima signed the mutual interchange agreement on engineering education in 2005. The interrelation of both centers has made a continuous relation by mutual visiting of teachers and students. The first symposium on engineering education between the two universities was held in 2006. Three symposia were succeeded until now. By the way, the Japanese five-university coalition of engineering education was composed in 2004. This five-university coalition annually held the symposium on engineering education. Two teachers and two students of each university participated in the symposium and introduced their activities. Annual symposium was held every year from 2004 to 2008. Based on these two kinds of symposium, we have planned to enlarge the relationship by including partner universities in both countries. The capstone design coalition on engineering education between the Center for Innovation and Creativity Development in the University of Tokushima and the innovation center for engineering education in Korea Maritime University are introduced. The interrelation of both centers has held by mutual visiting of teachers and students during four years. The capstone design activities of Korea Maritime University and the students' creative design projects of the University of Tokushima were introduced each other. The program was repeated three times using the same educational theme and consisted three steps. Step 1 involved visiting education with teaching tools by a dietician. Step 2 involved home education with a worksheet and participating in events with parents. Step 3 involved repeated education with a textbook by a preschool teacher education reports sent to the center. The subjects of this study were 3 to 5-year-old children at 89 childcare facilities located in Busanjingu. Interest in meals at childcare facilities, dietary guidance for parents of children, and dietary attitudes of children were evaluated before and after education. Number of parents interested in meals managed by childcare facilities (kitchen visiting, meals observation, progress of children's education) increased after education. Mean scores for meal awareness in parents in the form of three questions (proper food distribution, hand washing before mealtime, nutritional and hygienic satisfaction with meals) significantly (p<0.05) increased after education. Mean dietary guidance for parents' scores for all questions except table manner significantly (p<0.01) increased after education. Mean dietary attitudes for children in the form of six questions (try to eat various vegetable, eat meals without leaving, wash hands before mealtime, eat cleanly, reduce sodium intake and keep table manner) also significantly (p<0.001) increased after education. As a results, the nutritional education program applied in this study, positive influenced children's nutritional knowledge and dietary attitudes, and parents' dietary guidance of children.

  • Objectives: This study confirms the current status of visiting oral health-care services for the elderly to draw policy implications for revitalization of the visiting oral health care services in the future. Methods: First, a survey was conducted on health centers about the current status of the elderly visiting oral health-care service and how to revitalize it. Next, the number of oral hygiene services provided to the elderly was checked in the long-term care insurance system. Results: Oral health education (100%) was the most common practice in visiting oral health-care service for the elderly, and the most difficult thing in providing services was the lack of dental hygienists (38.9%). The status of oral health-care services in the long-term care insurance system for elderly revealed that the total number of service claims has been confirmed to be zero since the introduction of the system. Conclusions: Despite the existence of a system that provides elderly visiting oral healthcare services, to revitalize it, the law must be amended to secure a dental hygienist as the main agent of the activity and to further take responsibility for autonomous authority and performance.
