The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of landing tasks on the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury risk factors in female basketball players. Fifteen female basketball players performed a drop landing and a drop landing with a vertical jump on the 40 cm height box. Three-dimensional motion analysis system and ground reaction force system was used for calculate the ACL injury risk factors. Paired samples t-test with Bonfferoni correction were performed. The drop landing with a vertical jump had the higher knee flexion angle, peak knee varus moment, trunk flexion angle than a drop landing. However, the drop landing had the higher trunk rotation angle than a drop landing with a vertical jump. These results indicate that seemingly minor variations between drop landing and drop landing with a vertical jump may influence the ACL injury risk factors. Caution should be used when comparing studies using different landing tasks.
With comparison of maximum vertical reaction force and lower limb on drop landing between normal and flat foot group, this study is to provide fundamental data of the prevention of injury and the treatment of exercise which are frequently occurred on flat foot group's drop landing. The surface electrodes were sticked on lateral gastrocnemius muscle, medial gastrocnemius muscle, tibialis anterior and the drop landing on a force plate of 40cm was performed with a normal group who had no musculoskeletal disease and a flat foot group of 9 people who had feet examinations. Vertical reaction force were significantly statistically different between two groups(p<.001). Muscle activity of lower limbs in all three parts were not statistically different but showed high tendency on average in the flat foot group. The flat foot group had difficulties in diversification of impact burden and high muscle activity. Therefore, it was suggested that muscular strengthening of knee joints and plantar flexions of foot joints which were highly affected in impact absorption will be required.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of functional ankle instability (FAI) and surgical treatment (ST) on postural stability and leg stiffness during vertical-drop landing. Method: A total of 21 men participated in this study (normal [NOR]: 7, FAI: 7, ST: 7). We estimated dimensionless leg stiffness as the ratio of the peak vertical ground reaction force and the change in stance-phase leg length. Leg length was calculated as the distance from the center of the pelvis to the center of pressure under the foot. Furthermore, the analyzed variables included the loading rate and the dynamic postural stability index (DPSI; medial-lateral [ML], anterior-posterior [AP], and vertical [V]) in the initial contact phase. Results: The dimensionless leg stiffness in the FAI group was higher than that of the NOR group and the ST group (p = .018). This result may be due to a smaller change in stance-phase leg length (p = .001). DPSI (ML, AP, and V) and loading rate did not show differences according to the types of ankle instability during drop landing (p > .05). Conclusion: This study suggested that the dimensionless leg stiffness was within the normal range in the ST group, whereas it was increased by the stiffness of the legs rather than the peak vertical force during vertical-drop landing in the FAI group. Identifying these potential differences may enable clinicians to assess ankle instability and design rehabilitation protocols specific for the impairment.
Pressure drop were experimentally investigated for ice slurry flowing in the acrylic pipes with inner diameter of 24 mm. Ice slurry was made from 6.5% ethylene glycol-water solution, and the pipes is consisted of horizontal, vertical (upward and downward) and $90^{\circ}$ elbow pipe. The ice Packing factor (IPF) and the flow rate of the experiments were varied from 0 to 30% and from 5 to 70kg/min respectively The measured pressure drop in various pipe positions were compared with those for the solution flow (IPF=0). The pressure drop was larder than that for solution flows as the IPF increased when the flow rate was low or very high. Sharp increases in pressure drop were observed for the cases when IPF is more than 70% in horizontal and vertical pipes, whereas the pressure drop increased with the IPF simultaneously in an elbow pipe.
The performance of two vertical-blade eliminators (V1, V2) and two horizontal-blade ones (H1, H2) for absorption chillers were tested in terms of pressure drop and refrigerant entrainment. The test was carried out using a wind tunnel with a cross section of 300 mm$\times$300 mm. The pressure drop of four eliminators tested was found to be in the rage of 1.0~2.7mm $H_2O$ at the face velocity of 2m/s. In the refrigerant entrainment test the vertical-blade eliminators showed much better performance than the horizontal-blade ones. The horizontal-blade eliminators showed satisfactory results at the air velocity of 2m/s but exceeded the limit value at 3 m/s. Since the cooling capacity of a machine is lowered by about 2.5% at the pressure drop of 1 m $H_2O$, more researches are required to reduce the pressure drop in the eliminator.
