Red sea bream iridovirus (RSIV), belonging to the genus Megalocytivirus, is the predominant cause of mortality in marine fishes in Korea, including rock bream (Oplegnathus fasciatus). Rockfish (Sebastes schlegelii) are the host fish for RSIV, exhibiting no clinical signs or mortality. Cohabitation challenges, which mimicked natural transmission conditions, were performed to evaluate viral transmission between rock bream and rockfish, and to determine the pathogenicity and viral loads. In cohabitation challenge, artificially RSIV-infected rock bream were the viral donor, and healthy rockfish were the recipient. The results showed that although the donor rock bream had 95-100 % cumulative mortality (>108 viral genome copies/mg of spleen 7-14 days after viral infection), the recipient rockfish did not die, even when the viral genome copies in the spleen were >105 copies/mg. These results indicated asymptomatic infections. Notably, in a reverse-cohabitation challenge (artificially RSIV-infected rockfish as the viral donor and healthy rock bream as the recipient), RSIV horizontally infected from subclinical rockfish to rock bream (107 viral genome copies/mg of spleen 21 days after cohabitation) with 10-20% cumulative mortality. These results suggest that an asymptomatic, infected rockfish can naturally transmit the RSIV without being sacrificed.
Viral nervous necrosis (VNN) is a serious disease of sevenband grouper Epinephelus septemfasciatus in Korean aquaculture farms. However, we suggest the following preventative methods for hatcheries: 1) disinfecting rearing water, 2) selecting spawners via ELISA and PCR, 3) selecting eggs via PCR, 4) disinfecting fertilized eggs, and 5) proper facilities management. When these methods are implemented, nervous necrosis virus (NNV)-free fish are produced because vertical and horizontal transmission is prevented. However, horizontal transmission of NNV through rearing seawater sourced from the environment during grow-out stages in sea cages can still occur. Live NNV vaccines with a low rearing temperature or Poly(I:C) immunization are very effective at preventing horizontal transmission of NNV in rearing farms. Furthermore, even after VNN is contracted, fish mortality can be reduced by administering Poly(I:C).
Blood borne infectious diseases are usually a public concern. The transmissions of many diseases are via blood borne mode. Several activities are related to this transmission such as injection, blood transfusion and transplantation. Also, the acupuncture practice can be a possible route for blood borne infectious disease transmission. In this specific review, the author briefly reviews acupuncture and blood borne viral infections.
The therapeutic effectiveness of adenine arabinoside(tora-A) and its conjugate of prednisone(BR-8702-AP) was compared in Herpes simplex Virus Type 1 (HSV-1) infected BALB/C mice. The BALB/C mouse was infected with HSV-1(700 PFU/mouse) intranasally. Among mice infected intranasally with virus, a mortality rate of 100% was observed. On the oral administration of non-toxic doses of ara-A or BR-8702-AP(125 mg /kg/day) for 5 consecutive days 2 hours after virus infection, the tora-A was highly effective in reducing mortality to 0% (P<0.001) and BR-8702-AP was also effective in reducing mortality to 15% (P<0.01). In this model infection, the virus was first replicated in the lung and transmitted to the brain. Both arts-A and BR-8702-AP did not inhibit the viral replication in the lung, but they inhibited the viral transmission to the brain. However, the BR-8702-AP was less effective than the aria-A to prevent transmission of virus to brain. Therefore, the reduced mortality due to tora-A or BR-8702-AP therapy was associated with inhibition of viral transmission to brain.
Natural infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 or vaccination induces virus-specific immunity protecting hosts from infection and severe disease. While the infection-preventing immunity gradually declines, the severity-reducing immunity is relatively well preserved. Here, based on the different longevity of these distinct immunities, we develop a mathematical model to estimate courses of endemic transition of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Our analysis demonstrates that high viral transmission unexpectedly reduces the rates of progression to severe COVID-19 during the course of endemic transition despite increased numbers of infection cases. Our study also shows that high viral transmission amongst populations with high vaccination coverages paradoxically accelerates the endemic transition of COVID-19 with reduced numbers of severe cases. These results provide critical insights for driving public health policies in the era of 'living with COVID-19.'

Background: Viral load and shedding duration are highly associated with the transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. However, limited studies have reported on viral load or shedding in children and adolescents infected with sudden acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the natural course of viral load in asymptomatic or mild pediatric cases. Methods: Thirty-one children (<18 years) with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection were hospitalized and enrolled in this study. Viral loads were evaluated in nasopharyngeal swab samples using real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (E, RdRp, N genes). cycle threshold (Ct) values were measured when patients met the clinical criteria to be released from quarantine. Results: The mean age of the patients was 9.8 years, 18 (58%) had mild disease, and 13 (42%) were asymptomatic. Most children were infected by adult family members, most commonly by their mothers. The most common symptoms were fever and sputum (26%), followed by cough and runny nose. Nine patients (29%) had a high or intermediate viral load (Ct value≤30) when they had no clinical symptoms. Viral load showed no difference between symptomatic and asymptomatic patients. Viral rebounds were found in 15 cases (48%), which contributed to prolonged viral detection. The mean duration of viral detection was 25.6 days. Viral loads were significantly lower in patients with viral rebounds than in those with no rebound (E, P=0.003; RdRp, P=0.01; N, P=0.02). Conclusion: Our study showed that many pediatric patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) experienced viral rebound and showed viral detection for more than 3 weeks. Further studies are needed to investigate the relationship between viral rebound and infectiousness in COVID-19.
