This paper is about a case on the arbitration of disputes between the parties of charter party. 'B' vessel owner on the original charter party first made a charter party with 'L' cargo owner on the original charter party. Then, 'B' entered into another charter party with 'D' vessel owner, who will actually take charge of carriage of the cargoes which is described on the original charter party. Therefore, 'B' is a carrier of cargoes of 'L' and 'D' is a carrier of cargoes of 'B', according to the contracts. The cargoes of 'B' is cargoes of 'L', by nature. In these circumstances, damages to the cargoes occurred in the transit by the vessel of 'D'. Who should take the responsibility for the damage of cargoes? Who must be liable for those, 'B' or 'D'?. According to the original charter party, 'L' signed 'as Charterers' and 'B' was the counterpart of 'L'. But 'B' signed as 'for and on behalf of 'B',' without 'as Owners'. Tribunal of arbitration award that 'B' should take the responsibility for the damage to the cargoes, because 'B' is the vessel owner. Although 'B' is a contract carrier, 'B' must bear the liability of transport of the cargoes. The counterpart of charterer, 'L' is 'B' who is presumed to be the vessel owner by the original charter party. 'D', actual carrier is not the privy of 'L', cargo owner. This case teach us that signature on the contract is the matter of great importance.

Recently, the synthetic material stern tube bush has been applied by ship owner's requirement because the synthetic material has a merit. That is to say, when stern tube seal is damaged and sea water comes into stern tube, it can work without problem because of water lubricating property. However, the material also has a demerit of temperature rise problem when some factors meets on synthetic material, for example, not sufficient lubrication oil supply and not proper shaft alignment and so on. As known in the world, the RAILKO bush is rampant for synthetic material by some ship owner because of the above mentioned reason. However, the bush has several accidents on large container vessel. Unfortunately or fortunately our yard has a chance to apply the RAILKO bush owing to requirement of specific ship owner. Therefore, it is much more required to approach the accurate shaft alignment analysis. In line with this reason, we had a shaft alignment calculation considering hull deformation and hull flexibility (hull stiffness). Also, in the calculation, we had considered dynamic condition which is reflected he propeller thrust forces and moments and oil film stiffness on the shaft alignment calculation. According to he shaft alignment calculation, bearing slope was applied on the tern tube bush and was measured. The RAILKO bush should be applied the running in procedure according to maker's recommendation for performing the oil film on the bush surface. Finally, the vessels were delivered successfully without any problem with AILKO bush as shown on his paper.
Every time charter must have a final terminal date, that is a date by which the charterer is contractually obliged to redeliver the vessel. Where the law implies a margin or tolerance beyond an expiry date stipulated in the charter party, the final terminal date comes at the end of such implied extension. When the parties have agreed in the charter party on the margin or tolerance to be allowed, the final terminal date comes at the end of such agreed period. But the nature of a time charter is that the charter is for a finite period of time and when the final terminal date arrives the charterer is contractually bound to redeliver the vessel to the owner References to delivery and redelivery are strictly inaccurate since the vessel never leaves the possession of the shipowner, but the expression are conventionally used to describe the time when the period of the charter begins and ends. The legitimacy or otherwise of what is to be regarded as a vessel's final voyage must be judged at the time when the charterers give an order for the vessel to carry out the voyage in question, and then by reference to what they order her to do. The purpose of this paper aims to analyse cases on the final voyage of time charter, and specially to explore implications of the final voyage in time charter through the Gregos case.
A navigator on bridge needs to know every kinds of motion characteristics of his vessel at sea. Generally when a vessel is completely built, the shipyard makes turning circle diagrams from the results of turing circle tests made during the sea trials for the reference of the vessel's owner. But referring only the data of a turning circle diagram, an officer on bridge can not figure out his vessel's maneuvering characteristics sufficiently, So nowadays the shipyard often adds Z test to turning circle test for more detail references. In this paper the author made Z and turning circle tests at the rudder angles of 15 and and 35 degress separately and in each of the case made a turrning circle diagram from the results of the turning circle test and the esults numerically calculated from mathematical formula made on the base of the maneuvering indices got from the Z test and compared them each other for the purpose of finding the correlations between them. Followings are concluded from the results. An actual turning circle diagram and a calculated one from the results of the Z test at same rudder angle coincides each other well when the center of the calculated circle is transferred by 1.7B toward the direction of the initial turning perpendicularly to the original course and 0.5L toward the direction in parallel with original course in case of the rudder angle of 35 degrees and 1.2B and 0.3L toward each of the above mentioned directions in case of rudder angle of 15 degrees.
Regarding the ocean carrier's responsibility for damage indemnification, both his or her duty of care and reason of legal exemption have been considered important. The International Convention for the Unification of Certain Rules relating to Bills of Lading also provides that the ocean carrier indemnifies for the loss or damage of freight on the basis of the principle of liability with fault. In other words, the carrier assumes responsibility only for the loss or damage of freight which is under his or her control and whose safety must be carefully maintained by him or her. The carrier's duty of care which is required for freight safety in accordance with the convention is associated with two themes, seaworthiness of vessel and freight itself. To make ocean freight shipping effective necessities the seaworthiness of the ship that will conduct the shipping service under its responsibility. This will ultimately lead to making the service impressive to the shipper as freight owner. Thus the purpose of this study is to contribute to more reasonable shipping by the shipowner or the carrier who needs to ensure seaworthiness of vessel, and prevent unseaworthiness that may be incurred in accordance with freight characteristics. For the purpose, this paper reviewed the meaning of seaworthiness of vessel through a juridical approach to its causal relationship with ocean freight shipping.