Objective: Ligament laxity and hypotonia are characteristics of Down syndrome patients. The aim of this study was to compare the landing pattern between Down syndrome patients and typically developing subjects. To compare the landing pattern, variables related to ligament laxity and hypotonia i.e. vertical stiffness and lower extremities kinematics were investigated. Method: Five subjects with Down syndrome (age: $14.6{\pm}1.8years$, mass: $47.6{\pm}6.94kg$, height: $147.9{\pm}6.0cm$) and six able-bodied subjects (age: $13.2{\pm}0.4years$, mass: $54.7{\pm}6.7kg$, height: $160.1{\pm}9.8cm$) participated in this study. Results: The vertical displacement of the center of mass, vertical reaction force, leg stiffness and range of ankle angle range among Down syndrome patients were significantly different than typically developing group. The youth with Down's syndrome appeared to receive greater vertical impact force at landing than normal youth. Conclusion: The differences in the biomechanical characteristics suggest the delay in motor development among Down syndrome patients and an increased risk of injury to the lower extremity during movement execution such as drop landing.
Recently, several researches have been performed on the prediction of vertical vibration on structures by using an analytical method. However, these studies have been focused on mainly the vibration analysis through analytical modeling of structures. This study aims to investigate the characteristics of vertical vibration transfer in terms of the directions of transfer(upward transfer and downward transfer) on the shear wall building structures due to heel-drop impact forces. In order to examine the characteristics of vertical vibration transfer, the mode analysis and the impact experiment were conducted several times on two shear wall building structures. The results of this study suggest that the characteristics of vertical vibration transfer are similar in terms of the directions of transfer.
This experimental study was conducted to figure out the drag reduction and convective heat transfer in vertical downward two-phase flow with polymer additives. The drag reduction effect were analyzed by using the difference of the pressure drop between the flow with polymer additives and without it. Experimental results show that the pressure drop with polymer additives is less than the pressure drop without polymer in vertical downward two-phase flow. And the convective heat transfer has decreased with increasing the polymer concentration in vertical downward two-phase flow.
For industrial package (IP)-type transport containers for radioactive materials, a free drop test should be conducted under regulatory conditions. Owing to various uncertainties observed during the drop test, errors in drop angles inevitably occur. In IP-type metal transport containers in which the container directly impacts onto a rigid target without any shock absorbing materials, the error in the drop angle due to a slight misalignment makes a significant difference from the ideal drop. In particular, in a vertical drop, the error in the drop angle causes a strong secondary impact. In this paper, a numerical method is proposed to estimate the error in the drop angle occurring during the test. To determine this error, an optimization method accompanying a computational drop analysis is proposed, and a surrogate model is introduced to ensure calculation efficiency. Effectiveness of the proposed method is validated by performing the verification and comparison between the test and the analysis applied with the drop angle error.
The purpose of this paper is to obtain the basic data for design of pressure cooling system. Static pressure drop, as a function of superficial velocity, was measured for different stacking methods and stacking heights of some fruits and vegetables. At given superficial velocity, sphericity and void fraction had a much greater influence on static pressure drop than average diameter of spherical fruits such as apple, peach, tomato and kiwi fruit. Among cylindrical vegetables such as cucumber, carrot, radish and chinese cabbage, cucumber showed different pattern of static pressure drop because of its bended shape, radish showed less static pressure drop than other vegetables because its large sizes of voids. When cucumber and spinach were stacked vertically and horizontally to air flow, a much greater static pressure drop was shown in vertical than in horizontal type, therefore static pressure drop was affected not only by void fraction but also by void shape. Also, in packed-beds of fruits and vegetables, static pressure drop could be estimated very well by Ramsins equation.
