A VR Bike Simulator for Balance Rehabilitation Training

  • This paper describes a development of rehabilitation training system for the postural balance control. A new rehabilitation training system, designated as a virtual cycling system, was developed to improve postural balance control by combining virtual reality technology with an unfixed bicycle. In this experiment, 20 normal adults were tested to investigate the influencing parameters of postural balance control. In order to evaluate the usefulness and the training effects of the system, several parameters including path deviation, cycling velocity, cycling time, center of pressure, and head movement were evaluated and analyzed quantitatively.   • This paper's objectives are to investigate the criteria for ergonomic evaluation of indoor bike coordinated with virtual images, and to compare HMD-based VR bike with 2D-based one. 12 experts performed delphi method with an aim to determine ergonomic evaluation criteria that were classified into 4 categories(Usability, Emotion, User Values, Reality). 2D-based bike and HMD-based one were compared according to part of final criteria through fuzzy-logic question performed by 20 subjects. Though there were no confidential difference in usability, HMD-based VR bicycle resulted in greater scores than 2D-based one in elements related with emotion, user value and reality statistically. It is expected that this research results will be used as references to evaluate ergonomic design of other indoor exercise equipments combined with VR or AR.

  • With the increase in interest in health in the society, a variety of fusion studies have been conducted by ICT to sports. This study develops a smart bicycle that is run only when a rider maintains balance, and proposes an interface of studio space where the smart bicycle can be experienced. The studio consists of interactive smart bike, a geodesic dome for immersion of content for a single person, and virtual reality content that is implemented to enjoy various sceneries in real space. This study contributes to attempts of design and production of studio that is optimized to interactive space of smart bike for single person. This studio has a scalable interface, which can be applicable to various other interactive contents for sportainmnet.

Development of Driving Simulator Based on Washout Algorithm with Fuzzy Logic (퍼지에 기초한 워시아웃 알고리듬을 적용한 주행 시뮬레이터의 개발)

  • In the virtual environment, reality can be enhanced by offering the motion based on a motion simulator in harmony with visual and auditory modalities. In this research, the Stewart platform based motion simulator has been developed. This motion simulator is driven by the electric motors, and offers the slightly wider workspace compared to the commercial available simulators. In order to compensate for the limited range of the motion platform, the washout filters with fixed coefficients have been usually adopted. In this paper the new approach is proposed to tune the filter coefficients based on the fuzzy logic on the real-time basis. It is shown that performance with the variable filter coefficients is better than that with the fixed ones. The driving simulator based on the bicycle dynamics was developed by integrating the motion simulator and graphic system.

Washout Algorithm with Fuzzy-Based Tuning for a Motion Simulator

  • In the virtual environment, reality can be enhanced by offering the motion based on a motion simulator in harmony with visual and auditory modalities. In this research the Stewart-Gough-platform-based motion simulator has been developed. Implementation of vehicle dynamics is necessary in the motion simulator for realistic sense of motion, so bicycle dynamics is adopted in this research. In order to compensate for the limited range of the motion simulator compared with the real vehicle motion, washout algorithm composed of high-pass filter, low-pass filter and tilt coordination is usually employed. Generally, the washout algorithm is used with fixed parameters. In this research a new approach is proposed to tune the filter parameters based on fuzzy logic in real-time. The cutoff frequencies of the filters are adjusted according to the workspace margins and driving conditions. It is shown that the washout filter with the fuzzy-based parameters presents better performance than that with the fixed ones.

  • By conducting multiple regression analysis, we analyzed the major independent factors affecting user convenience and emotional factors, and identified the important functional elements in the design of the VR device, so that the functional elements to be developed can be grasped in advance. As a result of the study, satisfaction of handling of VR bicycle and satisfaction of speed control by paddling were considered as the most important technical factors as independent factors which have the greatest influence on user convenience and emotional factor among technical satisfaction. Also, it is possible to increase the probabilities of successful design by setting a model that predicts user convenience and the emotional part from the technical factors.

Analysis of Display Fatigue induced by HMD-based Virtual Reality Bicycle (HMD 기반 가상현실 자전거의 영상피로 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the display fatigue quantitatively when operating 2D and HMD-based 3D VR bicycles. Though it is generally accepted that the display fatigue induced by 3D VR is greater than that induced by 2D VR, there have been few studies which attempted to measure the display fatigue scientifically. The subjective degree of cybersickness and quantitative flicker fusion frequency (FFF) were measured in twenty subjects (Male 10, Female 10) before and after they operated 2D and 3D VR bicycles for 5 min. Two dependent variables affected by the 2D and 3D VR displays were analyzed and compared statistically based on scientific evidence and research. This study showed that 3D VR resulted in a significantly higher cybersickness rate and a significant lower FFF rate than 2D VR. Given the current propensity to couple VR techniques with exercise equipment, it seems appropriate to verify the general beliefs through scientific methods and experimental measures such as the FFF and cybersickness questionnaires.
