  • This paper proposes a graphical user interface for industrial robot systems. Previous user interfaces for industrial robot systems were based on the text. In order to enable operators to handle robots more efficiently, a set of graphical tools is provided. The graphical tools contain a control panel for operating robots and compiling robot programs, a graphical teaching panel for handling virtual robots and a graphical monitoring panel for checking robot status. Furthermore, the proposed GUI can be used to operate remote robots because it has network utilities. This system consists of the virtual mode and the real mode. The user can handle a 3D virtual solid model of the robot in the virtual mode and an actual robot in the real mode.

  • Vehicle simulators provide an effective and safe environment for training operators. Many vehicle simulators have been developed but only a few have reached the stage of widely available tools; these tools are usually expensive and run on workstations only We have developed a low-cost, PC-based excavator simulator for training operators. Currently the simulator is dedicated to operating the boom, Em, bucket, and driver's cabin for digging by the action of the operator on two joysticks. This paper presents the implementation of the excavator simulator and some implementation results.

  • This study is intended to find out the reason of interference phenomenon of a machine tool when it operates for 5-axises working. The researcher made a Virtual Machine which has same figures of the 5 axises machine tool and Virtual Manufacturing System which has both Software factors - controller and NC code data to manipulate the movement characteristics of the machine - and Hardware factors - fixtures, workpiece, tools, holders and so on. With these virtual tools, this study is designed to find out the relation between the movement and the interference or collision, and also intended to verify the simulation and work-processing. In this study, the researcher found out, in case of the vertical 5 axises type, that it has more chances to have interference between the fixture, the workpiece and the main spindle including the tool holder due to the tilting kinetics of the main spindle. In case of the horizontal 5 axises type, on the other hand, the researcher found out that it has more possibility to have the interference between the main spindle and the rotary shaft.

  • Recently, there are many embedded system prototyping tools for helping embedded system designers to trial their product before it releases to the market. A prototype is very important for early embedded system design to grasp the desire functions, to get a good performance, to create delightful user interface, and to increase the valuable of the product. Prototyping tools can be classified by three categories: Physical, Virtual and Modeling prototyping. The integration of these prototyping tools becomes valuable for speed up time-to-market and for decrease design cost when design embedded system. The problem comes up because these tools sometime do not provide an instrument for communicating each other. In this paper, we propose a flexible and reusable mechanism for integrate these tools base on JavaBeans and ActiveX technology. We show how this mechanism can be employed in various prototyping tools.

  • In this paper, we propose an automatic generation method of transaction level(TL) model from algorithmic model to verify system specification fast and effectively using virtual platform. The TL virtual platform including structural properties such as timing, synchronization and real-time is one of the effective verification frameworks. However, whenever change system specification or HW/SW mapping, we must rebuild virtual platform and additional design/verification time is required. And the manual description is very time-consuming and error-prone process. To solve these problems, we build TL library which consists of basic components of virtual platform such as CPU, memory, timer. We developed a set of design/verification tools in order to generate a virtual platform automatically. Our tools generate a virtual platform which consists of embedded real-time operating system (RTOS) and hardware components from an algorithmic modeling. And for communication between HW and SW, memory map and device drivers are generated. The effectiveness of our proposed framework has been successfully verified with a Joint Photographic Expert Group (JPEG) and H.264 algorithm. We claim that our approach enables us to generate an application specific virtual platform $100x{\tims}1000x$ faster than manual designs. Also, we can refine an initial platform incrementally to find a better HW/SW mapping. Furthermore, application software can be concurrently designed and optimized as well as RTOS by the generated virtual platform

  • Roof structure of the traditional buildings in the Northeast Asia region including Korea contains the most complicated and crucial components of the building and therefore the issues such as cost down, productivity and the attempt to combine the traditional building methodology with contemporary building technology turn out to be vital to the survival of the old yet disconnected traditional building industry. One of the distinctive modern building technologies is handling life-cycle building information by constructing virtual buildings using BIM, building information modeling tools. In this paper we follow a procedure to implement some of the design modules to be applied in BIM tools which are platforms for constructing virtual building models. We focus on Gong-po components namely the bracket-sets which are the essential part that connects the middle parts to the top parts (the roof structure) which are considered to be the most elaborate parts of the traditional buildings. The target building to work with in this paper is the Sung-Rye-Moon which has special cultural and social meanings nowadays and we tested our understanding and the design modules such as the bracket-sets by constructing a virtual building model of Sung-Rye-Moon.

  • This paper proposes a method of identifying the moment when a student with developmental disabilities needs assistance intervention in performing barista vocational training using virtual reality-based realistic contents. To this end, 21 students enrolled in a vocational training center for persons with disabilities were selected as study subjects. These students were trained to recognize the barista tools in a virtual reality environment. During the training, if students experienced difficulties and were unable to proceed further, they were asked to raise their hands or verbally request assistance. Using the collected data, two hypotheses were established based on the distance between the hand of the student and each barista tool in the virtual reality space in order to derive a criterion for judging the moment when an intervention is required. As a result of verifying the hypotheses, this study found that the cumulative distance from the hand of a student, who successfully finished the training without requiring an intervention, to the target barista tool as well as adjacent tools was significantly shorter than the cumulative distance to other barista tools.

  • The paper describes creation methods of background scenes to implement realistic virtual environments in the VRSS (Virtual Reality Ship Simulator). VRSS is next-generation system constructed with virtual tools in a virtual space. Thus, it could have many benefits compared to conventional ship simulators composed with heavy bridge mock-up system and wide visual presentations. In this work, we developed effective 3D object modeling techniques, and constructed virtual harbor scene by using 3D-Webmaster authoring tool. The virtual harbor was built with object-oriented 3D objects modeled to interact with user's action. With the immersion-type VR system, we created virtual harbor environments in a virtual space, and discussed on the naturalness of the scene with test results of SDMPA (Semantic Differential Method for Psychophysical Assessment) by 10 subjects. As the results of subject assessment, all of the participants could felt natural-like harbor. Therefore, we found that the proposed creation methods and procedures of background scene are enabling to fit to the full mission VRSS construction.

  • Vehicle driving simulators can provide engineers with benefits on the development and modification of vehicle models. One of the most important factors to realistic simulations is the fidelity given by a motion system and a real-time visual image generation system. Virtual reality technology has been widely used to achieve high fidelity. In this paper the virtual environment including a visual system like a head-mounted display is developed for a vehicle driving simulator system by employing the virtual reality technique. virtual vehicle and environment models are constructed using the object-oriented analysis and design approach. Accordint to the object model a three dimensional graphic model is developed with CAD tools such as Rhino and Pro/E. For the real-time image generation the optimized IRIS Performer 3D graphics library is embedded with the multi-thread methodology. Compared with the single loop apprach the proposed methodology yields an acceptable image generation speed 20 frames/sec for the simulator.

  • Driving simulators provide engineers with a power tool in the development and modification stages of vehicle models. One of the most important factors to realistic simulations is the fidelity obtained by a motion bed and a real-time visual image generation algorithm. Virtual reality technology has been widely used to enhance the fidelity of vehicle simulators. This paper develops the virtual environment for such visual system as head-mounted display for a vehicle driving simulator. Virtual vehicle and environment models are constructed using the object-oriented analysis and design approach. Based on the object model, a three-dimensional graphic model is completed with CAD tools such as Rhino and Pro/ENGINEER. For real-time image generation, the optimized IRIS Performer 3D graphics library is embedded with the multi-thread methodology. The developed software for a virtual driving simulator offers an effective interface to virtual reality devices.
