Nonlinear Wave Forces on an Offshore Wind Turbine Foundation in Shallow Waters

  • In this study, a 3D numerical model was used to predict nonlinear wave forces on a cylindrical pile installed in a shallow water region. The model was based on solving the viscous and incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for a two-phase flow (water and air) model and the volume of fluid method for treating the free surface of water. A new application was developed based on the cut-cell method to allow easy installation of complicated obstacles (e.g., bottom geometry and cylindrical pile) in a computational domain. Free-surface elevation, water particle velocities, and inline wave forces were calculated, and the results show good agreement with experimental data obtained by the Danish Hydraulic Institute. The simulation results revealed that the proposed model can, without the use of empirical formulas (i.e., Morison equation) and additional wave analysis models, reliably predict non-linear wave forces on an offshore wind turbine foundation installed in a shallow water region.

  • 본 연구는 PIV 기법을 사용하여 쇄파와 몰수체의 상호작용에 의한 점성유동장의 변화를 가시화 함과 아울러 순간유동장을 해석하는데 목적을 두고 수행하였다. 몰수깊이의 변화에 따른 쇄파와 실린더의 상호작용은 S/D=1.5 정도에서 부터 감지되기 시작하여 몰수깊이가 얕아질수록 상호작용이 크게 발생하였으며 S/D=1.0 이하가 되면 쇄파로 인한 와류가 실린더로부터 유기되는 와류를 압도하여 실린더 후방의 전반적인 와도분포를 심하게 변형시킴을 알 수 있었다. 이로부터 PIV 기법은 와도분포 해석과 같은 비정상 보오텍스 유동장의 해석에 매우 유용한 방법임을 확인하였다.

Prediction of the turning and zig-zag maneuvering performance of a surface combatant with URANS

  • The main objective of this study is to investigate the turning and zig-zag maneuvering performance of the well-known naval surface combatant DTMB (David Taylor Model Basin) 5415 hull with URANS (Unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes) method. Numerical simulations of static drift tests have been performed by a commercial RANS solver based on a finite volume method (FVM) in an unsteady manner. The fluid flow is considered as 3-D, incompressible and fully turbulent. Hydrodynamic analyses have been carried out for a fixed Froude number 0.28. During the analyses, the free surface effects have been taken into account using VOF (Volume of Fluid) method and the hull is considered as fixed. First, the code has been validated with the available experimental data in literature. After validation, static drift, static rudder and drift and rudder tests have been simulated. The forces and moments acting on the hull have been computed with URANS approach. Numerical results have been applied to determine the hydrodynamic maneuvering coefficients, such as, velocity terms and rudder terms. The acceleration, angular velocity and cross-coupled terms have been taken from the available experimental data. A computer program has been developed to apply a fast maneuvering simulation technique. Abkowitz's non-linear mathematical model has been used to calculate the forces and moment acting on the hull during the maneuvering motion. Euler method on the other hand has been applied to solve the simultaneous differential equations. Turning and zig-zag maneuvering simulations have been carried out and the maneuvering characteristics have been determined and the numerical simulation results have been compared with the available data in literature. In addition, viscous effects have been investigated using Eulerian approach for several static drift cases.

수면하 보오텍스 유동과 자유표면과의 상호 작용에 관한 연구 (Numerical and Experimental Investigation on the Interaction of Subsurface Vortical Flows with a Free Surface)