The world's largest twin skeg VLBC developed at Samsung shipyard for BHP, Austrailian owner, has been proven as a successful vessel through 1 year's operation record in view of the superior propulsion performances, maneouverability in extremely shallow water and all ship's systems, especially, ship's vibration. The principal technical matter during the design development from the initial design stage to the sea trial has been summarized on this report.
Since it is very important for an ocean-going vessel to transmit information quickly and accurately to her owner or charterer not only for the ship's safety but for economic operation of the ship, some newly-built automated vessels equipped with automatic information transmission system which consists of INMARSAT-C and specially-designed computer. This system, however, is not applicable to the existing vessel without chaging her equipments and, furthermore, is too expensive for small shipping companies to fit out such a system on their vessels. Therefore, we propose a low-priced information transmission system which consists of a personal computer and communication equipments in the existing vessel, and in this paper, as the groundwork of the proposed system, we have made up the ship's position transmission system which is composed of and IBM AT-compatible, PC, INMARSAT-A and a GPS receiver. As the test result of the system through sea trial on the training ship 'HANBADA', we confirmed that transmission of the ship's position was achieved succesfully and consequently there could be high possibility of cost-effectiveness of the proposed system.

Recent growth in global economic situation has led dramatic increase in new buildings of large containerships. These increased new building orders have brought keen concerns of developing and improving the quality of design and increasing the productivity of the vessel in order to satisfy the ship Owner's various requirements. For the increment of productivity and quality of containership, the plastic type bearing pad of cargo hatch cover has been investigated intensively for years with the supplier of cargo hatch cover. The result of investigation showed that there are numbers of advantages for the Owner and Builder over the existing bronze bearing pads which are better corrosion resistance long life time, low friction coefficient, easy maintenance, easy installation, better production lead time and low maintenance cost.

For the preliminary stages of ship design it is necessary to develop a basic design, which specifies the main particulars of the vessel. based on the requirements given by the owner. An efficient design enables the shipyard to make a rough estimate of the construction costs and to put forward a favourable quote during the call for tenders. The parametric determination of the main particulars of the vessel involves the application of empirical formulae. These formulae have been created after detailed tests and research by maritime research institutions and researchers had been carried out. Here, the design of a medium sized Bulk Carrier (26000t dwt) with a service speed of 17 knots for carrying rice and rock phosphate has been illustrated. Medium sized Bulk Carriers (25,000t dwt - 50,000t dwt) are in steady demand among small shipping companies. They have a size advantage, in that port size restrictions do not affect their design tremendously. Nevertheless, structurally. they are one of the most difficult to build. During design, the rules of the maritime regulatory bodies were strictly adhered to.

Vessel's ice speed performances will be verified in ice sea trial but environmental conditions of ice fields are changeable according to the weather condition of ice trial area. Speed performance has to correct in the no wind, wave and current etc. after sea trial. Especially finding ice fields which is exact the same as owner's ice thickness and strength requirements is not easy. Therefore speed correction according to environment condition has to be done after sea trial measurements. Correction methods for ice thickness, ice strength, wave, wind and ship draft, trim, ice drift etc. are checked in ice sea trial based on literature review such as ISO standard, ITTC recommendation, journal papers and proceedings of conferences. Possibility of application for current and ice drift correction in ice field are discussed and measuring schemes and procedures of correction methods are described in this paper. All of correction schemes are calculated for 'Araon' which is ice breaking research vessel with Arctic and Antarctic ice field test results. Analyzed results shows that Araon is satisfied with her official ice speed performance of 3 knots with 10MW power at 1m ice thickness, 570kPa ice flexural strength.
