  • A series of simulations were carried out to test the accuracy of a CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) model for flow and dispersion problems around buildings. The basic equations involved are Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. Two different cases were selected to estimate the accuracy of a CFD model. Case 1 adopted Euler equations, which are obtained by neglecting the viscous fluxes, which can be closed by the $textsc{k}$-$\varepsilon$model for a turbulent close problem. The results of both cases were compared with wind tunnel data. The results for Case 2 were closer to the wind both cases were compared with wind tunnel data. The results for Case 2 were closer to the wind tunnel data than Case 1. Accordingly, this indicates that the inclusion of viscous fluxes in a CFD model is required for the simulation of flow and 야spersion around buildings.

  • This study presents numerical solutions of the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations for supersonic unsteady flow in a convergent-divergent nozzle with heat addition. The TVD scheme in generalized coordinates is employed in order to calculate the moving shock waves caused by thermal choking. We discuss on transient characteristics, start and unstart phenomena, fluctuations of specific thrust caused by thermal choking and viscous effects. We prove that the control of separation of boundary layer is the most important key problem to prevent the thermal choking.

  • Airframe-integrated Scramjet engines of NASA Langley type consist of a compressor, a combustion chamber and a nozzle. When some disturbances occur in one module of the engine, its influences are propagated to other modules. In this study, it is investigated numerically how shock waves were caused by thermal choking in one module propagate upstream and how they influence adjacent modules. The calculations are carried out in 2-dimensional supersonic viscous flow model using explicit TVD scheme in generalized coordinates. The adverse pressure gradient caused by heat addition brings about separation of the wall boundary layers and formation of the oblique shock wave that proceed to upstream. This moving shock wave formed one module blocks the flow coming into the adjacent modules, which makes the modules unstarted.

  • A three-dimensional numerical analysis of the flow and heat transfer characteristic of wood-flour-filled polypropylene melt in an extrusion die was carried out. Used for this analysis were Finite Concept Method based on FVM, unstructured grid and non-Newtonian fluid viscosity model. Temperature and flow fields are closely coupled through temperature dependent viscosity and viscous dissipation. With large Peclet, Nahme, Brinkman numbers, viscous heating caused high temperature belt near die housing. Changing taper plate thickness and examining some predefined parameters at die exit investigated the effect of taper plate on velocity and temperature uniformities. In the presence of taper plate, uniformity at die exit could be improved and there existed an optimum thickness to maximize it.

  • The flow through multistage turbomachinery is affected by the interaction between a rotor and a stator. The interaction is due to the inviscid potential effect and viscous effect between closely spaced rotor and stator airfoils. Three-dimensional, unsteady, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with a standard $k-{\epsilon}$ model are solved using a non-staggered grid system. This method is applied to the flow through a multistage compressor measured by Stauter et al. The results have shown strong interaction between the rotating and stationary flow field. The decay of rotor wake and the pressure profiles agree very well with experimental data. The wake produced by rotor causes unsteady pressure on the surface of a stator. The rotor/stator interaction produces the unsteady pressure force on the rotor and stator blades.

  • Propeller type pump has been widely used for pumping water in agricultural and manufacturing industry. Since a propeller type pump contains a screw impeller inside a circular casing, the numerical analysis becomes complex. However, the accurate prediction of viscous flow is essential for computing hydrodynamic performances. To analysis the flow and the performance of the propeller type pump, the present work has solved 3D incompressible RANS equations on the multiblocked grid. From the present calculation, small amount of flow separation was shown near hub and the flow was recovered to nearly uniform inflow after one diameter downstream. Torque and thrust coefficient were computed and compared with experiments.

  • The Flow patterns around two cylinders in various arrangements were studied by a discrete vortex method. The flow for the surface of each cylinder was represented by arranging bound vortices at adequate intervals. The viscous diffusion of fluid was represented by the random walk method. The vortex distributions, streaklines, timelines and velocity vectors around two cylinders were calculated for centre-to-centre pitch ratios of $P/D=1.5 and 2.5$, attack angles of ${\alpha}=0^{\circ},\;30^{\circ},\;60^{\circ}\;and\;90^{\circ}$, and Reynolds number of Re=1200. The results of simulation correspond to the photographs by flow visualization and the flow intereference between two cylinders in various arrangements was clearly visualized by a numerical simulation.

  • The present study is carried out to examine the combined effect of heat absorption on flow model. The model consists of unsteady flow of a viscous, incompressible and electrically conducting fluid. The flow is along an impulsively started oscillating vertical plate with variable mass diffusion. The magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the plate. The fluid model under consideration has been solved by Laplace transform technique. The numerical data obtained is discussed with the help of graphs and table. The numerical values obtained for skin-friction have been tabulated. To shorten the lengthy equations in the solution some symbols have been assumed, which are mentioned in appendix. The appendix is included in the article as the last section of the manuscript.
