Hydrodynamic behavior and response of vertical-cylindrical liquid-storage tank is considered. The equation of the liquid motion is shown by Laplace's differential equation with the fluid velocity potential. The solution of the Laplace's differential equation of the liquid motion is expressed with the modified Bessel functions. Only rigid tank is studied. The effective masses and heights for the tank contents are presented for engineering design model.
The various wind turbines have been designed and developed for the century. The precision design of the blade and turbine system considering the wind circumstance is required for the high efficiency. In this paper, we investigated the output characteristics of the horizontal and vertical wind turbine related to the wind velocity. Furthermore we will intend to design the wind turbine blade adapted the urban wind circumstance.
This study investigates the effects of sediment on the flow characteristics such as velocity distribution, friction velocity, turbulent intensities, Reynolds stress, etc. Particle tracking velocimetry (PTY) is used to measure the vertical flow field. Results show that flow over the high bed-load concentration region has larger values of mean velocity and friction velocity and smaller values of turbulence intensities, compared to those for flow over the low bed-load concentration region.
In spite of considerable progress in the recent decades, there still remain large uncertainties in numerical cloud models. In this study, effects of uncertainty in terminal velocity of graupel on cloud simulation are investigated. For this, a two-dimensional bin microphysics cloud model is employed, and deep convective clouds are simulated under idealized environmental conditions. In the sensitivity experiments, the terminal velocity of graupel is changed to twice and half the velocity in the control experiment. In the experiment with fast graupel terminal velocity, a large amount of graupel mass is present in the lower layer. On the other hand, in the experiment with slow graupel terminal velocity, almost all graupel mass remains in the upper layer. The graupel size distribution exhibits that as graupel terminal velocity increases, in the lower layer, the number of graupel particles increases and the peak radius in the graupel mass size distribution decreases. In the experiment with fast graupel terminal velocity, the vertical velocity is decreased mainly due to a decrease in riming that leads to a decrease in latent heat release and an increase in evaporative cooling via evaporation, sublimation, and melting that leads to more stable atmosphere. This decrease in vertical velocity causes graupel particles to fall toward the ground easier. By the changes in graupel terminal velocity, the accumulated surface precipitation amount differs up to about two times. This study reveals that the terminal velocity of graupel should be estimated more accurately than it is now.
In Geum River of Korea, three multi-purpose weirs were built at the downstream of Daecheong Reservoir during the Four Major River Restoration Project (FMRRP). The weirs have altered the hydraulic characteristics of the river, and consequently transformed the large areas of flowing ecosystem to deep and wide stagnant environment. In every summer, a thermal stratification occurred near the Baekje Weir having mean depth of 4.0 m, and the surface algal blooms dominated by buoyant cyanobacteria have been frequently formed after the FMRRP. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between flow velocity and thermal stability of the waterbody using a three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamic model (EFDC+) after calibration against the thermistor chain data obtained in 2014. A new Sigma-Zed vertical grid system of EFDC+ that minimize the pressure gradient errors was used to better simulate the thermodynamics of the waterbody. The model reasonably simulated the vertical profiles of the observed water temperatures. The vertical mean flow velocity and the Richardson Number (Ri) that represents the stability of waterbody were estimated for various management water levels and flow rates scenarios. The results indicated that the thermal stability of the waterbody is mostly high ($Ri{\gg}0.25$) enough to establish stratification, and largely depend on the flow velocity. The critical flow velocity that can avoid a persistent thermal stratification was found to be approximately 0.1 m/s.