With the rapid progress in seed production techniques, aquaculture production of economically important species of marine fish has been accelerated in Japan. Howecer, mass mortalities due to viral infections as well as other microbial infections have often occurred during the seed production and grow-out stages. Among these diseases, four viral diseases have been known in cultured Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) since around 1980. In this paper, viral diseases of cultured flounder in Japan are briefly reviewed, with special attention to two viral diseases. viral epidermal hyperplasia and rhabdovirus infection which are relatively important because of their frequent occurrence. Viral epidermal hyperplasia is characterized by fin opacity and associated with high mortality in larval flounder Electron microscopy of affected epidermal cells and transmission experiments with tissue filtrates demonstrated that the disease was caused by a herpesvirus but the agent has not been isolated in fish cell lines. On the other hand, rhabdovires infection occurrs in juvenile and production size fish with hemorrhage in the skeltal muscle and fins, congestion of the gonads, and ascites. A rhabdovirys was isolated in RTG-2 cells from the diseased flounder as a causative agent, which was designated hirame rhabdovirus (HRV) or Rahbdovirus olivaceus. HRV is serologically distinguishable from other known fish rhabdoviruses. Intensive researches on these viral diseases started in 1980th. but properties of the causative agents and infection mechanisms have not been fully investigated. This results in difficulty in controlling these diseases.
H3N8 equine influenza virus (EIV) causes respiratory diseases in the horse population, and it has been demonstrated that EIV can transmit into dogs owing to its availability on receptors of canine respiratory epithelial cells. Recently, we isolated H3N8 EIV from an EIV-vaccinated horse that showed symptoms of respiratory disease, and which has a partially truncated nonstructural gene (NS). However, it is not clear that the NS-truncated EIV has an ability to cross the host species barrier from horses to dogs as well. Here, we experimentally infected the NS-truncated H3N8 EIV into dogs, and monitored their clinical signs and viral load in respiratory organs to determine the virus's transmissibility.
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a major medical challenge affecting around 200 million people worldwide. The main site of HCV replication is the hepatocytes of the liver. HCV is a positive enveloped RNA virus from the flaviviridae family. Six major HCV genotypes are implicated in the human infection. In developed countries the children are infected mainly through vertical transmission during deliveries, while in developing countries it is still due to horizontal transmission from adults. Minimal nonspecific and brief symptoms are initially found in approximately 15% of children. Acute and chronic HCV infection is diagnosed through the recognition of HCV RNA. The main objective for treatment of chronic HCV is to convert detected HCV viremia to below the detection limit. Children with chronic HCV infection are usually asymptomatic and rarely develop severe liver damage. Therefore, the benefits from current therapies, pegylated-Interferon plus ribavirin, must be weighed against their adverse effects. This combined treatment offers a 50-90% chance of clearing HCV infection according to several studies and on different HCV genotype. Recent direct acting antiviral (DAA) drugs which are well established for adults have not yet been approved for children and young adults below 18 years. The most important field for the prevention of HCV infection in children would be the prevention of perinatal and parenteral transmission. There are areas of focus for new lines of research in pediatric HCV-related disease that can be addressed in the near future.
Viral, bacterial and fungal infections can be transmitted via allografts such as bone, skin, cornea and cardiovascular tissues. Allogenic bone grafts have possibility of transmission of hepatitis C, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1), human T-Cell leukaemia virus (HTLV), tuberculosis and other bacterias. The tissue bank should have a policy for obtaining information from the patient's medical report as to whether the donor had risk factors for infectious diseases. Over the past several years, improvements in donor screening criteria, such as excluding potential donor with "high risk" for HIV-1 and hepatitis infection, and donor blood testing result in the reduction of transmission of these diseases. During tissue processing, many allografts are exposed to antibiotics, disinfectants and terminal sterilization such as irradiation, which further reduce or remove the risk of transmitting diseases. Because the effectiveness of some tissue grafts such as, fresh frozen osteochondral grafts, depends on cellular viability, not all can be subjected to sterilization and processing steps and, therefore, the risk of transmission of infectious disease remains. This article is review of the transmission of considering infectious disease in allogenic bone transplantation and the processing steps of reducing the risk. The risk of viral transmission in allografts can be reduced in several standards. The most important are donor-screening tests and the removal of blood and soft tissues by processing steps under the aseptic environment. In conclusion, final sterilizations including the irradiation, can be establish the safety of allografts.
