  • The suspension thyristor valve can generate tremendous vertical acceleration responses in layers and large tension forces in hangers. A shaking table test of a scaled-down model of thyristor valves suspended on a hall building is performed to qualify the risk of vertical uplift of two representative types of valves, the chain valve and the rigid valve. Besides, an analytical model is established to investigate the source of the slackening of hangers. The test results show that the valves frequently experience a large vertical acceleration response. The soft spring joint can significantly reduce acceleration, but is still unable to prevent vertical uplift of the chain valve. The analytical model shows a stiffer roof and inter-story connection both contribute to a higher risk of vertical uplift for a rigid valve. In addition, the planar eccentricity and short hangers, which result in torsional motion of the valve, increase the possibility of vertical uplift for a chain valve. Therefore, spring joints with additional viscous dampers and symmetric layout in each layer are recommended for the rigid and chain valve, respectively, to prevent the uplift of valves.

  • The vibration on building structures due to exciting vibration forces has been studied only for the vibration level on existing buildings. Recently, several researches have been performed on the prediction of vertical vibration on structures by using an analytical method. However, these studies have been focused on mainly the vibration analysis through analytical modeling of structures. This study aims to investigate the characteristics of vertical vibration transfer in terms of the directions of transfer(upward transfer and downward transfer) on the shear wall building structures due to 2 type vibration forces. In order to examine the characteristics of vertical vibration transfer, the mode analysis and the impact experiment were conducted several times on one building structure. The results of this study suggest that the characteristics of vertical vibration transfer are different in terms of the directions of transfer.

  • Unwanted vibrations are inevitably induced in other directions when pure unidirectional vibration motion is desired for the vertical scratching mechanism. Pure vertical vibration motion of the scratching machine can be obtained by driving identical two motors with symmetrically positioned eccentric unbalance masses. The desired optimal condition for driving pure vertical vibration for the scratching machine is assumed to be the resonance condition in that direction. Imposing the flexibility of the scratching machine in the horizontal direction, we can find out the amount of horizontal vibration component while maintaining the resonance in vertical direction. The desired stiffness in horizontal direction which produces the minimum vibration in horizontal direction are defined which can be used as a guide line to design the supporting structure of the scratching machine.

  • The effect of vertical vibration of a beam is significantly influenced by higher modes of vibration. Therefore, a beam can be modeled using several elements must De used to represent a vibrating beam. As a result, analysis of a space framed structure for vertical vibration requires increase number of elements leading to more complicated model with many degree of freedom which requires large amount of computing resources for dynamic analysis. An efficient analysis method for vertical vibration of space framed structures are proposed in this paper which is presented in three method. The first method is to determine minimum nodes that shall be used to obtain dynamic response with the vertical vibration. Secondly, matrix condensation methods are introduced to reduce the computation efforts used to perform dynamic analysis and the selection of primary degree-of-freedom is proposed. The third method is of using the mass participation factor for the selection of primary degree-of-freedom.

  • Severe tooth wear may cause the pathologic change of the TMJ and masticatory muscles, unesthetic facial appearance, pathogenic pulp and occlusal disharmony. Treating patients with severely worn dentition often requires full mouth rehabilitation with increasing vertical dimension. Proper diagnosis and treatment planning are important for esthetic and functional definitive restorations and the long term stability of the neuromuscular system and the TMJ. In this case, 66 year-old female presented with generalized worn dentition. Based on assessment, pathologic destruction of teeth structure on entire dentition was caused by masticatory force and diet habit without loss of vertical dimension. Subsequently, 3 mm increase of vertical dimension that based on incisor for tooth restoration and esthetic improvement was determined. After 8 weeks stabilization period with temporary fixed prostheses, definitive prostheses were fabricated. After 6 months follow up period, satisfactory outcomes were attained both functional and esthetic aspects through this procedure.