  • 자유표면과 수면하 vortex 유동과의 상호작용으로 생기는 수면위의 특이 형상을 실험과 수치해석으로 얻어진 결과에 근거하여 논하였다. 먼저 2차원적인 실험이나 해석적인 연구로 이해될 수 있는 "striation"의 발생을 살펴 본다. "Scar"라 불리우는 striation과 수직한 형상은 2차원 vortex filament와 vortex pair 생성시 생겨나는 residual vortex의 상호작용으로 설명하였다. 간단하면서도 중요한 상호작용의 역학을 연구할 목적으로 vortex ring이 자유표면과 수직하게 충돌할 경우에 나타나는 현상들을 실험적으로 논하였고 이때 상호작용의 초기단계를 축대칭 문제로 하여 수치해석적으로 얻어진 결과와 비교하였다. 상호작용의 후기단계는 vortex reconnection을 포함하는 복잡한 과정인데 이때 수면에서의 짧은파 생성을 vortex ring의 수면과의 경사진 충돌로 설명하였다. 또한 위의 수면과 생성을 간단한 해석적 model로 재구성하여 비교해 보았다. 끝으로 수면위에 존재하는 오염물질이 수면하 vortex 유동에 미치는 영향을 수치해석적인 방법으로 free slip및 rigid wall 조건의 경우와 비교하여 살펴보았다.

활주평판의 조파현상에 관한 수치연구 (Numerical study on wavemaking phenomena generated by a planning flat plate)

  • Numerical study is carried out to make clear the wavemaking phenomena for a planning flat plate. Through the mumerical computations, some schematic wave patterns are compared with experimental results, for example, such as the bow divergent waves, triangle waves, stern divergent saves, stern cross waves. The characteristic distance of waves is found to be more inconsistent as the incidence angle increases. The comparison was mode between computations and experiments for incidence angles of 5, 10 and 15 degrees. However, a numerical difficulty is found around and behined the trailing edges for more than 20 degree.

CFD를 이용한 표면 거칠기에 따른 선박의 저항 성능 추정에 관한 연구 (A Study on Predicting Ship Resistance Performance due to Surface Roughness Using CFD)

  • In recent, shipping companies have made an enormous effort to improve the operation of vessel in various approaches, due to recession of shipping market and increasing competition among shipping companies. One of important parameters for improving the efficiency of vessel is the resistance performance that consist of friction and residual resistance. Especially, it is recognized that the friction resistance tends to be affected by conditions of vessel’s surface and occupies approximately 70~90% of the total resistance for slow speed ships. In general, the surface of vessel is covered with various type of paint to reduce fouling and corrosion. As time goes by, however, it is so hull roughness would be increased by fouling over the wetted surface that anti-fouling paints, such as CDP(Controlled Depletion Paint), Tin-Free SPC(Self Polishing Co-polymer) or Foul Release, are applied evenly on the hull surface. Nevertheless, these anti-fouling paints could not prevent fouling absolutely. A fundamental study on evaluating ship resistance performance variation due to hull roughness has been performed using a commercial software, Star-CCM+, which solves the continuity and Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible and viscous flow. The results of present simulation for plate are compared with some experimental data available and the effect of surface roughness to ship resistance performance is discussed.

규칙파중 전진하는 선박의 유체역학적 응답에 대한 비정상 수치해석 (Unsteady RANS Analysis of the Hydrodynamic Response for a Ship with Forward Speed in Regular Wave)

  • The present paper provides a CFD analysis of diffraction problem for a ship with forward speed using an unsteady RANS simulation method, a WAVIS code. The WAVIS viscous solver adopting a finite volume method has second order accuracy in time and field discretizaions for the RANS equations. A two phase level-set method and a realizable ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model are adopted to compute the free surface and to meet the turbulence closure, respectively. To validate the capability of the present numerical methods for the simulation of an unsteady progressive regular wave, computations are performed for three grid sets with refinement ratio of ${\sqrt{2}}$. The main simulation is performed for a DTMB5512 model with a forward speed in a regular head sea condition. Validation of the present numerical method is carried out by comparing the present CFD results with available unsteady experimental data published in the 2005 Tokyo CFD Workshop: resistance, heave force, pitch moment, unsteady free surface elevations and velocity fields.

