  • In this paper, We try to design combined source-channel coder that is compatible with video coding standards. This MAP decoder is proposed by adding semantic structure and semantic constraint of video coding standards to the method using redundnacy of the MAP decoders proposed previously. Then, We get the better performance than usual channel coder's.

  • The frame coding inside the screen for a video coder has a big influence on the quality of the whole frame. The standardized video coder uses DCT, however it can give rise to a low image quality due to the blocking effect at low bit rate. This paper proposes a video coding method for an image quality improvement in human visual aspects. With the proposed method, the perceptual weight is coded with SPIHT and VLC by applying it into the frame and the visual noises are eliminated.

  • In this paper, we propose an adaptive bandwidth allocation algorithm for the transmission of VBR video through ATM Networks. In order to evaluate the required bandwidth for the VBR video, the characteristics of the compressed VBR video generated by the two-layered coder are analyzed with variations in the number of GOP(N), quantizer scale(q), and the number of low-frequency DCT coefficients(.betha.). The two-layer coder which is used to separate from the number of DCT coefficients is designed to transmit the VBR video efficiently. The compressed data generated by the two-layer coder are splitted into the high priority and low priority cells. If congestion is occurred in ATM networks, the minimum image quality is maintained by the high priority cells. The required bandwidth for VBR video is estimated with a prediction algorithm using the scene anframe correlations as well as the statistical properties of the VBR video sources. Strong correlation among the adjacent slices in a frame represents by the scene correlation andstrong correlation among the frames is represented by the frame correlation. The performance of the bandwidth allocation scheme proposed is evaluated in terms of the bandwith utilization, cell loss rate, and SNR with variations in q, n, .betha.. Simulation rewsults shown that the proposed scheme is superior to the conventional methods.

  • In this paper, a co-design method for JPEG2000 video compression system using DSP and FPGA is presented. By profiling the complexity of JPEG2000 algorithm, it is noticed that a MQ-coder is the most complex part. Thus, we implement the MQ-coder on FPGA for the parallel processing using VHDL to reduce the complexity. In order to verify the performance of the MQ-coder, JBIG2 standard test vector and images are used. The experimental results show that the proposed MQ-coder enhances the processing time approximately 3 times compared with the previous software MQ-coder.

  • This paper proposes new motion vector re-estimation techniques for transcoding of heterogenous video coders. The first case is for transcoder of coding format. The coding algorithm with B-picture like MPEG standards is transcoded into the different algorithm without B-picture like H.261 standards. The second case is for transcoder of spatial resolution reduction. It generates a downscaled video bitstream at the video source. The third case is the integrated method that previous two cases are needed simultaneously. These three transcoding algorithms are compared and verified though reconstructed image quality in PSNR, motion vector errors between optimal motion vectors of cascaded trans- coder and motion vectors estimated by proposed methods and the amount of operation.

  • In this paper, we propose a new embedded video compression scheme which uses three-dimensional rate-distortion optimization based block coder. After the proposed scheme removes temporal redundancy by applying the motion compensated temporal filtering(MCTF) on input video frames, two dimensional discrete wavelet transform is applied on video frames to remove spatial redundancy. The three-dimensional wavelet coefficients generated in this way are sorted according to their expected rate-distortion slope and encoded by using the three-dimensional block partition coding method. The proposed scheme also uses both the effective color video coding method which maintains embedded features, and the efficient bit-rate control method. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme not only produces embedded bit-streams, but also outperforms existing video compression schemes.

  • New very low bit rate segmentation video image coding technique is proposed by segmenting image into textually homogeneous regions. Regions are classified into one of three perceptually distinct texture classes(perceived constant intensity, smooth texture, and rough texture) using the Human Visual System(HVS) and the fractals. To design very low bit rate video image coder, it is very important to determine the best block size for estimation the fractal dimension and the thresholding of the fractal dimension for each texture class. Good quality reconstructed images are obtained with about 0.10 to 0.21 bit per pixel(bpp) for many different types of imagery.

  • We propose an algorithm for the robust transmission of video in error prone environment based on multiple description (MD) scheme and simple rate-distortion operators. The redundancy rate-distortion (RRD) criteria is used to split a one-layer compressed video stream into two correlated descriptions. The proposed algorithm can find more candidate points on the RRD curve than the conventional RRD based methods. A new distortion measure is also defined in this paper, which considers more realistic error environments. Since the proposed MD video coder is based on the standard H.263 coder, each description can be decoded independently by the standard H.263 decoder. Also, several descriptions can be decoded into a single stream by additional merge stage and the H.263 decoder. Simulation results show that the proposed MD video coder yields better performance than the conventional MD splitting algorithm at all bitrates both in single and two description cases.

  • Binary MQ arithmetic coding is widely used recently as a basic entropy coder in multimedia coding system. MQ coder esteems high in compression efficiency to be used in JBIG2 and JPEG2000. The importance of arithmetic coding is increasing after it is adopted as an unique entropy coder in HEVC standard. In the binary MQ coder, arithmetic approximation without multiplication is used in the process of recursive subdivision of range interval. Because of the MPS/LPS exchange activity happened in MQ coder, output byte tends to increase. This paper proposes an enhanced binary MQ arithmetic coder to make use of a lookup table for AQe using quantization skill in order to reduce the deficiency. Experimental results show that about 4% improvement of compression in case of JBIG2 for bi-level image compression standard. And also, about 1% improvement of compression ratio is obtained in case of lossless JPEG2000 coding. For the lossy JPEG2000 coding, about 1% improvement of PSNR at the same compression ratio. Additionally, computational complexity is not increasing.

  • In order to transmit various types of multimedia data (i.e. voice, video, and data) over a wireless channel, the coding and modulation scheme needs to be flexible and capable of providing a variable quality of service, data rates, and latency. In this paper, we study a mobile multimedia COMA network combined with the concatenated Reed-Solomon/Rate Compatible Punctured Convolution code (RS/RCPC). Also, this paper propose the combination of concatenated RS/RCPC coder and COMA RAKE receiver for multimedia COMA traffic which can be sent over wireless channels. From the results, using a frequency selective Rayleigh fading channel model, it is shown that concatenated RS/RCPC coder at the wireless physical layer can be effective in providing reliable wireless multimedia CDMA network. And the proposed scheme that combine concatenated RS/RCPC coder and CDMA RAKE receiver provides a significant gain in the BER performance over multi-user interference and multipath frequency selective fading channels.
