  • The flexural vibration of laminated composite beams with active and passive constrained layer damping has been investigated to design a structure with maximum possible damping capacity. The equations of motion are derived fro flexural vibrations of symmetrical,. multi-layer laminated beams. The damping ratio and model damping of the first bending mode are calculated by means of iterative complex eigensolution method. The direct negative velocity feedback control is used for the active constrained layer damping. It is shown that the flexible laminated beam is more effective in the vibration control for both active and passive constrained layer damping. and this paper addresses a design strategy of laminated composite under flexural vibrations with constrained layer damping.

  • This paper reports on a proof-of-concept experimental investigation focused on evaluating the vibration characteristics and control of smart hollow cantilever beams filled with an electro-rheological(ER) fluid. The beams are considered to be of uniform viscoelastic materials and modelled as a viscously-damped harmonic oscillator. Electric field-dependent natural frequencies, loss factors and complex moduli are evaluated and compared among three different beams : two types of different volume fraction of ER fluid and one type of different particle concentration of ER fluid by weight. Modal characteristics of the beams are observed in both the absence and the presence of electric potentials. It is also shown that by constructing active control algorithm the removal of structural resonances and the suppression of tip deflection are obtained. This result provides the feasiblility of ER fluids as an active vibration control element.

  • For the control of vibration and noise of metal structures having relatively low damping, viscoelastic materials are widely used and usually attached at metal structures with an additional constraining layer to secure them. The damping and elastic properties of structures having constrained viscoelastic material layers are dependent on not only temperature and frequency but also their thicknesses. Hence, optimal design of the thicknesses of viscoelastic and constraining layers for a certain base structure are very important to maximize their efficiency and to lighten their weight. In this study, the variation of loss factor of beams having a constrained viscoelastic layer according to the change of thickness has been carefully investigated. From these, optimal design method of the minimum thickness beam having a given loss factor is suggested and numerically verified for a real beam.

  • This paper deals with the problem of the determination of the response of a viscoelastic Bernoulli-Navier beam, which is resting on an elastic medium. Assuming uniaxial bending, the displacement of the beam axis is governed by an integro-differential equation. The compatibility of the displacements between the beam and the elastic medium is imposed through an integral equation. In general and in particular in the case of a Boussinesq medium, the solution has to be pursued numerically. On the contrary, in the case of a Winkler's medium the compatibility equation becomes a linear finite relationship, which allows finding an original analytical solution of the problem for both hereditary and aging behavior of the beam. Some numerical examples complete the paper, in which a comparison is made between the hereditary and the aging model for the creep of the beam.

  • Electro-Rheological(ER) fluids undergo a phase-change when subjected to an external electic field, and this phase-change typically manifests itself as a many-order-of-magnitude change in the rheological behavior. This phenomenon permits the global stiffness and energy- dissipation properties of the beam structures to be tuned in order to synthesize the desired vibration characteristics. This paper reports on a proof-of-concept experimental investigation focussed on evaluation the vibration properties of hollow cantilevered beams filled with an ER fluid. and consequently deriving an empirical model for predicting field-dependent vibration characteristics. A hydrous-based ER fluid consisting of corn starch and silicone oil is employed. The beams are considered to be uniform viscoelastic materials and modelled as a viscously-damped harmonic oscillator. Natural frequency, damping ratio and elastic modulus are evaluated with respect to the electric field and compared among three different beams: two types of different volume fraction of ER fluid and one type of different particle concentration of ER fluid by weight. Transient and forced vibration responses are examined in time domain to demonstrate the validity of the proposed empirical model and to evaluate the feasibility of using the ERfluid as an actuator in a closed-loop control system.

  • This paper presents the effects of partial dampers on the lateral vibration of beams. Both shear and normal stresses in the viscoelastic layer were studied. Analytical results were compared with those obtained by a finite element method. Effects of the size of partial dampers on the system loss factors and resonant frequencies were discussed.

  • This study performs the elastic and viscoelastic analysis of composite continuous beams with flexible shear connectors. Due to creep and shrinkage of the concrete part, the stress redistribution between the concrete slab and steel beam, and the evolution of the redundant restraint reaction occur with time. Using the equation of equilibrium, internal and external compatibility condition, and constitutive relationships, mathematical formulations are formulated. The solution is obtained by means of numerical step-by-step techniques and the finite difference method. Numerical parametric studies are performed to evaluate the stress redistribution, and the evolution of the redundant restraint reaction. The parameters include the stiffness and spacing of shear connectors, the age of concrete at loading, and the relative humidity.

  • The paper presents the simplified matrix stiffness method for analysis of composite and prestressed beams. The method is based on the previously developed "exact" analysis method that uses the mathematical theory of linear integral operators to derive all relations without any mathematical simplifications besides inevitable idealizations related to the material rheological properties. However, the method is limited since the closed-form solution can be found only for specific forms of the concrete creep function. In this paper, the authors proposed the simplified analysis method by introducing the assumption that the unknown deformations change linearly with the concrete creep function. Adopting this assumption, the nonhomogeneous integral system of equations of the "exact" method simplifies to the system of algebraic equations that can be easily solved. Therefore, the proposed method is more suitable for practical applications. Its high level of accuracy in comparison to the "exact" method is preserved, which is illustrated on the numerical example. Also, it is more accurate than the well-known EM method.