  • The characteristics and effectiveness of double tuned mass dampers (DTMD) have been studied by many researchers. DTMD usually consists of one larger mass block and one smaller mass block. In this study, DTMD was proposed to reduce the vibration of vertical pumps in industrial plants. In order to assess the efficiency of the proposed method, numerical analysis for the simplified vertical pump model with single and double TMDs was carried out. It was also investigated that the effects of optimal TMD parameters such as frequency ratio and damping ratio on dynamic responses of the main structure. According to analysis results, DTMD are more effective to control the vibration of the vertical pump and show good robustness to the change in the stiffness of TMD.

  • This paper presents the see-saw type RF MEMS switch based on a single crystalline silicon structure with narrow gap vertical comb. Low actuation voltage and high isolation are key features to be solved in electrostatic RF MEMS switch design. Since these parameters in conventional parallel plate RF MEMS switch designs are in trade-off relationship, both requirements cannot be met simultaneously. In the vertical comb design, however, the actuation voltage is independent of the vertical separation distance between the contact electrodes. Therefore, the large separation gap between contact electrodes is implemented to achieve high isolation. We have designed and fabricated RF MEMS switch which has 46dB isolation at 5GHz, 0.9dB insertion loss at 5GHz and 40V actuation voltage.

  • The impact of vertical grid-nesting on the tropical cyclone intensity and track forecast was investigated using the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) version 3.8 and the initialization method of the Structure Adjustable Balanced Bogus Vortex (SABV). For a better resolution in the central part of the numerical domain, where the tropical cyclone of interest is located, a horizontal and vertical nesting technique was employed. Simulations of the tropical cyclone Sanba (16th in 2012) indicated that the vertical nesting had a weak impact on the cyclone intensity and little impact on the track forecast. Further experiments revealed that the performance of forecast was quite sensitive to the horizontal resolution, which is in agreement with previous studies. The improvement is due to the fact that horizontal resolution can improve forecasts not only on the tropical cyclone-scale but also for large-scale disturbances.

  • This study is aimed at typifying the crossing structure and inquiring into the characteristics of vegetation distribution by type targeting Dorimcheon(stream), Banghakcheon(stream), Seongnaecheon(stream) and some sections of Yangjaecheon(stream) in Seoul through the establishment of basic data for restoring vegetation in urban stream. This research classified the crossing structure into 56 slope types and 31 vertical types in combination with the three items, such as bank slope(vertical style, slope style) of bank, absence or presence of waterside, and revetment structure. This research derived nine slope types including SB1 (revetment of low water level-revetment with vegetation, and revetment of high water level-nature riverside) including SG5(revetment of low water-concrete, and revetment of high water level-riprap work), and three vertical types, such as VH4(bank revetment-wet masonry), and VH7(bank revetment - concrete )from the target survey areas. Among these, both revetment of low water level and high water level were found to be distributed on the longest section as the type of SG7 and VG7 structured in concrete. As a result of inquiry and analysis of micro topography structure and vegetation structure of eight major types, this research could find out the influence of crossing structure on plant vegetation according to the characteristic by typified item, but there appeared no distinct characteristic of vegetation distribution by crossing structure.

  • In cable tunnel construction using TBM, the vertical shaft is an essential structure for entrance and exit of TBM equipment and power lines. Since a shaft penetrates the ground vertically, it often encounters rock mass. Blasting or rock splitting methods, which are mainly used to the rock excavation, cause public complaints due to the noise, vibration and road occupation. Therefore, mechanical excavation using vertical shaft excavation machine are considered as an alternative to the conventional methods. However, at the current level of technology, the vertical excavation machine has limitation in its performance when applied for high strength rock with a compressive strength of more than 120 MPa. In this study, the potential utilization of waterjet technology as an excavation assistance method was investigated to improve mechanical excavation performance in the hard rock formations. Rock cutting experiments were conducted to verify the cutting performance of the abrasive waterjet. Based on the experimental result, it was found that ensuring excavation performance with respect to changing in ground conditions can be achieved by adjusting waterjet parameters such as standoff distance, traverse speed and water pressure. In addition, based on the relationship between excavation performance, uniaxial compressive strength and RQD, it was suggested that excavation performance could be improved by artificially creating joints using the abrasive waterjet. It is expected that these research results can be utilized as fundamental data for the introduction of vertical shaft excavation machines in the future.