강제동요를 이용한 원형실린더 점성 롤댐핑 연구 (Study on the Viscous Roll Damping around Circular Cylinder Using Forced Oscillations)

  • 선박 및 해양구조물 설계에 있어 롤댐핑에 관한 문제는 유체점성과 현상자체의 비선형성으로 인해 공학자들에게 있어 난제로 남아있다. 본 연구에서는 강제동요방법을 이용하여 원형실린더의 점성 롤감쇠에 관한 연구를 수행하였다. 토크 센서를 이용하여 강제동요 시 발생하는 롤모멘트(roll moment)를 강제동요 주기별로 계측하였고 이를 실험식(empirical formula)과 비교 검토 하였다. 점성에 의한 전단력으로부터 계측된 토크의 크기가 상대적으로 작은 값임에도 불구하고 실험식으로부터 얻어진 계산값들과 정성적으로 유사한 결과를 보였고, 일부 주기에서는 정량적으로도 잘 일치하는 결과를 보였다. 또한, PIV 계측기법을 통해 원형실린더 벽면주위의 유동을 면밀히 관찰하였으며, 유체점성으로 인해 원형실린더 벽면근처에서 경계층이 형성되고 자유수면에서 원형실린더의 주기적인 강제회전동요로 인해 미소한 크기의 파가 생성(wave making)됨을 PIV 계측결과의 분석을 통해 확인하였다. 본 연구에서는 점성 롤감쇠로 인한 실험식의 적합성을 모형시험을 통해 확인하였고, PIV 계측기법을 통해 벽면주위의 유체점성으로 인한 조파현상을 입증하였다.

Nonlinear sloshing in rectangular tanks under forced excitation

  • A numerical code is developed based on potential flow theory to investigate nonlinear sloshing in rectangular Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) tanks under forced excitation. Using this code, internal free-surface elevation and sloshing loads on liquid tanks can be obtained both in time domain and frequency domain. In the mathematical model, acceleration potential is solved in the calculation of pressure on tanks and the artificial damping model is adopted to account for energy dissipation during sloshing. The Boundary Element Method (BEM) is used to solve boundary value problems of both velocity potential and acceleration potential. Numerical calculation results are compared with published results to determine the efficiency and accuracy of the numerical code. Sloshing properties in partially filled rectangular and membrane tank under translational and rotational excitations are investigated. It is found that sloshing under horizontal and rotational excitations share similar properties. The first resonant mode and excitation frequency are the dominant response frequencies. Resonant sloshing will be excited when vertical excitation lies in the instability region. For liquid tank under rotational excitation, sloshing responses including amplitude and phase are sensitive to the location of the center of rotation. Moreover, experimental tests were conducted to analyze viscous effects on sloshing and to validate the feasibility of artificial damping models. The results show that the artificial damping model with modifying wall boundary conditions has better applicability in simulating sloshing under different fill levels and excitations.

규칙파와 수평판의 비선형 상호작용에 의한 고차 조화항 발생 (Higher Harmonic Generation by Nonlinear Interaction between Monochromatic Waves and a Horizontal Plate)

  • 규칙파와 수면아래 잠긴 수평판 사이의 비선형 상호작용을 규명하기 위하여 수치파동수조를 이용하여 수치 실험을 수행하였다. 수치모델로 비선형 포텐셜 이론을 근거로 한 고차 경계요소법과 Navier Stokes 방정식과 엄밀한 자유표면 경계조건식을 푸는 CADMAS-SURF을 사용하였다. 두 모델 모두 수평판 위의 천수역에서 발생하는 고차 조화항들을 예측할 수 있으며 점성효과를 포함하는 CADMAS-SURF는 수평판 양단에서 발생하는 와류와 박리에 의한 고차 조화항의 발생을 재현할 수 있다. 수평판의 잠긴 깊이와 길이 변화에 따른 반사율과 투과율을 Patarapanich and Cheong(1989)의 모형실험결과와 비교하였고 서로 잘 일치함을 확인하였다. 수평판의 길이가 길어지고 잠긴 깊이가 얕아질수록 입사파의 에너지가 고차 조화항으로 더 많이 전이됨을 확인하였다.