The vertical slope of railway track is the differences of attitude for the horizontal distances between two positions of railway. It is better to be small vertical slope for the comfortable of passengers and the operation of railway system. However, the variable vertical slope is required that the simple vertical slope causes the huge quantities of embankment and cutting, the continuous welded rail tunnels, the continuous welded rail bridges, etc,. This research is for the relation between the vertical slopes and the trainset performances. This research shows that the effective vertical slopes for the operation of railway. The velocity of car and operation time and the consumed energy was considered for each vertical slope and type of car power system. The result of suitable vertical slope from this research is to be used for the design of railway plan.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to measure the morphological characteristics of the foot and biomechanical variables of the lower extremity joints during vertical jump and investigate the relationship between foot morphology and biomechanics of vertical jump. Method: 24 men in their 20s (age: 22.42 ± 1.41 yrs, height: 173.37 ± 4.61 cm, weight: 72.02 ± 6.21 kg, foot length: 251.70 ± 8.68 mm) participated in the study. Morphological characteristics of the foot included the length of the first toe, the length of the second toe, and the horizontal length from the center of ankle joint to the achilles tendon (Plantar Flexion Moment Arm [PFMA]). Biomechanical variables were measured for plantar flexor strength of the ankle joint and peak angular velocity, moment, and power of the lower extremity joint during vertical jump. Results: There was a significant correlation between the length of the first toe and plantar flexion strength at 30°/s [r=.440, p=.016], the angular velocity of the metatarsophalangeal [MTP] joint [r=-.369, p=.038] while significant correlations between PFMA and the angular velocities of the knee joint [r=.369, p=.038] and ankle joint [r=.420, p=.021] were found. There were also significant correlations between the length of the first toe and the maximum moment of the hip joint [r=.379, p=.034], and the length of the second toe and the power of the hip joint [r=-.391, p=.029]. Finally, significant correlations between PFMA and the power of the ankle joint [r=.424, p=.019] and MTP joint [r=.367, p=.039] were found. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, the length of the toe and PFMA would be related to the function of the lower extremity joint. Therefore, this should be considered when designing the functional structure of a shoe. Furthermore, this relationship can be applied to intensive training for the plantar flexors and toe flexors to improve power in athletic performance.
A study, using potential water wave theory, is conducted on the oblique water wave motion over two fixed submerged rectangular blocks (breakwaters) placed over a finite step bottom. We have considered infinite and semi-infinite fluid domains. In both domains, the Fourier expansion method is employed to obtain the velocity potentials explicitly in terms of the infinite Fourier series. The unknown coefficients appearing in the velocity potentials are determined by the eigenfunction expansion matching method at the interfaces. The derived velocity potentials are used to compute the hydrodynamic horizontal and vertical forces acting on the submerged blocks for different values of block thickness, gap spacing between the two blocks, and submergence depth of the upper block from the mean free surface. In addition, the wave load on the vertical wall is computed in the case of the semi-infinite fluid domain for different values of blocks width and the incident wave angle. It is observed that the amplitudes of hydrodynamic forces are negligible for larger values of the wavenumber. Furthermore, the upper block experiences a higher hydrodynamic force than the lower block, regardless of the gap spacing, submergence depth, and block thickness.
A PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) was applied to measure in-cylinder velocity field according to inlet valve angle during intake stroke. Two engines, one is conventional DOHC 4 valve and the other is narrow valve angle, were used to compare real intake flow. The results show that the intake flow pattern of conventional engine is more complicated than that of narrow angle one in horizontal plane and the vertical component of in-cylinder flow is rapidly decayed at the end stage of intake. On the other hand, the flow pattern of narrow angle one is relatively well arranged in horizontal plane and the vertical velocity component remains so strongly that forms large-scale strong tumble. Two engines also form commonly three tumble; two are small and bellow the intake valve and one is large-scale. The center of large scale tumble moves to bottom of cylinder as the vertical velocity increases.
A free-surface correction(FSC) method is presented to solve the 3-D shallow water equations. Using the mode splitting process, FSC method can simulate shallow water flows under the hydrostatic assumption. For the hydrostatic pressure calculation, the momentum equations are firstly discretized using a semi-implicit scheme over the vertical direction leading to the tri-diagonal matrix systems. A semi-implicit scheme has been adopted to reduce the numerical instability caused by relatively small vertical length scale compare to horizontal one. and, as the free surface correction step the final horizontal velocity fields are corrected after the final surface elevations are obtained. Finally, the vertical final velocity fields can be calculated from the continuity equation. The numerical model is applied to the calculation of the simulation of flow fields in a rectangular open channel with the tidal influence. The comparisons with the analytical solutions show overall good agreements between the numerical results and analytical solutions.
